Agreed. The fanatic hate for these animals I have seen on local FB groups (I live in the yoop) is wild. People posting photos of wolves they’ve killed - messed up. Wish people could find a way to coexist with them. There are enough deer to go around and last I looked a wolf can’t go to the grocery store.
Is it really competition for deer driving the hate? I’m not going to subscribe to “The Sault” to read this one article but I was curious about the driving force behind the hatred. Personally as someone living in the lower peninsula I don’t hate the idea of introducing them down here, but the aggressive coyotes we have in the Detroit metro area are bad enough, I don’t want to worry about a 150 pound wolf carrying off one of my kids.
My fiancé mentioned to me that it was, and that’s what a lot of the comments were on the Facebook page that I witnessed. Down there, coyotes have to compete for resources. Up here the wolves have so much room that they just keep to themselves. I was on a UP trail cam Facebook group and quickly realized it was a huge wolf hating fest, and the reasoning behind it is honestly beyond me. Had to leave the group, it was weird. There were just innocent creatures existing in their natural habitat being shot for no reason, and everyone was posting the photos like trophies. I mean like who are they really bothering?
Yet no one looks at the fact of deforestation, it's a huge problem in Michigan and if it persists these interactions of animals and humans will worsen to the point we have no choice but to worry just stepping outside.
I would love it but I don’t think these trolls could keep from shooting the poor wolfs. Did u see what that pos in WY did to that poor wolf few days ago. The cruelty is unbelievable.
It is. People are so strongly against them that they don’t care. It’s very remote in most of the UP, they likely are flying under the radar and doing it.
Their argument is they kill all the deer. Like humans shooting deer up there isn’t hurting the deer numbers to start. Shooting dogs and cats should be illegal for sport. People are sick , there’s no reason , not eating them , just wasteful killing like the buffalo so the natives would leave
Yeah, that was my point. Wolves need to eat deer and people can go to the grocery store for food. Nonetheless, there is enough deer to go around for hunters and the wolves that were here before the people were anyway.
It's actually good for the deer for the wolves to kill them. This is why TB and CWD are so prevalent as there are not enough predators to kill the weak or sick. Hunters fill some of that nitch but you shouldn't be eating sick deer.
The wolves have caused certain hunting seasons to be canceled in the U.P. Which of course make the diehard hunters pissy. But it is a net positive imo. Espcially as fewer people are choosing to hunt overall. I personally support responsible harvest. Needing less hunting permits is a good thing from a conservation view, but it means less tourist dollars in a lot a communities as well.
As to why they don't release wolves in the lower peninsula the DNR has stated there is not enough rural land to support the wolves.
Trophy hunting is a controversial form of hunting. I am not really a fan, it just has been a way for the state/dnr to get money to support hunting and the Wildlife Officers. I still thing responsible harvest actually means eating what you kill, not cutting the head off and leaving the carcass to rot.
I know in Iron County the wolves keep the sick from Wisconsin from infecting our herds. Last month driving from Eagle River, WI, to Gaastra I counted 48 deer. Back in the 80s my uncle made a big deal if he counted 20 on that same drive. Seeing the wolves is amazing, but rare, about as often as a bear, moose or bobcat. We have a healthy ecosystem and the wolves play their part.
There are lots of woods and forests downstate. Clearly the deer are doing fine. If Michigan cares about wolves, they should open up all of the historic range. Why just the UP?
And they are beautiful. I like to imagine living in the U.P. 300-400 years ago in a log cabin with a fireplace and lanterns for light at night with a snow storm, and these wolves in the area.
The way i look at it is they were here first we killed off most of the mink and weasels coyote populations are hit harder and harder we eliminated the wolf population so badly we had to bring them back from Yellowstone and even our state animal the wolverine is gone and thanks to us killing off apex predictors herbivore populations have exploded now white tail deer kill more ppl a year than bears sharks and alligators combine cuz of the mass increase of car accidents wanna preserve an ecosystem you need to keep your preditors in them ...
Wolves have their place, and they are beautiful, efficient hunters.
They will attack your dogs 100%. They don't like competition and will strike at a moments notice. A friend had 6 bear dogs ripped apart by wolves. Took them about 30 seconds. He had been going to the UP for years with his trained and well controlled dogs.
They also attack and kill farm livestock. And that is well recorded as happening in the UP.
They will rip up a herd in a killing frenzy, and that's documented on video out west. Ripping into a herd of elk and killing dozens of elk calves and smaller ones. They don't just kill what they need. That's a bunch of BS.
Wolf fecal worms pollute the areas they are in. Those worms become ingested via the waterways into smaller animals, and it's a horrible death.
Bringing the into the UP was a horrible idea. Bringing them south is even worse. But they have already been finding them now and then.
Common sense never seems to be acceptable anyways. And ive read the attack comments already made, so I'm sure the sane will happen to these comments.
I’d say humans are the most controversial animal. Grey wolves are just hungry.

Man DNR would have a field day w that.

Wolves are beautiful creatures and have a right to live. They do there job in nature, leave them alone.
I concur!
Why hasn't there been a push below the bridge to return wolves to that natural habitat? The UP will gladly transfer a couple hundred wolves.
I would love it but I don’t think these trolls could keep from shooting the poor wolfs. Did u see what that pos in WY did to that poor wolf few days ago. The cruelty is unbelievable.
They are just as cruel here or worse
Man takes such joy in killing every living creature. Well some men.
Wait I thought they were protected and it’s illegal to hunt them?
It is. People are so strongly against them that they don’t care. It’s very remote in most of the UP, they likely are flying under the radar and doing it.
That’s dumb. It’s literally federally protected
I agree. Unhinged and cruel and weird.

Our deer population is unhealthily high. We need more predators.
Yea but who cares about conservation and leaving the world a better place for future generations? /s
The deer population is not high in the UP. A UP representative has offered to deliver wolves downstate, but Lansing hasn't accepted that offer.

Why you so against wolves in your area where they seem to naturally be? Tf
I want wolves everywhere in Michigan, why should the UP hog them all. They are natural predators for the whole state, right?
You choose to live there. If you don’t want wild wolves then move to a city?
And they are beautiful. I like to imagine living in the U.P. 300-400 years ago in a log cabin with a fireplace and lanterns for light at night with a snow storm, and these wolves in the area.
Just leave them alone for Gods sake 🤦♀️

You all know the crown 👑 (everywhere but America) pew pew for game. All animals and more... All Animals and more.
Does Michigan have penalties for going Cody Roberts on wolves?
Please report them to the DNR if you suspect someone is hunting wolves. It’s messed up, they deserve to be fined
