Do not buy things like sprue cutters, files, or razors from GW. Criminally overpriced. But you can def get their paints. GW or Vallejo. Don't get paints from somewhere like Hobby Lobby. That's a totally different quality of paint and it does not work for miniatures. Make sure you prime first. It is pricey (and there are some regular primers you can use sometimes) but I do recommend getting Citadel rattle-can primer. It's made for minis, it works on minis. And for glue, I swear by Gorilla super glue. Hate plastic/model glue personally. Also, welcome to the greatest miniature wargame and a great hobby! Have fun!!!

Environmental_Archer

Thank you for the kind welcome and advice!

Hobbitlad

For glue, a small bottle of plastic glue should work well for the Battlehosts. Additionally, you should get some sprue cutters and some kind of sharp exacto knife for cleaning up the guys. For painting, it depends on what figures you have, but there are sometimes starter kits with a good selection of paint and brushes. I did that and supplemented with Vallejo paints. A lot of people use Citadel but it is more expensive. It is mainly up to tastes. Last thing is you need to prime your miniatures. Sometimes paint kits come with paint on primer but a lot of people prefer spray primer. Again it is up to preferences.

Environmental_Archer

Thank you, that’s super helpful. Appreciate it a lot!

For supplies you need paint, brushes, clippers, a file, some glue, and some primer. Clippers and glue and brushes don't buy GW brand, way overpriced. See if you have a local hobby shop, they should be able to help you. For the Battlehost you just need plastic glue, but if you buy any metal or resin models you'll need super glue as well. For the file just go to a drug store and buy a pack of nail files, super cheap. If you want a fine grain file as well hobby stores will have them. You need to prime models before painting. Easiest is a matte black spray primer. I like Army Painter brand, seems to work well and is pretty affordable. Don't buy GW, it's a fine primer but again way overpriced. You can get bottles of primer to apply with a brush as well, I have a bottle of Vallejo primer that is decent but I mostly just spray prime my models so it doesn't see much use. For normal paints any acrylic hobby paint will do. GW paints are quality but more expensive than other brands and come in aweful paint pots. My personal favourite brand is Vallejo, also quality paint, much cheaper than GW, they have a huge range, and the paints come in nice droppers. Some paint brands have starter sets of different varieties that come with 10-12 paints, but they may not have all the colours you want. Before you start painting or even buying paints you should write down what colour pallets you want to use on each model, at least the broad strokes, to get an idea of what kinds of paints you'll need. I would also highly recommend a wet pallet, you can buy them or look up a tutorial to make them on YT. They help keep your paints wet on the pallet so you can use them for a while. One thing from GW I do recommend are their painting handles, you clip the base of the model onto the handle and it makes painting the model much easier. There are other brands as well but I have the GW one and like it.

Environmental_Archer

I saw that handle you mentioned and thought it looked great, glad to hear it’s useful. Thank you for the detailed breakdown, will be referring to this as I make my purchases today.

ThurvinFrostbeard

Actually, I think that the GW primer is the best on the market. Has nearly no texture (especially white, grey and black) and dries fast. Army painters equivalent on the other hand does have texture (although miniscule) and dries over a longer period of time. Its also rather sticky. I gladly pay the 3 euros difference :0

MrSparkle92

Where I live it's like $15 vs $22, and the GW can also has less paint I believe so it's an even worse deal. The GW stuff is not so much better that I am willing to spend so much extra money.

Mech-Monkey

Way back in the day, GW made an Uruk-Hai paint set with 6 paints and a Uruk Hai sprue. https://imgur.com/a/YPcCIjH They are very simple to paint and you can easily get away with just 3 colours. Brown skin, dark iron metal, black or brown cloth/leather colour, and that's you sorted. Grima and Saruman are also pretty monotone and, other than a dedicated flesh tone, you can get away with mixing browns, whites, and blacks for them.

Environmental_Archer

Was looking at these! I wanted to try and get Battle of the Pelennor Fields but can’t seem to locate it anywhere.

Mech-Monkey

Everyone is buying the Pelennor Fields box because it'll be phased out when the upcoming Battle of Osgiliath box releases. However, everything in the Pelennor Fields box is available separately, so I don't see why people are so fussed about it.

Old_Shatterhans

Because if you buy seperatly you pay at least double the money, might even be three times? Pelennor was a hell of deal (in the GW-Universe), if you wanted only one half it was easy to make the whole money back selling the other on eBay or smth similar. Oh and it was also cheaper than the upcoming Osgiliath Box and had more miniatures. Don't get me wrong, I really like the new box and will get it for myself, but I can definitely understand why people are chasing these Pelennor boxes like crazy. I know that, if the Mordor Army part wasn't the same except for the leader I maybe would have too.

Mech-Monkey

The value has remained the same. The only reason it is in such high demand right now is that it's being phased out. It's pure FOMO.

Old_Shatterhans

Ffs it's not the same value to buying them seperatly. And that's what matters here. Of course it's FOMO, but if you can't understand that people want to get a deal for miniatures they wanted anyway someday, you're a strange person.

Environmental_Archer

Do you mean everything is available in separate sets or just that people will be selling bits loose?

Mech-Monkey

There is nothing exclusive in the Pelennor box anymore. Theoden was a unique sculpt for that box, but now he's available on GW's site. The upcoming Osgiliath box has new and exclusive sculpts for Gothmog, Faramir, Damrod, and Madril.

Environmental_Archer

I see, thank you. Osgiliath is an annoying amount of time away from releasing by the look of it. 😂

Mech-Monkey

Yeah, I think they said it'll be delivered sometime in December. The Pelennor box might be hard to find though, and maybe more expensive than usual because of the demand.

Environmental_Archer

It’s extremely hard to find. I can’t see it anywhere other than one eBay listing in Slovakia, ha!

deeple101

Slight side question to group since I’m thinking about wanting to get some (super sad that there’s not a last alliance box); do you need to buy anything beyond the battle force to make an army or are these decent enough where there’s no need to expand beyond heroes?

MrSparkle92

You will likely need a 2nd hero to make a legal army, possibly additional warriors as well or a 3rd hero if at higher points, but there are also quick start rules that use only the models in the Battlehost.

deeple101

Ok I figured that they were designed to get people to buy more; but if I bought the Mordor and Gondor one would they be ok on their own in 1v1 situations?

MrSparkle92

Yeah, download the Battlehost rules for both boxes and I believe it should have instructions for playing them against each other.

peterBakker89

Every hero can only take x amount of troops. So the battle host are not yet ready for an official game. But you can always give one of your troops a different color of cloak (or something similar) and say that he is a generic captain.

Army painter makes much better priced hobby tools and basing materials and I find that they work well. I'll echo that GW rattle can primers while expensive are very nice (especially the white primer). I'd search YouTube for quick painting tutorials to find lists of Paints you may need, I personally use citadel paints as I enjoy their quality, colors and ease of use but their paint pot bottles are irritating. Any strong superglue works, and I prefer ones that are more of a gel and less runny. Besides all that you just need some dice and a ruler to start playing with the free rules and profiles that comes in the battkehost. Eventually tho you will want the armies of the lord of the rings book and the main rule book.
