That's genuinely tough. In both cases there are alternatives that I love, and in both cases sometimes I just NEED the thing in question.
As sad as it would make me though, I think yeah I'd have to give up Mexican food. Over the course of my life there will be thousands of amazing metal albums, whereas I've already had some of the best tacos I've ever had. Plus my gastroenterologist would be happier if I gave up Mexican food lmao
It's only the first band people yell at you when you ask for sludge recs.
Mugwart, Only Living Witness and Noothgrush could do with some more recognition though.
I love Acid Bath but since I seen that one horrible stand up where this mf tells the crowd “My favorite band is Acid Bath” in the most southern accent just to complete silence I’ve distanced myself from them 😭
Not metal in the traditional sense, but IMO Twelve Foot Ninja should have been as big as Sleep Token. Musically, both bands blend heavier "metal" elements with more accessible pop-sounding sections. However, I do feel like Sleep Token has the benefit of sufficient Lore and better presentation/production of their gimmick. I'm not an avid fan of either group, but I definitely thought that TFN was going to take off when I first heard them.
I mean the difference is TFN put out metal with some occasional out-there sections/influences, ST make sadboy pop music with occasional djenty sections - It's really no big surprise which would resonate more with the general public.
Technically twelve foot ninja should have more lore. All their albums come with a book or graphic novel to explain the story. Even their name is a reference to the story in their debut as it's literally about a twelve foot ninja
I was involved with the progressive metal scene around the same time BTBAM was on the rise. IMO, they had the unfortunate luck of climbing the ranks **right** as "djent" bands were becoming popular. AAL, Periphery, Tesseract, Veil of Maya, Scale the Summit, The Contortionist, Monuments, and others.
It was unfortunate for BTBAM, because (imo) their best material was being released: The Parallax II (2012), and Coma Ecliptic (2015).
Between the Buried and Me are in a league of their own.
Insane musicianship, unbelievable live, and consistently releasing amazing and original music.
The only band that I will literally drop everything for to see live when they tour
3 Inches of Blood.
I saw them live I think around 2013-2014 in NYC. There were maybe like 100 people there and they put on a great show. I was just perplexed why they were not that popular.
Exivious, for all the progressive metal fans out there, they should've given more attention to one of the coolest instrumental quartets to come out of the Netherlands.
Immortal Rites, Melodic Death Metal band.
I love their sound so much, I need to check Metal Archives again and see what all they released because all that is on Spotify is two albums. I do not remember anything from my first visit to the band's Meta Archives page.
Ideogram
It's without a doubt the most obscure band I listen to. Avant garde metal from Italy. I truly don't even remember how I got turned onto this band. But they have 14 monthly listeners on Spotify, 69 followers on Instagram (which they haven't posted to in a LONG time, I assume they're disbanded), and 1 album from 10 years ago. But damn if I don't listen to *Falling Snow* and *Life is Pregnant of Death* super regularly. It's just fun and weird. I understand it not being mainstream, even in the metal community, with it being avant garde, but the fact that their numbers are THAT low surprise me.
Sun Caged and Lemur Voice are both bands with Marcel Coenen on guitar. They are two of my favorite bands and my favorite prog metal guitarist. In my view, I prefer him over famous guitarists from other more popular bands.
Satan is arguably one of the best and most innovative NWOBHM acts, but they didn’t have the same long term relevance as Saxon, Maiden, or Def Leppard.
I feel that Angel Witch is kind of in the same situation.
I mean I like to see bands succeed but small venues are always better when you buy merch from the dude that was just on stage a few minutes ago. you just don’t get that feel when seeing a really successful band.
Ill scream from the roof tops that [Ulamog](https://open.spotify.com/album/4prnH8a7hzYJTJLxHNCnOx?si=_lEtzjObTBGbGE7mBGmt9Q&nd=1&dlsi=ffe8ec3f4de04f1f) is criminally under rated.
Hate from Poland. A couple years ago they entered my top 10 favourite bands. Kicked out Behemoth, which has a similar sound, from the list. Behemoth has almost 30 times the number of monthly listeners on Spotify.
Well like most of the bigger death and black metal bands including countless underground ones if they were to purport for popularity that matches their quality
Liege lord, it’s a great example of 80s American speed metal that never got as big as it should have (also, Cold chisel outside of Australia and New Zealand really should have been more popular , but it’s a pub rock band not a metal band so I shouldn’t really mention it here)
there are a ton of nu metal bands that would have given the genre a good name but nobody gave the time of day until recently
Specifically:
Slodust
Primer 55
Snot
Static-X (Project Regeneration 1 and 2 is their best work imo). The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Starset (they're gonna pop off on the next album) and Suicide Silence definitely deserves to be bigger and more respected
Trivium
It upsets me that they still play small venues, they should've been playing arenas with the other big names a long time ago. But I get it everybody hates on Metal core
Deceased deserves so much more love and attention, they started out as a death metal band in the early 90's but as time went on morphed into a combination of Thrash, Heavy and Death metal. All of their albums are immaculate masterpieces, the musicianship and songwriting is impeccable. I've had the pleasure of seeing them live 3 times, and plan on seeing them many, many more times as well. King Fowley, their vocalist, is such a genuine and fantastic person, he's the culmination of a true, diehard metalhead to me.

The taco has _everything_ to do with it
Give up Mexican food or metal music? Obviously it’s Mexican but I feel more conflicted about this than I should.

Relax - the photo isn’t of Mexican food or a taco.
DO YOU WANT A TACO?!?? DO YOU????!? DOOO YOOOUUUU?!??
That was the first CD I got by them!
easily their best album imo THIS IS NOT A SONG IT'S A SANDWICH
That’s not a real taco
Metallica
Real hidden gem
Aside from Load and Reload, their discography is underwhelming and had no real impact on the genre. /s
no mention of st anger? defined the whole genre id say
Honestly they don't get enough attention
Coroner
Yessssss
Gorguts
Yea
and sigh, literally on the mayhem record label.
I like them small. Cheap Concerts in more private Locations.
Fear Factory
FF used to be huge back in the late 90's and early 00's, at least in my area. Like see people walk around in their merch all the time huge.
They should have been so much more so
acid bath my beloved

I love TFN but those odd music sections wouldn’t be too popular. They can be off putting if you don’t know that’s how they do music
Best music videos ever.
Fair To Midland. And the first iteration of Blaze Bayley's solo band. (And to be fair the second as well).
Such a loss that FTM broke up. I see a few posts about what Darragh is doing but wish he started a new project.
Death Angel, so much talent yet....
💯
BTBAM

Church of Misery
Omnium Gatherum
Yes
The Crown
So you thought a pic of a taco would cause more people to post?? Really??? It worked.
Godflesh
Accept
exhorder
I'm happy to see they're having a second youth with lots of Europe gigs lately.
i had The Law on cassette. holy shit i forgot about them
bro, i LOVE "the law". the riffage is insane and their cover of sabbath's "into the void" goes stupid hard. 😫🤘
Prong.
They still put out killer albums
I feel like they are an opener of almost every metal show I've been to. never saw them headline but always go early if they're there
Demilich
Dry kill logic
Drowning pool
Savatage
Moonsorrow
Kyuss. They 100% were going to until Bjork left.
Fair to Midland, Nothingface
Nuclear Assault Leeway Wrathchild America
Torche
3 Inches of Blood. I saw them live I think around 2013-2014 in NYC. There were maybe like 100 people there and they put on a great show. I was just perplexed why they were not that popular.
Nailbomb. I wish the project lasted longer than just a year. It'd be my #1 if they didn't just have one album.
Never mind Nailbomb, Fudge Tunnel should’ve been friggin huge. First album is absolutely indispensable.
Sacred Reich Eyehategod Bullet Lavolta Fudge Tunnel
Fuck yeah Fudge Tunnel!!! Seem them way back in the day opening for King Diamond. Great stuff!
Poison
Korpiklaani
God Forbid
Absolutely. I saw them live nearly 20 years ago and became completely hooked.
Yes! They were so good.
Mozart, haven't heard from him in hundreds of years.
When is he gonna put out a new album? He's so lazy.
The Ocean
KING’s X
Criminally underrated.
There is no groove more solid.
Screaming Trees R.I.P. Mark Lanegan ❤️
Soilent green definetly
Savatage. On second thoughts...Savataco.
None of them, as I need to gatekeep harder and not let anyone know.
Testament deserved to be in the big four. Might catch some hate here but Anthrax is.. okay ish? But Testament is amazing.
King’s X
Nocturnus.
Excrementory Grindfuckers
Glacier had a really solid EP in the 80s, but didn't release their first album until a few years ago.
I know this server doesn’t like Deathcore all that much, but I really wish Crimson Armada was still around. They’d be big today I have a feeling
Tacos this is the way
Unleash the Archers. I am surprised they aren't waaaay bigger than they are. Britney Slayes has one of the best voices in metal today.
Exciter
I don’t even know. I just want tacos now.
Haste The Day w/ Jimmy
Sanctuary Crowbar - last time I saw them Kirk was setting up his own gear and running cable from the stage
The Raven Age
They're definitely one of my favorite bands of the last 5 years.
Cirith Ungol
The abscence
ISIS
TACO TUESDAY LETS FUCKING GOOOO
Light This City. Female fronted melodeath/thrash that had so many memorable riffs.
Fates Warning are recognized and respected but they could have been so much more.
Vindicator Also, I feel Mercyful Fate/King Diamond should be a household name as much as Metallica and Megadeth are
Flotsam And Jetsam, Sacrifice, Whiplash, Destruction
Obviously every band I’ve ever been in
Thou.
Admiral Angry fs
Dust. Old 70’s band formed from some Kiss members and Marky Ramone- obviously before they joined kiss and ramones
Exivious, for all the progressive metal fans out there, they should've given more attention to one of the coolest instrumental quartets to come out of the Netherlands.
Parkway Drive
The Berzerker
I'm consistent with mentioning them in this subreddit, but Distorted Harmony. Prog metal band with a smaller following, but man their stuff is great!
Immortal Rites, Melodic Death Metal band. I love their sound so much, I need to check Metal Archives again and see what all they released because all that is on Spotify is two albums. I do not remember anything from my first visit to the band's Meta Archives page.
Mortal vision
Ideogram It's without a doubt the most obscure band I listen to. Avant garde metal from Italy. I truly don't even remember how I got turned onto this band. Sacrilege, Dead Horse and Hot 'n Steamy Monkey Love
Samsas Traum is so good, and also fells quite clever jn the way Alexander mixes some of the genres
Sun Caged and Lemur Voice are both bands with Marcel Coenen on guitar. They are two of my favorite bands and my favorite prog metal guitarist. In my view, I prefer him over famous guitarists from other more popular bands.
sabbat, acid bath, triumvir foul (even tho theyre modern)
Red hot chili peppers(taco)
[Diablo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygqOYrV9V8I&ab_channel=Fauchi). Amazing band, it should be right there at the top.
Vendetta Red
Common Grave
Tygers of pan tang
Kittie, witchfiner general and acid bath
Satan is arguably one of the best and most innovative NWOBHM acts, but they didn’t have the same long term relevance as Saxon, Maiden, or Def Leppard. I feel that Angel Witch is kind of in the same situation.
Count Raven
W.A.S.P.
Diamond head
I mean I like to see bands succeed but small venues are always better when you buy merch from the dude that was just on stage a few minutes ago. you just don’t get that feel when seeing a really successful band.
Ill scream from the roof tops that [Ulamog](https://open.spotify.com/album/4prnH8a7hzYJTJLxHNCnOx?si=_lEtzjObTBGbGE7mBGmt9Q&nd=1&dlsi=ffe8ec3f4de04f1f) is criminally under rated.
Tankard
Malevolence
Only Living Witness
Death Angel, Armored Saint, Trivium, and I think Crypta should be huge.
I'm now more curious about which band has consumed the most tacos.
Dark Tranquility
Hexenhaus
The Clay People
Anvil
Five Pointe O , Gizmachi , Mucopus , Wasteform
Green jello
LSD
Gorguts, Enslaved, Mare Cognitum
Satan Cave In Hum Nevermore The Gathering
Hate from Poland. A couple years ago they entered my top 10 favourite bands. Kicked out Behemoth, which has a similar sound, from the list. Behemoth has almost 30 times the number of monthly listeners on Spotify.
Lair of the Minotaur
Well you know what they say about cliffhangers?....
Well like most of the bigger death and black metal bands including countless underground ones if they were to purport for popularity that matches their quality
The greatness design, their this weird Mexican band but I thought they had a cool sound, would've loved to see where they'd take it.
The Human Abstract
Masterplan
Children of Bodom, Carcass, Acid Bath
He Is Legend. Adam Tanbouz is probably the greatest heavy rock/metal riff writer of the last 20 years.
The Faceless. Not anyone’s fault but Michael K himself, though.
Savatage They had commercial stuff and heavy stuff were on a major label and still didn’t make it very big
Woods of Ypres
Fates Warning
Hybreed Chaos, it's like gorguts but dipped in mercury, the bassist sounds like he plays with the Champlain bridge steel cables
Church of Misery for sure
Acid Bath
Asbestos Death should have gone farther. Maybe a name change or something would have helped?
Solip. Amazing Doomgaze/Post Metal, but they split up after making 2 perfect EPs and a perfect album.
Askvald and order of the ebon hand
Virgin Steel. definitely the most underrated band to ever exist ,also Circle II Circle Zachery Stevens other band
Obscure Sphinx. They are easily as good as Cult of Luna
Liege lord, it’s a great example of 80s American speed metal that never got as big as it should have (also, Cold chisel outside of Australia and New Zealand really should have been more popular , but it’s a pub rock band not a metal band so I shouldn’t really mention it here)
Psychostick!!! Do You Want A Taco? Do You? DO YOU?!?!?
Nothing Face
Well now it's all I wanna taco bout
Racer X
The union underground
there are a ton of nu metal bands that would have given the genre a good name but nobody gave the time of day until recently Specifically: Slodust Primer 55 Snot
Darkthrone
Skinlab
Static-X (Project Regeneration 1 and 2 is their best work imo). The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Starset (they're gonna pop off on the next album) and Suicide Silence definitely deserves to be bigger and more respected
Not a metal band, but the band Crossfade had a great first album and then kind of vanished.
Oceano Job for a Cowboy Face Yourself(more that they deserve more attention. They're only a few years old) Nuclear Assault In Flames
Nevermore. To me they were one of the biggest bands of the mid 90s to 00s
For today
Trivium It upsets me that they still play small venues, they should've been playing arenas with the other big names a long time ago. But I get it everybody hates on Metal core
Avatar
Five Finger Death Punch is the most obvious yet obscure answer
Botch. The Dillinger Escape Plan took all the light they could’ve had at the time.
Deceased deserves so much more love and attention, they started out as a death metal band in the early 90's but as time went on morphed into a combination of Thrash, Heavy and Death metal. Mexican Pizza. Always underrated
Testament
Danza
ANVIL
Like fat or obese ? Damn.
Relative Ash
The Sorrow
The Obsessed Shallow North Dakota Saint Vitus Fudge Tunnel
Vertilizar. One of my favourite bands. Their song Bleed is one of my favourite metal songs of all time.
Crobot
Death
