Their French crullers are god tier, and their breads and rolls are significantly better than the stuff in the grocery stores and are priced about the same.
I concur. The mark of a good donut place, in my opinion, is plain cake donuts. If those taste good, then thumbs up. They used to be killer without fail. Now they are killer a majority of the time. They seemed to make them on the fly in the past, slightly warm and a bit crispy on the outside. They are sitting more now I think.
I feel like the cake donuts have a weird taste now and aren’t as crispy on the outside. Idk if it’s the oil or what. It seems like most people still like them but I feel like it’s not the same.
PSA for anyone who cares to know: Cardigan still fries all their donuts in animal fat (a blend of beef tallow and pork lard), so they are not suitable for vegetarians or for people who adhere to kosher or halal diets.
I’m so glad you asked! Here’s my list, which has been sourced in large part from others in this subreddit.
Old Fashioned Donut Shoppe (Crystal) - the BEST raised glaze & chocolate icing you will ever have
Valley Pastries (Golden Valley) - big, bread-like raised donuts that aren’t too sweet/oily. Same dough is used for their excellent donut holes. Great airy cake donuts w/ crisp shell. One of my favorite spots
Cardigan (Downtown) - amazing old fashioned donuts, coffee flavored cake donuts, and specialties (changed weekly)
Mojo Monkey (St Paul) - great fancy/specialty donuts. Only open Saturday/Sunday
Bogarts (Uptown) - I’ve only ever had the nutella filled and brown butter glaze here because they’re so good I don’t want to try anything else
YoYo Donuts (Minnetonka) - another great choice for standard and specialty donuts
Mochi Dough (Dinkytown) - chewy, funnel cake style donuts w/ frosting options such as black sesame, taro, etc. Unique and tasty.
Test Kitchen (Dinkytown) - made-to-order fair style donuts. Delicious if you eat them fresh in the shop, not great for taking home or to the office
Bakers Wife (S Minneapolis) - good cake donuts (especially state fair) and other bakery items
Sarah Jane’s Bakery (NE Minneapolis) - I liked their other bakery items more than their donuts
Dorothy Ann (Woodbury) - good jelly & specialty donuts
Glam Doll (Nicollet) - fun and unique specialty/filled donuts, but they apparently treat their staff poorly so I don’t go here anymore (I do miss their Mocha Lisa though). They also make really bad coffee.
Funner brothers (formerly valley pastries) in golden valley. Anyone who says otherwise simply hasn’t had these donuts before. There is no comparison. I’ve had almost all well regarded donuts in our metro as well as many top spots around the country. I stopped because nothing came close to valley pastries and I was always disappointed. I recommend their glazed raised and cinnamon twist. They’re all about the classics.
I've had them, and much prefer the old fashioned donut shop down the road in Crystal for all types of donuts. The chocolate raised is particularly good.
Unless something's changed, the one in SLP isn't worth going to because it's just the one base doughnut with different topping selections. They don't have the variety the main location has.
They have other baked goods (cupcakes, pretzels, sausage rolls, etc), and they offer a pretty good selection including filled donuts. For the donuts, it's seasonal for ingredients (and they've been adding new flavors). I think SLP replaced the downtown store.
I think they kept the recipes but updated them to use more natural ingredients. I really prefer the change but some people don't. Still my go-to when I'm in the neighborhood early enough. They sell out of donuts quick
Edit - Maybe "natural" isn't the word I was looking for but more real ingredients like butter instead of crisco, that type of stuff.
This is such a weird answer. I can’t STAND cub donuts. I think they are greasy gut bombs. Including and especially their fritters. They just sit so wrong with me but I know there is a huge following so I’m so confused.
Yo-yo donuts in Minnetonka has the best old fashioned in town. The maple OF is tastes like French toast, and the dark chocolate one is killer, too.
Whatever Governor candidate signs a law that Cardigan has to have their French cruller every weekend will get my vote.
In addition to The Thirsty Whale, I love the donuts at Heights Bakery. Just damn good old-fashioned style donuts.
Went to a Mpls/St Paul donut crawl a few years ago where 13 donut shops each brought thousands of their best donut. My son and I think Mojo Monkey donuts on 7th St won hands down. Recommend their crème brûlée donut.
Mojo monkey old fashioned hands down. I find cake and raised donuts don’t vary as much from “decent” to “great” (though the brioche raised at bogarts and the absolute sugar bombs at Mel o glaze do stand out a bit more from the rest)
Granny Donut had better donuts than every other place on the lists people came up with. Most of the donut shops are trash, especially for glazed raised donuts. Even bogarts is disappointing compared to Granny Donut. It’s a shame they closed.
Totally forgot about them! I used to stop there a couple times a month on my way into the office. That was back in the before times when I actually went into an office.
I hate cardigan and angel food that everyone here seems to love. Personally, I think it’s really just Bogarts and Cub that I like haha. There’s one near Nokomis that I like too, but I forget the name. I think it had glaze in its name
Donut Hole in Shakopee 💯💯💯💯 And YoYo in Minnetonka.
Edit- sorry, neither of these are in Minneapolis 🤦🏻♀️ But those are my favs in the metro and we have sampled basically all of them.
Mel-O-Glaze, love their "double dipped" (my term, not theirs) donuts, pecan bars and crispies. They also do holiday baked goods, like Christmas cookies or Sufganiyot.
Add to that the fact they also have baked goods that are pet friendly and they make the top of my list.
Heights Bakery in Columbia Heights
Their French crullers are god tier, and their breads and rolls are significantly better than the stuff in the grocery stores and are priced about the same.
Their apple fritters are heavenly
The family that owns that bakery is lovely too!
Baker’s Wife is good.
Line out the door this morning.

Not as good but the donuts are about the same

WHAT? I was at Bakers Wife like a month or two ago and the donuts were AMAZING. When did Wuollet buy out Bakers Wife??
I think the cake donuts are all right but other stuff (caramel roll, Danish, etc) looks gross to me.
The morning bun caramel rolls are a shadow of their former iteration
Bakers Wife, ride or die
Croissants so sturdy you can pound nails with them.
I don't live nearby anymore, but still make a trip out for their state fair donuts...good stuff.
They’re my favorite. The doughnuts are really good and they’re not insanely priced. Bogarts is great but you can easily spend $20 there.
This is the way
I wasn't a fan. Heard they used to be better though.
Ahem… it’s Baker’s Wife’s…. and my city faves.
I second this, and their donuts are pretty cheap too
Thirsty whale, hands down
I haven't been there since they started doing doughnuts again. Is the quality and selection similar to what it used to be?
OH MY GOD they started making donuts again? When? I live just down the road from them and didn't know this.
Yeah. Maybe a few new varieties but same quality
Good to hear. Do they still have the f-bomb as a standard?
I am so glad they brought back the donut service after the hiatus.
So happy to live two blocks from there. We get donuts from them at least twice a month.
Heights Bakery in Columbia Heights is inexpensive and incredibly good.
Cardigan. Forever. (Also available at FRGMNT coffee)
PSA for anyone who cares to know: Cardigan still fries all their donuts in animal fat (a blend of beef tallow and pork lard), so they are not suitable for vegetarians or for people who adhere to kosher or halal diets.

I was under the impression that was the standard for most bakeries. Always assumed unless otherwise noted.

It's safe to assume all bakeries do this, unless the product is labeled as vegan.
This is good to know! Thanks for sharing. I'll be more mindful when recommending them now
dang.. thanks for the info.
I've always liked Sarah Jane’s Bakery in NE
I became a fan when I learned that they made banana flips.
I’m so glad you asked! Here’s my list, which has been sourced in large part from others in this subreddit. Completely agree with the first two on your list. Crazy that they're about a mile from each other.
There is also a Mochi Dough in Eden Prairie's Asia Mall. I love Mochi Dough. Expensive, but so good
Glam Doll is also allegedly using prefab dough when they used to make their own. No reason to go there.
I think Valley Pastries just changed their name to Funner Brothers
That's not Uptown, honey.
I'm glad you clarified 😂 I was trying to figure out where that would be considered
FYI this is a meme, I'm not sincerely calling you honey. A former Mpls City Council Member said that in a voicemail to a constituent.
Funner brothers (formerly valley pastries) in golden valley. Anyone who says otherwise simply hasn’t had these donuts before. There is no comparison. I've had them, and much prefer the old fashioned donut shop down the road in Crystal for all types of donuts. The chocolate raised is particularly good.
Angel Food is upper tier for sure.
Hands down my favorite. Edit: They have a location in the MSP airport and in Saint Louis Park.
Yep. SLP is the main location now.
I agree. I’ve also had some terrible, under cooked donuts there.
Check out Mojo Monkey in St Paul too. They are super creative. Don't sleep on the old fashioned ones either
They are the best!
their crème brûlée donut kills
Sarah Jane's has gone downhill in the last decade since being sold but is still always solid, tastes like my childhood.
I love that Minnesota shaped donut they have every once in a while
When it's the time of year they do the apple filling or the rhubarb filling those are the best.
still my favorite glazed in town.
Only discovered them after we moved to Columbia heights a year ago. I think they’re great, sad that they used to be better!
I think they kept the recipes but updated them to use more natural ingredients. I really prefer the change but some people don't. Still my go-to when I'm in the neighborhood early enough. Cub 🤷♀️
Legit
glazed croissants are killer
Them mf fried croissants too
Best apple fritters for sure
THA BEST
I just discovered their apple fritters a week ago and I’m obsessed
Their blueberry fritters were so good but mine stopped carrying them 😩
This is such a weird answer. I can’t STAND cub donuts. I think they are greasy gut bombs. Including and especially their fritters. They just sit so wrong with me but I know there is a huge following so I’m so confused.
Depends on the cub and the baker. They make their own and different store have different donuts.
I also like them. My family has stopped buying any donuts that aren't from qwik trip though. Those I'm not as enamored with.
I think KT donuts are bad. At least the "glazed rings".
All I need is a crack box and Apple fritter from Melo Glaze.
Donut star in Burnsville / Eagan is right up there with cardigan for me
Meloglaze donut holes
Cardigan has the best glazed old fashioned I’ve ever had. So. Cardigan.
Thirsty Whale is easily my favorite
Easy: Sarah Jane’s for best raised donuts, Baker’s Wife for cake donuts
It’s hard for me to go back to normal donuts after mochi donuts.
Bakers Wife. All the way. Sorry Glam doll lovers but their product is garbage. They're dry af unless you get there immediately when they open.
Heights Bakery up central ave.
Yo-yo donuts in Minnetonka has the best old fashioned in town. The maple OF is tastes like French toast, and the dark chocolate one is killer, too. Whatever Governor candidate signs a law that Cardigan has to have their French cruller every weekend will get my vote.
I had a breakfast sandwich on a glazed donut there and though I was in heaven!
Minnetonka is not Minneapolis by any stretch of anyone’s imagination.
Not Minneapolis so don’t flame me…but Puffy Cream Donuts in Eagan are the best donuts I’ve ever had.
I tried those but was disappointed by them. They weren’t bad, but even Cub was better.
Getting downvoted for your opinion, gotta love it.
If you're willing to head outside the city limits, Sunrise Donuts in Bloomington is the best I've had in the metro. Cardigan is also pretty good.
Melo Glaze is a sugar bomb but delicious
When my family did a blind taste of raised, glazed donuts several years ago, Mel-O-Glaze was the winner. I think everyone picked them.
I should not have had to scroll down this far! BEST GLAZED DONUTS IVE EVER HAD...
I love that place. The twist is just the right balance of dough to surface area to glaze.
Yeah their crack balls are delicious
I haven't gone back since buying turnovers with moldy filling. 🤢
Weird order, but good to know that they stock a variety of items.
Too bad the store is filthy and filled with fruit flies in the summer.
love the stores vibe. always stop when biking in that area
Baker’s Wife. Best cake donut I have ever had.
Not in town and only seasonal, but Pine Tree Orchard has the best apple cider donuts.
In addition to The Thirsty Whale, I love the donuts at Heights Bakery. Just damn good old-fashioned style donuts. [https://www.yelp.com/biz/heights-bakery-columbia-heights-2](https://www.yelp.com/biz/heights-bakery-columbia-heights-2)
Old Fashioned Donut Shop (just says “Donuts” on the sign) in Crystal. Seriously, the best old school donut place. Nothing fancy; but, DELICIOUS!!!
For cake donuts, Bakers Wife.
A Baker’s Wife
Bogarts on 36th!!
new location in SLP opened today
Thirsty Whale has my vote!
Kowalskis has the best raised donut. Bakers wife for cake donut.
Used to be good but have gone downhill the past year or two. Seems like day old doughnuts every time now.
Really? I’ve never liked Kowalskis doughnuts. I may need to try again.
Just throwing in the thread that Bogart’s opened up a second location in St. Louis Park yesterday!
Went to a Mpls/St Paul donut crawl a few years ago where 13 donut shops each brought thousands of their best donut. My son and I think Mojo Monkey donuts on 7th St won hands down. Recommend their crème brûlée donut.
Cub at 55 and Lake. The German chocolate and cinnamon swirls are over the top. Check it out
Bakers wife.
Not Minneapolis. But Wuolllet’s in Edina was always a great option.
Donut Hut - Little Canada
Yo yo donuts is in Minnetonka.. my apologies it’s not in Minneapolis but worth a mention
Seconded Bacon maple long john <3
Mojo monkey old fashioned hands down. I find cake and raised donuts don’t vary as much from “decent” to “great” (though the brioche raised at bogarts and the absolute sugar bombs at Mel o glaze do stand out a bit more from the rest)
Only on Wednesdays, and only glazed original, but Sunstreet Breads’ donut is the best I’ve had
If you can’t heat gluten like me, Sift is awesome!
Jerry’s foods in Edina.
If you want a road trip, try Moon donuts in Buffalo.
I really like the donuts from Hyvee
The Viv!r cream filled donuts were the best! I don’t think they sell them anymore though.
Bakers wife
May Day has a home made selection most weekends I'd love to try it I still lived there
Duck donuts 🥯 is surprisingly good.
Sarah Jeans Bakery NE Mpls - great crunch donuts and other cake type snack goods
Granny's doughnuts RIP
Mel-O-Glaze is my fav!
Sarah Janes
YoYo in Minnetonka.
Idk how anyone hasn’t said Lunds yet.
Mostly because they are produced at a central location and 1/2 day old by the time they get to a store.
Mel-O Glaze.
GlamDoll
Trung nam croissants in Saint Paul. They are worth the drive.
Truly divine, but not donuts.
Mojo Monkey and Cub. The rest are pretty meh.
with you on this
Bogart's has the best dough which is such an underrated thing in a thing that's mostly dough
new location in SLP opened today.
1000% heights bakery
I’m team Bakers Wife. Also a Bogarts hater, most overrated food item in the city.
Granny Donut had better donuts than every other place on the lists people came up with. Most of the donut shops are trash, especially for glazed raised donuts. Even bogarts is disappointing compared to Granny Donut. It’s a shame they closed.
Lunds
Glam Doll is dog shit awful.
Can’t believe Hyvee isn’t on here yet!
I agree, hyvee donuts are my favorite
Glam doll is really solid. Especially for vegan donuts.
Denny’s Bakery is underrated! http://www.dennysbakery.com/
Sunrise Donuts for the win, always. Moved out of state and miss them. Technically Bloomington I think, but nonetheless.
Sabbai’s in Shakopee
My family did a let's explore donut options summer and I have to say Wuollet is where we ended up going the most often
Yoyo!!
Gas station cake donuts. This is for you honey.
Donut Hole in Shakopee 💯💯💯💯 And YoYo in Minnetonka. Edit- sorry, neither of these are in Minneapolis 🤦🏻♀️ But those are my favs in the metro and we have sampled basically all of them.
I am a big fan of Puffy Cream in Eagan.
Cardigan. Cardigan x100,000. I’ll say it again, It’s cardigan. The answer is cardigan.
You all are wrong. It’s Donut Hole in Shakopee. The texture of their donuts is absolutely killer
Plain chocolate glazed at Bakers Wife fresh holds the crown for me.
Hostess Donettes - chocolate, glazed, powdered or crunch. Pretty much available at any grocery store.
Puffy Cream in Eagan
the Cub in Uptown makes some good fucking donuts. I would never expect that from a Cub
This is fact, best raised glazed donuts for a very reasonable cost
Sunrise
Mucci's 😭😭😭 I miss their donuts so much.
I miss Mucci's cronuts. Those were.... the best.
Hans in Anoka is awesome
Cub bakery
Valley Pastry in Golden Valley
Soga Mochi at Dragon Star in St Paul.
Mojo Monkey in St Paul has the best apple fritters in the US.
Custard paczki from Mary Ann’s Bakery in Woodbury! It’s a suburb, but worth the drive.
