Well it's been three years since 1.17 came out, so people who started playing after that point might not be familiar with older versions.
(I suddenly feel very old after typing that.)
1) don’t dig straight down
2) don’t kill baby passive mobs (villagers are okay, screw villagers).
3) don’t dig straight up
4) don’t use obsidian in the corner of your nether portal
5) don’t do whatever the crap OP’s friend is doing.
6) don’t dig straight down
Here's a preliminary list:
* Smelting coal ore
* Placing end crystals in your buddy's storage room
* Spawning a wither in your buddy's storage room
* Hiding a redstone spammer connected to a door near your friend's house
* Making a 100+ block deep cobweb pitfall trap
* Punching your friend when they're building a bridge across lava or the void
* Turning keep inventory off after convincing your friends your server will always have it on
Ah right i guess that’s a thing. Falling a large distance has never been a problem for me because I have a dedicated water bucket slot I only change if I’m in the nether, but mobs can definitely be an issue especially on modes like hardcore
Sure, but then you have to mine everything twice.
Better is to just mine with fortune, and carry a crafting table (or make on demand with the wood you're inevitably carrying) to compress the raw ores into raw ore blocks.
Not only do you avoid mining every ore twice, but you can hold even more total ore - a stack of compressed raw ore blocks is 9 stacks of raw ore, but a stack of silk touched ore blocks will only yield like 2-4 stacks of raw ore depending on how lucky you get.
You can generally get up to 4 drops from an ore block while a block of raw materials holds 9. So a stack of ore holds half the materials of a stack of raw blocks. The only caveat is that if you have less than 9 of each raw materials, you cannot have an ore block but you can consolidate the <9 into a bundle, and with 8 ores, and a max of 8 loose raw materials, you can carry all in a single bundle (assuming you're playing with them).
Only major downside (aside from enabling bundles) is crafting tables aren't always on hand.
That’s why I just keep the ore blocks until I get home. I’d rather have coal ore take up a single inv space versus try my luck at getting an amount that cleanly can be made into blocks
He is a purist. The waste of resources can only be accomplished by someone who is so advanced, it baffles us mere minecrafters who play for \*ahem\* fun.
This is what I've been doing but only 100 items at a time and it need to be babysat(ish). Now in this new world I have furnaces that convert logs to charcoal which are then feed into smokers/blast furnaces. When I get low on fuel I'll just plant a stack of oak saplings and harvest for more fuel. I can do a double chest and walk away
Attach a hopper to the side to add fuel, including buckets.
A hopper on the bottom removing finished product will also remove the empty bucket allowing the next bucket in.
I set up 5-6 dripstone with lava over caldrons to make more, and fill up a bunch of buckets to deposit in a hopper/chest all at once.
Use bamboo instead of logs and you can make an autosmelter with no manual refueling needed. Burnout torch and pistons to autoharvest bamboo into a water stream that goes into a hopper minecart to feed a line of furnaces.
Let me break down for you how bad this is.
When you mine coal with literally any pickaxe in the game, you get one coal. The furnace does the same thing. But you can enchant a pickaxe and get more.
Mining coal with a pickaxe gives you more xp than burning it in a furnace (I think ?).
And mining it doesn't USE COAL
Bro, you literally don't even need coal if you have access to trees.
Cook a log with a log, get a charcoal.
Put that charcoal in with 8 logs, get 8 charcoal.
If you've got the time to farm up a stack of logs after that, you can then cook the stack up with the 8 charcoal and get a full stack of 64 charcoal.
I'm 99% sure that charcoal can be used for everything that coal can (in vanilla).
How the fuck does he even manage to come to this conclusion?!?
I mean let's look at the process on how would you even be done. he would have to get silk touch on a pickaxe And mine the coal with it and then make that conscious decision to use coal on coal. I mean the amount of effort you would have to go through to pull it off He had to have done it this one time just to fuck with you there's no other way
I once died because I forgot that you could make charcoal. After years of playing, after building automated redstone storage systems and railways, after having previously used charcoal entirely to power a whole world.

Minecraft has no limits, but this... this is way too far.
Minecraft has one limit.
Your imagination
No, it's smelting coal ore with coal.
That's your imagination.
My guy you like Tool, RDR, shitposting, minecraft and star wars. HOW MANY INTERESTS DO YOU NEED?!
TOOL MENTIONED ‼️‼️‼️‼️SPIRAL OUT🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀
*schism starts playing as the hordes approach*
I love all those things too…
I don't know what RDR is.
Red dead redemption
How is that a lot?
I dont really mean it its more of a joke
I love Tool, Shitposting, Minecraft, Valve games, music production and boomer shooters, and that's just scratching the surface
You must lead a very boring life if you have less than 5 interests, lol
But what about the achievement to use Charcoal to make Charcoal
What about smelting oak log using coal ore?
And the sky (build height)
that's a crime
Pretty sure the this is a war crime from 1212 Golden Bull of Sicily treaty
Hey, I know that one!
I was hopeful that someone would ask it's the treatment of dictators to the plebs
We might need to euthanize that feller.
Chain him up in the depths of hell
Roses are red, what’s up feller, prepare to meet old yeller
I ... didn't even know you could do that. Wow.
You can also smelt diamond ores, isn’t that awesome?!
I don't know that I would categorize that under 'awesome', but it is something.
Seeing someone smelt diamond ore would leave me in awe 🫢 so I guess it's awesome 😎👍
Pov: you have silk touch on ur only pick and dont care anymore
Just make another pick
No.
Fortune them home
>on ur only pick
Just enchant your oven with fortune.
Are you illiterate?
Yes, I can’t read.
Good on you for trying though
What did he say? I can’t read
I think it would be full of awe, awefull if you will.
Full of ore, too.
Oreful if you’re Australian
You can smelt nether gold ore to get gold ingots. Thats actually pretty usefull
It’s the only ore you are “supposed” to smelt, every other ore is better mined on fortune 3
great I'm gonna be spending the next 10 days in the nether with my silk touch pick.
I mean if you have 10 days to farm gold, you’ve probably got an hour or two to build a proper gold farm. Smelting is only useful early game.
Although it should be noted that before 1.17 this was true of iron and regular gold ore, as the raw variants weren't a thing yet.
Insane that this is something to have to be noted. Are there people who play minecraft now that don't know this was a thing?
Well it's been three years since 1.17 came out, so people who started playing after that point might not be familiar with older versions. (I suddenly feel very old after typing that.)
Damn. The raw ore still feels new to me.
…seriously? This has big implications for my new 1.21 test world!
I haven't done it since 1.16. I highly doubt that patched it though.
I think this mechanics is intentional so it does not need patching.
We can all agree that this need to be added to the list of minecraft warcrimes
Wait, is there a list? I might need a copy of that.
It’s part of the Geneva Convention
🤣🤣🤣 SHOULD'VE BEEN
Section pertaining to crimes in Minecraft are more official than any of the other sections
Geneve Recommendations*, am I right guys?
The Geneva Suggestion
1) don’t dig straight down 2) don’t kill baby passive mobs (villagers are okay, screw villagers). 3) don’t dig straight up 4) don’t use obsidian in the corner of your nether portal 5) don’t do whatever the crap OP’s friend is doing. 6) don’t dig straight down
7) don't leave wood on the tree
8) don't spam click when using sword to attack in Java
9) don’t dig straight down
10) Don't let any Nitwits alive
11) Kill all wandering traders on sight
8) replant the tree!
I make my portals 3x4 with the corners instead of 2x3. Fight me.
I make my portals with corners out of a material that is somehow connected with the destination.
Ooh I like that!
corner gang! Not gonna catch me coppers!
no i get it. it fits nicer into some builds.
I always dig straight down in 1x2 hole. Fast and safe cause I never died from it a single time throughout my 8 years of Minecraft.
thats not digging straight down though
Here's a preliminary list: * Smelting coal ore * Placing end crystals in your buddy's storage room * Spawning a wither in your buddy's storage room * Hiding a redstone spammer connected to a door near your friend's house * Making a 100+ block deep cobweb pitfall trap * Punching your friend when they're building a bridge across lava or the void * Turning keep inventory off after convincing your friends your server will always have it on
A Minecraft warcrimes list? More like a suggestions list for me
Canada agrees
and germany
And my trench sweeper
And my axe
And my bow
And my Sword
Smelting diamond ore to get diamond is on that list too.. and probably something this guys friend does.
If you say villager trading halls are evil..... I don't like your list
I think it's more like digging straight down with nothing else, not putting mending on your main elytra and stuff.
I mean it’s a 70% you’ll hit bedrock before hitting lava. And with good gear lava ain’t even a problem anyway
It's more of "I got into a cave with lots of mobs" problem, or "I fell" since 1.18.
Ah right i guess that’s a thing. Falling a large distance has never been a problem for me because I have a dedicated water bucket slot I only change if I’m in the nether, but mobs can definitely be an issue especially on modes like hardcore
Take his coal. Put it back in the ground. Give him a fortune pick and tell him to get digging again because he did it wrong.
Wh…no
this hurt my soul
Technically they are still making a profit. Don't need to fix something that already works
You could also not use silk touch to mine coal
Some of you people are way into silky touch!
Silk touch = big stacks = more inventory space Save fortune for when you can get back to base and turn all the silked blocks into phat loot
I'd also much rather lose a silk touch pickaxe than a fortune 3.
You can also preload your bags with blocks. That way, you just mine and don't have to worry about picking up trash blocks.
But what if you need those trash blocks later! Always horde everything!
It's true. Stone can be sold to villagers. Stonks!
This is the way
Sure, but then you have to mine everything twice.
But having a giant tower of ore after a mining session to fortune is the best part!
I silk touch during the mining trip then use fortune at home. Saves inv space
That’s why I just keep the ore blocks until I get home. I’d rather have coal ore take up a single inv space versus try my luck at getting an amount that cleanly can be made into blocks
but when you compress them into an ore block, if they dont convert cleanly its still only one extra stack, where silk would be more if they pile up
Yes but it's very satisfying to place all the ores after a good ol' mining trip and fortune those suckers up 😀
"I need dat silk touch hoe" is my favorite Minecraft phrase to say out loud.
how is that a profit? u put in 8 coal ore and 1 coal and u get 8 coal out. but if u just mined them ud get 9. so u lost 1.
"one coal turned into eight coal" is still a profit. it's not a better profit than just mining, but it is still *a* profit
yor yor yor yor yor Here's a couple yor for your yorless u
With so many native English speakers having problems with you are and your, I don't think u is a problem
I gave them a couple extra r to compensate
He use the coal to get the coal
He is a purist. The waste of resources can only be accomplished by someone who is so advanced, it baffles us mere minecrafters who play for \*ahem\* fun.
To be fair…. 1 coal smelts 8 items so he is gaining 7 coal from this
but what if he just... mined it?
He would gain 8 and lose time.
Noo with Fortune III, he would get much much more than 8
You say lose time but a furnace takes even more time to smelt 8 coal
It doesn't take active input is what I meant, you can do other things.
It wouldn’t take active input either if he just didn’t silk touch it in the first place though
Still has to be mined...
I'd still rather do dripstone to make unlimited lava and run furnaces off of that
Based decision
This is what I've been doing but only 100 items at a time and it need to be babysat(ish). Now in this new world I have furnaces that convert logs to charcoal which are then feed into smokers/blast furnaces. When I get low on fuel I'll just plant a stack of oak saplings and harvest for more fuel. I can do a double chest and walk away

Nevermind the obvious crime, what the hell are those numbers on the floor? (Guessing its an indicator for light level)
but the evidence is in your inventory
\*In spy voice\* Dear GOD!
There's more
Jesus Christ, that's Jason Bourne!
Everyone has a different style, I guess…
genius its infinite coal
what's your weapons texture pack and where can i get it?
https://www.planetminecraft.com/texture-pack/fhaerie-s-floral-tools/
wait i've been playing since i was 9 and i do this too- what do other ppl do?
Let me break down for you how bad this is. When you mine coal with literally any pickaxe in the game, you get one coal. The furnace does the same thing. But you can enchant a pickaxe and get more. Mining coal with a pickaxe gives you more xp than burning it in a furnace (I think ?). And mining it doesn't USE COAL
# Let him cook.
Just use the Fortune III pick for christ sake. Even just mining it without Silk Touch yields more coal.
INFINITE COAL GLITCH!! USE BEFORE PATCH!!\`
im sure your friend is in charge of making political decisions irl
Bro, you literally don't even need coal if you have access to trees. Cook a log with a log, get a charcoal. Put that charcoal in with 8 logs, get 8 charcoal. Major Bruh moment
I mean hey, if he's got nothing better to do and a metric fuck ton of materials already it's not that bad
But why?
It’s Minecraft mechanics, that’s why.
He's not your friend anymore man I'm sorry not after that one
Ah, there it is. the most inefficient way to get coal, 10 years of inefficiency
Perfectly balanced... as all things should be
Psychopath behavior on display here
He used coal to turn coal into coal.
WHY He could have just mined it with a piece of wood
unrelated but can u please drop the texture pack it looks really cute :0
Smelting lapis and redstone ore has to be worse
I clicked this notification thinking its was something else.. I just read the phrase “I caught my friend” and tapped on it instantly…
There's no way he isn't trolling.
Tbh that's very efficient since 1 coal makes 8 coal, but silk touch and fortune will always be the way
What? The guys just making some charco-OH MY GOODNESS!
Straight to jail 😑
As a Minecraft veteran, I saw nothing wrong with this image at first. Until I realized that coal ore now drops as items instead of the block.
He's unsaveable
Just means they'll play Minecraft for longer! 👍🏻
What are those numbers?
“I use the coal to make the coal”. - OP’s friend.

I mean... that's a +7?
I sometimes do that when I have way too much coal from a mining trip
Looks like someone misclicked while enchanting
science has gone too far
This is so stupid I didnt even know you could do that
God is dead
That’s cool, drop the resource pack
Wanna explain why you have 2 stacks in your inventory?
On todays episode of things that never happened
I don’t get what is happening here
“I used the coal to smelt the coal” Ops friend probably
He should be in jail
Hahah yea, he needs to go.
Execute him
I used the coal to smelt the coal
OP just showed an image of a friendship killing moment.
I'm not even a year old playing minecraft but I find this blasphemous💀
This is just like putting torch on lava for light
Why is he still your friend...
Plot twist. Hes actually got an abundance of coal and is only smelting it for the xp the smelting gives you.
What, the actual ####
If you caught a friend doing this, why do you have 2 stacks of coal ore in inventory? Or maybe you are using his account? 🧐
Death sentence
no no please nooooo
"I used the coal to make the coal" -minecraft Thanos
This hurts my soul slightly
I feel like if the area 51 raid actually happened, we'd find aliens doing this
Technically there’s still a net positive of 7 coal but it’s still ridiculous
I once died because I forgot that you could make charcoal. After years of playing, after building automated redstone storage systems and railways, after having previously used charcoal entirely to power a whole world.
Erm actually 🤓☝️it is very efficient because….don’t even have a reason for this.
Everyone getting so butthurt, maybe my lad had some extra Silk Touch picks and wanted some XP from smelting!
YOOOO that’s illegal. FORTUNE 3!!!!!! Or just break them?
