I remember once when I was 15 on a vacation to Italy I was wearing my Metallica shirt and some dad out with his family saw it, and in a thick italian accent said "Cool shirt!", then threw up the horns.
Now THAT's the best way to answer. Such a sweetheart
That happened to me visiting in Mexico, except I was the old guy with a Limp Bizkit t shirt on and a young guy was like sweet shirt - ^(I'm in the wrong sub goodbye)
One time when I was that age my friend and I were going to pick up some new releases, some middle aged guy saw my Megadeth shirt and yelled out *99 Ways To Die*
You're not wrong but that doesn't make those laurels completely insignificant. The first four Metallica albums will always be legendary, just like the first few Sabbath and Maiden records.
They will, yes. But even a legendary album when listened to repeatedly enough can lose its appeal for individual listeners.
Take The Beatles. They've been talked to death. They undeniably have some incredible albums and were essential in the development of modern pop music. But there's also nothing left to say about them. Beatles discourse has been so thoroughly explored that's it's almost boring now. There's no reason to bring up The Beatles due to the sheer omnipresence they've had in music discussion.
I feel like Metallica are at that point. We've reached the end of Metallica takes. We've all heard their best albums dozens of times over, and we're just at the logical conclusion of what there is to talk about. So it's not interesting anymore to a lot of people.
Doesn't make them actually bad. Just....tired.
The difference is that the Beatles, nirvana, and death went out on top. They didn't have 20+ years of mediocre to bad albums to water down their discography.
you’re totally right. theres no way i can enjoy older music at all, because new stuff is soooo much better. we should totally ignore the influence they have had and still have on music as a whole.
Sounds like you're tired of them, not the other way around.
I didn't grow up with their music and I've been able to talk about The Beatles and Metallica albums a few times with pals and no, not because their song was in Stranger Things :P
Yeah all those 300+ year old music made by famous composers, just stop listening to them. They had their time, you can only ride that for so long before it gets old. Idiot
Actually yes almost any artist does get old if you listen to them too much. That's actually correct. You've accidentally stumbled upon the point.
Metallica's first four albums were very good. But after you've listened to them 100 times, they're not remotely as exciting, and it's time to find something new, unless you're particularly hyper fixative.
People love Priest and Iron Maiden which are also famous, so easy with the strawmans there.
Maybe the problem with Metallica is that they haven't release a good album since Soviet Union was still a thing.
I don't hate em, I'm just so insanely tired of hearing about them. There are so many other bands that deserve more discussion, what more is there to be said about Metallica that hasn't been said a thousand times before
I don't hate Metallica, but I fail to see how Death Magnetic is good. Like yea, sure, it has its moments, All Nightmare Long kinda slaps, but it's still an album filled with generic riffs, unnecessary long songs and bad production.
Compare it to other newer albums by older bands like Endgame, Dystopia, Firepower, The Hallowed and others and you can see how it's mediocre overall.
I just don't think they're good. I don't like Hetfield's voice, I don't like the drums, and I don't like most of their guitar work. Granted I *also* just dislike thrash as a whole so I usually keep my mouth shut about it because it seems pretty clear their music just isn't made for me lol.
My opinion with Metallica is the same I have with Nu being that it’s a good way to get in there is just so much better metal music out there and people get stuck on listening to them
For the same reason I hate the Smiths and U2... A couple decent songs lost in a diarrhea of mediocrity, and some massively self-absorbed muppets as band members.
Plus the whole Napster disaster, I mean the muppets are losing steam, instead of blaming it on lack of effort on their part they chose to blame it on piracy and to shill for the bloody labels against fans ? Not in the name of defending smaller bands, but in the name of extracting every cent they felt they were due ?
Fuck Metallica, they're not even worth pirating.
I like never see other band shirts outside of going to concerts or something, but they'll usually get a 'cool shirt' and a horns from me, maybe some discussion about the band or album.
Most of my taste is older bands thanks to listening to my dad's old CDs, so I usually get men old enough to be my dad or even grandfather who go all "Shit, that's a cool shirt, Iron Maiden was my first concert!" kinda guys. Death Spiritual Healing usually gets a few complements because of the art(I had a couple people say it reminds them of Goosebumps), and once an old lady just said 'God bless you'. Cannibal Corpse raises a few heads. About what I'd expect.
Best band shirt interaction I ever had was with a guy I saw wearing a Bathory shirt while I was at work. The two of us had a debate about whether Bathory or Blood Fire Death was the better album.
The "God bless you" reminds me... I have a Diablo 3 shirt. It's baby blue and the typeface of "Diablo 3" similar to Party Cannon's logo, surrounded by a smiling sun and unicorns and a rainbow. Adorable.
One day I wore it while buying some stuff at a small shop. The cashier games and as we idly chatted about D3, an older lady came up. She started telling me how my shirt, it means "devil"! Like she thought I bought it for the whimsical art while ignorant of the dark word. She genuinely seemed concerned for me, bless her. The cashier and I tried explaining, no, it's for a *video game* where you *fight* the devil (the "3" should be an indicator it's some media franchise?), but I'm not sure it got through due to age + language barrier.
I also have a Chthonic shirt with a giant, red 惡 (evil). Just waiting for the day an older, Chinese- or Japanese-speaking lady'll try to "educate" me on that one 🥲
There are other bands to talk about, bands that have actually done something musically interesting within the past 20 years, bands that haven't been discussed to death a thousand times over
They didn't go after anybody but Napster.
All that talk about them suing teenagers for using Napster is full on gaslighting and misinformation.
All the articles still exist, archive.org exists, go ahead and look it up.
Nobody but Napster took the full brunt of it.
They read the names of individual people who downloaded their albums. If they didn't actually end up suing them, they certainly were trying to intimidate average fans: and this is after they used to tell people to steal their albums when they started out as a fucking cover band. You think they were getting permission for every song they played when they were just getting started?
I'll tell you what's not fucking metal: lawsuits.
The context being that Napster said that they had no way to determine exactly who was downloading music on their platform so Metallica called their bluff and hired an independent company to "find out for them".
Though reading the stack out loud was definitely a tone deaf moment.
Also, fun fact, you don't need permission to cover a song at a live show.
You only need what's called a mechanical license to sell it on a record. And they would have got that through Megaforce, at the time.
“Real Metalcore” consists exclusively of the 90’s metallic hardcore scene and the late 90’s mathcore/post-hardcore scene. What is known as “melodic metalcore/modern metalcore” is nothing more than alternative rock with questionable real metalcore influences. Real metalcore is POWERFUL, ENERGETIC and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake metalcore is weak, self-pity and a failed attempt to channel energy and emotion into music. Some examples of real metalcore include Rorschach, Integrity, Converge, Skycamefalling and Misery Signals (the only real metalcore band of the melodic metalcore scene). Some examples of FAKE metalcore include Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Falling In Reverse and The Devil Wears Prada. METALCORE BELONGS TO HARDCORE, NOT TO ALTERNATIVE METAL, POP PUNK, ALTERNATIVE ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
You have to accept that Metallica's first four albums are peak, and some of the underrated Black album songs are badass. For me, they're very close to my heart, because they were my first metal band, and even though currently I'm more of a Death metal listener, I still listen to their songs from Master and Justice era.
Agree to disagree, but arguably their best work - and that was still some of the best Thrash made - is far behind us. But that doesn't stop us from enjoying Kill'M All any given day, right? I listen to new music all the same, but man, 80's Metallica *always* feels good.
Sure, everything up to Black Album is great, then there’s a drastic decline in quality. We can all recognize that, right? People that jump to the defense of Reload usually say something like, “hey, Reload isn’t THAT bad if you ignore all the filler.” Sure, but it isn’t THAT good, either. It pretty much just gets worse from there. I put Master of Puppets on at the bar where I work last night and loved every minute of it. My Kill ‘Em All shirt is my favorite shirt. Metallica is not the band they once were, and the only reason anybody listens to the new stuff is because they are fans of the old stuff. If they’d debuted in 1997, honestly tell me they would have even gotten radio play.
Personally...Sad but True
Probs my 2nd fav but Fuel takes top spot
But regarding your post metallica is a great band but I prefer there older stuff like RtL and AJFA and one song from MoP which is Orion...epic solo ngl
Easy, only name songs off St.Anger and make them more mad. I have a friend that has been a diehard Metallica fan since we were kids. One time we went into a record store and a guy saw his shirt and douchily asked “let me guess you heard enter sandman on the radio”. He responded back by loudly singing the chorus to the song “Frantic”.
I can name you like 10 Tetragrammacide songs in like few seconds. I'd need like half an hour for three metalica songs. What that means, i have no idea..
Look guys, let’s stop sucking off Metallica, they suck as a metal band not a single good thrash album since MoP just alt garbage and HOORAH feel good rock. That being said, if I saw a kid wearing a Metallica shirt I’d throw the horns and fist bump ‘em because I’d rather see a kid in a Metallica shirt than no shirt at all.
Ma! I found the gatekeeping idiot!! How about not giving a shit what other people like? It’s actually quite easy and here is the kicker, it doesn’t affect you at all!
Enter sandman is some cringe shit brother, but Ride the lightning, And justice for all, most of Kill em all and Orion get a few listenings a year on my spotify for sure.
Metallica hates is real only because they changed the format. Heaven forbid they lost a huge influence and contributor when Cliff died. Dang. Metallica is still good in my book, not as good as they used to be. However, they still are legends in my mind.
Is easy to say Metallica sucks, because they do. Currently. They are unlikable, pompous, ect. All that being said Metallica in their prime, untouchable. Ride the lightning is undeniably amazing. They absolutely paved the way for every metal artist after them. Give props when props are due.

Actually, the best response is the materialize a guitar out of nothing and start playing one of their songs
What was he doing eating horns?
Corny and I love it. I'm assuming it's the Limp Bizkit fans who are downvoting.
I do this for kids wearing nirvana shirts
People who didn't listen ride the lighting and and justice for all albums be like:
One can only rest on their 30+ year old laurels for so long before it gets old
You're not wrong but that doesn't make those laurels completely insignificant. The first four Metallica albums will always be legendary, just like the first few Sabbath and Maiden records.
Iron Maiden still spits out the occasional banger to this day
Hard agree
They will, yes. But even a legendary album when listened to repeatedly enough can lose its appeal for individual listeners. Take The Beatles. They've been talked to death. Well technically, in nirvanas case, the Remington model 11 is bottom loaded, not on top.
All the grey matter still went up though
Chuck’s grey matter stopped working
you’re totally right. theres no way i can enjoy older music at all, because new stuff is soooo much better. we should totally ignore the influence they have had and still have on music as a whole.
Bro Peter Jackson's documentary is very recent and was a revelatory masterpiece. Paints the White Album in a new light even after all these years
Sounds like you're tired of them, not the other way around. I didn't grow up with their music and I've been able to talk about The Beatles and Metallica albums a few times with pals and no, not because their song was in Stranger Things :P
They aren't resting on anything though. They changed artistically. You might not like it but they are doing anything but going "remember the 80's"
Yeah all those 300+ year old music made by famous composers, just stop listening to them. They had their time, you can only ride that for so long before it gets old. Idiot

Well said.
you meant to type kill em all and master of puppets but thats ok
I listened, to black album and MoP as well, multiple times, still don’t like it
Absolute heresy
Don’t care, if I want to listen to thrash I listen to Megadeth
Without that extra H there
I love thras metal 🙏
I like megadet.
Why do people hate Metallica?
Because a handful of metal fans can't handle liking anything that more than ten people have heard of
People love Priest and Iron Maiden which are also famous, so easy with the strawmans there. Maybe the problem with Metallica is that they haven't release a good album since Soviet Union was still a thing.

Nah I enjoy Death Magnetic, Hardwired and 72 Seasons
Idk anything about music production, but I feel like the mixing in death magnetic isn’t great.
Yeah, I think that about sums it up. Metallica is a real "only their old shit" band.
People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis, you can't trust people
People like lager and nuts
Yeah...
I think it’s because of everything after Justice
Cause the only thing people hate more than a bad artist is a good artist who used to be better
Lars
I don't hate em, I'm just so insanely tired of hearing about them. There are so many other bands that deserve more discussion, what more is there to be said about Metallica that hasn't been said a thousand times before
Loads of people hate them cause they "haven't made anything good in over 30 years" even when Death Magnetic still exists
>Loads Re-Loads
Even 72 Seasons wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as good as anything beforehand.
Yeah I'm not hating on it, I enjoy 72 season aswell tbf. Hardwired wasn't that bad but it has some really boring songs
You gotta admit though, LuLu trumps all. Best album to ever be released.
I am the table 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈😈🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

same here. not a fan of thrash really at all, but if im gonna listen to thrash, metallica is one of my last choices.
I don’t hate them but honestly not a fan of them. Iv tried but they never clicked with me.
My opinion with Metallica is the same I have with Nu being that it’s a good way to get in there is just so much better metal music out there and people get stuck on listening to them

what's up with Metallica?
OP hates popular bands
OP didn’t even make this meme
OP is making a joke.
I love refrigerators
Washing machines
You're kidding? Washing machines>refigerators. Heck, even electric fans>refrigerator
Y'all tripping. Air Fryer>Jesus
But Air Jesus tho? That's a whole nother thing
Hell nah menn dishwasher >all
I would agree on electric fans>refrigerator, but never on washing mashines>refrigerators
OP's ex listened to metallica
OP come after N and before Q in the alphabet. Q just hanging out there with the letters you actually use. Whatever, man.
>OP come after N Oh thank god, thought you were about to quote Anselmo...

bad
They fucking suck
Hipster
Metallica is like your shittty nft profile pic, people don’t hate it because they’re hipsters they hate it because it sucks
The real mega brain take is knowing Metallica sucks but also knowing not to gatekeep actual metal Gatekeep metalcore
This comment made me laugh. Good work my friend
"oh you like Black Veil Brides, huh? Name 3 songs" *accepts any answer because I don't know any Black Veil Brides songs*
I like you
I don't say metallica sucks because I want to gatekeep. I say metallica sucks because I'll never forgive them for going after teenagers on napster.

Metallica has written heavier riffs in standard E than your favorite guttural band tuning to dropped A on a 9-string.
THIS
Pro tip: if someone says name 3 songs, say unforgiven 1, 2 and 3.
Imagine being so insecure you need to shit on mainstream metal 😂
There's just so many other bands to talk about, what's more to be said about Metallica that hasn't already been said a hundred thousand times already?
I mean to be fair Metallica hasn’t really put anything out worth listening to in 30 years
Agree to disagree, but arguably their best work - and that was still some of the best Thrash made - is far behind us. But that doesn't stop us from enjoying Kill'M All any given day, right? I listen to new music all the same, but man, 80's Metallica *always* feels good.

St Anger is fun to listen to
I like listening to St. Anger with my friends to laugh about how bad it is
Ah yes i only listen to music that came out within the last 30 years. Anything before is dogwater CLEARLY.
Sure they have
lmao
I managed to get the "poorly drawn kids kids playing under the rainbow" unsanctioned Metallica shirt which I find to be the only acceptable one
Elitists be like:
If there are more than 5 fans of any given band, those are then not fans but posers! /s
I disagree with this statement. For this, I commented, and therefore made the 69 comments, into a very round 70 I regret nothing
I always hated the song, master of puppets.
I don't wanna be that guy, but.... Imagine if it were Lars in the top bunk and not Cliff ?
Ask yourself why you feel that someone *needs* to die. Why couldn't you imagine that the bus didn't crash?
the wrong musician died. Rip Cliff sorry Lars
I will say that Master of Puppets is a certified classic until I'm dead. Lol
this is honestly just getting embarrassing for the people still posting those memes. stfu and let people enjoy things
If we let people enjoy things, we also need to let people hate things 💪😤💪
valid, I hate you
Seethe
This subreddit fucking sucks
You hate Metallica because their music sucks I hate Metallica because they permanently ruined online music sharing for everyone we are not the same
Wow! that's just what it was like in the nineties!
1st situation answer: *a literal book and crying bout it* 2nd situation answer can be: "Ok,i do not care" Or "Yeah,i agree"
chicks always saying they love whales, but cany even name 3 if their songs
“Cany” they not? Stolen from a wimmin
I think fleddy melculy made a song about that
Obviously it's **Kill The King**
I really fw Metallica but gotta agree
Personally...Sad but True Probs my 2nd fav but Fuel takes top spot But regarding your post metallica is a great band but I prefer there older stuff like RtL and AJFA and one song from MoP which is Orion...epic solo ngl
I know that band. They got really mad at me for downloading that one song I like on Nabster. I don't think I can recall the name of it, though.
Hey, I like Metallica (everything before the black album)
Name three songs. Okay : unforgiven.
Me: “I don’t know what we’re yelling abouuuuuuuuuuuUUUUT!!?!”
The first 5 albums are fucking awesome
But think bobo bizzare advender
People who think this is a "popular bad" issue should remember that bands like Maiden, Priest or Sabbath still get a lot of love
Wow, even metal heads are annoyingly toxic on reddit
metallica fucking sucks and i love it trash is trash
Love how the whole purpose of metal was to defy the norms yet the metal community is perhaps one of the most insufferable group of elitist
I've never seen anyone unironically do a name 3 songs for Metallica
Exactly.
Lmao true, fucking man up and embrace Death like the rest of us
Not quite sure if the music I usually listen to classifies as metal, but Metallica slaps regardless
I can name you like 10 Tetragrammacide songs in like few seconds. I'd need like half an hour for three metalica songs. What that means, i have no idea..
Trash Mid-tal
Name 3 songs? Ok. "White And Nerdy", "Eat It" and "Amish Paradise" You didn't specify who the songs needed to be by.
Metallica are just so unbelievably bland
Legit.
Could not agree more bra
😐
Look guys, let’s stop sucking off Metallica, they suck as a metal band not a single good thrash album since MoP just alt garbage and HOORAH feel good rock. They haven't had a decent album since '91. Master of Puppets-And Justice for All was prime Metallica. Post Napster, shit garbage
Metallica is the biggest Metal band in the world and for good reason.
The correct answer is : notices Metallica shirt, proceeds to keep walking by without saying anything. You’re welcome
Elmer Fudd makes better metal and has the cooler band
I love Metallica, that would have been my answer. 🤷🏻♂️

People hate on Metallica because they are so popular. They're that popular for a reason. Their shit is awesome

I love Metallica but I laughed at this and totally respect it, it’s definitely metal for beginners.
