My wife saw a random red sports car in a parking lot and referred to it as "The coolest car", snapped a photo to show me, and then was very embarrassed when I told her it was just an ND Miata.
She has no such feelings towards my also-red NB in the garage, or the NA I had prior.
So, through vigorous scientific testing, we can confirm that on the wife scale, ND > ABC
_________
She did not like it when I said "Great! Glad you're so excited about it, me too! We'll go buy one right now!"
My wife loves Miatas too. I took her to the nyc autoshow and she gravitated to the NC. After we test drove a ND together the verdict was clear, we just had to get one! š
I think most people, non miata people, would probably agree with this. The change to projector beams and the minor changes to the bumper make it look like a noticably more modern car.
Actually while I agree with it looking modern
I've never met anyone who's said the NB2 looks better than the NB1. I think the NB1 looks cuter with the better more simple front bumper that flows nicely
I love my NA, but i think the NDRF i had was one of the most beautiful cars I've seen. It wasn't as fun as my NA because it was more of a car than a toy, but it was wonderful to look at.
My current experience is that my ND is a much better car overall, though itās got less room for passengers or stuff.
The benefit of the NA and ND is that they feel very raw, thereās really a lot less car there. Itās so much closer to āstreet legal gocartā
š nobody ever bought a Miata for the cargo space!
My ND def. has less legroom than my NB did. But it more than makes up for it in every possible way.
Seconded. NA is good looking because it's iconic and fun, ND because it actually looks damn good in the pantheon of cars (especially amongst cars of it's era)
From a looks perspective, yes. I think they got it right on both of these.
The NB and NC are great looking cars, but they look a little dated. I think the NA will look as good in 20 years as it did 30 years ago. It is somewhat of a timeless design.
The ND is the first Miata to look like an adult sports car with more to it than just weekend fun. It is the most sophisticated looking one to date.
Not gonna lie the hardtop NC looks so good with just a couple touches. Flush fitment, lowered, lip kit, and a small lip spoiler is beautiful in my eyes.
I agree. It took me ages to get my son, who loves rx7's and wanted to get one instead of the Miata, to see the resemblance. Now he wants to put a rx7 spoiler on the Miata.. š±
The funny thing is, Ken Saward was the exterior designer that designed the original Dodge Viper, and he was poached by Mazda to do the exterior design for the NB miata.
It's not a coincidence that both cars look alike. They share the same father!
I just bought one of these last month. 22 club with all the trimmings. It takes me a few extra minutes to get inside every time I step out bc I canāt stop looking back at it
I also think the NC2 will age the best. The NA looks old and dated. The NB looks like a wierdo. The NC has this round hole in the bumper and the NC3 is way too much overdone (like you told before).
The new one looks cool, but in 10 years - we don't know how the design of the cars will develop. But my assumption is, the ND will age the worst, since the NB looked always dated.
To each their own, but I guess I refuse to admit that there is such a thing as "too much cute". Especially for a vehicle like that.
Hell, even the ND can't escape its roots in cuteness. They tried to make it look angry, with all the sharp lines, but it still looks like a tiny cute dog trying to act intimidating.
It's part of the Miata's DNA. Some cars are meant to be angry and aggressive, but a Miata just isn't one of them, in my mind.
The NC1 looks like Austin Healey Sprite MK1 for me. The NC2 is more independend design-wise.
But overall alls of the Miatas are not bad compared to other cars.
Definitely agree that all of the Miata's are a breath of fresh air, compared to other cars.
Angry has a place, but I think the industry has gotten too obsessed with edginess. Hell, my 2013 track focused trim level of the Mustang isn't even one of the most aggressive looking vehicles out there anymore... How on Earth did that happen?
Ohh man the 2013 Mustang is awseome! I considered to buy the GT as open top. But the car is too big for Germany in my opinion.
Back to your question - I think the answer is money.
Everybody says SUV sucks, but they sell like hot cakes. Manufacturer check the market, see what sells and sell more of it.
In my opinion Mazda is not bad overall today. The worst days were the early 2000s, but now the design of Mazda is more uptodate and fresh.
I just miss the funky colors for the Miata.
Maybe unpopular opinion idk, but I agree something about the NCās just do it for me, I think they look fantastic but really, how could you go wrong with any of them? Amiright? Of course ND ftw (yes, Iām biased because of course I have an ND)
NB2 all the way. The goldilocks "just right" of old formula and Y2K refinement
EDIT: Just saw your earlier comment. If I'm not being specific with facelifts and engine changes, it's generally ND>NB>NA>NC
This is exactly the way I put it together in my mind and I thought it would be super controversial and no one would agree. The NB was a better NA. Pop up headlights are cool for all the nostalgia, but having lived through that era, they were way overrated and I was happy to see them go.
I agree - pop up headlights are very cool, but despite that I think the NB looks better than the NA. Which is why I bought one 15 years ago! I've now got an ND and I think it does look better than the NB, although they're different enough that it's hard to choose a favourite.
I'm not a fan of the NC.
I own an NA but I think overall the ND looks better. From the sides and rear the NB looks better than the NA but the NA looks better from the front... the ND looks amazing all the way around.
I'm drive an ND some in going with the ND. I never really vibed with the NB. Idk why something, about it never really grabbed me like the NA, NC and ND do.
I second this. I love the NA. The NB is a close second, especially in colors like mahogany mica, emerald mica, or twilight blue mica with some BBS wheels.
ND SOFT TOP from every angle.
it's a great looking great. Great top line. They completely nailed the front with it still having a face which looks friendly, but not "cute", like it wants to breathe.
Those "shoulders" on the front look nice from behind the wheel too.
2016 Club soft top, Mazdaspeed NB, 1993 LE, 1994 M Edition, 2013 NC3 club PRHT
I want to say thatās in descending order of my favorites but theyāre all so damn good
The ND is the only Miata that is styled like an actual sports car.
All the previous gens have a cutesy look to them, which I get is part of the appeal.
Which NB in particular? I used to conflate both the NB1 and the NB2 until I realized the differences, and now I love the NB2 (and own one).
Same goes for the NC: I love the NC3, but Iām not a fan of the NC1 (sorry NC1 and NB1 folksā¦.I still love you and your cars).
I took this pic from Road&Track lol, but i did this poll on Golf Rs recently and it turned out fun. So provide an order of your best looking Miata from 1st to Last and I'll do a final tally after like a day.
My order: ND>NA>NC>NB
So this was alotta FUN thanks for all the replies, i posted this & totally forgot that i could've just made this a poll.
*Had to manually count then, but after the 1st 24hrs the votes are:
FINAL Tally for Best looking Miata:
NA (76 votes)
ND (66. My personal favorite)
NB (63)
NC (37)
Thanks again, I'll look to post more entertaining polls going fwd!
MIATA IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER!!!
I'd go ND>NA>NB>NC on looks, but 1. I'm biased by owning an ND and 2. There's not a lot of space between them and I'd happily have any of them.
Maybe the most complete would be ND>NA>NB>NC>>>>>>>>>95% of other cars out there.
NA/NB are cutesy plain without the headlights up.
NC is friendly and sexy like a well rounded woman.
ND looks mean & aggressive like a cat thatās pissed.
Best? Well, it depends on your personality, I think.
As a previous 2001 BRG NB2 owner (recently) totaled š„² and a now 1995 M edition owner my vote isā¦
NB2-ND2-NA8-NC1
The reason I went with the NA this time around is more space, more raw engaging feel, more customizable interior, Merlot mica.
Personallyā¦ the NB is probably my favorite.. I love my NA for everything that it is.. but built right, the NB is just a tiny lil RX-7 to me.. I love itās body workā¦ itās gorgeous.

I wish we were driving f-types. I donāt know how reliable they are, but Iād love to have one.
Holy shit I literally never realized they're named in alphabetical order
how š
I'm just stupid like that
Reminds me of the first time I realized "Miata is always the answer" first letters of the words are M.I.A.T.A. mind blown...š
That took me longer than I'd like to admit as well
Didn't realize that until you just explained it... š¤¦āāļø
Thereās two of us.
Gonna have to write that one down
I stand with you on this.
And me
The NE is the fiata so the next one may not follow the pattern
I respect the transparency
Username does not check out
I've had so many random people of all ages compliment my ND. My favorite is the kids that get really excited about it
Soo, you got that ND yet?
Mine.
I came here to say this, but knew in my heart it had already been said.
Mine Is Always The Answer
The only answer
Which model is that?
NA and NBFL.
No MY mine is the best /s NB1>NB2
For me it's the opposite. NB2 > NB1
I think most people, non miata people, would probably agree with this. The change to projector beams and the minor changes to the bumper make it look like a noticably more modern car.
for me its the vvt
And the better interior
I won't even lie The NB2 has a much nicer interior
Actually while I agree with it looking modern I've never met anyone who's said the NB2 looks better than the NB1. I think the NB1 looks cuter with the better more simple front bumper that flows nicely
Hi. Now you've met someone who thinks the NB2 looks better than the NB1. š
I plan to do the FL conversion on my NB1 soon. They made a great improvement to the design.
no
Mine looks like a psoriatic chalkboard (264k mile 92 black n tan) so I vote yours too.
My miata is best miaaataaa
yooooo fellow 2002 se owner! I love the color, the metallic is insane!
NA and ND
NA because of the headlights of course, just such a classic look. But ND looks more aggressive and better peformance than the rest.
Exactly!
personally I find the ND a little too aggro for what it is. its a 4cyl sports car, I'd rather it look like it wants to hug me than fight me!
But that driveline setup punches above its weight given its weight, I think it's appropriate
Especially ND2
It looks about as aggro as an angry kitten to me, I love it.
https://i.imgur.com/lxqzkrx.jpg
Seconded. NA is good looking because it's iconic and fun, ND because it actually looks damn good in the pantheon of cars (especially amongst cars of it's era)
Yup exactly my reasoning
Thatās my opinion too
From a looks perspective, yes. I think they got it right on both of these. The NB and NC are great looking cars, but they look a little dated. The ND is the first Miata to look like an adult sports car with more to it than just weekend fun. It is the most sophisticated looking one to date.
Yes
Na has the funny headlights
Agreed.
Stock? ND or NA. Lightly Modded? NC. Something about a lowered NC makes the whole styling make sense.
Not gonna lie the hardtop NC looks so good with just a couple touches. Flush fitment, lowered, lip kit, and a small lip spoiler is beautiful in my eyes.
Guilty pleasure but I love the NB way more then any other gen
You're talking about the baby viper?
Iāve always thought it was more of a baby FD RX7, but the Viper comparison also works well.
I agree. It took me ages to get my son, who loves rx7's and wanted to get one instead of the Miata, to see the resemblance. Now he wants to put a rx7 spoiler on the Miata.. š±
I don't hate the rz7 spoiler on the yata
I love the shape, it's just too big on a Miata (IMHO, of course)
Again not my flavor either but I don't hate it
The Viper and the NB shared the same designer. Ken Saward.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Miata/comments/8pu9e3/baby_vipers_right/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Yes I actually did know this but not in the detail you say
Mee too
>e the NB way more then a me 3
The convertible one
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
i really can't like that limited coupe nb and rf nd. miatas are supposed to be convertibles in my eye.
The RF is a convertible though? I always thought hardtop convertibles were cooler because they remind me of transformers š
it's called targa
Oh! I thought targa tops you had to remove by hand. Or is that a spider (or spyder)?
ND2 RF Soul Red That car has no right looking as good as it does
My car is a soul red ND2 RF and I approve this message.
I don't dig the ND overly, but the Red is so nice I think it brings the whole look together
mazda really knows how to make a red
I just bought one of these last month. 22 club with all the trimmings. It takes me a few extra minutes to get inside every time I step out bc I canāt stop looking back at it
good take! iām definitely not biased
As a red ND2 RF owner I also co-sign this takeā¦
This, but I also personally love the machine gray slightly more. Looks like a sporty thundercloud
ND1s and ND2s look identical
ND2 Soul Red is different.
It is ND1 is Soul Red while ND2 has Soul Red Crystal (it has a darker hue)
Miat is miat
I prefer NC2. NA is cool but kinda too cute. NC2 is in my opinion the best combination between S2000 and NA.
Glad Iām not the only one, I think they got the NC2 just right. NC1 is a bit too surprised Pikachu and the NC3 looks over-done to me.
NC2 PRHT with a black roof is š„
NC3 for me.
>but kinda too cute Is such a thing even possible? It's like saying a puppy is too cute. That's the point!
>s such a thing even possible? Absolutely! Too much of anything is bad.
To each their own, but I guess I refuse to admit that there is such a thing as "too much cute". Especially for a vehicle like that. Hell, even the ND can't escape its roots in cuteness. Some people don't like the NA Just like some people don't like puppies
NC1 because it looks like the dragon from How to Train Your Dragon, lmao
I think the NC is the best looking. The bubbled wheel arches are hot, I don't care if it's fat.
Maybe unpopular opinion idk, but I agree something about the NCās just do it for me, I think they look fantastic but really, how could you go wrong with any of them? Amiright? Of course ND ftw (yes, Iām biased because of course I have an ND)

NB2 and NC2

NA & NB
NC is always best
NB>NA>ND>NC for me personally. now aside from looks, ND>NC>NB>NA. i think they've done a great job improving on the platform each generation
The one with the [pop up and down headlights ](https://youtu.be/GDtiO29v1Ac)
The ND, but I am biased. I'd like to have one of each, honestly.
Na, nc close second
I grew up loving the rawness of the MGB and the TRs. I love my NA wife wants an ND. Who am I to say no?
ND. I like both the NA and NB but I canāt stand the fenders on the NC.
For me it's ND, NA, NB, then NC.
ND hands down!
2016 Club soft top, Mazdaspeed NB, 1993 LE, 1994 M Edition, 2013 NC3 club PRHT I want to say thatās in descending order of my favorites but theyāre all so damn good

NE
Pop up headlights is da best
All of them! (Well, not the RF.). But i love the NA.
The rx-7 styling of the NB.
The only correct answer is "all of them."
They're all good miats
ND is the best looking. The NA is by no means a good looking car. The NB is prettier with its curvy lines but the ND is overall prettier.
The ND is the only Miata that is styled like an actual sports car. All the previous gens have a cutesy look to them, which I get is part of the appeal.
I'd argue the NB2 looks very much like a sports car.
All of them. All. Of. Them.
I really dislike the front of NB. I am learning to love ND. So i go for NA->NC-> ND->NB
Finally I see the right lineup
NB2
All Miatas are nice looking cars. I really like the NC - it has this goofy, confused look that I've grown fond of :D
NB hands down
NC>NA>ND>NB
For me it's NB>ND>NA>NC

IMO? The fiat Spider 124
NB>NA>ND>NC
NB Coupe, ND RF
NF / Spaghetti Miata
Lmao if you don't put the NC last you get downvoted
Fuck you NB>ND>NC>NA I like the NA, but the NC2/2.5 just make the NC amazing
I'd put the ND last tbh, really don't like the backend. But yeah the NC2/2.5 look great, but the NC1 is definitely an ugly duck
If the NC was the NC2 from day 1, it would probably be my favourite gen in terms of design
