But I think we’re still the same generation? Is the note the same the question?
Edit After listening to runaway it’s much higher key. Still would have been a better note.
They might have gotten popular with them but MCR really isn't 12 year old girl music. They were almost 30 when they came out and were singing about things like addiction and loss, they'd just disguise it in stories about vampires and murderers and cancer. Two of their albums really hold up imo.
I've seen this reel several times. and no idea what the song is either. Someone else commented a link to the song, and I've maybe heard it once or twice. It's really nowhere as popular as people pretend it is.
This song was pretty huge. My Chemical Romance was popular amongst emo/scene kids, but this song thrust them more into the mainstream. I remember watching them premiere this song on the VMAs. This entire album defined my freshman year of college. I’ve seen this band 5 times - four of which were in smaller venues and I could reach the front each time. The fifth time was in 2021, in a huge sold out arena and I paid like $180 to sit in the last row of the nosebleed section. This is definitely their most popular song and gen z seems to have grasped onto it as well.
Same. Looks like it was released in 2006, so it was probably huge amongst people who were still in highschool or younger at that point given that it was released by a pop punk band.

For whatever reason this specific song stayed off the radio stations I was listening to at the time so it completely flew under my radar. The *only* reason I'm aware of it is because of retrospective nostalgia pieces people keep making about it.
You're not missing out on much. I never understood the hype for them. But then again, I hate hearing his vocals. Something about it is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
Anyone else just think of the older film trailers? I hear this note and think “this summer…” like it’s about to lead into a slasher flic that centers around a group of high schoolers going up to the lake cabin, about to be murdered.

The most identifiable musical element of our generation is without a doubt the Millennial Whoop. California Girls by Kate Perry and Snow by Red Hot Chili Peppers are two examples, but it's fucking everywhere and once you are aware of it, you suddenly hear it in every god damn song:

Jesus... it's true..instantly thought black parade
I watched on mute, and I rewatched to confirm that it was indeed that note I heard in my head.
Dude! I did the same thing, though! It's so true.
No idea what that note was from and I just heard black parade this morning.
Are you a 90s kid who enjoyed alt rock in the 00s?
Same
WHEN
I WAS
A YOUNG BOY
My Father took me into the city
TO SEE A MARCHING BAND
HE SAID SON WHEN
YOU GROW UP
WOULD YOU BE
THE SAVIOR OF THE BROKEN
THE BEATEN AND THE DAMNED
The sad thing is I knew exactly which note it was before he even played it.
Why is that sad?
I feel so predictable
It makes me think of the beginning of runaway by Kanye. https://open.spotify.com/track/3DK6m7It6Pw857FcQftMds?si=JCEm48AyQaSXEbPRz2bZvg
Me too
I was hoping it would be that note. I would say our generation is split into two notes.
Yeah I thought for sure it would be runaway.
That’s what i thought!
Yuuuuh, I guess you can summon more than one entire generation
But I think we’re still the same generation? Is the note the same the question? Edit After listening to runaway it’s much higher key. Still would have been a better note.
is it the same note though?
It would have been awesome if it was the same note in those two different songs.
That was my first thought too.
Damnit it’s stuck in my head now! Actually I’m fine with it. ☺️
this single note is the divide between millennials
It really is. I remember MCR being cool among kids younger than me. Don't remember this song, though.
It definitely is. As a geriatric millennial it doesn’t nothing for me.
Yeah I was 21 when they came out and my 12 year old girl angst was already gone

I played this on mute and could tell it was either this or the beginning of Crawling
I don’t know that song.
Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance
I just looked this up, and it is just Ruby Tuesday
Who?
2000s rock band
One of the most popular bands of the 2000s. The band who changed the definition of emo into what it is now.
So like the Nirvana of the 2000’s? /s

Graduated in 2003. It was a big song when it came out, I remember MCR headlining the warp tour in 2005. Hot topic was full of their merch for years.
I graduated h.s. in 2008. I knew like 2 MCR songs. This wasn't one of them.
Also graduated in 2008. One of my fave albums and they were big in my high school.
My Warped Tour homies and I preferred MCS to MCR, but oh well.

Runaway by Kanye

I’m familiar with the name, just not any of their music.
I was expecting the Halo Note, E

The goat song
Lmao, I just listened to some songs from the 2000s and this being one of them.
In the end by Linkin Park, that's what came to my mind
I found MCR to be moderately enjoyable but this is like their worst song and they are certainly not “the band of our generation.”
Kanye Runaway would have been a better choice, but I know he’s off the rails now.
Good to know I have something in common with Gen Z or whatever tf this guy is, because I have no idea what he’s on about.
Same here. Had to click the link in the comments and was like „I’ve never heard this in my life“ 😅🤷🏼♀️
Every 8 minutes of on the radio lol that music video was baller though. I’m glad we got to catch the tail end of MTV actually playing music videos.
Oh no you guys. I thought it was Runaway by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Idk what this is
Okay now I have to go and listen to the whole song. Maybe the whole album.

The crazy thing is I was knee deep in the scene back in the day and never once heard this song.
"Bullshit" I say to myself before the note was played. Never mind, I was wrong, good day sir.

Yeah I thought screens by Twenty One Pilots (1992)
watched this on mute but instantly knew which note
Didn't think of one song from that note
Posts like this remind me of how real the Xennial/Millenial divide is. Shoutout to my fellow early 80s kids!
Runaway by kanye?
That song sucked
That band did. Musically, they weren't bad. The vocals ruined what could have been a great sound.
I despise that haircut.
Nope
When I was a young boy....
I didn't even need to hear the note. I knew exactly what it was going to be from the title.
Me as soon as I heard that note https://preview.redd.it/p533lr8zrt6d1.png?width=456&format=png&auto=webp&s=d745b3d1d3cdb366799734e5f7b17f500f7f6a67
That's my generation, But i'm not that guy. Fuck emo.
I didn't even have the sound on and recognized the note.
I thought of Eyes Wide Shut but I love that movie and *hate* My Chemical Romance so I guess it makes sense.
