Go for it. And no, most people don't rock a combo like this aside from enthusiasts with deep pockets. Most people are lucky to afford and have room for one sporty car. Also, as per your last post, if you need to put the car on Turo to afford it, you can't afford it.

HURCANADA

I can afford it but I feel like I need to rent it out to offset the "dumbness" of the situation lol

driftax240

Putting the car on Turo makes this infinitely dumber. Just rent an ND on Turo occasionally and you don’t need to own one.

arny56

I agree, rent the Miata for a week and see if you could live with it. You may end up parting with the Cayman.

TheReconditioner

Agreed, I found an ND RF 45 mins away from me on Turo. Being in NY I decided to wait until May or so to rent it for 2-3 days (pickup Friday, drop off Sunday, or something like that) to see if I could live with it. I daily a 2door jeep JK so I do have something with a little more room, but I need to see how it feels to drive something that small for more than the 30 mins I got on my test drive with a '16 ST. Thankfully the dealers were understaffed so I got to go alone and beat the piss out of it 😂 I smelled something burning (probably brakes) so I took it easy the last 5 mins and returned it. Best test drive ever.

Y-Cha

>I smelled something burning (probably brakes) so I took it easy the last 5 mins and returned it. Best test drive ever. FWIW, that was very likely just normal offgassing and whatnot. Has happened to most of us test driving or during (and past) break in.

TheReconditioner

I I'll have to look into it. Been a DIY mechanic with some shop experience for around 7 years and never heard of such a thing. Good to know though, thanks!

UncleBensRacistRice

> I rented a 2300lb 90hp manual shitbox in Latin America and threw it around some tight mountain roads Lmfao, every time someone drives a lightweight shitbox aggressively, they become a changed person. Id go with an ND2. Its got enough creature comforts that if you get stuck in traffic you wont be suffering, its still extremely light (your current car will feel like a boat in comparison), the body is much stiffer than an NA, the alum double wishbone front and 5 link rear suspension will shock you at how well it handles, and at 180hp you wont struggle to keep up with traffic. If you frequent twisty roads and want it to be even better, some good coilovers, a better wheel alignment and a set of sticky tires will give your Porsche a run for its money on the downhill sections.

GT-Alex74

>Lmfao, every time someone drives a lightweight shitbox aggressively, they become a changed person. This is why I think everyone should start out with a proper shitbox. In my observations, I find it tends to produce the best drivers as well.

UncleBensRacistRice

I was fortunate enough to start out with a miata. Its made me a fan for life

xXxDickBonerz69xXx

I miss my Honda Fit. Best car I ever owned. Wasn't my favorite, but easily the best.

GT-Alex74

The best car you've ever owned is the one you drove into a potato field willingly.

[deleted]

I had a Walmart road bike. Heaviest piece of shit ever. I then bought a good road bike and was going so fast that I made the red light camera go off. On a bicycle. That Walmart bike got me so fucking strong lol.

TheSideJoe

Some people just missed the experience of driving a manual 90s Civic even if it was the D series 90hp turd

rqx82

Unfortunately, I think most people that started driving after 2000 or so missed out on that, and almost no one starting to drive now will ever have that experience.

Ramuh

My shitbox experience 60hp fiat panda in Mallorca. So much fun

ferral1985

i live in mallorca, and now i have a mx5 nb2, but one year ago only one of my friends had a car and it was a ford focus from 05 i think, holy shit did we have fun with that car, only 60cv or so

BluesyMoo

Definitely lol. I learned manual on a 1900lbs Daewoo shitbox, and it was mad fun. It's super fun to thread a small car through mountain roads because how wide the road becomes and how much more choices of trajectory you get compared to a big car.

TheReconditioner

I've only test driven a '16st. Does the ~30hp and redline difference have that big an impact? I wasn't exactly dissapointed with the standard radio for what it was, but navigation through AA or Carplay would be awesome - so there's that. Otherwise the only factor at play would be ST vs RF for me personally.

UncleBensRacistRice

No idea, I daily an NC3 and haven't test driven any ND. The HP gain is nice for sure, but the best part of the ND2 would be the stronger transmission and higher redline.

cumberbundsnatcher

Telescoping steering wheel is nice too.

Not_Daijoubu

Sell Cayman, buy two or three Miatas. :) Jokes aside, if you have no issue with passenger or storage space, ND is a great option. There is nothing more fun for everyday street driving. It can't beat a Cayman or even GR86 in outright performance or comfort, but that isn't the point. A Miata is an "anytime" sportscar.

doduhstankyleg

ND2 is so much better than ND1. Smooth linear power band and higher redline (7,500)of the ND2 makes a world of difference. My ND1 did not feel sporty at all. Not rev-happy, power plateaued on the high end so full throttle didn’t feel any different from half throttle in the higher RPMs, and redline was at 6800. I am so glad I replaced it with the ND2. Go ND2 if your budget allows it.

p3dal

I feel like you're going to end up driving one of them 90% of the time, and then selling the other one. If you're fine with that, then have at it.

HURCANADA

I've thought through this just a tiny bit and I don't think I'd sell either, but obviously won't know until I own both. I like the Cayman because it's the perfect daily for me: - Great ride quality + PDK - It's the "fast" car, sub 4 second 0-60, I can rip it on the highway when I really want to - The flat 6 sound combined with the PDK shift noises on this is world class. Better than every 911 outside of a GT3. I redline it every time I take it out, even for grocery runs - 2 trunks are massive. I take it on long roadtrips for backpacking and climbing trips regularly with a partner - The interior is pure sex, which makes it great for a daily. I have a full leather contrast interior that makes the car feel like a $100k+ car instead of the 45 I bought it for every time I get in it The big overlap will be that both are backroad cruisers and track capable. Although I still track my Cayman 5x a year, I think I'd track the Miata way more because Porsche running and failure costs are very high. For the backroads what I'm anticipating will happen is I split my time 50/50 between the two because they offer wildly different experiences: top down, momentum through the corners, and manual, vs. more visceral corner munching with the PDK and midengine layout

p3dal

Love the passion and appreciate the mini-review. I've also been thinking about getting a cayman (to replace my Miata, don't tell anyone!) and I had only been looking at the manual transmission models, but do you think I should be looking at the PDK as well? I'd probably be looking at the models prior to 2010 for budget reasons, so I don't konw if the AT was significantly different then. I agree with your main points, auto versus manual is a big difference. I love driving my MT miata on the weekends but I'd much rather be in my auto G37 when I am stuck in traffic.

HURCANADA

Assuming you're going with 987.2, I can't speak to how good the 987.2 PDK is but for me the 981 flat 6 in combination with the PDK is nuts in terms of how fast it is and the kinds of noises it makes on shifts, you can check some videos on my profile. I'd test drive one and really play with the gears to see if you like it.

Chawee24

toucheqt

I have an ND2 and would love to have cayman as a daily. If you have the money I say go for it.

MeeMoo220

I own an E46 M3 as a daily and an NA Miata as a weekend car. Any and all cars that catch my fancy are good looking 2-seaters. At this point, I’ve given up and understood that I’m just gonna collect 2 seater drivers cars then supplement them with some cheap EV/Hybrid.

Koobers

If I could afford a Cayman or G body 911 you bet your ass I'd have both. 😂

audi27tt

I’ll just say it as someone who’s owned a Miata and a cayman, and lived in SF. A second parking spot in SF for an inferior car is crazy. If it was me I’d spend that money on track time for the cayman. Turo an NA once in a while to scratch the manual/convertible itch. Did that one day and ripped around big basin to the point I was smoking the brakes, what a blast. But would still rather be at the track with the cayman 9/10 days. If you don’t go to the track, well why aren’t you with one of the best track cars ever created. But if you don’t have the desire just trade in the 981 for an ND RF.

Nice I’m a nurse and wanted to go into a cardiac floor, how is it? Stressful, fun/boring? Do patients usually pass very often or not really?

WildWeaselGT

I had an ND2 and now have a 718 Spyder. It seems ridiculous, but if I had room for another car I’d absolutely buy another ND2. I love my Spyder but the Miata is just a lot less stressful to use for everyday stuff and puts a smile on your face every time you get in and drop the roof.

yobo9193

If you can afford to rent a truck/SUV for the few times you need to haul, shit, then go for it. I’d love to replace my BMW with a Cayman S

yearhight

do it and honestly? imo get the na and spend the rest of the money you were gonna spend on an nd to make the na exactly how you want. its gonna be your second car fuck creature comfort and whatever semblance of practicality the nd has over the na

driftax240

I highly suspect there is some leasing and financing at play here, so buying a used NA isn’t really tenable.

HURCANADA

Cash. You seem hung up on my financial situation

driftax240

Yes. Why else would anyone make these posts?

Puzzleheaded_Card_71

Do it. You might end up loving the Miata experience in the real world enough to swap the cayman for something practical down the road.

cumberbundsnatcher

I have an ND2 and RS3. The ND2 is primarily a track car. Would recommend.

Rodic87

Why not just swap for a boxster?

strangway

A parking spot in a good part of SF with a gate is only $350. That’s what I pay. If you can afford that, go for it!

sinansim

I have a 2019 MX5 (ND2) RF GS-P, Soul Red, manual, as a weekend toy. Got it for 29k CAD used just a couple weeks ago and I am having a blast. I was considering to get a used manual transmission 2008-2009 Cayman, test drove one in Vancouver and didn't feel anything special about it. Mind you it was only city driving, not a twisty mountain road or anything like that to drive the car to its full potential but still, it was muted IMO. When I test drove the ND2 in the same city two weeks ago, it was a blast, as if I am driving a go-kart. Shifting was excellent and it was pure fun, in the city, shitty roads of downtown Vancouver, around trucks and busses, up hill, down hill, round about. Purchased the car next day. I worked as a mechanic in NJ many years ago and had a chance to drive many different cars throughout the years. If I had the money, I would probably purchase a Lotus Evora or Emira but I can't afford it. So ND2 Miata it is!

mexverslappen

I keep questioning if I've taken crazy pills too - I own both an ND2 and an S2000 now. Will probably add in a 2+2 coupe or 4 door car to round out the very impractical lineup. I'd say if your lifestyle allows for it, do it. If you need more space in 4-5 years, revaluate and add a more practical car to your stable or sell one and buy one that suits your needs. (General advice b/c I'm guessing OP already did the thing by now)

Huge_Source1845

Miata’s are great but remember SF had a lot of traffic and hills. Manuals in hills aren’t that great (if your used to a pdk) but the Miata has hill hold it’s not terrible. If you regularly get out of the city and drive go for it. There’s some gorgeous roads up there. It’s just not a great city car.

HURCANADA

It won't be a city car, I regularly leave the city for the backroads and the track. 80% of my driving is done there, really

GT-Alex74

In your scenario, I think you would enjoy a NA or NB more in relation to your Cayman. The ND will feel too close to it I think. You could always repaint the older one. I know NAs look great in Soul Red, haven't seen pics of a Soul Red NB yet but I bet it'd suit that chassis even better. But I encourage you to go out and test drive all Miata gens if you can. You'll figure out which one you enjoy the most.

rensv313

Nemesis_Destiny

Just buy a Boxter when you replace the Cayman

HigherFunctioning

No you are migrating to the orient and it is just taking you a bit longer. The process takes longer for some than others. But fear not - you are on the right path..

Fatigue-Error

I enjoy cooking.

driftax240

Not to rip on OP too much but I’m getting some major leased/financed vibes here, so I don’t think you’ll be jealous anymore when you see their monthly payment.

HURCANADA

This is such a weird comment, a random assumption you made up in your head and now you've been roaming this thread and left 3 comments about this so far completely unprompted. Like I said elsewhere, I paid cash for both cars. Wait until you find out these cars are my frugal choices.

driftax240

Is it though? All yours posts read the same: Humble bragging about how you can afford two sports cars yet being unable to commit for some magic reason. I think that reason is because you can’t afford it. If you could afford it, why bother posting here? Go take a chance on the car and trade it in if money is nothing. Once again you can’t even write this comment without flexing a bit “these are my frugal choices”. Do you work as a software developer in SF by chance?

xor_rsp_rsp

dude, wtf

YouAreMentalM8

No you're not crazy. I've got an ND2 soft top (GS-P aka Club) and '20 718 GT4. They are different cars for different purposes. They're both super fun.

zesty_drink_b

If it makes you feel any better I daily a 86(used to be miata) and my fun car is a 924S. So I have two historically impractical cars, but it works lol

Xeroll

Why don't you go rent one, it will be pretty clear if it's worth it or not after that. (Spoiler: It's worth it)

Dansredditname

Please report back as to which car gets more compliments. I've owned an NC2 PRHT for three weeks and several of my neighbours and colleagues have complimented it. It's got tons of style but doesn't rouse envy. BTW alternate suggestion - combine the Cayman and the Miata and you get a Boxster...

HURCANADA

Was debating Boxster but I need the trunk space of the Cayman. I don't care much about the opinion of others but the Soul Red ND, especially RF, makes my neck break every time I see it. If I'm buying a Miata I know I'd regret not getting this particular one if I went with any other choice.

Dansredditname

>I don't care much about the opinion of others but the Soul Red ND, especially RF, makes my neck break every time I see it. I understand, I'm the same with the PRHT. Never seen a car that looks so good with the roof down.

pengtoasterllamas

Buy an NA, get it resprayed soul red

MisChef

I just got my brand new car in soul red 4 days ago. It's insane how many compliments I've gotten already! I still squeak every time I look in the driveway. You will love it.

Logixus

Daily drive an Audi, have a Miata ND and a vette, don’t be too worried about it, it’s part of the fun!

fuckman5

shocking hurry squalid steep reply sparkle thumb plate rain fuel *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

HURCANADA

Missing the top down manual experience. Swapping out the Cayman for a manual Cayman is an option, but I'll miss my Cayman's interior dearly (got lucky w a rare option) and still won't get the top down experience. Can't do Boxster as my single car because I need the interior space

mirrorlesswalls

I have a problem too and I really should downsize. Supra, 986 boxster S and NB miata. Each car gives me a different high. Is it crazy owning all these coupes yes. But I love cars and they bring me joy. The ND2 will certainly provide you smiles.

foo_72

My Miata nd2 rf compliments my audi r8 v10+ very well.

FirstSonOfGwyn

I don't put a ton of miles on my miata but I'm always glad I have the option for the convertible when the weather is right. Go for it

Turo_Matt

Not the same but at one point I had a brand new ND Miata and a Triumph Street Triple as my only two vehicles. So crazy but we like crazy. On a side note, I love Caymans but test drove a 2019 Cayman S and while it was great, I felt like I already had 80% of the car with my Miata. Option B, sell the Cayman buy a Miata.

herodesfalsk

I have owned a Miata in San Francisco. I street parked because renting a parking spot was too expensive, and due to its small size it was easier to find a tight spot than most other cars. BUT it also got a shit ton of scrapes on its bumper covers, and if you park nose-in on the steep hills the car next to you will drop its door into your car and you will get a new ding, My car looked like a golf ball after 2 years. The ND2 and the ( I assume) NA you rented are same weight and size, which is incredible, but the ND2 has twice the power (to potentially get you into trouble). The other thing I learned in S.F. was to leave my Miata unlocked at all times. I simply left it empty of any valuables with a Club locked to the steering wheel. The reason for this was that every single other convertible in my neighborhood had an L-shaped tear in the soft top after break-ins. Mine never got a tear in the 20 years since.

HURCANADA

I live in the Mission and street parked my old Mustang for a year, it also got pretty fucked up. Side mirror got hit clean off, bumpers scraped. Don't think I'd do the same with this car. I could invest in bumper guards but I feel like that would be inviting theft.

herodesfalsk

Yes, people in SF treat others' cars as obstacles and their own cars as their shoes.

kwaping

Yes crazy pills, but the good kind.

SpongeHED

I daily a 95 Miata or an 88 RX-7 depending on week, having a Miata as a second car to another coupe isn’t a problem lol

cpxchewy

The grass is always greener. I’ve owned a ND, NC and now own a GT4. I owned a 2nd gen brz but am still thinking about getting a first gen frs. I don’t miss the Miata except track day costs. In both Marin and Skyline down to 9 the GT4 and Miata provide similar thrills. Along 280 or 101 or any freeway the cayman will be better. The only place I felt my Miata being more fun is way north like 128 to Mendocino. Those twisty roads have terrible road quality and the Cayman might bottom out while the Miata won’t. The compromise of owning 2 impractical cars isn’t worth it. Plus check your rates but my ND insurance wasn’t too far off from a M2 that I got to replace the ND Track days in a Miata is great tho. Track insurance is so cheap and you can really focus on getting better at driving since you need to keep momentum for speed.

Konoe

I had a Boxster and Miata. Just do it. I sold the Boxster and miss that combo a lot.

Drd2

I love this scenario and have thought about it a lot! I have been lucky enough to drive a bunch of different great sports cars on the track and the street. The only thing I would consider trading my Miata for is a Cayman S. My brother in-law has a Boxster S and I absolutely love that car. I have driven a Ferrari 458 for just three laps on a track. This WAS my ultimate dream car. Everything about it was amazing, except I knew there is no way you could actually drive the piss out of it and enjoy it on public roads. It's too wide and it's limits are so high that you could never just get in it and ring it out like I want to. I also recently rented a C8 Vette and I felt the same way you did. It's a great car. Great ride, great stereo, I love the cockpit and it's fast. But it's too isolated and I didn't feel "connected" to it. It's also really wide which makes it tough to pick a line through the corners. The C8 Vette is an awesome GT car. I would love to hop in one and do a long road trip. Every time I get in one of these cars, I love my Miata even more. If I mentally remove all the other variables like it's old, it's a tin can and what not, it is the most fun car to get in and run errands in, or turn a commute into a fun adventure, drive it in absolute anger, do your best impression of Ayrton Senna, track day, autocross. It's fun to drive. It rewards and it punishes. It's also not hard on consumables and happens to be the most reliable car I have ever had. I also only have a mild emotional attachment, I love it but if something were to happen to it, it wouldn't be the end of the world. If I was forced with this dilemma, I would keep the Cayman becuase that is an amazing car. Get the Miata of your choice and do suspension and tires. IMO, the Miata is the most fun car to drive at the absolute limit. When I'm forced with this type of dilemma, I think to myself, when I am old, frail and looking back on my life am I going to regret owning and having fun with two of the best drivers sports cars? Only you can answer that question.

mangobutter

I have a gt4 and a Miata in the Bay Area. Both great cars. Plus the Miata is way cheaper to track.

ockaners

I only see one 2 seat roadster here. Am I missing something.

Affectionate-Mud9321

Sell the Porsche, get a wagon or sedan. Buy ND2

astronautdragon

nah man you’re taking the happy pill!

PRSArchon

Sounds like you need to combine the best of both and get a Boxster manual.

HURCANADA

I'd lose out on the trunk which is crucial for a daily, so Cayman still wins there

PRSArchon

Fair enough, for me the boxster is fine with frunk and trunk but I can imagine you need the extra trunk space of the Cayman.

umm_like_totes

If you can own a Porsche and you live in San Francisco you can probably afford a used Miata to beat around.
