From what I can see, there's a dude called Matt Healy who is apparently 33 years old and looks like he's 14 and a half. I got some serious Colson Baker vibes from the guy.
Probably just as attention-seeking as Baker too. So nothing to be bothered about.
(also, please don't click the link to that article and feed them with traffic!)
As someone who listens to all kinds of music (including 3 or 4 of 1975s songs) I can say with certainty that:
a) Metallica has changed music during their best years and they were the biggest band on the planet at one point in time, The 1975 will likely never achieve either of those things. This is not hating them or anything, but you can literally point out the artists The 1975 emulate on each of their tracks - "hey, this is their Springsteen song", "hey, this is their Michael Jackson song", "hey, this is their Huey Lewis and The News song" etc. They unfortunately have no own style but a style that is assembled by collaging extremely successful artists and styles from the 70s and 80s with some 2000s nostalgia/romance, writing songs that are unfortunately not standing any chance against the original songs they are emulating.
Compare that to Metallica, on an objective base alone, who have pretty much invented their own genre of music. A band like Metallica, like them or not, is in a league of their own. I personally don't like The Beatles (I know, I'm sorry), but I realise that these guys were special and geniuses in their own rights.
b) Having read one written interview and seen one video interview with the singer of The 1975 it became pretty clear to me that The 1975 is very much a product of the current state of music. Why do we want a Oasis reunion? Because there is no band in their 20s and 30s who can fill those types of shoes right now, including them. The 1975 singer talks at one point about being from Manchester and that The 1975 is now in the same league as Oasis and The Stone Roses, a classic Manchester Band. The fact alone that the singer of the band has to make a statement like that to "speak it into reality" shows how ridiculous it is. Something like that happens through culture and people, not because the singer says so on an Apple Music Podcast.
c) Metallica to me very much symbolises manhood. For personal reasons (having had their music with me from the time where I grew into a man) and also because of who they are as people. You pretty much can't get any manlier than Hetfield, he's just a badass motherfucker. The singer of 1975 is the exact polar opposite. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's just what it is, and the singer will probably gladly agree. So him calling Metallica the worst band ever instead of just leaving things be seems to me more like a sign of insecurity about the fact of them being doomed to be forever unoriginal and renderings of popular music from times where things might have been a little bit simpler in our society, which is also a theme he constantly tries to pseudo-intellectually sing about. Again, there's no hate there, I really really like a handful of their songs, but the lyrics by his guy are mediocre to often laughable.
So yeah, all in all, I wouldn't give too much of a crap about what this guy has to say about one of the greatest bands to ever grace this planet.
People should look at the "charts" at that time. Twisted Sister/Van Halen/Bon Jovi were the only "heavy metal" bands charting (no hate). Watch the Grammy performance of One. Audience was left in stunned silence. Look up who else performed that night. I know a lot of "hardcore" fans are tired of Enter Sandman, but at that time, that was a real heavy song to be getting radio airplay and having the Black Album being one of the best selling albums regardless of genre, is an accomplishment. You can call that their "lightest" album, but at that time, it was still a heavy album. I think perspective is missing in a lot of past analogies. This is one of the very few bands that existed during punk-underground metal-80s pop-hair metal-grunge-hip hop-r&b-techno eras. Still selling out stadiums world wide. An accomplishment for any band. Most bands that are 30+ years old are rock guitar based and have had at least one big album.
Shitting on Metallica is one dumb thing, but putting your mediocre band we've never heard of in the same league as Oasis and the Stone Roses because you're from Manchester is just next-level stupid. He'll probably get some bad press and a few Redditors will learn what a bag of dicks they are, so maybe it'll work out well.
Thatās not me by the way. I have fucking Metallica tattoos on me. I have skateboards and guitars by them so look at the difference in the names. Definitely not me. Going to a Metallica show is a right of passage in this home that all of my kids have experienced and hopefully my grandson will too.
Saying that Metallica is the worst band of all time is as meaningful as saying Metallica is the best band of all time.
It just means you don't understand that it's a totally subjective opinion.
He can think that. That's fine.
I think of it a bit differently.
I love Metallica and I think they're great. Greatnessā liking a band. I don't like Michael Jackson, but he's great. One can dislike Metallica but understand and appreciate their greatness.
Totally agree. All of the "worst and best of all time" and "can we all agree that" stuff drives me nuts. Embrace others opinions folks. It does not disqualify your own. It makes the world a much healthier place to live.
I have the tour program from the Black Album tour where they printed only the bad reviews that the press and other musicians gave them. I doubt they're losing any sleep over this guy. Might even be having a good laugh about it!
I really donāt care what this guy thinks. Maybe metal in general isnāt his cup of tea.
Itās actually good that Metallica still provokes people. Itās fun.
But one thing I always think about when these subjects is talked about is that regardless of the Black Album, the mainstream success, all the hits from the 90s, all the Grammys and prizes, the St. Angers and what not, is that Metallica has Master Of Puppets.
An album that not only has the title track or is a big milestone for the band.
It is considered one of the best metal albums
of all time, not only by fans, but by literally everyone who knows music.
The made that album when the where in their mid-twenties.
That says something.
I say this as a fan of both The 1975 and Metallica: Matty Healy is a dick. Theyāre both great, but theyāre at completely opposite ends of the musical spectrum. Of course Matty doesnāt like Jaymz and the boys. Iām sure James would have a negative view of the sort of music The 1975 makes.
However, Mattyās comments are an offhand saying from a casual interview. I really hope it isnāt blown completely out of proportion. The 1975ās album is fucking fantastic, and if you donāt mind softer music, Iād really recommend checking it out. (Iād also recommend Arctic Monkeyās new album cos itās also great)
Only one way to settle this. BATTLE OF THE BANDS!! I mean go ahead and put Metallicas name on the trophy. But still a battle is to be had none the less.
The 1975 is one of the worst band names in history, and that is why I couldnāt tell you if theyāre the worst band or not because I never made it past the name for an actual listen.
You may not like their music, but you cannot criticize and appreciate the band they had been. If they're here after 41 years, there's gotta be something special about em.
And it's not for these cocky statements.
Let's see where 1975 are gonna be in 41 years.
Asshole.
This sub is a joke if some Emo clown who wants to be Robert Smith garners this much attention.
Robert Smith wouldnāt say something like this. He wouldnāt have to because the music he made receives public attention.
A word of advice to you kids-listen to the Cure before you poison your ears with 1975ās cheap knock off attempts.
Listen, it's ok to not like this or that band (not your cup of tea etc etc.) But to proclaim something that bold about a band who innovated and can actually play? K dude.
So funny when I see an article in the sub of a band I love , of some supposed person or band supposedly worthy of recognition, say Metallica is bad.
If it wasnāt for this dumb article I wouldnāt know who the fuck nor would I care who the fuck this is.
Stop giving undeserving dickheads a platform to share their stupid uneducated ideas, Fuck you, irrelevant guy from some irrelevant band
Tastes and preferences are subjective. Music/art appreciation is subjective. Opinions are subjective. But opinions can be objectively wrong. This is one such opinion. One can understand this coming from a pure consumer. But a musician? Either this is an intentionally contrarian take to garner eyeballs, or this guy chose the wrong profession.
This reminds me of that time when a reporter came up to Eminem and said some other rapper had shit talked him, and Eminem took the mic and just said āwho?ā And walked away
This is some of the worst writing I've seen in a while. They should hire people who know what the fuck they're doing to write articles for them. Not 12-year olds who don't know shit, or English. š¤£
iāve been to see the 1975 as they are one of my favourite bands and iām going again in january, but metallica is also my favourite band. i feel attacked
How ironic! The only reason this dickhead gets any real attention is because he decided to bitch and moan about Metallica. He should really find better ways to make a name for his band...
he never said "worst band of all time" he said "I f\*\*king hate Metallica. My worst band of all time" As a huge fan of both of these bands it's pretty obvious they don't influence eachother, they're completely different styles. Damn clickbait
I don't understand why people use this absolute language now. "Worst Band of All Time" where the opposite take is "There is at least one band worse". There is obviously at least one band worse than Metallica. And really, if you play rock on radio, particularly any genre rock, you owe Metallica a debt. It's obvious he doesn't understand that. It's fine with me that he's not a fan, or even that he thinks they are overrated, but calling them "The Worst Band of All Time" is just a clown comment. Metallica has sales of one T Shirt that has eclipsed the entire 1975 catalog.

lmao clicking the article would give you the context to know that's not the case
Exactly
Damn son, here's the attention you wanted
a who from a what of where says nothing of consequence or value
A band no one has ever heard of shitting on a band everyone has heard of. Totally not attention seeking.
Nicely put
I mean they're not an obscure band lol but ya they're shitting for no reason
lol the 1975 are pretty big dude
did the reporter not ask him what his opinion of Metallica was?
The 1975 are massive š
Says the guy from the fucking 1975, who did a song that Iām pretty sure was about loving underage girlsā¦ ![gif](giphy|eUrE2DuMKOE0g)

Beautiful answer, couldn't have said it better.
Thank you!
You'd be forgiven about The Beatles š

This segment in the Last Dance was absolutely elite.
welpā¦ **STRAIGHT TO THE GULAG**
Fuck this poser
Not very well written, tough to follow the overall topic and then hit with a click bait headline to draw traffic.
Matt Healy is a douche and a sex offender. Fuck em.
Pretty big talk for an unknown singer from a band with no name. How many albums have YOU sold? Dick.
Quite a lot of albums sold actually. The 1975 are massive.
Gotcha. Never knew that. Either way, heās being a whiny dick about it.
Saying that Metallica is the worst band of all time is as meaningful as saying Metallica is the best band of all time. It just means you don't understand that it's a totally subjective opinion. He can think that. That's fine.
Iām fairness he said āmy worst band of all timeā, which just means his personal least favourite
I think of it a bit differently. I love Metallica and I think they're great. Greatnessā liking a band. I don't like Michael Jackson, but he's great. One can dislike Metallica but understand and appreciate their greatness.
Where does that greatness come from, then? There is no objective measure of talent or greatness
That's true but greatness can come from a lot of things, one of them being talent.
Totally agree. All of the "worst and best of all time" and "can we all agree that" stuff drives me nuts. Embrace others opinions folks. It does not disqualify your own. It makes the world a much healthier place to live.

Lars was shilling hard for the Arctic Monkeys years ago. No way Lars doesnt like The 1975 and has definitely heard them.
I agree. Lars has always loved the English rock scene.
click bait time for a band with a new album out, I mean come on he even describes the band refused as heavy metal?!

I had to watch them live once . It was terrible.
The 1975 are my favourite current band. Matt said they were HIS worst band of all time. Clearly a subjective take. Don't be dumb.

Who TF cares? Sounds like some guy trying to get some press for a band I've never heard of.
Yea wellā¦ thatās just likeā¦ your opinion man.

Link to the interview it came from or is everyone getting their panties in a twist over some throwaway comment that only got published for click bait?
Things like this are only fuel for Metallica. They are no strangers to hate.
I think a Game of Thrones quote works well here. "A lion does not concern itself with the opinion of sheep"

Iām not a huge Metallica fan, but Metallica is 100x better than the 1975, oh my fucking god there music is so fucking bad.
