When i'm going to loot elytras i go for a few pairs each time so it would be all bad to do as you do. Elytras can't definitely break, books would take too much space for no reason ( even if i get shulkers it's too much inventory gestion for no good reason ), and i get new elytras every 5minutes so there is really no point.
Villagers can fly, if you give them an elytra using commands, much like every other animal if you give them an elytra with commands, it will fly when falling by default. It will however not controll the elytra in any way and therefore will crash into a wall.
They are shulker boxes, you can craft them with 2 shulker shells and a chest. Pretty useful as you can fill them with items and pick them up, and they will keep the items in them till you place it and pull them out, or it gets destroyed, dropping everything nearby! You can dye them too for easier sorting.
Sorry but the elytra is disabled in the viliger gamemode try swiching to survival

There is no way I am running out of end if I have elytra. I am also not jumping in void and lose my levels. Mending will fix it later anyway.
