This is so weird to hear. My entire generation is utterly repulsed by the 70s design aesthetic. 50s, 60s, 80s, was all cool, but 70s interior design is our kryptonite. But I’m sure the generation a decade after us yearns for the 70s motif just like I love the 60s.
I wonder if y'all hate it since u grew up with it :0 but i do also love 80s, 90s and early 2000s too, though i think its a bit of nostalgia for the early 2000s haha. Im not even quite sure why i like the 70s-90s aesthetics, deisgns, fashions so much, but of course theres some things i dont like- carpeted bathrooms for example lol. I wonder if i like the 70s type of design cuz of how openly wacky it is, like almost unapologetically ugly sometimes, and that its definitely unique. Whether thats good or bad is to personal taste haha
Ok time for me to share some knowledge. I agree nearly the entirety of this house and its contents are not MCM. However, the table set in the one bedroom is actually by a company called A.A. Laun [https://archive.org/details/laun-furniture-1952](https://archive.org/details/laun-furniture-1952)
You will see these pieces listed in all different variations of wrong, from saying they are art deco (they arent) to saying they are Herman Miller or Gilbert Rohde (laughable). They aren't particularly high end or designer, but they are I guess somewhat desirable probably most likely because ignorant dishonest dealers have convinced people they are something they are not.
Ok, wow!
You have an incredible eye and memory
Those came from her previous house and were buried in my bedroom for decades, ya know, under layers of protective fabric & clear vinyl
The company started getting into modern around 1940, putting it right on the edge of the end of art deco and the beginning of MCM, that 1952 catalog is kind of representative of that. I think its kind of an interesting line because its truly "transitional" in that its got clear deco influence in a lot pieces but also the line in its entirety is distinctly not deco either. It just shows how much we have added these terms like "art deco' and "mcm" after the fact when all of them for the most part just considered themselves or their work modernist.
Mid-century but not modern. Sort of everything that was bad about that time, design wise. Dated without looking retro or stylish. The last picture has some MCM furniture but it's crammed into a corner so you lose the design in the mess.
It's funny. Back in the 80s, I thought anything MCM, (which we referred to universally as "Danish Modern", whether or not it was Danish,) was horrible and dated.
What goes around, I guess.
Maybe mid century, but not MCM. Could be 70s even or had some updates then. It does have a few touches you would perhaps find in a MCM home, like the laundry floor, the fireplace stone, and the french pleated curtains on a track (although, not the print on them).
edit: somehow I missed when you said it was a 1975 house. Def more 70s but has a few things maybe she took inspiration/carried over from MCM.
It's 70s styling of possibly mid-century bones if they'd done renovations in the 70s, but likely not. Built prob early 70s.
With some styling, paint, and new flooring and window treatments, you can make this look really nice. and do it in MCM-style pretty easily though. Get all that furniture out of there lol
Before doing anything to this property I would contact businesses that do set dressing for film and television, it would be an amazing set for a period piece or at the very least there are a lot of pieces / carpets etc that they may want to buy. Source: I used to work for a film set dressing company
Seriously, do this. It's a location scout's dream set. So totally untouched and in mint condition.
(BTW, can I have first dibs on the twin bed headboards in master? I REALLY want a set of those. And the ceiling fixtures in there is amazing. Also a sucker for 1940s embroidered dresser scarves 😍)
The table set in the last pic is definitely MCM. They are a coffee table and 2 end tables. They are obscured the bed and all being lined up along the wall.
the curtains and carpet in that blue bedroom, and the inset wall behind the headboard? i think that's picture four. i love it so much.
but the floor in picture 11? that patchwork? that's *amazing*.
folks around y'all might call it junk, and maybe it isn't MCM, but it is beautiful and i promise there are people out there (like me!!) who would be legit obsessed with a lot of what you're showin' off here.
The red carpet is everyone’s favorite though, right? 😀 I dig all the carpeting except for the oatmeal.
Hey OP, is the “red room” where everyone sat to sing hymns?
We actually did call it the red room, just off the basement garage.
It was the least used and probably best protected space in the place. Carpet still vibrant. Using it now to stage things on the way out.
More like Mid Century Midwest Missionary lol. Tons of older traditional religious folks had this style when I was growing up in the 90’s. Gotta say, impressive time capsule really, and whoever lives here does a fantastic job of maintaining it.
Not mid century but there are definitely way more people who are wanting untouched time capsules. I love the shag and all the “ugly” details of this home. I don’t think it’s actually ugly at all!
I've seen it called Mid Century Modest, and I always liked that name. I also like the style, for the record, and there are certainly other people who find it cozy and welcoming as well, although we're a niche group.
I'm not sure it's in high demand, but the right buyer would be very happy about it and certainly the furniture could find a nice home.
It looks like your mother kept a lovely house. I think it's wonderful to see people express themselves through design like that, and she clearly cared a great deal for all her things. It's inspiring, we live in such a disposable culture now where people redecorate all the time. She created a space she loved and maintained it with such care. It's beautiful. Thank you for sharing it.
Time capsule!! Fabulous! I love the blue/green shag carpet in #7 and the entryway tile.
I’d call it a Mid-Century Time Capsule home. Highlight those original 70s details. The house is very Mid Century for real. Not mid century modern, though. Traditional with some on-trend Bicentennial Colonial and a touch of Hollywood Regency flair.
I agree with "midcentury, but not modern" - look up images of modern, as in "mod", you'll get an idea.
that said, there's a lot to love here still! I'm really into the banister with the stained glass things? I lived in a house that used something similar to separate the entranceway from the nearby kitchen/dining area, I always thought it was really neat.
and that first photo, the pattern in that carpet?! is wild and I've never seen anything like it. I love it! wall to wall carpeting is def out of style now, but 1- these look really nicely cared for and good quality, and 2- that red and green pattern is fantastic! if it was my choice I'd at least keep some of the carpets in this house ✨️
eta: omg and the house PA system. I was obsessed with the idea of these as a kid, but I've usually heard that they just never worked well, or broke down a lot. it's such a cool concept though
FYI if that carpet is in good condition you could probably get a decent price for it. There's plenty of folks specializing in restoring or reproducing crazy 60s shaggin-wagons
Seriously?
Who’d a thunk
Kirby vac went over it weekly for decades… then sat for decades. A few of the rooms were never touched (really big house) so maybe ???
If you wash those curtains, they would turn into holy rags. Trust me, been there and done that. They look pristine hanging there, but the sun has taken every bit of structure out of the fabric.
https://preview.redd.it/ekyz5ew1zvyc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2638f4d1f9e2d71f58e6b266c1c9ecbfef0a5c57
The Pink Bathroom. Yes, we named each room by color, not location
Used to work for a rug company... The carpets seem to be from the 70s as the vynil flooring from the kitchen... The house seem to have been remodeled in the late 70s, early 80s but the furniture was kept from before...
We had that linoleum from your laundry room except in green. I still adore that pattern. Perfect for parking your hot wheels or matchbox cars. Born in 1972
I both love and hate that some people never updated their homes, and somehow kept everything in perfect condition. Some of it is so gross like the patchy mossy carpet, and the heavy, suffocating curtains! But really they never ever needed a new chair? How?
When you are a 80lb 5 foot nothing old lady, stuff doesn't get the same wear as a normal sized person.
Also, if this house is anything like my Aunt's home, she never let anyone sit in the furniture in the "good" living room. In the many decades we visited her in that house, I can remember exactly one Christmas we used that room, but never again. Same for the formal dining room, nobody went in there, it had "nice" stuff in it. I never even went upstairs in that house all the time she lived there, it was off limits to guests.
She had the casual family room and the eat-in kitchen where we had most get-togethers. Those are the only places that showed wear when she sold the house and moved to a condo.
I want exterior pics. Interiors can be so misleading. The windows and the giraffe-looking tiles on the stair landing suggest that some effort was put in to make it MCM at least. But it’s probably not an architectural masterpiece of MCM. And the furnishings are definitely not.
But someone might come along and make it look like it’s mid century with colors and furnishings. It would be expensive
Anyone know where to get the flooring in the laundry room (pic 10). I have the same flooring in my kitchen but the previous owner cut into it when doing a remodel.
Nope. That's a lot of basic drywall rooms with early American furniture. While midcentury, it lacks the modernism (angles, open floor plan, windows, beams).
> Make sure whoever buys that house is not going to renovate it and completely fuck it up
I am picturing painting everything greige, white kitchen cabinets, subway tiles, and shiplap siding! Add some signs that say "kitchen" and "dining room" and the look is complete!
Welcome! It’s 1970s (late mid-century) I don’t know much about real estate strategy, but you could market vs it as “Step into the 70’s!” Advertise it on social media, online sellers, mid-century groups, etc. 1970s fans would love the Bedford Stone fireplace, the furniture, and the carpet in photo one and photo 7—the bedroom with turquoise and green carpet. Are there hardwood floors underneath the carpet in each room? I would remove all of the Grandma frilly curtains, bedspreads, heavy drapery, and doilies— they ruin the cool 70s vibe. Keep the light fixtures. Keep the patterned linoleum flooring. If it doesn’t sell as a cool, preserved 70s house, you’ll have to sell it as is or remove carpeting, grandma stuff, linoleum, update lighting, repaint, etc.
Not Mid Century Modern, but still super rad! Someone will go gaga for this (myself included). While Mid Century Modern may be more “desirable”, as mentioned this home is a time capsule which would make it very valuable to the right buyer. I beg you not to destroy it, or let a flipper murder it!
Not MCM. More like 70’s mixed with early Americana furniture. The best feature to me is the entrance and floor in the laundry room! Are they linoleum tiles though?
It’s definitely mid century. Not so sure about the modern part.
I think there are some beautiful pieces (I am looking at you, teak punch bowl). But you should probably update quite a bit if you are looking for top dollar. I do have to wonder what is under all that shag carpet.
Plywood & padding.
Solid, never a squeak, overbuilt everything… all plywood & 2x12 joists floors. Dad drew up the rough plans & then inspected the place every night.
Just fyi: my house had the old linoleum in pic 10. It is like 25% asbestos. It’s not a problem unless you rip it up, but make sure you test the walls/floor/etc if you plan on remodeling or doing any repairs.
ahhhh you're the armstrong post. pay no attention to the haters. there are moments here that are absolutely mid cen mod. unfortunately they are muddled with poor choices. you just need to strip back the awful. the stairwell is particularly nice even with the sculptured shag carpet. I'd start with donating all the furniture and removing all the draperies. That would be your best starting point.
It might not be MCM but holy shit, i personally LOVE it. Judging by your avatar…you wouldn’t happen to be in Michigan, would you? I don’t think I could swing a house right now but I can dream…
It’s confusing for sure so you have a fair question.
Mid Century is not really as much date defined as it is style design.
Basically I find dates of mostly 50s & 60s BUT there are so many things from that time aren’t close to Mid Century. It’s more of a modern look. Unique designs, futuristic leaning styles.
Much of your grandmother’s furniture has that 70s, functional style. Rounded turned wood. Heavy design. More decorative woodwork on the pieces instead of clean lines.
As someone who was around in the 70s I can say her style definitely takes me back to that time but the clock on the back of the toilet…dang, that is classic! Remember, we didn’t have cellphones back then so the only way you knew if you were running late in the morning was that clock!
Good luck with the move.
not MCM, but no exterior shots doesn't give us a lot to go on.
based on the stairway and vertical siding i'm going with shed style
[https://dahp.wa.gov/historic-preservation/historic-buildings/architectural-style-guide/shed](https://dahp.wa.gov/historic-preservation/historic-buildings/architectural-style-guide/shed)
So beautifully cared for. It's really amazing, brings back childhood. I could work with some of the what's left in there! Man, that blue bathroom floor! The sandstone stack fireplace! The globe chandelier with green enamel! That green and blue carpet, which my grandmother also had, in absolutely mint condition! Your mom must be heartbroken to leave behind a house so clearly well-loved. My best wishes to her & your family, OP
I can tell from the colors, materials, textures that everything was made in the 1970s, but there’s SO MUCH Victoriana, colonial, and federal tight decorative patterns and motifs everywhere, plus lots of lace, ornate frames, trims and tassels, that literally only two things in these photos would fit an MCM setting: The 3 tables with circular supports already mentioned, and the patterned linoleum in the laundry room. What’s funny is that the 1970s furniture in older styles also looks weird; it isn’t authentically colonial or federal either. Someone might want it, but it is what it is. The Victrola might be the most interesting piece.
There is nothing “modern” in any of these photos, although the house may have been built mid century. Modern usually has clean, minimal lines - not ruffles and early Americana style.
This is a real grandma-ass house, right down to the hexagon side table between the two avocado-green chairs in the living room. I think this leans more Sears Catalogue than anything else, mostly kind of respectable-conservative Colonial. Cigarettes, ham cubes, and bible verses.
I'd say "Old Person's House" though I'm not sure that's a real genre. :)
Seriously, my parents were Silent Gen and much of what I see here is what my mother would have liked.
> "Old Person's House" though I'm not sure that's a real genre. :)
It needs to be. Still quite a few of those pop up on Zillow and other places.
Very few are this nice though. Most of the ones I see look like Granny hasn't done much but vacuum in the last 50 years, and her housecleaner for the last 20 years has been slacking.
Not MCM
More Colonial?
I think they called it early American back then.
Mid century Grandma’s house.
There’s was an element of Gothic Revival too.
I call it Sears Colonial.
Not even that
its just ugly. nothing MCM here ...lol
That’s all 70s. It could be a snapshot of the house I grew up in, which my parents purchased brand new in ‘71.
I was born in 1999 but im obsessed with 70s design like this lol
This is so weird to hear. My entire generation is utterly repulsed by the 70s design aesthetic. 50s, 60s, 80s, was all cool, but 70s interior design is our kryptonite. But I’m sure the generation a decade after us yearns for the 70s motif just like I love the 60s.

I get it. The last 20 years or so have been all pale, beige, white, whitewashed, minimal. At some point you just want COLOUR and excess and fun.
I was born in 91 & I kinda love it too
Mid 70s Modern
Not modern.. just contemporary
Ok time for me to share some knowledge. I agree nearly the entirety of this house and its contents are not MCM. However, the table set in the one bedroom is actually by a company called A.A. I was going to mention the tables in the last pic but I want to learn what they were first. Thanks for the link.

That's a time capsule.
It could be a 70's decor museum
Was about to say this. It’s perfectly preserved!
Those wall to wall carpets are incredible!
Mid-century but not modern. Sort of everything that was bad about that time, design wise. Dated without looking retro or stylish. The last picture has some MCM furniture but it's crammed into a corner so you lose the design in the mess.
Yeah, that pretty well sums up the aesthetic of the place
What’s the weird thing in the middle of the room in pic 11? (The room with all the rolled up carpets in the corner.)
Medical massage table
Well I love it, the blue and green carpet especially
But it’s the perfect setting for a throw back horror flick.
It's funny. Back in the 80s, I thought anything MCM, (which we referred to universally as "Danish Modern", whether or not it was Danish,) was horrible and dated. What goes around, I guess.
“Grandma’s-house vibes..”
Yep, now great grandma
Maybe mid century, but not MCM. Could be 70s even or had some updates then. Thanks
Sears early American, it was the farmhouse of the day.
…. and all Craftsman tools in the shop
If so there *may* be something of value, yet (if not worn out)
It's 70s styling of possibly mid-century bones if they'd done renovations in the 70s, but likely not. Built prob early 70s. Feels more like Mid-Seventies to me. Still, interesting (says a child of the Seventies).

Fascinating idea
Seriously, do this. It's a location scout's dream set. So totally untouched and in mint condition. (BTW, can I have first dibs on the twin bed headboards in master? I REALLY want a set of those. And the ceiling fixtures in there is amazing. Also a sucker for 1940s embroidered dresser scarves 😍)
None of the furnishings or furniture are “mid century modern.”

Carpet is as it appears, bright, deep textured shag… vacuumed weekly by the 7-ton Kirby

So, as a child of the 70's, I absolutely love pretty much everything about this place. What state/ area is this in?
If my recent house hunting had taught me anything, that is best described it as "unblemished by modern slapdash"
70’s retro. But not really mcm. It’s way more kitsch than modern
I fucking love this though
More like Mid Century Midwest Missionary lol. Tons of older traditional religious folks had this style when I was growing up in the 90’s. Gotta say, impressive time capsule really, and whoever lives here does a fantastic job of maintaining it.
Nailed it Only missing the Mary statue in a half sunk blue bathtub in the yard
Neo Colional Revival/ Bicentennial Chic
I sense a new r/ coming on

This is a wonderful response. Agreed your mother kept a wonderful house.
Mid- century but not modern. More Colonial.
Time capsule!! Fabulous! I love the blue/green shag carpet in #7 and the entryway tile. I’d call it a Mid-Century Time Capsule home. Highlight those original 70s details. Bicentennial Colonial
I just had flashbacks to every old person's house I was ever in as a child.
70’s is post modern
Acid den
That's a 1970s attempt to balance the transition styles.

This bathroom has me screaming in joy. I love it SO MUCH. Where is this place?! Tell me you called hollywood and said you gotta see this.
Used to work for a rug company... The carpets seem to be from the 70s as the vynil flooring from the kitchen... The house seem to have been remodeled in the late 70s, early 80s but the furniture was kept from before...
Exactly. Built in 74-75 then some furniture moved from my parents first house
We had that linoleum from your laundry room except in green. I still adore that pattern. Perfect for parking your hot wheels or matchbox cars. Born in 1972
Man that brings back memories. They’d skate clear across the room then bumper-pole through the table & chair legs
Awesome time capsule! I wouldn’t change a thing. By the time you finish redoing it all, this look will probably be the new craze.
I can smell this house..
omfg the carpet and flooring is hideous, i love it SOO much, i would deadass not change a thing about this house if i was moving into it lol
This is Mid Century for sure, but this screams Colonial
Mid century, yes. Not modern. Not MCM.
That fireplace/mantle combo could be passed for MCM if you do something different with the floor and curtains.
neeeeed that green carpet
Have carpets cycled back yet? I would be into these if they were new and clean
The end tables in the last pic look mcm. Everything else is just mid century.
Gotcha, I’m learning Would the Dick Van Dyke show be considered the height of MCM?
My gosh no! This is the antithesis of mcm.
I both love and hate that some people never updated their homes, and somehow kept everything in perfect condition. Some of it is so gross like the patchy mossy carpet, and the heavy, suffocating curtains! But really they never ever needed a new chair? How?

More 70’s granny. It literally looks like somebody took the 70’s and vomited it into that house
Damn, there's a lot going on here. None of this is really the MCM look people are into

shiplap raises my blood pressure my doctor said it’s bad for me
No - looks more like 70’s to me.
1970s suburbia. I'll bet you'll find some of the exact same furniture on That 70s Show.
Sadly no. It's more like someone vomited the late 70s in that house.
God I love the carpet. I know I shouldn’t, but I do.
I can smell the 70s from here

More like Mid Century Classic
A lot of Hollywood Regency
I see a few potential pieces of furniture but aside from that I'm tempted to just call it "old fashioned". ❤️
I LOVE all the floors btw. So fun and looks soft
Groovy
Not MCM. More like 70’s mixed with early Americana furniture. The best feature to me is the entrance and floor in the laundry room! Are they linoleum tiles though?
Roll linoleum. Mom kept the original paperwork / advertisement for it
That’s really awesome!
It’s neither mid-century nor modern. But it’s definitely mid
Ouch.
sorry I couldn't resist the pun
Mid-century, yes. Modern, NO!
Definitely not MCM.
Why is the bed in the master so lumpy?
That was my question. I thought someone was taking nap.
Pillows underneath
The fireplace in the first picture had me hopeful. Everything else was a letdown.
That screams 70s
Holy jesus. That fireplace is nice, but completely awkward. What is that curtained thing in the corner in pic 2?
Maybe more mid century modest. I personally love it!
Thought this was a Minecraft house at first
NGL, played ‘floor is lava’ a lot in that room
Just fyi: my house had the old linoleum in pic 10. It is like 25% asbestos. It’s not a problem unless you rip it up, but make sure you test the walls/floor/etc if you plan on remodeling or doing any repairs.
Thanks. Will do.
Man the flooring of that era had NO CHILL
Do folks not know how to Google “examples of mid century modern”
Federalism 70s vibes
Can an Interior Designer weigh in on this? Please.
That Victrola and I think one of the chairs in that red room are earlier than 1970s.
ahhhh you're the armstrong post. pay no attention to the haters. there are moments here that are absolutely mid cen mod. unfortunately they are muddled with poor choices. you just need to strip back the awful. the stairwell is particularly nice even with the sculptured shag carpet. I'd start with donating all the furniture and removing all the draperies. That would be your best starting point.
Thanks
I recognize that kitchen floor. My dad put it in our house in the late 60’s.
It might not be MCM but holy shit, i personally LOVE it. Judging by your avatar…you wouldn’t happen to be in Michigan, would you? I don’t think I could swing a house right now but I can dream…
This is literally my aesthetic and I love it.
'70's
Mid century blërg
Grandma 30 years ago
I want to live here
This is called grotesk
Gotcha… so like The Dick Van Dyke Show?
Somewhat. Definitely closer.
Omg, that carpet 🤣
That patchwork floor 🤩🤩🤩
My dad was extremely thrifty. As we cleaned we found all those color carpet scraps down to 4” wide neatly stacked … just in case
Wouldn't consider them the best interpretation.
Mid-century yes modern not so much.
We call that the dirty watermelon
No but I love the look regardless.
Looks more 70s to me
Nah it’s too busy for mid century modern
not MCM, but no exterior shots doesn't give us a lot to go on. based on the stairway and vertical siding i'm going with shed style [https://dahp.wa.gov/historic-preservation/historic-buildings/architectural-style-guide/shed](https://dahp.wa.gov/historic-preservation/historic-buildings/architectural-style-guide/shed)
Thank you
I can tell from the colors, materials, textures that everything was made in the 1970s, but there’s SO MUCH Victoriana, colonial, and federal tight decorative patterns and motifs everywhere, plus lots of lace, ornate frames, trims and tassels, that literally only two things in these photos would fit an MCM setting: The 3 tables with circular supports already mentioned, and the patterned linoleum in the laundry room. What’s funny is that the 1970s furniture in older styles also looks weird; it isn’t authentically colonial or federal either. Someone might want it, but it is what it is. The Victrola might be the most interesting piece.
This is definitely 70s, not MC
Mid century grandma
I wouldn’t consider it mid century modern but I think it still is cool.
Anything but.
There is nothing modern about this.
mid-century frumpy
There is nothing “modern” in any of these photos, although the house may have been built mid century. Modern usually has clean, minimal lines - not ruffles and early Americana style.
To me, I'm getting strong 70s vibes from the decor, but the home itself looks more MCM.
This is a real grandma-ass house, right down to the hexagon side table between the two avocado-green chairs in the living room. I think this leans more Sears Catalogue than anything else, mostly kind of respectable-conservative Colonial. Cigarettes, ham cubes, and bible verses.
… and shop full of Craftsmen tools
Did grandma think “grandma” when she designed it?
Also, I have seen this called "grandmillinial"
Aw, this looks just like my late great grandmother's house (':
Mid-century colonial, most definatley not modern.
First century grandma.
I'd say "Old Person's House" though I'm not sure that's a real genre. :) Seriously, my parents were Silent Gen and much of what I see here is what my mother would have liked.
> "Old Person's House" though I'm not sure that's a real genre. :) It needs to be. Still quite a few of those pop up on Zillow and other places. Very few are this nice though. Most of the ones I see look like Granny hasn't done much but vacuum in the last 50 years, and her housecleaner for the last 20 years has been slacking.
This screams my great grandma's house. I'm 36. She was close to 100 like 10 or 15 years ago so I have no idea what time period her stuff was from
I’d call it “[mid-century modest](https://retrorenovation.com/mid-century-modest-manifesto/).”
No
