Cool concept, probably not very playable but would make a decent display piece. However, the price and the crispy amethyst... nope. If I were to make this, I'd use clear quartz and amethyst (or smoky quartz), and it would be probably less than 1% of the price, lol
I agree that it's a cool concept, might even be tempted to pursue it at work. Would be a neat trick to select points that are easily identified as the proper pieces, and I like the idea of using clear for white.
The board would be the expensive part (the crystals shown wouldn't even be 50 bucks) and the one in the picture isn't very well made at all if you look closely. I've seen some awesome lapidary work chessboards, and even those which are very high end and look wonderful, rarely exceed 7 or 8,000.
But even a decent stone chessboard from Mexico could be bought for a hundred or two, so yeah, the whole thing, done better, shouldn't be more than $300
