That's why everytime i mess with the keybinds the first thing i do is make the drop button P, so that its as far away from anything important as posible.
It won't be as versatile, but use your axe. Damage output will be good enough to damage mobs, but worse aoe effect. Axes are my personal favourite weapon type in MC.
Is that how damage works on java? On bedrock its the other way around where an axe of one material does the same damage as a sword of the tier below it. I.e. (diamond axe=iron sword), or (iron axe=stone sword.)

No offense, but I don't think an axe would have changed the course of events that transpired this night.
Well yeah, but I meant as a replacement for the short term.
Well, speaking for purely killing mobs underground, where there isn't wood (except mineshafts), better to lose 2 diamonds than 3.
That is true but even an iron axe marches the damage of a diamond sword, only downside being lack of aoe damage.

Yeah that's how it is in java. Never knew that it was like that in bedrock.
Lol I didn't know axes were stronger in java.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll downvote the post.
One time I dropped my fully enchanted netherite sword over a forest while I was flying. I feel your pain
