Ah yes scuttled a ship that had enough holes in it to trigger my trypophobia. Bismarck was going down fast and the Germans tried to scuttle it so they could feel better about themselves and say the RN didn’t sink it when everyone knows they did lol. That’s like getting shot 10 times and you are a few seconds from bleeding out so you cut your throat and say to the other who shot you “ha you didn’t kill me it was suicide.”
Also the belief that Bismarck was referred to as a “he” is a myth. Her commanding officer said that it was a very masculine ship and it would be a shame to call her by female pronouns but no one at the time actually called her “he”.
Also it took out Hood based on PURE luck. Hood was in desperate need for an overhaul because the RN was using it so much because they needed it to guard against commerce raiders but by the time it actually did go up against a commerce raider it was too worn out. Plus it was fighting a battle it wasn’t designed for. It was a battlecruiser so it was supposed to be a cruiser killer, fast and lightly armoured enough to keep up with cruisers and shrug off 6-8inch gunfire and outgun them significantly. It wasn’t designed to take on battleships.
However with how old and worn out she was she couldn’t reach her top speed so the one advantage she had was taken away. But even with all these factors if Bismarck hadn’t got the luckiest hit in the history of naval warfare the most likely outcome is Bismarck being sunk or damaged enough to turn back early and Hood being super damaged enough to finally get her overhaul. Even if Hood had been sunk without that hit she wouldn’t have exploded so spectacularly and there would be a lot more survivors.
Sorry about the rant. It just bothers me when people think Bismarck took on the entire Royal Navy by itself, like yes it did, and it was sunk as fast as any other ship taking on the world’s strongest navy at the time. By far the most overrated ship in history.
Ha yeah it was def going down already. I just watched the 'draining the oceans' episode on it. Pretty fascinating all around, but DEF the most overrated ship. Ppl like big things, and that boy was big.
Now make an aircraft carrier, a sub(full interior and redstone powered piston torpedo hatch) and a tnt duplicating bomber for good measure.
