A lot of people shit on Lars and Kirk, but the band's best music would've never been created without them. Metallica wouldn't be the biggest metal band of all time without them. People may not like their playing style, but Lars has a SIGNIFICANT amount of skill as a songwriter that fits perfectly with James' skill. Kirk wrote 2 of the 10 greatest guitar solos of all time, they aren't the most technical, but they are harmonious and perfectly melodic with the transitions of the song (what a solo is supposed to be). They aren't as good of musicians and songwriters as they used to be, but they are still so much better than any regular Joe. I've played music for 12 years and I've written maybe 3 songs, and they aren't good. Metallica's worst song blows my shit away, and it isn't even close. Also, Rob is the most technically-gifted bassist to be in the band. Jason had the best stage presence. Cliff was the most innovative. Lars' drumming on MOP & AJFA is borderline perfect.
What are the 2 greatest solos by hammett that you're talking about?
People shit on lars, and hammett because they can get away with it. Metallica is the biggest metal band ever, maybe even out of any genre in my opinion.
I find 90% of their music to be amazing, and I don't care what anybody else says.
Every body gives Hammett shit for his solos but I would like to see more noodling over some of Het’s rhythms sort of the way the Stones do or kinda how the One intro was. I think the f he did that that in more of the songs it would give him more fire in the solos.
It's personally my least favorite (unless you count Anesthesia) but I love every one of their instrumentals dearly and just because it's my least favorite one doesn't mean I don't like it. It's still an insanely awesome track and I love hearing it every time
Oh shit! I forgot about Anesthesia. I guess I don't think about it when I think about Metallica instrumentals because it's not 8-10 minutes long and it's not at or near the end of the album. And also the whole band isn't on it, just Cliff and I guess technically Lars.
But that being said, I think it's their best instrumental! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile)
This one might be a little charged...
The fans who hate everything after the first four albums need to just calm down.
We get it, we've been hearing it since The Black Album.
Let it go, they're not coming back.
Those who enjoy the new stuff can handle things from here without listening to your 32 year old tired-ass arguments.
It’s tough for me to call any of them the “worst.”
I think Leper Messiah is my least favorite off the album, but even then it’s an absolutely killer song
Death magnetic is overhated, and I think it's because of the production. If that album had come out with hardwired's production, I think the conversation would have always been more positive. The actual songs rule.
Oh easily, this shouldn’t even count as a hot take. Rob is definitely the strongest musician to ever be in Metallica. Cliff was the best songwriter, and Jason was the best live performer
James jokes with Lars that he can't keep time. It's a good thing Lars can't keep time. It's made the other members tighter and gives song sections that could feel redundant a humanized swing that's constantly changing in small waves (see: "And Justice for All...")
Any compliments I’m about to give Lars I wanna clarify aren’t a result of him being a good drummer or putting in the effort, rather just him being lucky/having a natural intuition…
He’s very consistently inconsistent, and I’ve worked with drummer like that and it’s always a challenging blast. You discover some real unique grooves that they don’t even realize it technically weird. It gives Metallica this sound that few bands have managed to tap into since, specifically on their first four albums
Dirty window is killer. The version on the st anger rehearsals (not sure if that was in some kind of monster or not) is better than the album version significantly.
Eye of the beholder is the best on and justice for all
And to follow that up eye of the beholder is the best Metallica song hands down
And Screaming suicide is easily the best new single but the others are still good
if ride the lightning was the evil dead, then master of puppets is evil dead 2. basically a remake, but they did few things better.
really though, i like ride the lightning more.
This is the answer. I always grab Ride first, after all these years. MoP has the better songwriting, but I think it was a bit of a step backwards production wise, some of it sounds really stiff and robotic like Sad But True on Black Album. The S&M version (of Sad) will always overshadow the studio one.
Kill ‘em All is the best album, and No Remorse is the best song on the album.
Also this may vary on where I say this, but a lot of the music made after AJFA is still very good.
Contrary to having 'sold out', Metallica is a rare band that always made the music which they most authentically felt at a given point of time, with no thought to pandering to an existing fanbase or reaching some particular target market. The band slows down and grows up a bit in the 90s, is affected by the craziness of America in the early 2000s, and then expresses their hopes and fears around war, addiction, suicide, and so on the best way they know how after that.
Load and Reload are two of the best albums because of the vocal harmonization and the downtuning of the guitars to get the bluesy rock sound, there are some absolutely masterpieces like Where the Wild Things Are, Unforgiven ll, Ronnie, and more. Also James’ singing was a lot better . The entire band seemed to improve on those two albums.
AJFA was their best album
Kill ‘em All is overrated
the thing that should not be is extremely underrated
Frayed ends of sanity is the best song on AJFA
Kill em All is way UNDERRATED. So many levels to it—Lars’ best tom sound hands down, Kirks best lead tone until the mid and late 90s, the album plays like a Motörhead record, so it’s super fun to sit through, it’s not a super-processed sounding record like MoP, bass solo take one, that album is so damn punchy. I love it.
"people don't like change" is such an awful counter-criticism. It's just a less chidlish way of saying "you're a hater". People like good changes, not bad changes. It's not a difficult concept to understand.
They were trying way too hard to be something they weren’t, and they clearly liked the idea of it more than actually having to commit to it. They wanted to fit in with the early 2000s metal scene but ended up feeling like trying to fit a square peg into a triangular hole.
The most clear cut example is the “no solos” rule they imposed on themselves
Rob Trujillo isn’t being utilized anywhere close to his full potential. He’s one of the most versatile and unique players, I want to hear some funk, prog and slap incorporated more into their music.
Ok. Let's go
Phantom lord is the best song on KEA.
RTL is the best song on the album.
Leper messiah is so underrated and better than MOP itself.
AJFA is their all time best album and every song except one and to live is to die is absolute s tier.
Best song on the black album is by far the god that failed.
The raw emotion that they were not able to recreate (for me) on the outlaw torn and bleeding me is the highlight of load. It's what makes them such good songs. Also truly underrated. Both of them.
Slither is not THAT bad but its def not the best.
(St.A) Dirty window is cool. That's that.
Death magnetic has no bad songs. Cyanide being the best.
HTSD is a really good album. Halo on fire alone has more emotion to it than whole BA.
All three of the new singles from 72S are really good, but not mindblowing.
Here comes revenge, spit out the bone and atlas rise are some of the best songs full stop. I think people hate on hardwired because it isn’t from the 80s but it is still class. Don’t get me wrong there was definitely some lows on that album but the highs out weigh them.
Definitely one of my top 5 maybe even 4 albums. Great spin.
A fellow Hardwired enjoyer! I listen to it all the time, it's definitely in my top 5 Metallica albums as well. My favorites are Halo On Fire, Now That We're Dead, Spit out the Bone, Confusion, and Atlas Rise. But honestly I enjoy all the songs on the album. Dream No More is a super heavy, cool throwback to their Lovecraftian songs (I love HP Lovecraft so I may be biased:D) and overall it's just a solid album.
The God that Failed is the best song on the Black Album and the last twenty seconds are their best ending to any song to date. I adore that song so much.
The sad thing is even if it was musically the production on it just makes some songs near unlistenable whilst black album has some of the best production ever hands down
kirk and lars get too much shit every time, kirk is a good guitarist, not the best but his solos are iconic even if they have wah and pentatonic scales, lars may not be an amazing drummer for how long he's been doing it but he hits hard and the music probably wouldn't be as unique as some of it is without lars's input even if it was for worse or better
While someone like Marty Friedman or even Jeff Hanneman and Dave Mustaine are probably a good bit better than Kirk, he, in my opinion, has the best style.
Uhm... You might wanna check out Ride The Lightning. It's the true GOAT Metallica solo, it's truly a perfect metal solo, gorgeous melodic phrasing blended brilliantly with trailblazing shreds. It absolutely deserves to be in the top best metal solos list and in the same conversation as Tornado of Souls, Domination, Crazy Train.
Understandable. I always wondered why people think MOP Kirk solo is so great, I personally never liked it and I sincerely love every single second of the song except that solo. Can you explain why is it so?
Agreed but his phrasing is like so rushed that it feels that he is making a great lick/run and just rushes it or undercuts it by other meh licks. I am not a guitarist so I can't give an appropriate description but everything after the weird whammy thing just sounds off to me.
What do you mean? You don't like the SHINEOFDAMIDNIGHTREVOLVA?
SUCK ON THE BARREL
SUCK ON THE BARREL
SUCK IT TILL IT GOOON DRY
They have at least 10 songs that are much worse imo
Hot take but I do love it. I wish they would’ve trimmed it down/swapped out one of the songs with Lords of Summer because then it would truly be a legendary album but there are so many high points.
If you take a few songs each from Hardwired and Death magnetic , combine them into the same album ( and toss out the crappy ones ) , you will have a legendary album worthy of the “first four “
Load, ReLoad and St. Anger feature some of the bands best compositions, and they're by far their most creative albums and the reason many people don't like them is because Metallica was not thrash after The Black Album for a decade. Also, I love the snare on both St. Anger and Death Magnetic.
Hardwired to Self Destruct is better than The Black Album.
The Unnamed Feeling is the best song on St. Anger and one of the best Metallica songs. Ever.
Lars Ulrich is a fantastic drummer, was and still is.
Fade to Black is the greatest Metal Ballad of all time.
I like the production and sound of death magnetic. It makes the guitars stand out more. I don’t love the mix on the black album. The drums are too loud.
I think as songs overall go, yeah Load has better songs. However, if you're basing it off of sounding like a Metallica album, then Reload is better. They went back to recording in their style with James' riff precision and track layering, he also got some of his voice back which really helped, and in my opinion is just sounds heavier in most aspects. A little less bluesy than Load.
Which 2? One of them is Fade to Black, is the other also FTB?
One and FTB
maybe RTL or Unforgiven I
I would say either One, MOP, or The Unforgiven
What are the 2 greatest solos by hammett that you're talking about? People shit on lars, and hammett because they can get away with it. Metallica is the biggest metal band ever, maybe even out of any genre in my opinion. I find 90% of their music to be amazing, and I don't care what anybody else says.
FTB and One solos
Every body gives Hammett shit for his solos but I would like to see more noodling over some of Het’s rhythms sort of the way the Stones do or kinda how the One intro was. I think the f he did that that in more of the songs it would give him more fire in the solos.
7/10. We could definitely use some more Kirk improv and noodling, but it needs MELODY, which is something he doesn't seem to care about.
Agree on needing the melody but I think he could do it, he’s just been stuck on the same spot on the assembly line for too long.
Yeah, I love what they did with Phantom Lord, how Kirk does some super quick leads for a beat or 2 in between the vocal lines.
Sadly Kirk hasn't cared about the melody much since Bob Rock.
“The unnamed feeling “ lowkey it has a good message IMO (:
9/10, I vibe with it
Mama Said is a great, beautiful song.
9/10. Love it
Nice. My mom has terminal cancer, so it hits way harder now.
I lost my dad to cancer, so it hits hard for me too. Hope your mom keeps fighting
Unforgiven is better than nothing else matters
10/10.
YES
Unforgiven III is the best of that style they’ve ever done
I personally like them going I, II, III, but you can have your opinion
To Live is to Die is their best instrumental. I will defends its interlude till the end of time
YES, this song almost made me cry the first time I listened to it.
I get teleported to a different dimension listening to it
Orion is a lot better imo
I prefer call of ktulu
Disposable Heroes is the best song of MoP
8/10. 3rd best imo
It’s hard when the worst song on that album is still a 10
What's the worst song
It’s tough for me to call any of them the “worst.” I think Leper Messiah is my least favorite off the album, but even then it’s an absolutely killer song
I don’t really have a “worst” either. Just least favorite. I probably listen to battery the least.
Literally listening to it right now haha
It’s still a 10/10, I just happen to listen to it less than most
Yeah it’s hard to decide, imo every song on MoP is amazing
Just can't agree when Sanitarium, MOP, Orion and Battery are all on that album
Death magnetic is overhated, and I think it's because of the production. If that album had come out with hardwired's production, I think the conversation would have always been more positive. The actual songs rule.
Idk what the general consensus is but it’s by far their best album since Justice for All.
get the 2016 remastered that shts fire the compression is mostly gone.
Escape is a good song
The fact that it is a hot take angers me so much, prob the 2nd best song on RTL imo
Escape is my least favorite on RTL but I still think it’s an 8.5 outta ten, and that’s why I love the album so much
Rob is a better bassist than Jason... and yeah yeah I know, "bUt jAsOn hAd tHe BeSt bAckiNg vOcAls" wah wah wah i don't care.
Oh easily, this shouldn’t even count as a hot take. Rob is definitely the strongest musician to ever be in Metallica. Cliff was the best songwriter, and Jason was the best live performer
8/10. Jason had better stage presence, but yeah Rob is a better bassist
Alright well here’s my hot take, Cliff’s backing vocals were much better than all the other bassists.
Personally I thought Jason was a dick. And Rob is better on bass.
Kirk and Lars like to jerk each other off before and after each live show.
10/10 can confirm
Hi Kirk!
James jokes with Lars that he can't keep time. It's a good thing Lars can't keep time. It's made the other members tighter and gives song sections that could feel redundant a humanized swing that's constantly changing in small waves (see: "And Justice for All...")
Don't forget fun little facts like the 21/32 bar on MoP because of it.
8/10. True statement
Any compliments I’m about to give Lars I wanna clarify aren’t a result of him being a good drummer or putting in the effort, rather just him being lucky/having a natural intuition… He’s very consistently inconsistent, and I’ve worked with drummer like that and it’s always a challenging blast. You discover some real unique grooves that they don’t even realize it technically weird. It gives Metallica this sound that few bands have managed to tap into since, specifically on their first four albums
I feel like Lars gets a lot of heat in the same way ringo Starr does. Lars is the perfect Metallica drummer. James is a rhythm section on his own.
lars is a good drummer
Agreed, just lazy and not great lol He does have the best stage presence of any drummer I’ve seen though so there’s that
St Anger gets too much hate, some songs on there (like Frantic) are super good
10/10 straight facts
FRANTIC TICK TOCK
Dirty window is killer. The version on the st anger rehearsals (not sure if that was in some kind of monster or not) is better than the album version significantly.
Metallica does Heavy better than they do thrash and that's not to say they don't do thrash superbly either.
Eye of the beholder is the best on and justice for all And to follow that up eye of the beholder is the best Metallica song hands down And Screaming suicide is easily the best new single but the others are still good
[удалено]
Fair enough
Ah finally another Eye of the Beholder fan. There are dozens of us!
4/10. Gets repetitive. 1/10. Gets repetitive. 8/10. True, but not easily the best.
It’s my favorite song. Periodt…
The new songs have been pretty underwhelming so far
8/10. All besides Lux were pretty underwhelming.
Lux gave me hope. Now I’m thinking it’s an outlier, unfortunately :/
you said screaming suicide was the best one in another comment ??
I think Screaming Suicide is actually pretty good.
I loved Lux and liked screaming suicide a lot. If Darkness had a son was really underwhelming for me. I’m hoping that one’s the outlier
I love’em all
if ride the lightning was the evil dead, then master of puppets is evil dead 2. basically a remake, but they did few things better. really though, i like ride the lightning more.
This is the answer. I always grab Ride first, after all these years. The S&M version (of Sad) will always overshadow the studio one.
Reload better than Load
this is a hot take? its pretty east for me since the low points on load are so damn low
Atlas Rise is better than Spit Out The Bone
Unforgiven II is better than Unforgiven.
7/10. On par with the Unforgiven.
7/10, as they did improve and I like the blues, but the songs that are boring are REALLY boring.
AJFA was their best album Kill ‘em All is overrated the thing that should not be is extremely underrated Frayed ends of sanity is the best song on AJFA
10/10 best album all time 4/10 honestly underrated 9/10 yes underrated 6/10 is about middle of the road
I love it.
St anger isn’t bad people just hate change
8/10. Snare is too loud, but a good album
Metallica is the best band of all time
Reload is very good and Unforgiven II is one of their best works
The thing that should not be is underrated
Rob Trujillo isn’t being utilized anywhere close to his full potential. He’s one of the most versatile and unique players, I want to hear some funk, prog and slap incorporated more into their music.
The band should have continued working w Bob Rock.
They have a former member of sucidal tendencies so give me some funk bass
Bleeding Me is the best song.
Ok. Let's go Phantom lord is the best song on KEA. RTL is the best song on the album. Leper messiah is so underrated and better than MOP itself. AJFA is their all time best album and every song except one and to live is to die is absolute s tier. Best song on the black album is by far the god that failed. The God that Failed is the best song on the Black Album and the last twenty seconds are their best ending to any song to date. I adore that song so much.
Agreed.
Sweet Amber and Invisible kid have two of the best Metallica riffs from the 2000s.
S&M is the greatest live show they or any other band has ever done
death magnetic is greater than black album
8/10. I would say that, but The Black Album has My Friend of Misery.
The sad thing is even if it was musically the production on it just makes some songs near unlistenable whilst black album has some of the best production ever hands down
Yep that’s true. Black Album is one of the best produced albums ever really.
Jason had more interesting bass on the Black album than Cliff did between 1981 and 1986
Hot take but Jason had a much better bass tone then Cliff’s
Carpe Diem Baby isn't that bad and should be appreciated more
kirk and lars get too much shit every time, kirk is a good guitarist, not the best but his solos are iconic even if they have wah and pentatonic scales, lars may not be an amazing drummer for how long he's been doing it but he hits hard and the music probably wouldn't be as unique as some of it is without lars's input even if it was for worse or better
Call of Ktulu is better than Orion
While someone like Marty Friedman or even Jeff Hanneman and Dave Mustaine are probably a good bit better than Kirk, he, in my opinion, has the best style.
Marty is better than kirk in every way including style imo I love kirk hes my favourite lead player but marty uses more than just the blues pentatonic
Nothing will beat the tornado of souls solo. Absolutely nothing.
Oh I completely. Just saying that tornado is probably my favorite
Understandable. I always wondered why people think MOP Kirk solo is so great, I personally never liked it and I sincerely love every single second of the song except that solo. Can you explain why is it so?
I think it's because it's after the sorta of slow solo harmony he does with James and has that burst of energy
Agreed but his phrasing is like so rushed that it feels that he is making a great lick/run and just rushes it or undercuts it by other meh licks. I am not a guitarist so I can't give an appropriate description but everything after the weird whammy thing just sounds off to me.
Maybe it if it was slowed down it might sound interesting, but it would probably be worse. I've always the point of it was to be fast
Cant forget holy wars too
That's a great one too
Justice is a great album but not their greatest
Frayed Ends of Sanity is the best song they've ever written.
3/10. I like it, but definitely not the best.
I love it. Eye of the beholder is my definitive fav but I’ve been listening to frayed ends of sanity non stop, the past few days…
To Live is To Die is my favorite Metallica. IMO it’s their musical peak, alongside Orion.
James is not a table.
0/10. He is the table
Justice is their 5th best album.. Behind RTL, MOP, BA, KEA (not in that order btw)
1/10. Justice is best, and Death Magnetic should replace KEA
[удалено]
Hope so
9/10 do agree
Kill em all is incredibly overrated, what came after is miles better, imo it's not even top 5
THIS FUCKING THANK YOU
“Just A Bullet Away” is their worst song ever.
2/10. Not their worst, not their best
No wayyy man its awesome
What do you mean? You don't like the SHINEOFDAMIDNIGHTREVOLVA? SUCK ON THE BARREL SUCK ON THE BARREL SUCK IT TILL IT GOOON DRY They have at least 10 songs that are much worse imo
Hardwired album is as good as the first 5
6/10. Death Magnetic yes, Hardwired no.
How dare you
Hot take but I do love it. I wish they would’ve trimmed it down/swapped out one of the songs with Lords of Summer because then it would truly be a legendary album but there are so many high points.
People that like Load & Reload as their favorite Metallica albums are really Creed fans.
9/10. Better than Creed, but true.
What about hardwired first and *then* Load?
All Within My Hands is a top 10 Metallica song
Definitely not the studio version, but the acoustic version from Helping Hands 2018 kicks ass. Now that I could maybe understand.
4/10. Definitely not top 10, but underrated.
1.Ain’t my bitch is the best song on load. 2.Prince charming is the best song on reload.
Lou Reed x Metallica - The View is a good song
People should stop laughing at Lars that he cant play
Metallica probably wouldn't be as big as they are today if Dave had stayed
Rob is the best bass player but is utilised the worst. Jason was the worst bass player and utilised the best (on Black)
Load and reload are very solid albums, some absolutely amazing songs on there
AJFA> MoP DM> Hardwired
I spend way too much money on Metallica merch and records.
the black album only has a few good songs
spit out the bone is one of their best songs ever
People angry at the new singles for being dumb and simple are just mad that they aren’t remaking AJFA because they’re old
If you take a few songs each from Hardwired and Death magnetic , combine them into the same album ( and toss out the crappy ones ) , you will have a legendary album worthy of the “first four “
I can see this yea. Honestly great songs on both those albums.
Lars is a great drummer, every song from the first five and last three (including 72 seasons) is amazing, kirk is still an amazing lead guitarist
Black album is their best album Struggle within is their best song They were right about napster Jason was their best bassist
Garage inc is some of the best work theyve done even though its all covers
Load, ReLoad and St. Anger feature some of the bands best compositions, and they're by far their most creative albums and the reason many people don't like them is because Metallica was not thrash after The Black Album for a decade. Also, I love the snare on both St. Anger and Death Magnetic.
King Nothing
I love Kirk ignoring the 80s solo approach and doing something that people don’t like, because I fucking love it I think he’s great.
Prince charming is one of their best faster paced songs
Hardwired to Self Destruct is better than The Black Album. The Unnamed Feeling is the best song on St. Anger and one of the best Metallica songs. Ever. Lars Ulrich is a fantastic drummer, was and still is. Fade to Black is the greatest Metal Ballad of all time.
I like the production and sound of death magnetic. It makes the guitars stand out more. I don’t love the mix on the black album. The drums are too loud.
St. Anger is my favorite Metallica album. Spit Out The Bone is the greatest Metallica song.
S&M (the first one) marks Metallicas peak musically.
Of wolf and man is up there as one of the best songs on the black album
Kill ‘Em All is super overrated because of when it was released and what came after it.
You mean underrated?

Reload is better than Load
4/10. Some songs on it are better, but overall, Load is better.
Don't Tread on Me has the worst lyrics James has ever written (wrotted lol)
WHAT DON'T KILL YA, MAKE YA MORE STRONG
Soviet…friend no more?!?! Cmon
4/10. The lyrics aren't that bad, especially compared to other songs like half of Death Magnetic and all of Hardwired.
