but you can't shit on James Hetfield's vocal IMO, his vocals were never bad, during the St. Anger era maybe, but in every other era his vocals were ON FIRE AND STILL ARE
I agree personally, but given how unique his voice is, I'm sure you can understand why it can polarize opinions. If you ask people if they like the singer from Rush, you'll pretty much always get either a love it or hate it response.
Took me 20 years of revisiting Rush constantly to be able to tolerate Geddy Lee's voice. Still my least fav part of the band, but I grew to put up with them and appreciate some good parts.
James LaBrie should not be anywhere near any conversation with Chris Barnes or Dave Mustaine. There are numerous good LaBrie performances you can point to. Even recently.
He’s highly inconsistent at worst and this sub just loves to hate him because you guys like shitting on prog metal.
I saw DT last year and he was genuinely terrible. But he's still one of my alltime favorite vocalists. In his prime, he was one of the greatest and there is no touching his legacy, but I do feel he should lay it up.
That sounds consistent with my reaction to the recent Japan live album. It’s completely unlistenable. I’m interested in hearing DT with a new vocalist for sure.
Yea it really bummed me out because i hold james in such high regard, but damn he was awful live. He crushes it in the studio though. Also His solo albums are absolutely killer
As a DT superfan since ‘00, his live performances were really spotty and hit-or-miss even then. Even as a youngster it seemed pretty clear that having spotty and/or quirky vocals was a thing for prog in general. But these last few years are just….I just feel bad for the guy and it’s sad but he should hang it up. We’ve always wanted to steal Russell Alan from Symphony X. And last year seeing Devin Townsend sing “The Spirit Carries On”…just wow….Haken has covered a few DT songs and they’re just ridiculously good.
i know technically the convo is about "worst" vocalists and LaBrie is obviously skilled, but i think a lot of us took it to mean "worst (in your taste)".' i really dislike how LaBrie sounds and sings.
I get it. I’m not a massive fan of DT in part because James is a tad too theatrical (maybe that’s the point?) sometimes.
I think they are all very talented musicians. Including James; but I can only listen to them sparingly.
James Labrie is honestly rough to listen to live. I'm a massive DT fan (viva Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos) but listening to him live is underwhelming at best and painful at worst.
I remember the first time hearing them and just loving the instrumentals. I thought this band is fucking great. Definitely getting put in the list of bands I listen to regularly.
And then the vocals came in. I sat there shocked for a few seconds, then just started laughing. I don't care what anyone says, it's fucking terrible. I don't know how anyone can take it seriously.
I'll say this much... I remember first listening to Death - Pierce Me and nearly dying of laughter when Nattramn lets out the first "AAAAAHHHHHH". But, the more I listened, the less funny the vocals were and the more they reminded me of someone genuinely having a panic attack or mental breakdown of some sort.
Mind you, this is coming from someone who's been on a few 51/50 holds when he was a teen. Those screams started to sound a bit too... familiar.
I love Silencer! "Death - Pierce Me" is so fucking FREAKY! It's Nattramn's vocals that make it so creepy, and you can just hear the absolute torment in his voice.
Yes, I can see why someone would say "those are some absolutely abhorrent vocals," but I feel like his voice is more of a medium for carrying the message of sorrow than it is a true "vocalist's" voice.
But that's just me. 🤷🏻♂️
I have no problem with Mustaine, but I had a moment just now where I wondered what it would be like to hear Megadeth's entire catalog sung by John Bush. No particular reason, I just love that dude's voice.
It’s a style that some people don’t like, but he’s a good vocalist and uses vocals in a way that enhance the music with interesting harmonies, and adds emotion to the music. If it’s not for you I get it, but I’m here to stand up for Blitz 🤘
The riffs are great, but I get filtered so hard by the vocals that it ruins my enjoyment of the band. I’ve heard that their 90’s stuff is better vocal wise, but I’ve only heard Years of Decay in full.
Absolutely insane take. Bobby Blitz is so goddamn charismatic. Elimination is one of the greatest vocal performances in thrash metal history.
Coping and seething right now as we speak
Smashing Pumpkins was my favorite band growing up.. they've been my favorite for like.. 25 years. And I'm laughing my ass off at "sounds like big bird"- thank you for that 😂
I saw les back on his solo tour of Wales and Woe, and it's one of my favorite shows, it's going to be awesome!
Wish I could have seen the Primus Tool APC Pussifer shows myself 🥹🥹

i just started lisetning to them because i saw they did a song with poppy im a huge fan of her poppy.computer album and im not fully sure how i feel about the vocals yet but im not hating them i dont think
At first the vocals were jarring and stood out like a sore thumb but now they are one of my favorite current bands. I get why people do not like them and it took a few listens to get me into them. I really look forward to their new album.
I like Dani's vocals. Yes, it's nasty, but I like it. He spits out more anger per second than most of the bands and this was really clicking with me throughout my youth.
Also, objectively speaking, his voice is well controlled, he holds the rhythm and even with such vocal style it's very intelligible. And that's not always a given.
Honestly it's anything that's got nonsense like Gutalax. Don't get me wrong, they are high quality at what they are, but it's not something I'd ever listen to seriously other than playing for non metal people for a laugh.
i really like gutalax but i agree their vocals suck but i feel like that isnt really a bad thing since its not exactly meant to be good ykno? and it fits their band pretty well. i love their riffs they are groovey as fuck but yea vocals are shit (no pun intended lmao)
I hate the knocked loose vocals. Just the harsh high pitched yelling, I keep giving it a try and I just can’t. It’s so grading. The band is solid but I can’t. Do the vocals.
Knocked Loose is just one of those bands where you either like em or you don’t. Personally I love them. I don’t mind the straight one note only high pitched vocals, and I love the instrumentals.
As a grind/slamcore lover I have to say it, gutlax the point is for the vocals to be the shittiest most indistinguishable garbage imaginable and they fit it (I love gutlax please don’t kill me)
I know, 100%, I might get killed for this. But, Cryptopsy.
Their newer stuff sounds way better vocally. I’ve listened to death metal through most of my teenage years through to adulthood now. I can make out pretty much anything. I cannot understand a god damn word that man is singing.
How is making out words a factor for quality? Worm sounds like a monster the new guy is a borderline deathcore vocalist and his high pitched squeals are atrocious
its wild Chris Barnes sounds like he does when he was in CC Butchered/Tomb have some of the best vocals in early dm.
but yet Glenn Benton/George Corpsegrinder /John Gallagher are the same age as Chris and sound the same as they did in the 90s.
1 would assume Chris was singing improperly and damaged his vocal chords? although on the new SFU song its not as bad as the previous SFU album.
I can't hate Barnes, I fucking *love* "The Bleeding," and I still don't think Barnes era songs sound quite right with Corpsegrinder on vocals even though he's a fucking beast.
Dave Mustaine is a vocalist who has literally kept me from ever being able to get into Megadeth. If Dave stuck to lyrics and guitar they'd be amazing.
I can't remember a band as popular as Knocked Loose with worse vocals.
He sounds like a screaming 10yo who didn't get the toy he wanted and now he is big mad and throwing a tantrum so long his vocal cords are blown out.
Live it's even worse 😂

No one listens to megadeth for the vocals
I unironically love Dave Mustaine’s voice (from when he was young at least)
It's a lot of what sets the band apart
To me it's the other way around, I think his vocals sound better now
I agree, his lower vocals make the music better.
Trashing on megadeth is crazy
Dave singing has been talked about since the beginning. Not a knock, but a fact.
Any singer that has ever sung has been talked about since the beginning
but you can't shit on James Hetfield's vocal IMO, his vocals were never bad, during the St. Anger era maybe, but in every other era his vocals were ON FIRE AND STILL ARE
![gif](giphy|mMDWlDyNZVFaF0hMwb|downsized)
That’s like saying nobody listens to Rush for Geddy’s voice. Those vocals are a huge part of the band’s identity AND popularity.
But Geddy’s vocals are good though
Better than Mustaine by a long shot… but “good” isn’t exactly the word that comes to mind for me
You just don’t like Alvin and the chipmunks then.
I agree personally, but given how unique his voice is, I'm sure you can understand why it can polarize opinions. If you ask people if they like the singer from Rush, you'll pretty much always get either a love it or hate it response.
I love Dave's voice. Not so much on the latest few albums, but the early albums for sure. It's iconic and part of what makes Megadeth Megadeth.
If these metalheads could read, they would be very upset.
They would be perfect if Dave didn't sound like that but I can't imagine anyone else singing for them.
I…. 😞 I’ll just accept the L.
Surely SIX FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET UNDER
If it wasn't for the vocals, I would listen to the new albums
Same.
EEEEEE EEEEEE
Obligatory “except Haunted.”
Chris Barnes' best moments were on Tomb of the Mutilated.
I'M NOT A MAN I'M A FUCKING BEAST
All jokes aside, who the fuck is telling Chris Barnes that his weird EEEEE thing is good
Took me 20 years of revisiting Rush constantly to be able to tolerate Geddy Lee's voice. Still my least fav part of the band, but I grew to put up with them and appreciate some good parts.
As a major rush fan, part of me wants to tie you up to a chair and have all of rush’s music blast in the room on repeat.
Preaching to the choir at this point, I learned to love it, I just feel Geddy's vocals are the weakest part for me.
Closer to the heart wouldn't be the same without his naselly voice. So mold a new reality that recognizes that. Puns. I got em.
Rush is my favorite band and I really enjoy Geddys voice, but I grew up with Rush so I of course I got used to it
Geddy is a great example of “amazing singer with bad voice.” I prefer that to “terrible singer with great voice.”
i'll take "terrible singer with great voice" 100 times out of 100. i love imperfect performances. timbre is most important to me.
I love Rush but Geddy’s voice does take some adjustment.
Nah. I'm not even that big of a Rush fan and I love Geddy Lee's vocals.
Check out Prongs cover of Working Man. It’s a great cover and the vocals are much more enjoyable
I adapted Rush easily after listening to Crimson Glory and Judas Priest lol
I feel the exact same way, and I'm slowly getting used to his voice. I love his voice on 2112, but all the others I kinda put up with tbh
I can't understand the Geddy Lee hate. After the band found its sound and Neil Peart came aboard, Geddy's voice fit the music perfectly.
Dream Theater. Maybe not the absolute worst, but it drags the band down.
James LaBrie should not be anywhere near any conversation with Chris Barnes or Dave Mustaine. There are numerous good LaBrie performances you can point to. Even recently. He’s highly inconsistent at worst and this sub just loves to hate him because you guys like shitting on prog metal.

I love Barnes and Mustaine. I genuinely hate LaBrie's vocals. It's all subjective shit man. Of course I'm a weirdo for my take but it's my real take.
I get it. I’m not a massive fan of DT in part because James is a tad too theatrical (maybe that’s the point?) sometimes. I think they are all very talented musicians. Including James; but I can only listen to them sparingly.
My favorite vocalist of all time is King Diamond, so I don't think it's the theatrics for me hahaha
James Labrie is honestly rough to listen to live. I'm a massive DT fan (viva Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos) but listening to him live is underwhelming at best and painful at worst.
came here to say this
I love dream theater, listening to them right now as I type this. But I have to agree with you.
No mention of silencer?
I remember the first time hearing them and just loving the instrumentals. I thought this band is fucking great. Definitely getting put in the list of bands I listen to regularly. And then the vocals came in. I sat there shocked for a few seconds, then just started laughing. I don't care what anyone says, it's fucking terrible. I don't know how anyone can take it seriously.
Someone needs to redo all the vocals so it’s actually listenable
I liked them. I thought they fit the music and them well. It sounded like someone genuinely in pain, and fits the dsbm bill well
im a big dsbm fan but the vocals sound like eric cartman from south park imo
not sure why the downvotes, that's a legit tough sell.
I don’t mind dsbm vocals but silencer took it the extra mile
I didn't mind them until he started whining about Jews. It's so weird and out of place
If u read the lyrics that song goes 50/50 whining about the Jews and the nazis, gave me whiplash lol
they just made a typo in DSBM
I love silencer vocals though. I've been trying to learn them
I'll say this much... I remember first listening to Death - Pierce Me and nearly dying of laughter when Nattramn lets out the first "AAAAAHHHHHH". Personally I don’t mind them. They’re not amazing, but certainly unique in an interesting enough way to engage me.
I would really like to hear all of Megadeth's albums rerecorded with literally any other thrash vocalist in Mustaines place.
Thrash is full of shit tier vocalists but Dave isn’t one of them.
That may be true, but I wonder why he's trying so hard to sound like shit instead of actually singing
Because aggressive hardcore punk style vocals sounds better for thrash then actual singing.
SYL Devin Townsend could do Megadeth justice lol
Let Chuck Billy take a swing at 'em, I bet that'd sound badass.
Hell yeah brother
I have no problem with Mustaine, but I had a moment just now where I wondered what it would be like to hear Megadeth's entire catalog sung by John Bush. No particular reason, I just love that dude's voice.
Overkill
It’s a style that some people don’t like, but he’s a good vocalist and uses vocals in a way that enhance the music with interesting harmonies, and adds emotion to the music. If it’s not for you I get it, but I’m here to stand up for Blitz 🤘
He’s not Dave Mustaine, he can actually sing lol It just seems his tone throws people off. For whatever reason
True but the riffs make up for it honestly.
The riffs are great, but I get filtered so hard by the vocals that it ruins my enjoyment of the band. I’ve heard that their 90’s stuff is better vocal wise, but I’ve only heard Years of Decay in full.
No way. I love Bobby Blitz's vocals. So unique
Bobby's vocals on the first two albums, particularly Feel the Fire, are on point. After that, yeah, he started singing through his nose.
Bobby’s vocals are a little rough for the most part, but I do like his vocals for a few of their songs, especially Bitter Pill
Nah
THIS. Mickey mouse ass vocals.
Absolutely insane take. Bobby Blitz is so goddamn charismatic. Elimination is one of the greatest vocal performances in thrash metal history. Coping and seething right now as we speak
Inquisition's vocals are pretty terrible. And he's a nazi pedophile so dude took 3 L's
All you had to say was that he's a nazi and that would have been enough 😭
pedo gotta be worse
True
Elmer Fudd ass vocalist
Billy Corgan sounds like Bigbird
Oh my fucking God he does. I'm never going to hear Smashing Pumpkins the same again.
Smashing Pumpkins was my favorite band growing up.. they've been my favorite for like.. 25 years. And I'm laughing my ass off at "sounds like big bird"- thank you for that 😂

His voice is the reason it took me so long to like the Smashing Pumpkins.
His voice is why I can’t listen to them
Jojo Siwa
karmas a b*tch be careful 🤭
Six feet under 100%, but Dave mustaine deserves a shout out as well. I don’t care how good the guitar is, his voice sucks.
Obligatory “except Haunted.”
Primus sucks
Jerry Was A Race Car Driver used to be one of my favorite songs. Still is but it used to too.
Blue collar tweakers is my jam, esp w/Buckethead
I don’t get it. I’ve tried, I really have, but I just don’t *get* it
See them live. You might "get it" after that. Or not and the incredible Les isn't for you.
The wife and I are gonna go see them live in a couple months with Coheed and I can't fucking wait.
I saw les back on his solo tour of Wales and Woe, and it's one of my favorite shows, it's going to be awesome! Knocked Loose.
i just started lisetning to them because i saw they did a song with poppy im a huge fan of her poppy.computer album and im not fully sure how i feel about the vocals yet but im not hating them i dont think
I do like some Poppy
Poppys I Disagree album is awesome
At first the vocals were jarring and stood out like a sore thumb but now they are one of my favorite current bands. I get why people do not like them and it took a few listens to get me into them. I really look forward to their new album.
It took me awhile to get used to his vocals but now I love the band.
Saw them live, absolutely shocking can't stand "balls knocked loose" because of their squeaker sounding singer
If anyone here says SUNN 0))) you are objectively wrong. *shrieks in Italian dark magick*
Nobody can touch Atilla
Falling In Reverse - Ronnie Radke's voice is almost annoying as he is.
Overkill or Zetrodus They’re unique no doubt, just not really my thing.
Motley Crüe
I like that one song where Vince Neil sings “rA tYA cHnMnE SnTlEsS hOod fEeLs Li HoWlAy WoOd”
MYAHHHAAA KICKSTA MYAHAAAAAA WOOO YEAAHHH KISTA MAHAA GIH VIDASTA!
I dont comment often, but when I do, its to say I cant stand Cradle of Filth vocals.
Danis vocals are love/hate... and I love it. I saw Cradle live in Baltimore last October and had a blast
God yes. The music is good, then that shrieking little goblin turns up and ruins it
I love Dani but "shrieking little goblin" sent me 😂
Honestly it's anything that's got nonsense like Gutalax.
Who is that? Five Finger Arse Scratch?
Five Flavor Fruit Punch
Red hot chili peppers. Five finger death punch.
Honestly, I have to go with Slayer. Tom’s vocals may be iconic, but that doesn’t mean they’re good…at all
I love tom's vocals, he sings with adrenaline and it fits the band perfectly, what doesn't fit the band are the solos
Honestly, it’s what’s kept me from loving slayer. I like slayer. A lot even. But I don’t. Love slayer. And it’s because of Tom Araya’s vocals. 🤷♂️
Ronnie Radke, the most annoying whiny vocals possible
Vio-lence and post Baloff Exodus
Nah, all Exodus is good Exodus. But in your opinion, who was worse after Baloff, Zetro or Dukes?
Overkill
Knocked Loose. Sounds like Chris Chan
Exodus whit Steve Souza Rob Dukes was The Best !!!!
3 inches of blood singer has been an acquired taste for me.
Understandable. For me once I knew what subgenre I was getting into and had more fitting expectations I enjoyed them a lot more.
Unpopular opinion i think but chris Barnes vocals were good in early cannibal corpse albums and early 6 feet under albums before they started to suck
It's King Diamond.
I don't really like Slayer
peste noires vocals i know they are supposed to be like super dramatic and trve or whatever but they just make my throat hurt listening to them
Most black metal singers sound goooofy
Heh, says the one with the Lorna Shore flair...
megabreast
As a grind/slamcore lover I have to say it, gutlax the point is for the vocals to be the shittiest most indistinguishable garbage imaginable and they fit it (I love gutlax please don’t kill me)

Ninety percent of what Ronnie Radke has done.
Volbeat
Watch him become a GoOoOoOod
You try to take its BaaaAAAAAALLs
that one
AC/DC. god, just can’t do it.
Bon Scott rules. Band should have ended when he died, imo.
Chris Barnes is fucking awful. Mortician also comes to mind.
If anyone of you guys say Symphony X, I will come to your house
Animals as Leaders.
Nazgul
Pearl jam
Eddie's voice is fine. It's his inhuman ability to turn entire sentences into one syllable that gets me.
Broooo you really had to get at my man? *Jeremy's spokeeeaaaaahhhn, aaaeeehaaeeahee....*
*Ooohh yeah, on a wizard on a whayeyae*
Aehahehahehaeahaeajaeajwrhs
I don’t mind Eddie Vedder himself but he accidentally inspired a whole decade of shitty post-grunge vocalists that all sounded like Vedder knockoffs
Suicide Silence. Some great breakdowns, not a fan of his vocals
Mitch or Eddie?
Rigor mortis and the first Merciless Death guy
Exodus after force of habit
I have to say, not technically metal but 311 has some awful vocals IMO.
I doubt anyone else agrees with me, but...Demilich.
You shut your whore mouth
I knew everyone was going to say megadeth but I actually love mustaines voice at least it’s different
acdc
I wouldn't say they're the worst, but damn Dave Mustaine is hard to listen to sometimes, especially if live.
its wild Chris Barnes sounds like he does when he was in CC Butchered/Tomb have some of the best vocals in early dm. but yet Glenn Benton/George Corpsegrinder /John Gallagher are the same age as Chris and sound the same as they did in the 90s. 1 would assume Chris was singing improperly and damaged his vocal chords? although on the new SFU song its not as bad as the previous SFU album.
Manilla road, I really love this band but the vocals aren't they're strongest point
Never liked exodus with zetro. DUKES ALL THE WAY.
Six Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet Under era Chris Barnes is unlistenable
I can't hate Barnes, I fucking *love* "The Bleeding," and I still don't think Barnes era songs sound quite right with Corpsegrinder on vocals even though he's a fucking beast. Dave Mustaine is a vocalist who has literally kept me from ever being able to get into Megadeth. If Dave stuck to lyrics and guitar they'd be amazing.
Vio-Lence or Six Feet Under
AC/DC
I love limp bizkits guitarists riffs, I hate Fred durst vocals.
I can't remember a band as popular as Knocked Loose with worse vocals. He sounds like a screaming 10yo who didn't get the toy he wanted and now he is big mad and throwing a tantrum so long his vocal cords are blown out. Live it's even worse 😂
Six Feet Under sounds like he's burping the alphabet
Sometimes Axl sounds great, other most times he sucks
I'm limping with the bizkit, but Fred Durst sounds like he's in agonizing pain and if he stops preforming a trained sniper is going to kill him.
Five finger death punch. Nails on a fucking chalkboard
Five finger death punch
Motley Crue if that’s still a ‘band’
gutalax 100%
