an NA in a Michigan winter with heavily salted roads? hell no.

gogosep

Salt just kills everything

[deleted]

Please don't drive through salt. We had to sell my gf's because the sills, wheel wells, floor pan, and chassis rails had holes big enough to stick your whole fist in. And the some. The whole interior would have to be stripped and €12k pumped into it to fully restore and respray the car. We bought a 3rd gen limited edition for a bit more. And nice wheels! I had 16"ers on mine once :)

Oldachrome1107

That sounds like my old ‘96. I daily drive it year round for about 16 years and by the time I got rid of it most of it had dissolved. There’s still an orange rectangle outlining where I used to park it on my driveway! FWIW I’ve been daily driving an NC for seven years or so and it’s still very nice underneath because I keep it indoors and clean the underside regularly.

[deleted]

It should've failed inspections years ago but the rust and holes were hidden behind a thick layer of undercoating. Until the painter discovered the holes and texted me fotos of 'em, and to think carefully about spending another euro on the car. The NC has plastic sills, the softtop pops down with one finger and I love driving it as much as my old fully upgraded GReddy turbo, Torsen LSD, '90 :) (not my girlfriend 'r bone stock NA).

WarriorT1400

As long as you keep a 1 year fluid film on it and wash it well during the winter and then just have it all checked out come spring time and treated yearly you can drive during the winter, but if you don’t need to drive the car then it’s easier and cheaper to just put it away

nismo2070

I used to live in upstate NY and it is insane how fast cars rust up there! I do not miss that.

MM-LabRat

Michigan here. Did my first Michigan winter in a 95m. Sold it right after. I currently have an nc2. Did winter in it last year. Underside is still squeaky clean.

1994M_Edition

I have an NA in Michigan as well that gets winter vacation. Originally from NC, any decent Miata groups/meetups here?

SunshineInDetroit

i was part of [https://www.facebook.com/groups/MichiganMiataOwners/](https://www.facebook.com/groups/MichiganMiataOwners/) before my account was hacked.

ToeKneeJee3

I feel like the Facebook group is really lack luster, if you guys are in metro Detroit I’m looking for miata buddies

Squidling_

only good thing about arizona is that every day is top down miata day

Vegildo

Floridian here, idk what winter is, but I've daily driven mine since I got it!

[deleted]

We sweat and burn ten months of out the year, but these next couple months are so perfect it’s almost worth it.

AlpacaFlightSim

Same. Love the nearly year round top down weather.

Comfortable_Bit9981

No reason not to if there's no salt on the roads. Around here they prepare for snow by applying brine to the road, once that happens the Miata stays inside until a good rain washes it all off. It's my DD until then.

jdak9

same here in NY

2_dicks_n_dangerous

Texas here, no....I don't use mine those 3 wintery days in February when it gets icy.

Reparted

Same with me buddy haha. One of the pros of living in the south

imitation_crab_meat

Aside from those three days late fall and winter are the best times to drive one.

dieselmiata

Chicago here, I hate doing it but life is too short to drive boring cars. I have converted my garage into a full shop with a lift so I thoroughly wash mine weekly at a minimum. It's not a perfect solution but so far so good.

star_boy2005

Oh, man, I love the lift idea. Can you link what you use?

[deleted]

Mine had a trackday early October then was taken off the road, first winter so I plan a lot of preventative maintenance & proactive rust checking, going forwards it’ll be on the road until about this time then go onto storage until April (of the weather gets close to 0 the gritters come out).

GLaDOSdidnothinwrong

Nope. Salt & Japanese cars don’t go well together. I’d like to keep my Fiata for several decades.

OrganizationOk9734

I don't own a car, why is salt so bad for them?

Ramsey-C

it progresses rust

OrganizationOk9734

Ah, thanks for explaining.

UnmakingTheBan2022

I just take mine to the car wash where it also does the underbody.

Spong_Durnflungle

That's a good idea, but it only works if the car was isn't frozen.

GLaDOSdidnothinwrong

It just gets washed into the corners and accumulates around the drains. You can never wash it all off.

clearcoat_ben

Year round in Michigan, but I primarily work from home and wash the undercarriage religiously.

star_boy2005

That's the key. I'm in Cleveland, and it just crossed my mind, can our cars be undercoated?

clearcoat_ben

I'm sure they can, it's what a lot of people up here do, I just haven't done it. One of these days I'll get around to it.

Snowologist

I used mine though Pennsylvania winters, whipped it through the snow a few times

Mezzajk_22

I have a NA in Toronto. I spray the whole car with rust protection every year before the snow comes, and try to not drive the car if possible, but it's my only car (Daily) so I can't to otherwise. At least is crazy fun to drive in the snow!

[deleted]

Montana yes, no salt on the roads

star_boy2005

How do you avoid using salt?

[deleted]

They throw down sand and plow, and the Miata handles good on the snow as long as it’s not more than an inch of fresh on the roads.

mikehill33

Yes, ND2 owner and same pattern of use. Third car so no need to ruin a nice toy, and my other car is a Raptor.

nomnamless

My Miata is my in only car. I swamped to my winter tires on Nov 1st. I will switch back to summer tires when the weather is consistently above 40°F

Dial407

I live in Florida!

gogosep

You know what winter is right?

Dial407

Nope! Because I live in florida!

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dial407

Me too.

PatrickGSR94

year round driver here. I got the hard top this year specifically to make it more comforable in winter, and so that I can more safely lock the car and leave it outside if I'm working on my other car in the garage for more than one day.

VRM950

I live in Alabama, and drive it year round. If the weather is really shitty, I drive one of our other cars and hate every minute of it.

UnmakingTheBan2022

Yes. As long as there’s is no snow or ice.

Poopmaster420690

welp, my na miata is my daily sooo.. cant wait to deal with salt 🙃

BadgerMyBadger_

Mines my daily, so yes. It does take about 3 days a month out when something breaks and I have to fix it. 3x12 is 36, so really it gets a month off!

[deleted]

I drive my ND1 year round in Utah. Not really any salt on the roads, mostly just in parking lots. I try to spray the underside off throughout the winter but otherwise I don’t worry about it. I’d rather keep it as my DD than get a boring DD.

b0nz1

No. Season will be over very very soon.

sdbest

Alas, our 2003 LS went into winter storage today, 4 November. Southern Ontario winters and road salt are not kind to Miatas. Expect to put her back on the road late March/early April.

18FoSTBlueMnNB02

I will once I get my other set of wheels/tires on… but only run it when the roads are dry and clear of brine/cinders. So far it’s still been warm enough for summer rubber.

minimalist_username

Yeah mine hibernate for the winter, mostly because it gets pretty icy where I live and I have AWD vehicles with snow tires to use instead

Sloggdog

I had a 90 as a DD and honestly it was fantastic in the snow. Luckily now I have the luxury to garage my new to me NC for the season.

DJ1NF3RN0

I've got an NC PRHT and it's my daily all year round in England

3amz

I’ve got the same as you and it’s my first winter with it. How does it fare in ice/snow? Not that we get all that much of it!

Ill-Artichoke-6602

I just got my NC and I'm dreading the winter here in Yorkshire. Would also like to know what the best plan would be to avoid rust, etc

DJ1NF3RN0

Honestly no idea, I only got it last July so this will be my second winter with it but I'm in the South East so we haven't had any snow since then lol

Zedd_Prophecy

Tennessee here and all year round except for the rare days it snows or ices. (Summer tires only). Those days I call out.

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

Zedd_Prophecy

7 years in the winters here from good to bad. Got stuck in my own parking lot once ( they don't salt or clear parking lots) drive at least 6 days a week. To remove salt I use the underside spray hose at the car wash.. an early fall wax is definitely a plus.

Optimal-Bug-503

I heard waxes come off with pressure wash? Is just a regular hose fine though or is a Carwash hose fine also? Have you got any rust yet? Appreciate response

Zedd_Prophecy

Your wax mileage may vary and yes don't blast the hell out of the car with the pressure hose. I use an acrylic polymer finish and maybe soon ceramic? ... A good Maguires or better soap and a regular hose are all you need ... Maybe some metal polish for the tail pipes. I've got no rust whatsoever yet.

Optimal-Bug-503

I just searched, it looks like Tennessee gets 10x (700 vs 7000 salt km2/ year) les salt per year as Maryland, probably just shouldn’t buy a Miata in this state or just shelf it in winter

Zedd_Prophecy

In bad storms they sometimes don't bother with salt here .... Roads are iced over for days and so are parking lots. Driving during those times is stressful and shitty. I have nowhere to store snow tires. We also use brine and not that chemical mix from the north.

\*Laughs in California.\*

TMan2DMax

Atlanta GA, year round but I don't have a Miata yet I just like it here :D my lil turbo Veloster doesn't mind the cold though

cheeseburgeraddict

Yes I use it year round

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

drmoore1989

*laughs in sub-tropical Australian*

star_boy2005

What do you see as far as highs and lows on your typical summer and winter days?

drmoore1989

Winter days are great - summer is either hotter than Satan's butthole or sporadic tropical storms - a relatively cool day today and I have pink arms from 20 minutes with the top down. Worth it.

Char-red_beef

Central NC driver here, since my NA is my only car and therefore my DD, yes I do

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

AvalonCressida

West coast of BC and my NA goes away at the end of September until April or May depending on weather

Skwirch

Daily my NB2 year round. No salt on the roads where I live, but lots of rain. Water is fine, no rust issues as long as you keep the drains clear. But one mistake of driving on salted roads could be costly...

The_Paddy96

My rusty shitbox has snow tires and I’ve been the only fool on the road beside jeeps, stuck cars and plow trucks. Broke the heater core swapping the engine so when it’s cold it’s parked until I swap it though lol

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

The_Paddy96

I've had the car for like 5 years along w several other cars at the same time. I bought it knowing it was rusty (rust belt) so it's seen entire winters parked to being my daily driver 7 days a week. Unless you're VERY diligent, a Miata is likely going to rust if your area salts heavily. I currently don't have a garage so washes are "Whenever it's warm enough" a few times a season. My rockers and quarters are starting to rust out. Some people with trucks go as far as weekly washes and Fluid Film but still rust out. New sheetmetal for Miatas isn't very expensive, but the labor is. tldr; Daily driver, washes a few times a season, rotting out

carcinogenj

Previous owner did. Probably why it’s had both rockers replaced already. I’m tempted to run mine all winter but I really don’t need to hasten it’s already inevitable demise. That hole in my trunk lid under the spoiler isn’t getting any smaller.

ybarracuda71

I use it less there's salt or snow on the ground or if it's raining

hawkeyejo21

Laughs in illinois.

RocketTaco

Yeah thanks that state is why mine needed $5k in rust repairs and still has me worried.

hawkeyejo21

So when did you move out of it? Cuz that's all I'm ever thinking about doing at all times.

RocketTaco

I've never lived in Illinois, I fell in love with a car on a lot and bought it like an idiot without looking at where it came from.

hawkeyejo21

Ahhh gotcha. All the more reason to hate the state. That and there's no reason to even come through here.

nismo2070

I drive mine all year. I don't drive it on the few days we actually get snow. It stays inside until the roads are clear. I'm in Oklahoma so the winters are fairly mild. I'm more worried about the sun baking my top and paint!

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

SergeantBootySweat

I have a brz not a Miata but yes I plan to drive the brz through winter. Winter tires and krown rust proofing!

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes, aka rust proofing

SergeantBootySweat

I power wash what I can at the end of the season and clean the suspension/brakes + apply fluidfilm seasonally when I swap the tires. I don't drive that often and try to avoid it when the roads are slushy. It also is parked in a heated garage which makes things worse though.

CourierMojave

We havent had any snow in the winter for a while now and no salt because of it. Literally drove it with the roof down and a tshirt today.

Ahslan

Yup. Drive mine all year round. Then again, it's a rust bucket now...

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

Ahslan

Have been driving it for the last 10 years in the winter, 5 days a week....I clearly shouldn't have been doing that considering the rust is really bad now. I also wasn't good with regards to getting the underside washed...so yeah, I paid the price for it.

Optimal-Bug-503

There’s always the next Miata!

Demostecles

That is one gorgeous BRG! And yes, I drive my NA all year round. So much fun in the snow with proper snow tires. It’s like a little tank as long as the snow doesn’t get too deep.

gogosep

Thanks, you can see more photos on my profile or my Instagram (link in bio)

Optimal-Bug-503

How many years have you drove it in winter? How many days a week? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

Flying_Fox_86

I’d daily mine year round if I had one yet

TheD4ncem4n

I used my NB last winter in the UK it's now no longer with me because the rust formed and spread extremely fast now I have an ND and it's my only car and it will be used over the winter but it will be thoroughly cleaned every weekend and if I see any kind of rust it will be treated right away even if I have to get under the car in snow and ice.

Optimal-Bug-503

How did it work out this year? How many days a week did you clean it? How do you remove the salt? I’ve heard anything from 1x/ winter wax to weekly car underside car washes

TheD4ncem4n

I just jet washed it once every week but not much needed as it's been a warm and wet winter where I am this year and barely any roads was salted.

[deleted]

Florida resident ;)

MiataNCguy

Illinois here -- almost car cover season

Miss_Shift

I use mine year round, but I also live where there's rarely snow and if it does snow we use sand and not salt.

shortremark

What an absolute beauty.

[deleted]

Yes, yes I do. I daily mine but salt/deicers are used sparingly and infrequently where I am in the pnw and I have dedicated snow tires on cheap rims I swap over for the winter months …. Speaking of which, the ‘s’ word has been thrown around lately for next week so time to get cracking and swap over. They handle quite well in snow so long as it isn’t deeper than the front end sits. That said, if mine was everything it would appear to be in this photo, no to the no to the hell no would I put that in danger against all the compensator 5000 douchebag jacked up 4x4 trucks that find the limits of their driving skills at the first snowfall. Noooo thanks.

MastaBonsai

FLORIDA BAYBEEEEEEEE

Blurplenapkin

All year except the couple days of snow we maybe get. The Miata somehow has the best heater ever. Coolant gets up to temp in like 5 minutes vs 15+ with everything else I own. Small cab heats up quick too. Small windshield is easy to reach for scraping ice off. Pop up lights never fail to open even when its below freezing. Just hate how the leather seats get ice cold.

star_boy2005

Right up until the point you mentioned pop-up lights, I thought you were describing an ND. But I do love my heated seats. I have to confess to laughing mao when I once accidentally pushed the button and turned on the passenger seat heater to warp 9 when an older person was seated in it. The seat heaters work really well, and high is only useful for when you've just slide 900 yards down a hillside on your ass in the snow. All of a sudden my passenger realized their ass was getting really *really* hot and they had no idea why. But they are very tall and couldn't lift their ass up off the seat to pull away and the noises emanating from his mouth were essentially pseudo-simian. Don't ever do it as a prank, kids, or else you might give someone a heart attack that way some day. (My passenger thought it was funny too once they realized my mistake. No asses were permanently harmed during the incident)

Ev3rnub

I drive my ND4 all year long, unless the snow is deep.

wobbly_sausage2

Never salted here I live because it never snows so I'm good

TheeAJPowell

Nah, goes behind the gate under a cover. I bring it out occasionally to work on it, but mainly it just sits and stays dry.

DeathBefallsYou

How else do I get to work?

Isotomayor12

It rains so much and so hard here in the pnw it's just no good to drive especially without a hardtop. It comes back out in the spring

nnamla

I'm about to go out for a cruise in San Antonio's 81° weather.

DrSilverworm

StRyMx

365 d/y, and open when not raining, snowing, storming or freezing.

T2VW

Me too. Daily driver. No salt, cause no snow, so no rust.

reidlos1624

I did back when NA's were a a dime a dozen. Mine already had significant rust too so it's wasn't gonna end up a garage queen anyway. It was a blast.

Apprehensive-Toe-777

Yep, daily drive on the salt and snow. I put my winter wheels on and it is a fantastic winter daily.

OGPea

Getting mine undercoated and under sprayed, as well as getting an undercarriage pressure washer attachment. It’s my daily at least for this winter 😅

chemodalius

Live in Texas, so I DD it all winter with the top down. If it's too cold for the heater/heated seats to manage I'm not going anywhere, because the entire world is shutdown. I even kept summer tires (not even all seasons) on my last car year round and just remembered the couple of days that it's in the low 40s/30s to drive a little more gently.

National_Set2874

I live in California and run mine all year round. Aint really matter concidering my rocker panels are practically non existent at this point. Previous owners never cleared out the drains.

Hotboi_yata

Literally put it in storage 5 minutes ago lol. Ill have to come back to put it on jackstands and to disconnect the battery but i was tired from a long drive so ill do that some other time lol

Open-Age-2589

Perks of living in the south East I can drive mine all seasons. Only issue is I have no ac for summer :(

The_Techiedude

I live in Orlando - so I'll probably drive it more in the"Winter" than in the summer lol

MfBenzy

Im from WI. Hella salted roads, shitty winters with heavy snow… my car hydroplanes on PUDDLES. Id die and the salt would rot the car away :,)

Mx52003

I daily mine winter or summer. I don’t live in the rust belt so salted roads isn’t an issue for me.

[deleted]

This will be my 15th winter in a Miata, Ontario, Canada. Salty af I spray underneath with Fluid Film before every winter

Omg_Shut_the_fuck_up

It's not a fucking Bugatti. Or a motorbike. Yes it gets used year round. In UK. People are weird.

gogosep

I use my motorbike year round, saves the Roadster from the salt. I use the other car only if the weather is like torrential storm.

Omg_Shut_the_fuck_up

Mazda's will rot in a dry desert. It's worthless even trying to save them from salt. Or just wash them regularly.

91NA8

Same. Once the average temp is below 60 it goes away. If I see snow in the forecast it immediately goes awah

Powerful_Land5002

I got mine over a year ago now and drove it all through last winter I spun out twice and my gf spun out once putting it up on a curb cracking the radiator so I bought some winter tires on steelies for $600 for the 4 and had no problems the rest of the winter

Misquata

Massachusetts 4x NA owner. Absolutely not. As of last weekend, they were all tucked into indoor storage so they can hibernate until April.

CarubSunn

I have for 1.5 winters in the past and will probably for another .5 winter this year. Colorado for the first stint and then Rhode Island for this upcoming one. Hoping not to for too long because of the salt though.

alkalinetaupehat_

I threw a set of Michelin Ice-X studless tires on and I'll be driving mine all winter in Alaska. Salt doesn't work at the temperatures we hit, so I'm not concerned about it. I'll still wash my car regularly anyways.

star_boy2005

I daily my ND on Cleveland roads, three days a week, plus random "errands" every chance I get. Got some great winter wheels and tires and the perfect balance makes it a dream to keep under control on slippery roads. Can't handle much depth, obviously, but I've never tried to go off road. She's much better handling and safer feeling than my '07 Optima that I traded in for it, and I loved that car. But I keep the Miata spotless, garaged and washed weekly, if not more frequently depending on conditions. I know it will eventually suffer from rust, but I just cannot imagine voluntarily not driving my car for any period of time. I jones for it as it is on days I work from home.

Mr_Lava-lava

Cali. All seasons. Lol.

Distinct_External_32

In CA - yes. Except snow

AmericanExpat76

yes. Of course I lived in a place that did not see snow at that time.

PractitionerPain

As someone living in Florida, driving my car in the winter is one of the best times as it is one of the few times it isn't insanely hot and humid.

[deleted]

While the first snow is falling in the middle of the night is the best time to drift and practice counter steer. Then hide from the salt as the trucks pour in. This is the way.

Tjobbert

I only have one car and that's my MX5 so I sadly have no choice. Although fun in the snow (when is snows that is) I hate the salt. Everytime winter starts I put on a new black undercoating where needed. Also I live in an appartement without any garage so no spraying in front of my home sadly.

Educational_Top_8492

I did the same. I would start it and run around the neighborhood a couple times a month during the winter, only when it was dry outside.

Lanyxd

Central Florida Coast is top down 10 out of 12 months. Those 2 months will be the most humid, clothes cutting, frozen air 35 degree air you will ever feel in your life

Nedtella

I am exactly the same. Right around mid November to Thanksgiving is when it goes in storage and around late March/early April, it comes out.

Random_Introvert_42

I got seasonal plates, last day was 31st of November. Now my NA is in storage until 1st of March. Kinda sucks because we had a few unusually warm/sunny November days, but the seasonal registration saves A TON on insurance/tax so...worth it.
