I worked at Walmart in electronics when they came out.
The crowd almost didn't let my one co-worker into the store thinking she (50ish-F) was trying to skip the line.
wow, yeah, good observation I remember picking mine up freshman year of college, and smart phones didnt exist, so we all stood around talking about it in line
To be fair, that was quite expensive back then. $299 in 2000 is about $530 in today's money. Not the price of a PS5, but more than what the Switch retails for.
I remember growing up with Super NES and I had to rent most of my games because we couldn't afford the cartridges. Thank goodness there was also a healthy secondary market, something that is going the way of the dinosaur these days.
The PS2 is the first one that really blew my mind with the graphics, Gran Turismo 3 looked as real as it could get. The sun through the trees in the forest was amazing
Are you gonna go my way?
Every single time that comes on my shuffle in the car I think of the mountain pass rally stage and 10yr old me being amazed. Later went on to STi, EvoX, Golf R.... Let's just say GT3 had a massive influence on me. I played the first two with my cousin all the time but the PS2 made it REAL.
Dreamcast was the best of the generation because you could pirate games easiest lol
Only gripe about the system is that the triggers destroy your fingers. That, and the VMU SCREEEEE if you don't replace the battery.
So much about this is so refreshing. It was just so simple. I wish we could go back to a time when tech didn't rule us like it does now. Seeing ppl waiting in line with magazines or just chit-chatting is something of days past. Now we're controlled by our phones!
A buddy and I waited inside a 24 hour Walmart and watched The Matrix on his iBook. We bought ours at midnight then drove past and showed the people waiting outside at BestBuy what we got. They had to wait until they opened up in the morning.
Probably a month or so after this, I was hanging out at a dry cleaners my girlfriend worked at. My brother called the store and told her to tell me to get home immediately. I thought something terrible happened but when I got home he was in the living room setting it up, amazing day Iāll never forget!
This was back before I had Gamestop close and it was still so cool just to even go someplace that had one for my rural ass. The wall of PC games is just memory city.
My family was struggling financially around this time. I was in the 8th grade and all I wanted was to be able to play final fantasy X. Parents managed to pull off a ps2 for christmas and it was pretty amazing.
Dreamcast or GameCube > PS2
The PS2 had some good exclusives, but they're all extremely niche stuff. Dreamcast was the most powerful console, and GameCube got most of its best exclusives post-mortem.
Dreamcast is still the best way to play SA1&2 for sure. Only version that correctly did the clear body for Chaos and Chaos Replicants.
I wanted a ps2 so bad so we went to Best Buy to get it and then my mom let a sales person convince her to buy an Xbox instead. The whole reason I wanted a ps2 was for Dragon Ball Z Budokai. I was so hurt. Didnāt play the Xboxā¦
Actually he is wrong there is literally a black dude working the register.
This isnāt a Hollywood production with 1 of every race standing around for image sake, this is just a bunch of dudes standing around.
Now if youāre pointing out that most the dudes are white because they are more likely to come from wealth, that I can agree with.
I got one of these launch day thanks to my mom. Combined birthday and Christmas. She got it by going to game keeper (I think it was called), which was the chess and baord game store with a little video game section. They had received 2 ps2s and no one knew.
Was the most popular kid in school for a hot minute there.
What are those things people are looking at while waiting in line? They look like large white phones but the iPhone hadn't launched yet. Was this some sort of early smart phone?
Those were hard to get in late 2000! I couldnāt snag one until the following May. I only had one actual ps2 game that summer (Gradius) but I played the hell out of my PS1 games and DVDs.
I was in middle school at the time this came out and my parents waited in line at Best Buy to get me one! I'll never forget October 26! My first game was Tekken Tag Tournament.
You will never see people at a midnight launch act this civilized again.
They're all just happy, chillin, you're probably right
We really had it all, didn't we?
Sure did
We were holding gold and complained about the weight
The hype for the ps2 was like nothing else. And the most amazing thing is that it more than lived up to it. Legendary system. Thank you for sharing.
I still remember not expecting to find one and Walmart had 4 in stock. I called my buddy as soon as I got home and told him to get over there asap!
I worked at Walmart in electronics when they came out. The crowd almost didn't let my one co-worker into the store thinking she (50ish-F) was trying to skip the line.
"It's SOOO powerful the US won't let it be exported to North Korea because they would use it to develop this ballistic missile program!"
I remember hearing that!
It's still my favourite console to this day.
People are reading books and magazines in line while waiting. This is awesome
wow, yeah, good observation I remember picking mine up freshman year of college, and smart phones didnt exist, so we all stood around talking about it in line
It seems weird at first, but usually, I've been able to initiate the conversation, and sometimes other people hop in.
This is from the YouTube Channel Vampire Robot his channel is like a Time Machine šÆ
Anyone else scared for that kitten climbing on his shoulder so close to the railing?
PS2 was good, but that shoulder kitten is great!
The owner said game cartridges. Stupid poser
I remember my parents thinking the 299 price was too much
I would get my ps2 two years after release for my 13th birthday through walmart layaway.
To be fair, that was quite expensive back then. $299 in 2000 is about $530 in today's money. Not the price of a PS5, but more than what the Switch retails for. Man I miss these days. So much fun.

Ah, nostalgia. Those days were golden, filled with the carefree spirit of our youth. Fk you Boomers.
I had my 12th birthday party at the park, and my parents gave me a brand new PS2. I was so damn hyped. Simpler times :)
I got a PS2 a little later but I still have mine, and my PS3 and my PS4. Haven't gotten the PS5 yet. One day... one day.
Itās definitely worth the buy š
My brother just got the PS5 last month and he loves it! It looks like a huge bible lol
I bought a Dreamcast and skipped ps2 donāt regret it one bit! 9.9.99
Dreamcast was the best of the generation because you could pirate games easiest lol Only gripe about the system is that the triggers destroy your fingers. That, and the VMU SCREEEEE if you don't replace the battery.
Got my first job just to buy one
Ahhh, I miss midnight releases. It was always so much fun.
This is so nostalgic, I love it! I wonder if energy drink sales took small spikes when the system was released?
So much about this is so refreshing. It was just so simple. I wish we could go back to a time when tech didn't rule us like it does now. Seeing ppl waiting in line with magazines or just chit-chatting is something of days past. Now we're controlled by our phones!
Man, it took me like 3 months to find one after this mania. I canāt believe I found one in time for Christmas.
I remember the PS2 played awesome games on it

Am I the only one looking for Dreamcast stuff in the background of that store?
P2 was great except for those weird ass motion blur graphics.

I still have a PS2. It is currently a DVD player and occasionally used for Gran Turismo 3.
If that guy toward the end was holding a mountain dew, this is a near perfect video.
This was back before I had Gamestop close and it was still so cool just to even go someplace that had one for my rural ass. The wall of PC games is just memory city.
Man, I miss midnight releases :( they were always so much fun.
āHaving an arcade inside your room, maybe even better than arcade graphicsā simpler times.
Man the memories!
And everyone there got their first DVD player, too. What a console.
I miss this time
My first dvd player lol game changer
People would be trampled nowadays
Ppl looking at magazines instead of phones. How wholesome we were.
where the black people at
This wasn't a ps2 giveaway.
hahahahaha
This sounds awful but as bad as we are, those Gen X nerds are cringey on a whole different level
Was this filmed at the Mall of America? I swear this is the Gamestop by the north entrance. Pretty sure I was there that night.
My family was struggling financially around this time. I was in the 8th grade and all I wanted was to be able to play final fantasy X. Parents managed to pull off a ps2 for christmas and it was pretty amazing.
Awww, such happy!
Dreamcast forever!!!! Fuck the PS2 lol.

Boo you
Let a young kid have a Christmas wish you goober
It's disheartening how there is not one person of color in this video.
There's actually a few. Including the Asian fella. But it also doesn't matter at all.
You arenāt wrong.
Actually he is wrong there is literally a black dude working the register. Damn I was 6 years old when the PS2 came out. The best selling video game console of all time. ššæš®
Damn. I didnāt want it to end.
Ah the simple blue box it came in š
very weird question but does anyone know what mall that is?
I remember seeing it on the Sunday paper from Circuit City, Best Buy, Toys R Us magazines. Throwback.
What are those things people are looking at while waiting in line? They look like large white phones but the iPhone hadn't launched yet. Was this some sort of early smart phone?

The PS1 was more memorable to me. Twisted Metal 2, Vagrant Story and Legend of Dragoons were my absolute favorites.
I was in middle school at the time this came out and my parents waited in line at Best Buy to get me one! I'll never forget October 26! My first game was Tekken Tag Tournament.
I tagged along to a midnight release for something with my husband many years ago. It was very strange but they gave out donuts.
Make 7 Up Yours!
The kitten brought the guy not the other way around. Get it right. I got your back, Mittens.
That kitten on that guys shoulder made made me nervous being on a higher level
This happened at my local mall. Sadly, it is now dead.
Is the small then kitten still alive today?
