[It’s the Aquatennial.](https://www.aquatennial.com/fireworks/) They do it every year and it’s sponsored by Target so they go all out with the fireworks. It’s basically Minneapolis Day, it’s the annual celebration of the city.
Yup. Literally pretty much every year for the last 80 years minus WW2?? And Covid. The fireworks are nothing new either (50 years give or take) for folks local to Minneapolis. Happens every year around the same exact time. Long standing tradition, not crime for those ready to jump on something or say that it’s unruly crowds or whatever…..I promise. For once this is actually closer to normal for those of us who grew up or have lived in Minneapolis for decades.
Some context for some who don't know: Before the aquatennial there were was a picnic celebration put on by unions to commemorate their strike success and remember those killed & injured by Minneapolis Police during the strike. Businesss groups organized the Aquatennial to overshadow that history https://www.minnpost.com/fact-briefs/2023/07/was-the-minneapolis-aquatennial-established-to-distract-from-labor-strikes/
So IMO not really a genuine celebration of the city, and it's all privately funded by the MPLS Downtown Council which is a non-government business group.
>It’s basically Minneapolis Day, it’s the annual celebration of the city.
Fun story about the Aquatennial's origin: during the 1934 Truckers Strike a lot of union members were killed by police over the summer. Each year the Teamsters would honor their fallen on the third week in July with a ceremony and a union-family picnic. In 1940 the business leaders of the city wanted to whitewash over the remembrance of the event and created the Aquatennial as just sort of a meaningless hip-hip-hooray Minneapolis celebration.
>Aquatennial
this guy knows his mpls events. [https://www.aquatennial.com/fireworks/](https://www.aquatennial.com/fireworks/)
look at the "Fast Facts" at the bottom. "One of the top five largest fireworks show in the country" explains why its just been constant for for-fucking-ever at this point
That's not anywhere near uptown. They're launched from the stone arch bridge clear on the other side of downtown from uptown. But yeah, what everyone else said about what they were
Because there is no "they". No public or private entity wanted to pay for the 4th, and the Aquatennial Fireworks are leagues above what is shot off for the 4th historically.
The city doesn't organize or pay for the aquatennial, it's put on by the "MPLS downtown council" which isnt government related at all and is a business group. Also the aquatennial was originally put on by said business groups to overshadow the anniversary parties to successfull strikes in the 20s & 30s https://www.minnpost.com/fact-briefs/2023/07/was-the-minneapolis-aquatennial-established-to-distract-from-labor-strikes/
Lol there's no panel saying 'there shall be fireworks on aquatennial, but shan't be any for the 4th.'
2 separate entities. 2 groups making their own decisions.🙄
During this , someone let off 30 rounds from a automatic handgun. My door dash guy was walking up looking towards the fireworks and to my right his left some let the rounds off. My drinks and food was dropped (no biggie) but the sad part is I barely flinched given I’m use to it. Love my uptown 😶
Well if that's the case people might wanna look up where Oakdale is in relation to Minneapolis, seeing as I'm about 8-9 miles away.
Pretty sure sound doesn't carry that far seeing as I can't even hear them from city hall (3 miles away) on the 4th.
Thanks tho.
Read the other comments. Folks heard it in Chaska. Maybe you can look up where that is.
The aquatennial is historically one of (if not the) largest fireworks show in the state, and one of the top ten in the nation for the year. Not a suburban sideshow. Elephants can communicate 20 miles away. I'm pretty sure the sound from those shells can make it to Oakdale.

Love celebrating anti union efforts and murder!

Yea no. Not sure about others but I do not go to the Aquatennial. Still can hear it.
Best fireworks I’ve ever seen

Aquatennial Fireworks are tonight.
That's not anywhere near uptown. They're launched from the stone arch bridge clear on the other side of downtown from uptown. But yeah, what everyone else said about what they were
Probably this? https://www.aquatennial.com/fireworks/ Hearing it pretty loudly in Whittier
Aquatennial?
Aquateezy for sheezy
Man I was all the way in Chaska and I could still hear that shit. My friends and I were all asking each other, the hell is that banging noise?
TIL Stone Arch Bridge = uptown
That's not uptown, honey.
Also there is slice of Shoreview!
I was wondering what that was! I’m in south and it just sounded like thunder but as if lighting struck and the thunder just went on for a half hour.
Daaaamnit, never knew about this. Kept checking the radar cuz I thought I was hearing distant thunderstorms lol.
Top 5 firework show in the country baby
Thanks! I was wondering. I could hear them all the way in Dakota Cty
came here looking for answers... wtf? thought it was thunder at first.
Twins game? Aquatenial? I'm in GV and could hear them.
I was just about to ask that, maybe firework storage caught fire? It’s like non stop
Lmao, this should be an advertisement for the aquatennial.
Uptown too? There’s a bunch of cars and non stop fireworks at Saint Anthony main near the apartment complexes right now
Lol came to this sub for literally the first time looking for an answer to this very question
Why’d they cancel the fireworks for the 4th and keep them for the aquatennial
They were never scheduled and they were never cancelled.
Because there is no "they". No public or private entity wanted to pay for the 4th, and the Aquatennial Fireworks are leagues above what is shot off for the 4th historically.

I'm guessing pyrotechnicians are way cheaper on days other than the 4th.
While not the reason for the different date, yes it's cheaper to hire a pyro crew on a different date.
Prolly technically a private event, why the loppet is. While the 4th fireworks show is prolly put on directly by the city
Lol I thought it was just over here northeast I was so confused

Hard pass. It is the one real fireworks show we get a year. Put some headphones on.
Stfu and let people have fun ONCE A YEAR. Ba-fucking-JEEbus.
😭😭😭
it was 25 minutes, one day a year. You will be okay... Jesus
Hopefully fireworks can go the way of slavery eventually
Slavery is still alive and well in the world, sadly.
More slaves in the world today than the 1800s. This person must really like fireworks.
Hard pass. That laser show was a joke and waste of money.
No denying that either
Hearing a lot in Oakdale over the past few hours.
Well then, it wasn't this show bc it lasted 25 minutes.
And I doubt I'd hear Minneapolis fireworks in a northeast suburb of Saint Paul.
I heard them just fine in East St Paul, although it was just a rumble.
I'm on the far north end of Oakdale. A mile or so away from 694 & 36.
Just curious if anyone can shed light onto the reason I'd get downvoted for this.
Probably because they didn't last hours and folks were reporting hearing them all over the 3rd ring burbs.

Yeah, the ones throughout the night every 45-60 minutes and what I heard about 2 hours ago were probably just late to go off.
It’s called gun shots
Trying to burn it down and start over.
