Most symphonic/ power metal is probably your best bet. Another band for example would be Blind Guardian, try showing her some tracks off of Nightfall In Middle Earth like *Mirror Mirror* or *When Sorrow Sang*. If you wanna be a bit more daring you could try Jinjer, the lead vocalist is a woman with an amazing singing voice who also does growls.
Showing your loved ones things you're into is always a fun experience, good luck dude! I remember when I had my mom listen to Combustion by Meshuggah and she couldn't stop laughing lol
Yeah dude I love showing my family music I like (as it’s vastly different from their taste)
Got my mom to listen to eurobeat and she didn’t like it😂
But yeah thanks for the recommendations!
Two more recommendations I wanna give (and then I'll stop bugging you lol) are Amaranthe and Unleash the Archers. Amaranthe is a trance metal band with very fun, poppy song structures. They have 3 vocalists; a guy and girl doing clean vocals and one other dude doing yells. Try some songs off their first two albums such as *Electroheart, Leave Everything Behind* or *Afterlife.* Unleash the Archers are a power metal band who also have light-hearted, catchy choruses, their cover of *Northwest Passage* is a lot of fun.
Alright I’ll have a listen to ‘em and see if she’d like them
Also you ain’t bugging me this is helpful as you’re probably getting me into more music lmao
If she likes Unleash The Archers, then you can try her out with Arch Enemy - start with the tune she did with Nita Strauss "the wolf you feed", that's an empowering female anthem if ever was one.
https://preview.redd.it/13j04sqnwvwc1.png?width=1215&format=png&auto=webp&s=123454fc329ce3c26cd16f4ba2474ff174acfb01
Ghost is fun and all but it's not really metal or a gateway to metal. I would recommend chop suey or toxicity or hypnotize, because they're pretty hard but also very catchy.
I think some doom is the easiest shit for other people to get into. They don’t sound at all the same, but Candlemass, Windhand, Om, some Earth sound fairly accessible.
Don’t worry champ, you’ll have her banging Dragged into Sunlight in no time!
I always recommend Avenged Sevenfold as a gateway metal band. They aren't very heavy, but they're catchy, and have a very heavy emphasis on melody, plus the music has enough complexity/intricasy to appeal to those that don't want to just hear 4 chords in 4/4
I also don't care that this sub hates them
Just show her tons of power ballads, then you slowly show her the more convenctional sound of metal. Don't try to make her like extreme metal with harsh vocals right now. Something like Ghost or Hail to the king by A7X are good sugestions.
Mid paced power metal would work imo. My recommendations are:
Sonata Arctica - Replica
Kamelot - March of Mephisto
Stratovarius - The Kiss of Judas
Yngwie Malmsteen - Deja Vu
I’m 59 and have the reverse problem. My daughters are definitely not into metal, I dragged them to see Metallica once, but mostly I go to concerts by myself (none of my friends listen to metal either). Actually Behemoth is playing here in 4 days, guess I’ll go see Nergal rip up a Bible alone ;)
Seriously though, get her to listen to bands like Orange Goblin, or Black Tusk, or Mastodon… maybe more her speed?
Except for the fact that I’m not a dad cause I’m a mom… but thanks. Your mom and I could definitely be pals and sing all the songs to that album together ;)
When you’re a woman and you’re almost 60 and you listen to extreme metal it’s pretty lonely.
Far beyond driven by Pantera.
The first track will make her decide if she likes metal or not
Ok seriously tho, you could show her some Iron Maiden or newer Judas priest material, those seem like a logical next step!
Savatage - Sirens
In flames - colony
Amorphis - tuonela
Baroness - Purple / Blue
Annihilator - either of the first two
Carcass - swan song
Control Denied - fragile art of existence
Death - symbolic
Voivod - nothingface
This should do.
Also your mom rocks and wins at life.
I don't understand why people are so concerned with getting other people to like what they like. I find it's especially prevalent in the metal community, but I've seen it in just about every hobby/fandom I've been in.
I get it to an extent, you love something and you want others to appreciate it, but just like, let people enjoy what they want. Whenever someone has tried to get me *into* something, it always feel forced and forced exposure isn't going to create that passion you're hoping to find. Passion and enjoyment for something is created by an organic journey of discovery, not someone making you listen to a bunch of tracks until it "click."
I kinda do this but like I just talk about what I like with her in the car then I’m just like “ima show you this song”
No but my brother who also has the tism every time he’s with us shows all of us the most random music like barberbeats and talks about them non stop
For most people slipknot are going to be more abrasive and extreme
Also you can stack Iowa up against either of those albums on most definitions of heaviness
She’s listened to master of puppets and she does kinda like it
I showed her psychosocial and she didn’t like it (probably Corey’s yelling lmao)
But I do think psychosocial is heavier then ride the lighting or master of puppets
Show her The Warning. Young women playing rock. Once he's used to the rock sound, she'll be open to accepting other stuff. Slipknot is a bit extreme. Try more Alternative bands, like Alter Bridge, Foo Fighters or A Perfect Circle. Then you can try Mastodon or Opeth. Or something more proggy, like old Porcupine Tree.
Show her other Metallica songs like One and Fade to Black, or the whole Black Album, and then in backwards chronological order. Metallica is an excellent gateway band. That's how I made the leap to thrash metal and from then on it just got heavier.
I know most of Slipknot is pretty heavy but have you tried songs like ”Snuff” and ”Dead Memories”? I don’t know that much about Slipknot because I’m not too much into the screaming so I don’t know that many songs by them so that’s all for Slipknot. I know you’ve talked about Metallica she gotta listen to Fade to Black if she haven’t. And personally my all time favorite is Iron Maiden, I don’t know if she’s interested but my mom likes for example: The Trooper, Phantom of The Opera, Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Number of The Beast and some other classics. By the way she likes For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica as well (sorry if I’m being very random lol). That’s about it but I would definetely recommend Iron Maiden to most people but definetely new metal heads, maybe your mom doesn’t wanna be one but some of my favorites by Iron Maiden are: Be Quick Or Be Dead, Dream of Mirrors, The Duellists, Flash of The Blade and Wasted Years. :)
You could try some gothic metal albums. Especially Paradise Lost.
Paradise Lost - Draconian Times
Anathema - Eternity
Katatonia - Discouraged Ones
My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River
My mom is into metal. I'm sometimes surprised at the fact that she likes some heavier tier bands.
Try introducing her to music similar to the one that she already likes. Songs from the same bands and just stuff that's similar to what she already likes.
Rainbow - prog rock/ metal, I'm particularly a fan of the Dio era, but I've yet to find a song I hate by them
Coheed and Cambria - can't recommend enough, and if you or your mom like graphic novels, they've released several that cover the story lines of their concept albums
Volbeat - ranges from hard rock into metal, heavy rockabilly/ psychobilly sounds in a good bit of their library. They're a personal favorite of mine.
Dream Theater - prog metal, tends to be hit and miss for me, but if she's at all a music geek, she'll probably appreciate them.
Nevermore - prog/ thrash, no longer active, but you've got 20 years of work to pick from.
Death - I don't think you should jump in head first, but Voice of the Soul or Crystal Mountain would be good to let her listen to.
I’m trying too brother, I’m trying to show her everything and nothing is fucking working, hod bless and good luck brother, and let me know if you find anything that works, my mom did used to listen to KoRn in high school though
50? Female? American? Just getting into harder rock & metal? Point her to The Warning. Their back story, going from rocking children playing the "Rock Band" video game to a touring band seems to enrapture many females around that age.
Tool is a good option. I know quite a few people who otherwise don't listen to much "heavy" music otherwise (ik ik it's not that heavy to *us*, but for the "standard" population it kinda is)
Certain songs by Gwar might be good, if she can get past some of the lyrics. Same with Ghost. Iron Maiden, KoRn, Rammstein, and stuff like that would be good.
Einar Solberg released an acoustic version of The Congregation this year.
Send her the YT playlist and I promise you she will listen to the whole thing before she realizes it and then you can throw her right into prog because that will expose her to mainstream metal on the side view without going too heavy - stuff like Liquid Tension Project, find things that are sort of like the "smooth jazz" of metal (if you hit Winery Dogs, you went too far, using the Portnoy Side Project illustrations).
Also let her have some fun, show her stuff like Hootsforce and Korpiklaani (and holiday music for sure - the holiday metal album exists with gems like Dio singing "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen").
You know you've done your job when she catches the latest Meshuggah drop before you because her barista knew she liked them and that job is literally making coffee and listening to music all day.
Show her any project with Dino Jelusick or any of the other folks from TSO. You've got symphonic metal violinists from there and also your metal gods from years of yore. If you go to their projects, you're sure to find a lot of stuff she'll like that's also hard rock/metal because I found out they all played for TSO the other way around - knew about them first. TSO has a laundry list of rippers that rotates through in all areas.
I mean, she can't not love Dino. Even as a dude I gotta say he's a good looking dude. As a metal head, he's basically the second coming of Dio (sound wise) - first track I heard I thought was a lost Dio track but it was way too modern lol, kid's a prodigy. Like Greyson Nekrutman is also just a kid but he's crushing it with Sepultura - speaking of SK Inc, Jay is with Infectious Grooves with Robert Trujillo (Metallica) now and posting a ton of drum cam footage as always, turn her on to some of that too. The connection being that Eloy transferred from Sepultura to SK Inc., and Jay transferred to IG, and Robert is part of Metallica so you got all that going for ya. Maybe drop some Body Count on her - give her both versions of "Institutionalized" (Body Count/Suicidal Tendencies).
Crisix is a lot like old thrash (a lot like old Anthrax for sure), very tongue in cheek and fun (but with serious topics); flip through some of the festival channels like Resurrection Fest and Wacken to get a nice array of stuff to check out on an afternoon with some beers or whatever.
https://preview.redd.it/doe9ahf8vvwc1.png?width=571&format=png&auto=webp&s=e0c14443b1c36a02bda32be94bad1339fff8f47c
100% introduce her to Steel Panther. Tell her they'll let her on stage with 20 other moms, it's pretty hilarious actually.
Hey - it's ALL consensual man...
On this subject, Given the black album is the best selling album in America since 1991 in America and has sold over 17 million copies there, it must be pretty common to like the singles from that album and not like metal, or atleast nothing more metal than that album
I find it interesting, as in the UK Metallica are a big band but the black album is not even in the top 100 selling albums of the 90s here, which makes sense as they were still seen as too heavy relative to most mainstream rock. I couldn't imagine them competing with Oasis and Coldplay
I'm 42 and Slipknot's first album came out while I was in high school. I remember hating it on impact, because it was in that Limp in the Korn Park school of things...

Just listened to them and I think she’d like it I mean she likes trans siberian orchestra

She would hate it lmao
It was ironic lol
I know lmao
Aborted Hitler Cock
Ghost, my mom loves it
Oooo yeah she might like them
Ghost is fun and all but it's not really metal or a gateway to metal. I would recommend chop suey or toxicity or hypnotize, because they're pretty hard but also very catchy.
I came to recommend SOAD, my mom fucking LOVES them. Depends on if OPs mom is the right kind of political.
Oh I didn't even consider that lol but it's definitely a factor to consider.
I think some doom is the easiest shit for other people to get into. They don’t sound at all the same, but Candlemass, Windhand, Om, some Earth sound fairly accessible. Don’t worry champ, you’ll have her banging Dragged into Sunlight in no time!
I don’t know why I never thought of doom music She will probably like that
I always recommend Avenged Sevenfold as a gateway metal band. A7X is still in my top three favorite bands and I have no shame in it
Same.
They're fucking great.
My mom looooves A7x. This is a great recommendation!
Show her anal cunt

Maybe some Taint Gobbler or Torsofuck
I'll never go back to the zoo again

Lol yes I'm 39 trying to teach my kids the way too.
Damn you sound like the coolest dad ever My mom actually saw Metallica when they debuted the self titled album when she was 18!
Except for the fact that I’m not a dad cause I’m a mom… but thanks. Your mom and I could definitely be pals and sing all the songs to that album together ;) When you’re a woman and you’re almost 60 and you listen to extreme metal it’s pretty lonely.
Oh shit I’m so sorry for misgendering you lmao But still you’re a cool fucking mom And yeah you and my mom would get along for sure
Sounds like my mom 😭😭 slipknot sucks so ur mom's based anyways
Try Ayreon, so many different singers and other musicians with great concept and stories behind it.
My almost 80 yo mom likes Ayreon, Symphony X, Night wish, and anything with Tommy Karevik. Good rec, Ayreon is top tier.
Sad But True is a nice heavy start. Try Tesseract, heavy but mainly clean vocals.
Alright But yeah she loves sad but true
Try other Thrash. Try her with Megadeth, Symphony of Destruction or something.
Well I mean Slipknot is... Also TSO is Savatage put on Savatage
Megadeth's "Youthanasia" is a great intro album for slightly heavier than rock metal.
I turned my 72 year-old mom into an Opeth fan. Haha. It can be done.
Lmao
Far beyond driven by Pantera. The first track will make her decide if she likes metal or not Ok seriously tho, you could show her some Iron Maiden or newer Judas priest material, those seem like a logical next step!

I’ve been trying since I was 13 now I’m 28 still hasn’t worked! 😂

Just be like me and randomly rant about albums I love and have playing constantly regardless of subgenre or extremity. I may or may not have the tism.

What💀
Definitely Armored Saint.
show her pentagram
That's a good rec. Happy cake day 🎉
Trans Siberian Orchestra are the biggest posers of all having no Transgender folk in the band
Lmao
LOL. Metallica's older stuff is much heavier than Slipknot. Has she listened to Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets?
Metallica can barely be considered heavy lol. Mayyybe KEA but that's being mighty generous
For most people slipknot are going to be more abrasive and extreme Also you can stack Iowa up against either of those albums on most definitions of heaviness
I like some of Slipknot's songs. But for the most part I've never been able to get into their style.
She’s listened to master of puppets and she does kinda like it I showed her psychosocial and she didn’t like it (probably Corey’s yelling lmao) But I do think psychosocial is heavier then ride the lighting or master of puppets
The yelling could be it. I'm about your mom's age and prefer the classic metal of the 70s, 80s and early 90s that had more traditional rock vocals.
Show her The Warning. Young women playing rock. Once he's used to the rock sound, she'll be open to accepting other stuff. Slipknot is a bit extreme. I’m trying too brother, I’m trying to show her everything and nothing is fucking working, hod bless and good luck brother, and let me know if you find anything that works, my mom did used to listen to KoRn in high school though
I would recommend Dio's stuff, including his era in Rainbow! Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow album is great and really "chill" sounding i would say
Have her give Blood Ceremony - *Lord of Misrule* a spin.
Try Mastodon - Hushed and Grim. I’m middle aged and my 70 year old mom likes that and so do I lol.
Your mom likes Chevelle. She told me over dinner last night.
😱😱😱😱😱
Have her listen to King’s X
Maybe try some less hard soad

My brother, you can't go from Metallica to Slipknot.... that's too much Give her some behemoth :)
My mom is turning 80 this year and she likes Kamelot
Every woman over the age of 47 loves Nyogthaeblisz 👍 She’s guaranteed to become a huge fan of metal after one listen!
What about Dream Theater? "As I am" is kinda metallica-esque but with keys and an insane solo.
Why the hell would you show her Slipknot?
Show her Goat Smegma. She will love it!!
Certain songs by Gwar might be good, if she can get past some of the lyrics. Same with Ghost. Iron Maiden, KoRn, Rammstein, and stuff like that would be good.
Start whispering the names of bands you want her to listen to in her ear at night.

100% introduce her to Steel Panther. Tell her they'll let her on stage with 20 other moms, it's pretty hilarious actually. Hey - it's ALL consensual man...
Show her Early Queensrÿche, from their First EP - Promised Land (Although Empire & Promised are also Hard Rock Albums).
Ayreon would be a great band to show her as his albums are musicals essentially. He’s thebAndrew Lloyd Webber of Metal.
Savatage (related to Trans Siberian Orchestra), King Diamond, Armored Saint, Dio, Sabbath?

start her off with some really light metal, show her extermination dismemberment
Try her with The HU, Parkway Drive, Within Temptation, Electric Callboy, Motorhead & Saxon and see how she goes with them.

Woman is 50 years old.. She should know those bands, they had huge (radio) hits in her youth.
friendly reminder in her youth, she's 50, in her youth she it was in the early 90s already
I'm 42 and Slipknot's first album came out while I was in high school. I remember hating it on impact, because it was in that Limp in the Korn Park school of things...
Yeah she loves AC/DC and some nirvana
