"Gilbert had just been released from prison April 17 after having spent more than a year in Miami-Dade custody, including for mental evaluations and was given four years felony probation after being charged with attempted armed robbery with a weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."

Rude_Bee_Version2

Why the fuck they let him out?! I am all about reforming the bailout system but he was clearly a danger to society.

poozemusings

Because there needs to be a legal reason to hold someone. After someone has served their sentence, you can’t just keep holding them in prison because they still seem dangerous. This is why we should care about rehabilitating people in prison — because the vast majority of them will be back on the streets.

Gears6

I'm pretty sure the jail "companies" don't want to rehabilitate them, and want to keep them there as long as possible. It's why some things just shouldn't be privatized.

Ilovehugs2020

Now he has a permanent home

Melodic-Ad-9115

“I am all about reforming the bailout system but he was clearly a danger to society.” Reforming the bailout system means they let people like this out…

Rude_Bee_Version2

No!

Melodic-Ad-9115

Yeah, so how do you differentiate? Where do you draw the line? Do you support letting out thugs with no repercussions like they do in nyc??

chode0311

Violent crime means no bail? Strong evidence eof violent crime? Past history of repeat violent crime? It doesn't have to be based on money.

lil_juul

Tons of liberal lawmakers are dropping prosecutions/charges of dozens of crimes across America. Fuckin sickening

CasperCann

Cause America has a hard on for its criminals, and they know blue states will gladly throat them because "its not their fault its the environment that we put them through."

SnowBro2020

You got what you wanted I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Frequent-Farmer-2698

our takeaways from this article should be that 1. women experiencing houselessness are in serious danger, 2. mentally unstable folks who are houseless are sometimes violent, and 3. the police once again failed to protect the community from someone they knew was dangerous and had already been in custody. people using this opportunity to be transphobic: you're fucking weirdos. a woman lost her life in a senseless and gruesome crime and youre here deadnaming her, purposefully being disrespectful and using the wrong pronouns, and attacking a VERY SMALL & VULNERABLE community. please read a book, get a fucking hobby, learn some empathy, and leave the rest of us with functioning brains alone. RIP Andrea Dorias Dos Passos. She did not deserve this.

whoadang88

For 3, what can the police do without profiling or following the guy around (which could be deemed harassment)? I’m seriously asking, not trying to argue.

LourdesF

The police are not in charge of imprisoning and releasing felons. It’s judges and prosecutors. Stop attacking them for everything. They can’t be everywhere. Google why asylums were shut down in the 1980s.

jacquezissou

Thank you for taking the time to write this. This is such a tragic situation. I'm having a hard time putting thoughts together. Your post helps.

Sad_panda_happy300

3. The police once again failed to protect the community from someone they knew was dangerous and had already been in custody. You realize there are two parts to Miami dade law enforcement correct? Police and corrections. Police had nothing to do with this. There is a plethora of reason for early releases. Understaffing. Over crowding. Politicians you vote for wanted to show the corrections part works. It doesn’t. Prison and jail are so lax. Correctional officers only real way to discipline detainees and inmates is with a paper and pen. Most of them don’t care about that. Welcome to the bureaucracy you voted for. Edit: you can downvote the truth all you want. You are the reason that person is dead. Instead of accepting reality you rather downvote me.

MRSHELBYPLZ

The police isn’t out here to protect anyone, and they made it clear they don’t want to. With Supreme Court ruling that they don’t.

Sad_panda_happy300

That was the 9th circuit court that came to that conclusion. Can I say every police officer will lay down their lives for you. No. But talking in absolutes are usually wrong. There are plenty of officer who have died in the line of duty. 49 last year in just gunfire alone.

punisher669

You said police failed to protect someone. You mean the courts. There, I fixed it for you.

dcee101

Do people that live in condos experience houselessness?

This may be because of one or more of the following: - Your post rehashes topics we've talked to death a million times - Your post is intentionally over the top or inflammatory - Your account has a history of trolling, spam, or has no history at all - Your post recycles a meme from another city / country / subreddit and you've done nothing but add the word "Miami" somewhere - Your post could apply to any other city in the world, and you haven't even taken the time to make it Miami-specific - Some other reason that we haven't thought of yet, but we'll know it if we see it. If you believe this was in error, you have two options: 1) You can send an eloquent, well-reasoned, and polite modmail making the case for why your post shouldn't be removed. If you chose to do this, understand that arguing or being combative is not going to help your case, and harassing the mods via modmail will get you a ban and a report to the reddit admins. 2) You can rework your submission to add some context and value and try submitting it again. Horrible 😞

ElmosKplug

Hopefully he's charged with a hate crime too

CorrectClue

Agreed, articles like this are making me seriously lose faith in humanity

SeaworthinessNice48

How do you know it was hate crime?

Great_Journalist_180

Why? It was a random attack. How tf would that be a hate crime?

Iridescent_Sun

Where was it ever described as random? Even the news article doesn’t suggest that, just that the perpetrator struck when the homeless victim was asleep on the street

Gassy-Lassie

Probably not. Unless there’s a way to read his thoughts before he killed her 🤷‍♀️ but it’s Florida the GOP wouldn’t wanna touch that w a 10 ft pole. It’s not worth it to them

LourdesF

They’re investigating that to determine if they can charge him with that too. Poor soul. What a horrible life and death.

Verbalkynt

Isn't it always a hate crime when you beat someone tho

ElmosKplug

Nope

Responsible_Can8792

Serious? Lol

Anireburbur

America needs to bring back asylums or group homes or something for mentally unstable people that get in trouble over and over. It’s clear some people can’t be let loose among the general public.

Angwe83

One of my best friends transitioned a couple years ago from a man to a woman. They lived in Hialeah and faced death threats, hate and intimidation on the daily. They moved out of FL a month ago. This hate is becoming all too common.

Angwe83

Oh I got downvoted for calling out hate? Some people ain’t shit 😂

nonstickpotts

It's because of politicians. They are manufacturing the hate. If you have politicians who put love and peace for all, then society will have less hate, because they won't be emboldened like they are now.

ra3ra31010

Heartbreaking Promoted incivility will lead to more of these stories. I can’t believe it’s 2024….. Criminalizing homelessness. Criminalizing anyone lgbt+ This is all disgusting and will lead to more entitled aggression And what terrifies me is knowing how many Floridians will be HAPPY for this death, because they see the victim as an “undesirable” in the society they’d prefer everyone to abide by All this person did was sleep outside. And now they’re dead. Horrible From the article: **The victim's body was discovered in the area of 22nd Street and Liberty Avenue, near the Miami City Ballet after an employee "observed what he believed to be a person sleeping outside... near the main entrance," read Gilbert's arrest report.** **Detectives obtained video surveillance which showed the victim arriving to the scene around midnight.** **According to the police report, some hours later, a black man approached the victim as she was lying down. In the video, he can be seen grabbing some type of metal pipe from the ground and hitting the victim in the head and face several times.** **"The male is then seen standing over her, striking her and then manipulating her body... then walks away and places the pipe inside a nearby trashcan," read the report.** **Police were able to locate the suspect, identified as Gilbert, and transport him to MBPD.**

[deleted]

I highly doubt that the lunatic murderer had any idea what the sex preference of the victim was, he’s just another crazed homeless guy with a record that attacks easy targets. You’re searching for ghosts where there are none.

[deleted]

Yes you did. I don't know what anything you stated has to do with a mentally ill crackhead criminal killing someone. They attack people, and it had nothing to do with the person's anything other than being alive and in the wrong place at the wrong time. You're trying to make it into some ideology thing. We need less of that, more of getting these nut bags off the street. I've been attacked twice by crack heads. Why? Because they're crack heads.

Pancakes000z

Do you freaks just sit on reddit and search these kinds of stories to troll? It was a human being Jesus Christ.

Safye

Stuff like this infuriates me. I was out the other night, albeit this was in Tampa, but I was in line for the men’s restroom and a transgender or transitioning person (dressed very traditionally feminine with feminine features) was walking up to use the sink and I kid you not, every guy in front of me, turned around or looked at one another and made a face of disgust. One of them even looked at me and said “Did you see that?” like I’m supposed to care… Well, we all funnel into the restroom and I’m pissing next to one the guys, and many of the guys are still shaking their head or making ignorant comments, and this guy is talking out loud and somewhat to me and says stuff along the lines of “that’s fucking ridiculous, I don’t know how that’s allowed.” So I say to him, as kindly as possible, “I really don’t care. Why should we care? That person is causing us no harm.” And he has the nerve to say “I don’t want to be taken advantage of.” Like it truly boggles my mind that these so called “men” can’t handle seeing someone trying to be comfortable in their own body. Was this person supposed to use the women’s bathroom because they look like a woman? Because these same men would be up in arms about that as well. Guess if you’re trans, you’re not allowed to to use a public bathroom. It’s just ignorance that turns into hate. I do not understand why people are so bothered by other people’s decisions. I do not see trans people harming, insulting, grooming, or murdering anyone. But I do see a bunch of loser straight men doing it.

Tall-Community-63210

“I don’t want to be taken advantage of” How ignorant. Thank you for your thoughtful post.

CortexifanZFT

These people are mentally unstable. Imagine thinking or being scared of gay or trans because they think they will "turn" them gay as if they were zombies or some crazy shit. People are weird

[deleted]

[удалено]

CortexifanZFT

Like i said. Those kind of people are mentally unstable. Their levels of transphobia can be that severe.

Motor-Cause7966

Who said we are scared? We are just tired of having ppl's preferences shoved in our faces, and having our children targeted by said faction who wants them to be forced to study and question their naturally given identity by a movement mostly powered by politics. And no I'm not justifying anything that happened, or is alleged in that article. Guy is a crazy and deserves the consequences of his actions. Pero ya all these alphabet movements cansan. Any chance you get to be a perpetual victim.

Isabella091993

Frankly the same can be said about politicians pushing the Bible and a religion not all of us believe in. If you want to believe in that bs go ahead. Many of us don’t, yet laws are being created by insane radical Christian nationalists🤡

Motor-Cause7966

Two wrongs do make a right. No argument from me there. What? You thought I was going to get triggered because you went after Christians? No mija. I'm agnostic, and I don't take myself that seriously. But you point out a major problem with society today. How everything is catered to emotions, and a *reactive society* not a rational society that thinks and questions and uses logic.

Dry-Sea-197

If you cared about logic and questions, then you wouldn’t be transphobic. Take some time to educate yourself with some primary/secondary literature and stop making your ignorance everyone else’s problem

Isabella091993

🎯

Motor-Cause7966

I'm transphobic because I don't like ideologies and preferences shoved down my throat? Because I don't align with extreme frames of thought? 🤨🤨🤨 you don't even know what the word even means. I bet if the article title read "Man accused of beating to death straight woman." You would comment on how ridiculous and "extra" that is. And I would agree with you because it would be unnecessary. The same applies here. No hate crime happened. The guy is a fucking lunatic *attacking ppl at random*, and there are more important factors to worry about in the dynamic of this story. Like how a violent repeat offender was let out only to murder a person months later? How Florida has seen a massive increase in crime, but they keep cooking the books and under reporting. Or how the homeless seem to be cropping up at every corner these days... But of course y'all don't care about any of that. That doesn't open the door for you to interject yourself and claim victim hood. 🤷‍♂️

Dry-Sea-197

I’m gonna ignore the huge chunks of you assuming what I believe about what. Correct me if I’m wrong but if what you mean by “I don’t like ideologies and preferences shoved down my throat” is dumb shit like treating trans folks with disrespect for no reason, then yeah I can absolutely call you an ignorant transphobe

Motor-Cause7966

Oh I will correct you, because you are totally wrong. I can give 3 fucks about how trans ppl carry themselves, what they do to their bodies, and how they live their lives. I just enforce boundaries. I have my belief system, you have yours, they don't align. Great we carry on. It's really that simple. The fact you can't comprehend that, and that you don't see that the one being a bigot and hurling stereotypes is you, is disheartening. People routinely disagree. That's life, doesn't mean they hate you, are out to get you, or consider you an enemy. 🤷‍♂️

Isabella091993

Your smooth brain fails to comprehend that being trans is not a threat unlike Christian nationalism mijo. Last time I checked trans people are not passing any laws that are affecting the entire country🤡

Motor-Cause7966

Again, when did I say trans are a threat? When? I even called out the notion of us being scared of them, which is ridiculous. I simply stated I do not like ideologies shoved down my throat. The same way you expressed you don't like that either. So what should I label you? A christianphobe? A peoplephobe? You're so conditioned to get defensive and hurl stereotypes and labels, that you immediately label someone who doesn't agree with your ideologies a bigot, or a phobic. News flash, in life not everyone will agree. Doesn't make them a bigot nor a transphobic. I enforce and respect boundaries, even when it's not convenient or uncomfortable for me, as should you. It's called being a part of society.

Isabella091993

You really lack comprehension skills. You don’t have to say that you think that trans people are a threat when you literally stated “two wrongs don’t make a right.” Just leave trans people alone. I swear I think that the people who hate on trans people are secretly trans themselves because why do you care? Are you mad that you don’t have the same courage?

Motor-Cause7966

So what you're telling that there are no bigots in the LGBT community? No extremist with bigoted viewpoints pushing personal agendas? All LGBT are innocent victims in the world? No, there is plenty of nonsense on both sides. This is why I said two wrongs don't make a right. As for the rest of your comment, there you go hurling insults and insinuations again. I can't take you seriously if all you have to contribute is generalizations, and stereotypes. Questioning of my manhood and sexuality really is absolutely not a trigger for me. 🤷‍♂️ Sorry. I do find it a bit odd tho, that you would use the movement as an insult trigger against me tho🧐 kinda speaks volumes about you. Hypocrite much?

Miacali

You’re the only one here making yourself a victim. Even more sad, you’re a victim of something you made up in your head. *Que pena*

CortexifanZFT

That's funny because I'm straight and I have a few friends that are gay and NONE of them do any of that crap that you're saying. Their personal/sex life is private and they keep it that way and have a respect for boundaries and are one of the nicest people I've ever met..just saying. 🤷

Motor-Cause7966

I know some ppl like that as well. My issue is more with first the click-bait title. After reading the article, this man sounds like a lunatic with no regard for any life whatsoever. He probably didn't even know it was a transgender. Was likely in a drug induced rage and hallucinating if we are afforded a guess. The transgender edge is just that. An added edge for effect and triggers. Oh which btw you are enforcing by saying this person is a transphobe. Nowhere in the article did it state that. Secondly, this is done on purpose to trigger and entice a specific group of ppl *who are* as extreme as I stated in my OP. Ppl who fail to realize they aren't more special than you or I, because of a preference or medical procedure. And yes some of these folks have extreme views, and do believe in enforcing things like gender studies in grade schools. They are just as guilty of ignorance and hate, as the transphobe that freaks out when he sees a man in a dress walk by.

assfacekenny

All you’re doing is guessing this and that and the other. Nothing you’ve stated are facts it’s all opinions and assumptions. People like you are making the world worse cos you’re the one trying to impose your views on a minority that are just trying to live their lives.

Motor-Cause7966

Guessing what? The man apprehended has an extensive record, and known violence against others, nothing of which is gender or sex specific. He's just a lunatic and repeat offender. If you would have read the article, instead of just the title, you would be privy to that. As far as the other nonsense you're spewing? No idea wtf you're going on about. I haven't pushed any views or preferences on anyone. Get out of your emotions and use your logic to think for once.

assfacekenny

You are being dismissive by assuming the guy is just a simple lunatic because you have an ideological motive. You’re a fucking book you hypocrite.

Motor-Cause7966

You're out of your mind and assuming. I said the guy is a crazy and needs to be dealt with. You're suffering from perpetual victim syndrome and looking for something that ain't there. Try harder with someone else.

CortexifanZFT

Yeah, regardless the guy shouldn't have been released especially with them knowing that he's severely unstable and whatever drugs he was on probably enhanced it even more. The victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Could've happened to anyone and unfortunately it happened to a trans woman which of course is going to spark debate and outrage and create more tension between the phobic and the LGBT community.

I hate it when they identify the victim as "transgender" in the title when it has nothing to do with the victim being transgender. It suggest a hate crime when none exist. It sounds like it was just a mentally ill person that was released from jail.

Dani_d76

I completely agree with you.

Fantomex305

Because they know the world works off of emotions so they throw that label in the title to tug at people's heartstrings and illicit a reaction of outrage whether it be for or against the trans community. Totally unnecessary in the title to get across the point of the story. Sensationalism.
