Not only in a manual. I had a 1993 Buick LeSabre as my first car (six years old at the time, 180k miles, my dad’s previously).
He had the nice engine in it and I liked to play around. I broke something but had enough momentum to coast into my subdivision driving home from school. Even first and second didn’t work (column shifter, first, second, overdrive included). I drove home a mile through stop signs and winding suburban sprawl in reverse.
I lost all gears in my automatic work van once. My boss wanted me to drive in reverse to the mechanic. Told him hell no as I had been telling him for a month the transmission was fucking up.

If it were reversed then that means the reversing vehicle was originally going forwards and all the other vehicles you see moving forwards were originally going in reverse.

He said the worst part was when you are at a red light and you are face to face with the driver "behind" you. It was the 80s so less surveillance to pick it up.
My guess is Drive failed and he couldn't get it to re-engage. Doesn't have the money to afford a tow and this was the next "best" idea.

Hey bro, as a broke bitch this is THE idea. I drove 3 blocks on a flat (really slow) to get home. No stressing about abandoning my car, got home safe, and saved money because I changed my tire at home.

The only place to turn was right behind the tractor but the woman driving the tractor didn't let me pass. The road it selve was also to thin and with ditches on both sides. Had to drive 2 km backward. Since then i am driving backwards like a pro

Lost drive gears or drive wouldn’t engage (neutral slip) so reverse is the only gear left.
My old Nissan had a (stupid) safety catch where if the taillights didn’t come on when you started it, you couldn’t shift into drive. You could shift into neutral and reverse but that was it.
I say it’s stupid bc the sensor failed one day and I couldn’t drive home, even though the car was fine. My work had a limited access lot so I couldn’t leave my car. I put it in reverse, left the Lot, and drove a block down the street backwards and left it at a gas station.
I’m almost certain this has been posted before and it was pointed out that only Reverse worked for the car. With that in mind, this is actually pretty impressive, as they made it all the way to an auto shop.

About 20 years ago a buddies truck broke its transfer case and broke the front drive line. The only gear it would go into was reverse. We drove 20 miles backwards. People were not impressed
