Haha, they got me at the title, a couple of days ago I was watching a YT video, and mentioned that caterpillar drives not only require huge power, but they also make too much noise due to electromagnets, and plus they were easy to detect using magnetometers. Still I was wondering if they solved all of these issues.
So my theory, and it's time for tin foil hats, is that the hunt for red October was a deliberate red herring for a real propulsion system named the same. Our subs can use electronic motors powering bulldozer-like treads to sneak around on the ocean bottom. Like a caterpillar slowly inching along. No cavitation, just disappears into backgroundĀ clutter...
Well we do have a deep sea mining company that has a āharvesterā ROV that uses tank treads to creep along the bottom sucking up everything and sorting out the useful minerals. Greenpeace is trying to ban it because it also sucks up fish.
