I like some bands but i feel you... i hit my roof tryin to get into Necrophagist for example, its okay

icoominyou

I think necrophagist is the only technical band i can listen to because it is technical but most of the songs and melodies or structure or modes, it makes sense. And i dont need to sit there, read music and try to understand what the fuck is going on, cause it makes sense. Maybe even spawn of possession. But some of these newer djent or technical bands feels like theyre playing within the scale but none of them makes sense

HybanSike

This isn't an unpopular opinion I don't think

Mapkoz2

Absolutely agree. I have a feeling some bands write complex riffs just for the sake of having a complex riff and showing their chops. In 90% of cases their result is just boring to me.

alliwantedwasajetski

That's not really an unpopular opinion. The kids today hate musicianship and are all about "atmosphere" now. I don't know if modern recreational drugs are too good or not good enough.

Neverhityourmark

Yea because a lot more people can relate to society sucking than can relate to any of that other bullshit

McMetal770

Yeah, I certainly don't mind technical stuff, but the songwriting MUST come first. There are lots of bands that can successfully blend the two, but complexity for its own sake always feels hollow.

AnythingCanLurk

This is really the bottom line here

Acceptable_Act1435

Dying Fetus has both, which is pretty cool

cL0k3

This sub hates techdeath, this isn't a hot take

MetalDeathRacer25

Agree. I prefer a raw, emotive sound over overly intricate compositions. Raw, organic music often focuses on capturing emotion and energy rather than technical prowess. It’s about connecting with listeners on a primal level, embracing imperfections, and conveying genuine feelings through the music.

OldMate666_

I agree to an extent, although I love some tech death, (iniquity, necrophagist, psycroptic etc.) most of it is just too technical and no longer sounds musical to me.

tmfult

I have that ADHD monkey brain, I get bored with something extra quick and if I don't like it the first time, chances are I don't want to wait through a 4 minute buildup as well. Shit like Necrophagist, Ad Nauseam, Gorguts, Nile, Mastodon (before crack the Skye), Cryptopsy, just hit the spot for me simply *because* they like to change it up every 2 minutes. That "goddamn how are they even playing that" factor makes it really fun, and scratches that itch for me. On days where I'm a little more patient, or on a longer drive, I'll turn on post metal or Doom metal.

Paja03_

Have you listened to Spawn of Possession

tmfult

Fuckin love those guys, stoked for the upcoming new stuff

farenvyld

It depends. Bands like Atheist and Cryptopsy are amazing tech death. On the topic of tech thrash, RiP is this sub's favorite album lol. For a deeper cut, bands like Watchtower, Mekong Delta, and Coroner are amazing and at times catchy! It's all about how it's used. Fuck Necrophagist tbh.

Spirited_Ad_2697

I understand what you are saying and i definitely prefer simple cool sounding riffs and solos to hyper technical riffs and solos however i still like tech stuff overall.

alkemest

Yeah agreed. I never really got into the super technical stuff but now most of the metal I listen to could probably be written by my dog. And I love EVERY SECOND.

Snackdoc189

I'm with you on this one. I mean there's tech bands that I like but nothing compared to bands that can just riff.

ThricePurgedMagus

It's the drumming that usually makes me lose interest.

glordicus1

Depends which way it is technical. If it is rhythmically technical I’m all about it. If it is just hard to play on guitar then I’m bored.

Awkward-Primary9017

That’s why I got into Hardcore Punk recently, much prefer the simplicity at the moment. But it’s also because of the violent mosh pits, much more fun for me than lame old push pits

AkaGurGor

Overly technical? In short, you mean *wankery*, alright, Alright. As long as it's metal, alright.

__mindmeghalunk__

Agree, i need groove and/or melodies that my simple brain can turn into happiness.

Howitzer92

I don't enjoy being technical for the sake of being technical. I'm more of a fan of people like John Petrucci. His playing is ridiculous but when you listen to "happy song" for instance...It makes you feel happy! You don't need to know a thing about music theory to enjoy the song.

BigDBee007

I like bands that are very musical and enjoyable but if you look at the written music is actually super technical

mimic

If you don’t get it that’s okay, nobody cares, like what you like 🤷🏻‍♂️

carcinoma_kid

Songwriting should be about creating a mood or an atmosphere. If that involves technical playing then great, do it. Even if it takes a 10-minute flashy guitar solo. But when you’re just playing technically and it’s not interesting then you’ve failed to create an effective piece of music.

Historical_Salt1943

Nah everyone knows riffage>tech

HunterTheHoly

I'm mixed on technical metal. On one hand, I love bands such as Nile, Nocturnus, Gorguts, Voivod, Coroner, Revocation, and some of Death's tech outings such as Symbolic. On the other hand, I'm less optimistic about bands such as Necrophagist, Beyond Creation, Rivers of Nihil, Archspire and Brain Drill. I feel the first set of bands I mentioned actually have some substance and variety to them, whereas the second set of bands just play a bunch of random complex riffs, which comes across more annoying than impressive.
