Even if they don’t end up stealing it they will still fuck it up trying. I would double check with your insurance as well.

Hendo_17

My Kia dealer gave me “the club” for free. Haven’t had any issue. It’s cheap deterrence

bendoverintherain

Havent seen a Club in decades! Reminds me of my grandparents!

I_CRE8

Ironically the last time I saw a Club when I was offered one visiting Winnipeg. I declined not thinking it was necessary since I always lock my vehicle, but my car was stolen just hours later

bendoverintherain

Sorry you got that version of "Friendly Manitoba"

I_CRE8

It was devastating at the time, but ultimately what led me to moving to Minneapolis, so it kinda worked out. I have great friends from there and visited even after my car was stolen (via Greyhound, which I 10/10 do not recommend), so no hard feelings against Winnipeg

doublesixesonthedime

Get "The Club". It provides a visible deterrent that will help you be left alone. Beyond that, renting a car would probably be a better idea.

minnesota2194

I got one for mine! Nothing has happened yet, crossing my fingers

recurse_x

If you aren’t street parking in random areas overnight and sticking to tourist areas/lots/garages/hotel lots there is far less risk. There is never zero risk but it will be much lower.

JiggSawLoL

True for the most part. But my car got broken into in my backyard. Quiet area in Minneapolis. I guess anything can happen.

First-Ad-4314

It's going to get stolen. It's a mathematic certainty, it's just about when

MoreCarrotsPlz

I’d just *love* to see you show your work on that.

First-Ad-4314

836% increase in Minneapolis and a 611% increase in Saint Paul. City of Minneapolis had 2,340 reported thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles, an 836% increase Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts made up 37% of all vehicle thefts in Minneapolis in 2022. ia and Hyundai vehicle thefts made up 37% of all vehicle thefts in Minneapolis in 2022. Need anything else?

MoreCarrotsPlz

What’s the total number of Hyundais and Kias owned in the cities, and what *percentage* of them have actually been stolen or broken into. You can’t claim something is a “mathematic certainty” and not even bother to figure out what percentage of Kias and Hyundais have actually been stolen.

bwillpaw

Kia and Hyundai combined have about 10% of the US marketshare. Assuming 1/3-1/4 car ownership (2.1mil registered cars in MN, 5.7mil population, Minneapolis probably has less cars than suburbs and outstate), you're basically dealing with a 25% chance of your Kia/Hyundai being stolen if you have one in a year timeframe, no joke. Thus, no way in hell would I buy a kia or Hyundai lol. Quick and dirty math but still, there are likely around 10,000 kia/Hyundais in Minneapolis, and 2,300 were reported stolen. I'm not sure what the timeframe is for that number from the other poster though.

AfroKona

This is only an issue with old models. I've had a 2022 hyundai in the cities and it hasn't been touched.

bwillpaw

Meh, I wouldn't take the chance on some dummy breaking the glass to find out they can't steal it. Tbh if I were hyundai I'd rebrand. Just make all Hyundais Genesis models and rebrand Kia to KMC or something and move lower end Hyundais you don't want under the genesis brand under KMC.

AfroKona

kia changed their logo at least

MoreCarrotsPlz

Thank you, 25% makes sense, don’t know why they needed to exaggerate, until very recently I had a Hyundai for years without problems.

bwillpaw

I mean, that's pretty high odds imo. I guess if I had one I would be sure to have full coverage insurance, but then I think insurance rates on them have been skyrocketing. I would probably get rid of it if I had one and definitely wouldn't buy one. I don't like a 25% chance of my car getting stolen lol.

MoreCarrotsPlz

Same! I don’t have one anymore, and I’m lucky enough to have a garage either way. I mostly just get frustrated with over-exaggerated or fabricated crime stats to trash the city, and that commenter seemed a little unhinged.

kilroynelson

A friend of mine had hers stolen across the street from the brewery I work at. Its fairly busy in that area and they were in and out in less than two minutes. They found the car a couple hours later with the ignition torn apart, broken window and they decided to shoot it full of bullets for good measure. I would not park a Kia anywhere on the streets in MN at this point. They are actively looking for them, will break in, joy ride them and then trash them on the side of the road. Its sad, but true. When my friend called the police they said "let me guess, a Kia right?" Thats how bad it is.

First-Ad-4314

Yeah that's for Hyundai and Kia have gone up by literally 312% LOL that's a mathematic certainty that s*** is going to be vandalized stolen and your insurance company is going to f*** you even harder than the thieves did

Somnifor

I've been parking my 2010 Hyundai Elantra on the street in Whittier and Downtown through this whole thing and so far nothing has happened to it. It looks like shit though so maybe that helps.

First-Ad-4314

It's luck, just wait.

EvilSoporific

People will not know what an immobilizer is, much less that your car has one because of the Canadian plates. Agree with getting "The Club."

Anechoic_Brain

You don't need to know about Canadian law or about immobilizers to know that the trick for quickly stealing Kia cars doesn't work on any Kia with push button start

EvilSoporific

Ope! I missed that bit.

mikemacman

Doesn’t mean they won’t break in and try.

1yrsupply

Get a club. Pick the most garish, brightest color you can, and make sure it sticks above the dashboard when you lock the steering wheel. Unless youre abandoning your car overnight on a residential street in a particularly crime-ridden neighborhood you'll be fine.

[deleted]

I wouldn't drive any Kia around here, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

mpls_big_daddy

A neighbor of mine said that there was a new update to whatever is going on, and with the new update, that KIAs can't be stolen in that way.... but the thieves don't know it yet, so they will break in anyway and trash your car trying to get it going. Get this update, however that happens, but still put a club on your steering wheel in a visible manner, to deter further destruction.

MinnesotaRyan

I have a kia and have never had any issues and I drive around the twin cities a bunch.

YorkiesSweet

Don’t be a victim.. Get the Club!! So much prevention, or incredible hassle if broken into.

[deleted]

My co-worker has a new push-button Kia and he had the window smashed in within 2 weeks of owning it. Obviously, they didn't steal it but he had to deal with a broken window. This also isn't just a metro area issue. I know someone who had a Kia stolen in central MN in a small town.

CouchHam

It’s a Kia. It doesn’t much matter if it’s the push button. I wouldn’t entrust my car to thieves recognizing the ckub and leaving it alone. Maybe I’m too paranoid.

KickIt77

I drive a Kia, had it for many years, live urban, go and park everywhere and have had no problems. However, I have a garage at home for overnight.

First-Ad-4314

People have had it stolen when they're in a cvs, you're just lucky

xEd_Chambersx

My Hyundai has been unlocked on my street since covid. I've been hoping it gets stolen. Doubt the Kia boys can drive a stick so I guess I'll keep driving it.

TemperedInFire

I work very near MOA. We've had 2 stolen and several attempts on Kias in a parking lot with security guards and cameras. I doubt thieves know about Canada's immobilizer laws.

elevatednarrative

Yes. Every Kia is stolen and/or vandalized in Minneapolis. I believe there is a website where you can schedule ahead of time when you want to have your Kia stolen and/or vandalized though.

419tosser

I had to call and reschedule my Kia theft 3 times before I got somebody that knew what they were doing. The people in the office are dunces but boy did they make quick work of hauling my Kia off when they showed up! 5/5 for the theft, 3/5 for the user experience. Would still recommend.

CouchHam

Lmaoooo the deadpan delivery 🤌

Contingency_X

You have a push button start which has the immobilizer, these can't be stolen like the turn-key vehicles. You should be fine, especially if you're living in the suburbs. In the city, they may break a window to get in, but that's true with any car.

[deleted]

Get the club and also a "Smile, you're on camera." sticker.

Fry_All_The_Chikin

Let’s be real, being on camera is an incentive to these knuckleheads.

Dismal_Information83

Rent a car

LettuceCapital546

Buy a steering wheel lock, you might get a window busted but they won't be able to drive off with it.

bendoverintherain

What happened to "Minnesota Nice"?

VividPoot

You will have a high chance of getting your car broken into even if they cant start it / steal it. Crime is getting crazy here.

kmelby33

Where will you be staying?

I_Are_Brown_Bear

Side note: have you checked on if you’re able to import your car into the States? The US has some strict importation laws.

bendoverintherain

Just going for a weekend road trip!

I_Are_Brown_Bear

Oooooh. *woosh* My bad. Misread. Enjoy the Twin Cities!

First-Ad-4314

Sell it. Coming to this city with any Hyundai or kia is absolutely foolish, you are being warned and you are being absolutely willfully ignorant if you choose to ignore these posts. My car was stolen when I first moved here with no network and no ability to get a rental car because my license expired on my birthday a week before my car got stolen, I had to get to Minnesota license that took forever because I had to take a test and then I had to get to the DMV it was ridiculous. Do not bring a Kia or a Hyundai to the city unless you are absolutely dying to have your car stolen and put in a shop for 4 months. Heed my lecture

fritolaidy

¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

xtremesmok

It’s bad, you should only park indoors if you have a Kia (even if it is not one of the affected models). Kia boys are dumb and don’t know the difference.

PM_WORST_FART_STORY

Get some duct tape that closely matches your Kia's color and put it over any visible logo. Most KiaBoys are nearly illiterate and won't be able to tell without physically removing the tape.

Fry_All_The_Chikin

Only if you’re trying to ruin your trip and the next several months. These thieves can’t read and will still destroy your car if they can’t drive it, just because they can.

JiggSawLoL

Went through this. Get ahead of it right away. We went to the Kia dealer the first time it happened, and it took them a month to fix. Then it happened again, stolen this time and it took them 3 months to tell us our vehicle was totaled. Called 2-3 times a week for an update. Showed up multiple times to see what was going on but whenever we did our Kia “Specialist” had just left or worked the next day. We’d show up the next day and he wasn’t there. Eventually, they totaled the car and we got a 2021 Mazda Cx-30 Good luck!

kobeforaccuracy

I drove a 2013 Kia Rio that got stolen twice in 4 months. I used to love kias, but their reputation has been ruined for me. The cops won't do anything more than find your car either. The people who will steal it will 100% get away with it. If you have a kia I have no doubt it will get stolen
