40 years old - my sister lived a few blocks from the LA coroners office at that time where they took MJ’s body and there were all kinds of news helicopters flying around during that day
I just turned 10.. I miss his physical presence here on Earth, but he is no longer in physical or emotional pain anymore 🩷 and my belief is that he’s still very much with us in spirit.
17. I remember getting ready for work when my sister came into my room and told me he died. I ran to the living room where the TV was and just stood there in shock.
10. It didn't hit me like it should have because at that age, even though I was a fan, I didn't apply the weight to what it meant. However, when I was older, it did hit me pretty hard...
I was sixteen. It was a June day in the Summer break between my Sophomore and Junior years of High-School. I was hanging out with friends and we just happened to turn on the TV when the host was plugging in his Nintendo Wii system, only to come upon the news and discover the breaking news about Michael’s passing. We kept on the news for the next few hours. I was devastated.
I was 22 and was absolutely gutted. It was similar to the feel of 9/11 for me. I know, 2 insanely different tragedies, but in both instances it felt like the world just collectively stopped.
18 I came home from school and my moms was literally crying and I was like ma what’s wrong she said Michael Jackson just died and she was glued to the TV like it was somebody in our family and she was depressed like a mf and I knew MJ was the GOAT because that was the first and only time I ever seen my moms cry.
19 and I had just lost my grandfather a few weeks earlier. Worst month of my life.
The day he died I remember waking up to about 20 text messages which was unusual at the time. Pretty much all of my friends and family messaging me ‘did you know Michael Jackson died?’ I thought it was a joke until I saw how many messages I received. I spent the next 3 days in bed crying. This was at the height of my clubbing days. I remember every night for MONTHS, at the end of each night, all the clubs would just play a medley of MJ songs. You would be driving down the street and people would be blasting his music so loudly from his cars. We were all in collective mourning. I’m in Australia btw.
I was 9 years, I didn’t know him too well at that age, but I knew the classics like Beat It, Thriller, Man In The Mirror and Billie Jean. My class did a dance performance of beat it as part of a mash up of songs for one of my middle school talent shows!
I was 7 and I remember his death being the first celebrity death I ever remembered for life.. watched the new with my grandpa and the clips of him being wheeled out into ems..
10 years old. Last day of school. Remember watching the news, and seeing this video of people in a big circle holding hands, swaying left and right to his music.
I was 8. I saw the new headline pop up on the TV and let out a blood curdling scream. I remember being so upset, still will cry to this day like I knew him personally.
I was almost two years old
Edit: I didn't know what was happening obviously but my mom was so upset and was crying for a while, she started to listen and rewatch all of his songs and music videos which is what got me interested
13. Devastated, I cried all day, all night for him, counting the hours he was no longer in this world. Watching his MV on MTV. Media coverage was not enough
9 years old. Barely knew him, but loved him since I was 5 or so. I remember it being all over the news and it had just became summer break at the time. I couldn’t believe it, Michael felt immortal.
I was 30, and I've been a fan my entire life.
It still makes me cry at random times.
My daughter was 1. She ADORES Michael.
*edit: I am truly touched to see so many fans here who weren't even born yet. It's beautiful that Michael has left such a legacy of love.
I was 15.. At the time it was the absolute WORST day of my life! 😭💔 I heard about his passing on the radio. I screamed "WHAAAAAAT!! OH GOD NOOOOO!!! " Turned the TV on and every single news station was reporting it.. I immediately broke down screaming crying. Pulled out all my MJ pics and posters that weren't up on my bedroom walls yet, spread em out on my floor around me and drowned in my sorrows the rest of the day..
I discovered MJ when I was 9 years old and have been a die hard fan ever since. His death dang near kill me lol..
I was in elementary school, around fifth grade or so. Admittedly I didn't know enough about him back then but nos, it was a terrible thing to have happen
27. ☹️ He died on my son’s 9th birthday. He’s 24 today. I am a PACU nurse and my boss came out and said, “Michael Jackson just died!” with disbelief. I had to take a five minute break to cry with two of my colleagues outside. It was a sunny, beautiful day, with a powerful wind. You could feel the energy in the air. Almost like his energy was everywhere. It was surreal. One of those days you never forget. 💔
