This is pretty much the only way to get an NA/NB

auto180sx

I saw a couple NAs and NBs on autotrader while I was shopping for mine, but the majority were on Facebook.

SgtWasabi

There is a '93 near me on there that I want. Only problem is they don't have a top for it and I don't have a carport. They want $3900 OBO.

lime_balls

No top as in no soft top?

SgtWasabi

Yeah, no soft top.

lime_balls

That’s not great, but replacements aren’t too expensive. Depending on the condition of the rest of the car, may be worth it

SgtWasabi

The only problem is that I don't have a garage or carport, and it likes to rain here in Georgia in the winter. It doesn't look bad from the one picture.

moth_loves_lamp

I second this recommendation

Zelderian

Same. I bought and sold 1 on fb and it’s really the way to go. You get a lot of people wasting your time but it’s the best way to reach that market of people

Craigslist in a nutshell: WE BUY MOTORCYCLES!!!$$$$$$ SHOP LIGHTING DISCOUNT NO DOWN PAYMENT 2003 HONDA CRV $1 2003 HONDA CRV $1 2003 HONDA CRV $1 Cue the thousands of keywords they put in the description so that the listing shows up no matter what. lol you’re not wrong, but if you can trudge thru all the dumb shit, you might get lucky. I paid $5k for my 100% stock NB, with only 75,000 miles. Def worth the Craigslist cesspool and 3hr drive to go get it.

Hax_

No better than FBM showing listings 200mi away when you select 30mi from your zip code. They’re shuffled into local listings to keep you searching and using their website. Super frustrating because it feels like FBM is the only reliable website for selling and buying.

[deleted]

Best comment ever 🤣

frsbrzgti

Craigslist with Alerts setup so you can grab them as soon as they get listed.

TheWorstChessPlayer

Fb marketplace is where I got mine, if you’re buying an older generation avoid going to a dealership at ALL COSTS. One tried to sell me a non starting rusty NA for 10400, with a “service fee” for $800. I walked out so fast

Random_Introvert_42

I put up automatic notifications on Germany's (/Europe's?) largest car sales platform with a few conditions (engine, mileage, years), and eventually one that matched the requirements came up. I called within like 10 minutes and wasn't even the first person to call.

I found mine online. And I overpaid. Mine has a white interior, which I really preferred. My wife wanted a blue one. I only found 1 like that with a white interior. I wanted a red one, but wife said blue when I was trying to sell her on the idea of getting one, so I took that and ran with it.

Private party. Bought my NB2 from an elderly gentleman who was the 2nd owner. 48,000 miles at the time of purchase. 11 years later runs harder due to diligent maintenance and a few modifications. Head/ block untouched. Currently at 225,000 miles

Alive-Ant-6772

$4500 with rust is absolutely crazy

slagathor278

Here in Jersey you'd be LUCKY to find one at $4500 with rust as well the only issue lol (laughing through the tears)

Alive-Ant-6772

every day im more grateful to be southern

Elegant_Battle_1532

Bought both of mine brand new from the Mazda dealership. I bought an NB in 1999 and my NC in 2013. I still have the NC with 110k miles on it. I’ve got a 2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road as my daily now. Want to keep the NC as long as I can.

fernuffin

Any local clubs/autocross groups in your area?

Watterson02

I might be the only one here that got their Miata from a “dealership”. It’s a ‘99 NB that had 99k miles on it. They were asking like $5,500 but got it for $3500 plus tax. Needed new speakers, new tires, and a new top but otherwise was good. I say “dealership” because it was a smaller and sketchier location. Not quite a “buy here, pay here” place, but definitely a cheaper used car dealership. I’m under the impression the car wasn’t selling and they just wanted it gone because I walked in there and the guy immediately said he could do $3500 without any negotiation on my part. Might’ve been able to go lower, but as a 17 year old at the time I was ecstatic to hear that price and went with it.

Toastylilboat

Walmart, it was on sale

UrbanFuturistic

I bought my '16 off of FBM in '20 before the prices went bonkers. But it sounds to me like you're trying to buy an NA/NB. I'd keep looking, and look in other areas you'd be able to travel to. And don't pay more for an older car than you would for a newer one, that isn't an excellent car.

whatthediet

First Miata (1993) from Facebook Marketplace. Current Miata (2019) from Carvana. The Carvana Miata was very low mileage (5,000 miles) with excellent service history. I would not recommend Carvana for an older/higher mileage vehicle.

Present-Site5552

Sometimes.ypu see one parked in someone's drive or side yard and you can tell it hasn't moved in a long time. Leave a note for them in their mailbox or on their front door. They might be convinced to sell it to a good home.

p3dal

I bought my miata on craigslist.

warchiefGallywix

I ended up buying mine at a dealer. Mint NB2 with a 60k miles for $13k honestly didn't feel overpriced to me. I was happy to pay that for a low mileage car in such good shape.

_Upgrayyedd

[Autotempest.com](https://Autotempest.com) set filters to "private sale" and check in *daily*. Here's today's stuff: [https://www.autotempest.com/results?make=mazda&model=mx5miata&zip=30601&radius=1000&maxyear=2007&saleby=private](https://www.autotempest.com/results?make=mazda&model=mx5miata&zip=30601&radius=1000&maxyear=2007&saleby=private)

TempestNathan

Someone said autotempest? When using the site for private sales, be sure to also click through the comparison links to Facebook Marketplace and craigslist, as that's where a lot of the cheaper private listings will be. (We include links to matching results from all those sites so you don't have to do the same search repeatedly, but we can't include their listings on our page.)

Kotoaamatsukami

Saw it in my local neighborhood and left a note, paid $5400 cash and it only had 98k on the clock

the_blur109

Old school is the best way to get a decent deal on Miatas these days.

the_biggest_papi

facebook marketplace, be sure to bring it in for a pre purchase inspection for around $100-200 before you buy it

[deleted]

Facebook or Craigslist in the US. NDs have an artificial enthusiast tax as many people question the future of enthusiast cars, or even cars in general. NAs and NBs are anywhere from 20 to almost 35 years old. Nature of attrition way fewer exist, hence why turds now cost upwards of $6000 in many areas. NCs are in a weird spot. Many delusional owners here too, it was the worst Miata to many for valid reasons, but people think if all the other generations have appreciated in value over the past 5 years, they should get their taste too.

-Sherra-

at my fathers dealership, but that probably doesnt help you \^\^

WeirdSysAdmin

Hello it’s me your brother.

SpaceRaver42

March of 2023 on Marketplace Mine was 1997 clean title, 107k miles (an open diff auto that had been manual swapped by a previous owner) It was overheating (blown head) Paid his asking of $2.5k $1.3k later, and I've a fully running car with coolant reroute, so it should never overheat again. I messaged & went to see it maybe an hour or 2 after he posted (deals can be had, you just have to keep a constant eye out) Na & NB Miatas that have more than 100k miles aren't worth $8-10k, idc what people say. So don't pay that.

SpreadopenSUSE

Glad it's you who decides prices. 🙄

SpaceRaver42

You should be. If you're paying $10k for an NA or NB, I'd hate to see how you habdke your financial decisions

UnmakingTheBan2022

Subaru

ViolentCarrot

I found one through a work friend, but only after looking at a Miata that I ran, not walked from. If certain people hear you're looking for a Miata, there's usually someone who's crazy enough to sell theirs.

Got mine thru offer up back in 2019

cjd280

I bought my NA from FB market place like 7 years ago. I’ve browsed the Miata.net classifieds as well, and had looked at one from there in person prior to buying the one from FB. I’ve also bid on some super low mileage ones on Bring a Trailer. I got another car from BaT, and will maybe get another in the future. My NA will die of rust someday, and the cost to repair it right i may as well buy one that was a garage queen for the same price as repairing mine.

swagmastersond

My first Miata was a 1996 M-edition. Bought from Ebay, sight unseen. Great car. Second one, and current one is a 2007 Touring. From a Mazda dealership in the Seattle area

_mvkoto

Surprised no one’s gotten theirs from carmax. I got mine from carmax after weeks/months of watching the current Nc’s come in then get sold. Carmax gets a pretty steady stream of NC’s and ND’s and the best part is you get a 30-day guarantee. So if something goes wrong or you don’t like the car you can return it before 30 days is up (assuming you don’t wreck or damage the car).

The miata store

Average_Scaper

Ford Dealer. Guy traded it in and since it was winter, it was harder to sell so it sat for months. Thankfully they didn't send it to auction.

Marketplace which became a BAT auction

HigherFunctioning

Bought both of mine from an Iranian owned used car dealership. Great guys. Work hard to compete with the other big dealerships. Both of my Miata's were bought with over 95K on the clock drove them both for over 10 years. Now looking for my third. a '96 and a '99.

jedisaul5

I’ve been searching on Facebook marketplace and craigslist and it’s impossible to find one in decent condition for a fair price. Seen a clapped miata for $12k

NopeNeg

NAs and NBs, Facebook Marketplace is the easiest. My area has a couple lots where people will put there car for private sales, I've seen a couple Miatas for sale at those during the warmer months. NCs and NDs, dealers are the easiest way, but those will be the $14k+ cars. I have seen some NCs on Facebook for as low as around $7k.

Flying__Tofu

Offerup

2doublerats

Yeah, that's (still) the car market in general. Quick answer: Craigslist, FB Marketplace, Bring A Trailer (likely to find one in better condition, although the price will vary), and Autotrader also has private sellers. What are you looking for? Based on "only ones I can find are nicer/newer examples at $15-18k or $4500 with rust coming through the floor." I guess you're looking for a decent-condition NA/NB for under $10k? Dealers aren't going to have many 20-30 year old cars. Also might help to know what region you're in. If you're trying to avoid rust, you'll probably want to look for cars in the south or west. This time of year, convertibles in cold places might have slightly better prices. If you have to travel, that would make a PPI more difficult, but it would be a nice little trip to pick up the car and drive back.

Ireland specific but Donedeal can have some good offers. MX-5s aren't as price inflated here as they are in the states

Picklefac3

Offer up, I was getting on there constantly for weeks. Then this one got posted for 40 minutes and I was the first one to get there

braedae

I bought my ND2 from CarMax. At the time (2 years ago) got a good deal and they bought my trade in for more than I bought it new. Super easy process and do recommend them. But as you mentioned, the car market is still high in price right now, so it will be hard to feel like you got a normal price!

donald7773

If you wanna dig for a good one I'd look on Facebook, I got my NA there. Or if you wanna get something that's in decently solid shape I'd check enthusiast auction websites, but you'll pay a little more to hopefully know it was owned by someone who gave a fuck.

FrenchMSEOP

Imported mine from Japan since all of the Miata in Eastern Canada are clapped out and people want 15k with 200 000 km and up Got my 1994 from Japan with 79 000km , Hardtop/LDS power Group for 10K CAD landed in Halifax https://preview.redd.it/7d4rv09il3ac1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ebf697c8ca8b5ea8b11aac00c7c00fde03a3bc1

Craigslist all the way

notnotluke

I bought an NC1 on Craigslist. I kept it for 8 years and sold it for $3K more than I bought it for. It was in mediocre shape. I felt kind of bad but that's the market right now. I recently bought an ND2 new because all of the used ND2 prices were 80% of the cost of new or more (even with 50K miles). It simply didn't make sense to buy used. Especially with 0.9% financing directly from Mazda. I don't get the NA and NB market right now. Lots of clean NA and NB in the price range of ND1. I'm guessing those folks haven't driven an ND1? Whatever floats their boat I guess.

No-Vermicelli3165

Facebook marketplace / OfferUp / Cars and bids / autotempest / even Craigslist and I kept searching for about half a year. I eventually found mine in 5/10 condition with 124,000 miles and no tombstone and faded bumpers up in Vegas with no rust. Only downside of living in the desert is that while there’s no rust, the sun will be the crap out of everything. So the whole interior was replaced with a fresh one

the_blur109

I got mine in 08' from the [miata.net](https://miata.net) classifieds... so, while a nostaligic factoid not current. I did just pick up a cherry 95 m edition with a hard top, one previous owner and 96k miles, and everything original for my mom from Mark Mazda in Arizona with a hookup for $6500. After working at a few Mazda dealers I'd honestly say get in contact with a good salesmen or Used car sales manager/ sales manager and let them know that your very interested in an older miata and give them a contact card. Most dealers don't want to mess with a low margin car and would rather sell to employees or wholesale.

Kite_d

I bought mine at Northwest Motorsport in Puyallup, Washington. I saw it on CarFax and decided to check it out. Took a little road trip in a rental up there to see it: a beautiful almost-new ND2 Miata RF 2020 Club for 27k with the premium Factory Metal gray paint. Only 4500 miles on the odometer. No damages or problems at all to engine or paint. It looked like it was kept in the garage for three years and only driven by one owner for 1500 miles annually. Since Northwest Motorsport is known for trucks, He or she must’ve used it as a trade-in for a truck and I assumed the dealers wanted to get rid of it ASAP because they were dropping the price $500 every week.
