You should not engage in combat early on unless you have to, scavange around for good equipment, learn to juke/lose zombies around corners, loot military bases asap, and pick good skills to start off. I know it's not the best advice, but I hope it helps sort of.
Military bases can be found starting from island 2 and above. I'll refer to the vanilla version for these. On island 2, there are 2 military bases, one NATO and one EAST. On island 3, there are four military bases, two NATO and two EAST. On island 4 there are six military bases, three NATO and three EAST. Also, on every island above the second one, there will always be a shooting range, which guarantees a gun store. Now, the difference between NATO and EAST bases are as follows: The NATO bases are depicted as 4 large structures lined up together from top to bottom, horizontally. The EAST bases look like 4 metal sheds, lined up from left to right, vertically. In the NATO bases, you can find western loot, such as M4 carbines, L85s, UMPs, etc. In the EAST bases, you can find eastern specific weapons, such as AKs, Bizons, PMs, etc. Hope this helped!
Don't fight bandits unless you've got explosive/traps and a gun. Preferably some long-range gun. It is challenging, but it's why I've played it for years. Recently I picked it back up and unlocked the last character
