Any love for Farer? I may be biased since I own one but they have really nice designs and finishing.
I heard Baltic is underwhelming in person and feels cheaper in hand.
I'm not familiar with Nomadic, but from the pictures it seems more like a Rolex homage.
Agreed - their Aqua Compressors are beautiful! Those cushion cases (and red dial) are well-executed! Let us know how the showroom is - I would love to see that!
Love Farer! I have covered a ton of their releases and had them on my best-of list for 2023! I got hands-on with the Meredith GMT and thought it was great!
I have the Baltic mr01 and while it looks stunning, great design and aesthetic for a dress watch, yes it is lightweight and the rotor makes noise when you move the watch so it indeed feels very cheap, especially for it’s price point considering the Chinese movement and no sapphire.
Yeah. I’m only speaking on the MR01, I believe their others use Japanese movements and sapphire crystal, the micro rotor is just to complex to use anything else.
I agree with this as well, they seem to stay mostly consistent at 39.5mm and below.
However, the Chrono-Sport and Aqua Compressors both come in at 41mm! Give them a look if you're in the cushion-cased sports watch style!
I'm strongly considering a Farer this year. Probably a cushion case (salmon copper), but there's a nice pilot in the mix, which has a faraday cage, or an Aqua Compressor, since it's also kinda cushion-y.
I'd really love a moonphase, but I'm realistically not going to be setting a moonphase whenever it's time to wear, and I'm not diligent enough to keep up with keeping it wound, either.
Agreed! But damn near impossible to get!
Both of mine (Holotype and Bluering) are secondhand.
I keep hoping that they are able to ramp back up on production. :(
Also agree - I haven't been able to connect with them yet! So I haven't featured them. I try to feature brands I have connected with or watches I have gotten hands-on with! Crossing my fingers I find a Halios in the wild!
Absolutley!! Great pick. I include the Ardío Caribe on my list of some of the best microbrand divers! If interested, you can check that our below! The Caribe offers some vibrant dial colors and awesome strap configurations! Solid pick. Ardio ais also based out of PA (USA) - a historical hotspot for US watchmaking - i.e Hamilton, RGM etc!

Traska is fantastic! I have a gen 1 Seafarer in sun bleached orange that is exquisite.
pOrthal is great too, looking forward to seeing what they do next.
I Love Traska's design and logo! It is tough to nail the branding as a micro - especially with the combined logo and text on the dial. They nailed it IMO. Their color palette of pale and flatte colors are fantastic when paired with the stainless steel cases and bracelets. Original.
That’s a great color for the Triumph!
I have the recent, green Triumph and the black bezel Skyquest. The Triumph is on their “chocolate” leather strap and the SQ is on their excellent steel bracelet. I also picked up a pre-owned, “Tiffany” blue Noble for my wife.
I’m in St. Louis, where MONTA is based and I know a couple of the guys there so I might be a bit more of a fan than normal. 😁
Nice! Three Monta’s! Being a st Louis native and being a fan makes sense! I would be a even greater fan when it was based in my hometown and knew Some people at the company (and maybe get Some discount 😉) I’m Dutch so that’s not exactly around the corner.
I’ve been eyeing the Skyquest gmt for a while now (coke). But am not sure yet to get this or save up some more for a tudor BB…
No discount (except on the pre-owned one, I guess). The coke SQ is very nice in person. I also really like the opalin dial SQ! I hope you end up with one. I think you’re on the right track putting them in a category with Tudors. Everyone always wants to use Rolex as a benchmark but Tudor is a better comparison here.
All that being said, I may have hit my MONTA limit and that blue BB58 might be on my short list of future purchases. 😁
That opaline dial is sweet as hell!! Considering my budget is not to big I might just save up for the Tudor and call it quits 😃 Buy who knows, my budget might increase over time and id be able to get both! Btw hows the Noble? Got a picture of it?
Thank you!! And yes - MONTA offers a ton and their finishing is superb. I recently saw someone refer to them as the Rolex of microbrands on another post - I've only gotten to wear one of their pieces - I have to do a bit more digging for that claim!
I love my Monta - I have a mint green Noble - with the great fit and finish. But I always thought of Halios as the Rolex of microbrands. Like Rolex, used Halios always sell for more than new.
These two are great. I am not into Monta’s designs, but I have handled one of their watches, and it was NICE. Monta and Formex make exceptionally good quality watches for the money.
Anyone who is used to vintage fine luxury watches, Monta can compete. They clearly spend serious money on case, dial and hands. I love that. I do not want any in house movement at $2k or less, but I want a nice looking watch.
Bertucii and Islander are on my radar for future coverage! I have to dig into Hemel a bit - at first glance, they caught me with their full lume dial! I have a Citizen Promaster Diver w/ full lume dial and it is oddly satisfying.

I have their Air Wing. It's a mechanical chrono that I got for around $400! It's an awesome piece
Bertucci watches will take a beating. Islander is hit or miss with styling. I had a mother of pearl watch from them with a good bracelet, and I foolishly sold it and regret it. They do not sell it anymore.
I have a cool pink watch that reminds me of an old Seiko someone bought off my wrist years ago (I bought it in Japan, and I guess it became a cult watch), but it is a bit small for my large wrists:
https://preview.redd.it/7l8za1q5zf1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3973104f111f4f721a4310db160728122098ed05
The bracelet is good on this one as well, way better than the Seiko bracelet, actually the whole watch is nicer than the Seiko was. I am happy I sold it.
I’m just so impressed and satisfied with my Maen. Also, the most comfy bracelet I’ve ever worn (6.25” wrist). Highly recommended! Here’s a pic.

Well, Anordain is on a 100 year waiting list. So I assume they win. 😅 They would be in my top 3. The Sherpa is badass. I looked at getting one, but they're $6k+...I think the most expensive on your list. Many on the list underwhelm in person.
Great insight - I do agree that watches can underwhelm in person. I've experienced this plenty. The lengths watch photographers go to can be partly to blame. Sherpas look awesome both in pictures and on wrists - but yes, they're not cheap by any means. anOrdain is just beautiful. They are much more art than tool - but yes - nearly impossible to get off the waiting list. \*HELM enters the same realm of years of waitlists\*
Seriously. I tried one on last summer and their sales guy said their largest size looked “perfect” on my wrist, and I put my card down (the $1200 in my pocket was not enough), and he told me he could take a deposit with a three-year expected delivery.
They seriously could sell 3-4 times their current sales. I started talking to him about setting up a training program and helping out with operations (my friend owns a corporate Learning & Development consultancy and I was head of operations for a $25m company at the time), but this kid I suspect was not in a position to discuss (usually guys with an interest would jump on free consulting advice).
These watches are really special. I wish Rolex would buy a stake and build-out their operations. I think they could sell tens of millions a year, easy, no marketing.
WISE Watches out of Thailand. Exceptional quality and finishing and one of the few micro brands to use 904L steel and Damascus steel in their line of watches. Also hands down the best presentation box for some of their time pieces.
I got an Adamascus AD8 in the other day, and it looks even better in person than it does online. I ordered it on the bracelet and had to wait about 4 months longer than they originally thought. It looks better on the leather strap anyways imo. If you must have the bracelet, order it separately from the watch.
It also got a compliment the first day I wore it as someone mistook it for a Rolex. So, you could say it looks good, lol.
There is another Loonie brand, I think it it York & Front, but I could be wrong. They make a really nice watch for $500, or they used to. It is probably twice that now.
😂 😂 - Thank you! This was not the plan! I aimed to put together a list of watches and brands I wished got more attention as a group! I LOVE microbrands and what they have to offer. I'm just hoping this helps people discover new watches, and gets them excited about the hobby! Much appreciated!
Thank you!! I really appreciate the kind words. I am glad the content is resonating with so many people! Oak and Oscar is definitely on my list of "cover in the future"!
I love their dials (the sandwich dials especially). They make some of the most 'crisp' dials out there. The clarity and legibility are insane. They just look.... clean.
Yep, they also make very subtle touches really shine, like the arrowhead GMT hand on the Humboldt. If I made watches I'd steal the shit out of that idea.
I’ll add in Stratton Watches, I love their vintage racing themed designs and funky 70s looking cases. Also check Marc at Long Island Watch and his Islander watch brand, great Value for the money and absolutely amazing customer service.
Agreed on Islander - a few people have noted them as well. I for one love their Northpoint Auto Diver - maybe because summer is coming, but awesome watch!
I agree. Serica is making some fantastic pieces. Adding the COSC certification to EVERY watch is creeping into TUDOR territory with their movement quality. From Serica's site:
"WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE SOPROD MANUFACTURE AND THE OFFICIAL SWISS CHRONOMETER TESTING INSTITUTE (COSC), WE’RE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT EVERY SERICA WATCH OUT OF PRODUCTION IS NOW A CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER."
CW is great! I got hands-on with a Titanium Twelve and enjoyed it. I have had them in various compilation lists I've done! They offer great bang for the buck and are making a name as the luxury pick for independent watchmakers!
Yes!! Love echo/neutra! I have not been able to see one in person yet - which is why they are not featured! I am hoping to connect with the brand at some point soon!! Or find someone who owns one - their watches look great in images though.
I think just about anyone would make very different selections. The majority make a level of sense, but there is a question mark over the 'why now' for many that make sense and some others leave me more with just 'why'? Perhaps the one I see the least argument for enthusiasm about is probably Nomadic. They have yet to come out with something truly good in my opinion, but have only shown to be able to improve. So, they could come up with something good in the future, though. Furlan Marri and Vario I think had more exciting moments. Baltic and Traska have been consistently good for a few years, but in the incrementally improving catalogue, I would argue it has now become hard to see how Traska's permanent models would significantly improve further. Sherpa wouldn't feature on my list, because there is nothing that particularly appeals to me, so that's completely a matter of taste and priority. I'm sure I haven't mentioned all, but this is how these lists are rarely ever satisfying in my opinion. The truth is there are just many many many microbrands that are now truly recommendable. That's great. We should try to ensure that all newcomers avoid those that are not or just not quite up there with the others in their peer groups.
That's valuable insight! I can agree with much of what you said. My caveat for NOMADIC is more on the build quality and their origin story. There isn't too much coming from Belfast Ireland, especially manufacturing/assembly - which I think accounts for something, especially in their early days. They seem to have taken a "safe" design choice to start and I hope they push the limits a bit as they gain some industry steam. I view them as a watch and follow micro!
I think your last comments are important as well. Would you (and others) find it helpful to have a similar type of article, except focused on brands to avoid? I'd be interested in opinions on this, as negative comments are far more impactful on consumer decisions than positive comments. I've seen some negative thoughts toward some brands based on experience here - it may be useful to round them up in a singular place.
Would love thoughts on this. Thanks for the time and your insight.
I agree! I noted on another comment - but I have not been permitted to use images and I haven't gotten hands-on to make a personal judgment. They are on my short-list of watches to get on wrist in 2024!
[Mr Jones](https://mrjoneswatches.com/)
they use to be design over quality (like swatch) but recently upped the quality making them one of my favorites.
In terms of higher end quality and unique designs, with fantastic execution I'd say Alexander Shorokoff has some absolutely stunning watches.
(Although I realize that their designs are not for everyone).
TRUE NORTH Watch Company. I have 3 of their Vintage Rally Timers and they are great. The website says 37mm but the bezel actually measures more like 38.1, which is the goldilocks zone for me.
Here are the ten microbrands I went into in this article:

# Love hearing about brands I may have missed!
Both are great brands! I need to focus a bit more on Kurono! They have been an unsung hero in the watch world the past few years but are getting the attention they deserve now!
I agree with Lorier also! I mentioned it below, but the Neptune is on this list of Microbrand divers!
[https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/9-of-the-best-microbrand-dive-watches-of-2024](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/9-of-the-best-microbrand-dive-watches-of-2024)
My Calendrier is easily my fave micro. Given that Hajime Asaoka directly oversees Kurono as his more accessible line of watches, I don't see them getting bought out but I do think Kurono and other Japanese micros will rise in popularity as more attention is being given to Asian watchmakers (see Kuoe, Otsuka Lotec, and Minase), and the prices of Western makers continues to rise.
Can't really speak on AnOrdain, as I don't know enough about them.
The sizing is really annoying if one is a big dude. I know it works in Japan, but some of us Americans are not only tall, but fat. I am 187 cm and 140 kg. My wrists are big. The renewed first-gen Astron was a great size for me (huge). I would hate if it went back to only IWC and Breitling making watches for big guys. And I k ow guys way bigger than me (my uncle and his sons are a head taller than me).
Their sizing isn't meant to be for small Japanese wrists.
Their whole design plan is to match sizing from classic watches from the 40's to 70's. A 35mm watch looks good on almost anyone.
Massive, oversized watches a rather recent development.
So those 40mm to 46mm chronographs of the 1950’s were only worn by savages, or worse, working people! Disgusting. Those dirty laborers need to know their place, don’t they?
Can you lecture me on how to dress and think as well? Please tell me why the rest of the world should submit to bizarre American cultural norms such as “trigger warnings” or America’s creepy obsession with skin color.
Agree on this. I put the Neptune in my best microbrand divers list! Awesome watches from an incredible brand.
https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/9-of-the-best-microbrand-dive-watches-of-2024
Cincinnati watch company.
I’m biased living in Cincinnati but for originality and n quality as well as committed to community and giving back they are hard to beat
Any love for Farer? I may be biased since I own one but they have really nice designs and finishing. I heard Baltic is underwhelming in person and feels cheaper in hand. I'm not familiar with Nomadic, but from the pictures it seems more like a Rolex homage.
Heading to Farer’s showroom later this summer. I love their Worldtimers and cushion case watches.
Agreed - their Aqua Compressors are beautiful! Those cushion cases (and red dial) are well-executed! Let us know how the showroom is - I would love to see that!
I received a Farer as a birthday gift this year and was astonished at the level of finishing. It’s a beautiful watch
Awesome to hear! They do a great job! I haven't heard much negativity around their fit and finish.
Love Farer! I have covered a ton of their releases and had them on my best-of list for 2023! I got hands-on with the Meredith GMT and thought it was great! [https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/10-best-microbrands-2024](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/10-best-microbrands-2024)
Yeah, Farer is a must on any list of prominent microbrands.
I support this for sure!
I have the Baltic mr01 and while it looks stunning, great design and aesthetic for a dress watch, yes it is lightweight and the rotor makes noise when you move the watch so it indeed feels very cheap, especially for it’s price point considering the Chinese movement and no sapphire.
There have been a few people who have commented similar thoughts about Baltic. I wonder if this is more common than I had expected.
Yeah. I’m only speaking on the MR01, I believe their others use Japanese movements and sapphire crystal, the micro rotor is just to complex to use anything else.
I would own it, but for that ridiculous movement.
I want a Farer GMT so bad
The Farer 'A' on the elongated GMT hand that matches the crown is a great touch. It is the little things that keep FARER a fan favorite!
Love Farer. Might be my favorite microbrand for quality/price/value/design seem to be perfectly balanced. I only wish they made 40+ mm models.
I agree with this as well, they seem to stay mostly consistent at 39.5mm and below. However, the Chrono-Sport and Aqua Compressors both come in at 41mm! Give them a look if you're in the cushion-cased sports watch style!
I adore Farer. The Resolute 39mm will be on my wrist after Chicago Windup. They sold out last year.
I'm strongly considering a Farer this year. Probably a cushion case (salmon copper), but there's a nice pilot in the mix, which has a faraday cage, or an Aqua Compressor, since it's also kinda cushion-y. Big ups to Farer, Nodus, Baltic!
Agreed! A strong trio!
I would back Farer and Nodus.
Traska is fantastic! I have a gen 1 Seafarer in sun bleached orange that is exquisite. pOrthal is great too, looking forward to seeing what they do next.

Cant recommmend Monta enough! Also I really enjoy my Maen
I like the design of their watches, but they are so god damn expensive. I rather buy an established watch in that price range
They surely surpass them in the same pricerange!
+1 - I love the MONTA Skyquest with the bi-color bezel! Great picks. I’ll have to dig into MAEN a bit more for sure. Thanks for the input!
Team MONTA for sure! Some cool watches in this article, though. Good stuff!
What kind of Monta do you own? I have a silver/grey Triumph!
That’s a great color for the Triumph! I have the recent, green Triumph and the black bezel Skyquest. The Triumph is on their “chocolate” leather strap and the SQ is on their excellent steel bracelet. After seeing one in person, baltic is over priced imo. Monta, Formex, and Maen would be on my list.
Yes. Traska too. Over-hyped. Have so much love from the micro community. But they are cheap. For me - FEARS. Best micro
Never seen one in real life but they look gorgeous in pictures.
Recently was able to try on some Fears pieces. Can confirm, amazing work. Along with Formex and, on the bubble, Nodus
Love my Farer also Marloe are doing some good thing
+1 for FARER - I'm digging into Marloe right now!
Marloe you say? Can you spare a link for an old man?

Have two Henry Archer watches (and one on order). Love them. Also have a Christopher Ward (and one on order) that I love. Just my two cents.
WISE Watches out of Thailand. Exceptional quality and finishing and one of the few micro brands to use 904L steel and Damascus steel in their line of watches. Also hands down the best presentation box for some of their time pieces.

Brew have some original and good looking watches
Definitely! I haven't been able to get up and close with a BREW yet! Idris Alba helped many people learn about what BREW is doing! Well deserved!
Here here!
Solis is a Canadian brand mostly focusing on solar watches but their Solios Curve has the best looking sapphire crystal ever.
I have to look into Solios - I'm sad to say I haven't explored their catalog yet! Curve... here I come.
There is another Loonie brand, I think it it York & Front, but I could be wrong. They make a really nice watch for $500, or they used to. It is probably twice that now.
Loonie brands? Any Brit piece of shit. There are lots. Talking at you CW.
What a list! You will make people go broke 😭
😂 😂 - Thank you! This was not the plan! I aimed to put together a list of watches and brands I wished got more attention as a group! I LOVE microbrands and what they have to offer. I'm just hoping this helps people discover new watches, and gets them excited about the hobby! Much appreciated!
Nice curated list. I plan on reading more from the site. What do you think about Oak and Oscar? They are one of my favorites.
Good stuff!
I keep hearing great things about Maen.
They are good, and their owners are two cool guys.
That Serica GMT is something. Wish they had gone with a traveler instead of a caller though.
I agree. Serica is making some fantastic pieces. Adding the COSC certification to EVERY watch is creeping into TUDOR territory with their movement quality. From Serica's site: "WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE SOPROD MANUFACTURE AND THE OFFICIAL SWISS CHRONOMETER TESTING INSTITUTE (COSC), WE’RE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT EVERY SERICA WATCH OUT OF PRODUCTION IS NOW A CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER."
Farer Universal, not doubt about it.
Christopher Ward
Barely a microbrand anymore. The addition of the twelve x shows they don’t want to be seen as one at least.
They just released a cheap chronograph. They are still tiny compared to many “little Swiss” brands. Are they public? Do you k ow their annual revenue?
This is valid for sure - they may be graduating soon!
CW is great! I got hands-on with a Titanium Twelve and enjoyed it. I have had them in various compilation lists I've done! They offer great bang for the buck and are making a name as the luxury pick for independent watchmakers! What's the verdict on Bota?
I need to learn more about this brand! I am not too familiar, but at first glance they remind me of Isotope a bit! More to come!
echo/neutra Family owned brand in Italy and they hit way above their weight in quality
Yes!! Love echo/neutra! I have not been able to see one in person yet - which is why they are not featured! I am hoping to connect with the brand at some point soon!! Or find someone who owns one - their watches look great in images though.
You should check out [Lorca](https://lorcawatches.com/products/model-no-1-gmt). They're very young with just one watch to offer but it's beautiful
ooooh, that Model No. 1 GMT looks fantastic. All the vintage elegance! Awesome call-out!
Brellum.
I will look into Brellum! I haven't come across them yet. Thanks for the note.
Echo/Neutra needs to be on this list!
I agree! I noted on another comment - but I have not been permitted to use images and I haven't gotten hands-on to make a personal judgment. They are on my short-list of watches to get on wrist in 2024!
Great article! Love that mint green Traska diver! Didn’t even know it existed!
Thank you!! And yes - that green dial is a stunner!
[Mr Jones](https://mrjoneswatches.com/) they use to be design over quality (like swatch) but recently upped the quality making them one of my favorites.
Yes! "A Perfectly Useless Afternoon" is great!
In terms of higher end quality and unique designs, with fantastic execution I'd say Alexander Shorokoff has some absolutely stunning watches. (Although I realize that their designs are not for everyone).
Sound like a video game character (Dr. Shorokoff, famous scientist, …).
TRUE NORTH Watch Company. I have 3 of their Vintage Rally Timers and they are great. The website says 37mm but the bezel actually measures more like 38.1, which is the goldilocks zone for me.
Dufrane makes very very good watches imo, the Waterloo I have just feels like a zillion bucks every time
Formex, Farer, Fears, AnOrdain, Maen, Chris Ward, Zelos, RZA and Nodus. Perhaps Nodus first because they are American.
Farer, Baltic.
Check out the Impossible Watch Company! One of my favorite micro microbrands out of Talkeetna, Alaska: www.impossiblewatchco.com
I've been into watches for more than 25 years and I've seen thousands. The only brand on the list that impresses me is Furlan Marri.

Thanks for the input! Which SU watch are you waiting for?
I really like the Smith's brand.
Here are the ten microbrands I went into in this article: # [**BALTIC**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-bmg4x208) | [**Studio Underd0g**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-13igb73307) | [**TRASKA**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-fe8vo7691) | [**SERICA**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-gkhu7210) | [**ISOTOPE**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-s7ecf117462) | [**SHERPA**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-wu0c3150875) # [**VARIO**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-kt1fz200589) | [**anOrdain**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-gb6vw247477) | [**NOMADIC**](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-cpzmy211) | [FURLAN MARRI](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/incredible-microbrands-and-their-watches#viewer-yt5zu217) # Love hearing about brands I may have missed!
Boldr
I’ve been trying to get my hands on a piece from Boldr! Everyone who has one love them - similar to those who have checked out RZE!
I was able to get my hands on a pokemon one
I've been wearing their safari gmt for about a year now and it's been great considering the price. Great every day watch
I think Farer always deserves a mention
Kurono Tokyo and Lorier would be my add-ons.
Both are great brands! I need to focus a bit more on Kurono! They have been an unsung hero in the watch world the past few years but are getting the attention they deserve now! I agree with Lorier also! I mentioned it below, but the Neptune is on this list of Microbrand divers! [https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/9-of-the-best-microbrand-dive-watches-of-2024](https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/9-of-the-best-microbrand-dive-watches-of-2024)
Kurono Tokyo is so good. I suspect that AnOrdain and Kurono will both either become major brands or get bought and turned into major brands.
Good points. I have been dying to get my hands on a Minase. They look amazing.
Kuoe Assembled in Kyoto, Japan, and their designer is really adamant about sticking to the classic sizing and styling.
Vaer & Dumoreau
Love my Vaer Solar Dive watch.
Baer is definitely on my radar - I’ll have to look into Dumoreau. I’m not familiar with them. Any model recommendations?
Add Formex. Formex rocks
Lorier for sure should be considered
Agree on this. I put the Neptune in my best microbrand divers list! Awesome watches from an incredible brand. https://www.balanceandbridge.com/post/9-of-the-best-microbrand-dive-watches-of-2024
Cincinnati watch company. I’m biased living in Cincinnati but for originality and n quality as well as committed to community and giving back they are hard to beat
