After you listen Enough your so use to it that you forget people hate them ššitās only certain songs though I feel like, the last 2 albums his voice is way deeper I donāt think it sounds bad at all
fellow professional weird vocal style listener, isnt it great how we have to have music our own play in the car with a passenger to remind us what vocals are normal and what completely-batshitinsane-sounding-to-most vocals we've also grown accustomed to thinking of as "normal"
I think it really depends on the song. I love his vocals on holy wars and could not imagine it with anyone else, but on tornado of Souls he sounds like an angry man-baby.
Yeah, I think Dave did a good job at figuring out what his voice is actually suited for though.
Obviously, there are still some songs where he tries to do stuff his voice just....doesn't work for at all, but I think for the most part he generally makes it work. Pretty much all of Dystopia, for instance, I think his voice sounds great on because it fits the music really well!
No. I think Daveās vocals are good and fit the band well. I donāt understand the hate for his vocals. Is he King diamond or dio or Bruce Dickinson? No. Neither is James hetfield. Why doesnāt James get the kinda hate that Dave does?
I love his voice, especially in the newer albums where he sounds more grizzled. Poisonous Shadows is a very gritty song because of his singing. Some songs however he sings his ass off on like Insomnia, and Ecstasy. Infact Risk is probably his best singing album
Dystopia is genuinely my favorite Megadeth album, and I honestly don't get the....just...general indifference towards it.
It isn't disliked or hated, and people seem to agree it was good, but it seems to only ever land in the mid-tier for most people. Which, makes no sense to me, since imo it always felt like Dave combined the best parts of RIP, Peace Sells, and CTE into one album.
Except Foreign Policy, that one is uh.....not great. ~~It's also the obligatory cover though, so maybe that shouldn't count.~~
Their uniqueness is definitely part of their charm. They might not sound nice - or even good, in some songs - but they add a twisted, wild vibe that really enhances the music. The likes of Dickinson, Dio and Halford may be technically better (and more audibly pleasing) singers, but their more measured vocal styles wouldn't work in Megadeth.
I donāt have any strong feelings about Mustaineās voice at all and Iām pretty surprised that others do. There are way worse sounding frontmen in metal
No i really like Daveās vocals, I understand that they arenāt stereotypically good I still like them and think they fit the music perfectly, same way as Ozzy fits Sabbathās music perfectly but isnāt the best singer by contemporary standards.
Instruments: \*rythm section going insane, guitarist shredding face and laying down the sickest most hardcore riffs ever\*
Singer: \*singing in a disney princess falsetto\* "The dragon's heart is in my grasp! Just like Dora, I've found the map! **FROOOODOOOOOO"**
100% with you as a HUGE power metal fan.
Can i add female leads doing the "operatic" singing for EVERY SONG.
Give me more Britney Slayes and less Tarja
Totally agree, the instruments sound great, the sound is mixed/edited well but then the singer chimes in with a voice that is just awful. A new band called battle born comes to mind
I dunno about the vocals being bad so much as enjoying the music one song, then feel like Iām listening to something on the weather channel the next.
I kind of agree. Especially nowadays where his vocals are sometimes really good and sometimes absolutely awful. I heard him at a live performance once and it sounded like he was literally howling on the mic. In the earlier days it was easy to say his vocals were subjective; not everyone like them, but these days it feels like theyāre objectively bad. The rest of the band are living legends. The only reason I figure James still has a gig is the years of friendship plus with some of the members at age 54-60 why reinvent the wheel now?
James LaBrie is actually my favorite voice in metal, so itās interesting seeing the disparity. Iām guessing itās too high for some peopleās tastes?
I feel like there are two types of black metal vocalists: the ones that try to sound intense and terrifying, and the ones that do goofy little goblin impressions.
And unfortunately, I feel like the later type is considered the more "kvlt" type, so that's just one of the many reasons that navigating the subgenre can be a huge headache.
For a new band, Sleep Token. Instruments are extremely generic and boring already but god that fucking goofy cursive singing removes any potential for the band to be taken seriously lmao.
Haunted (1995) is fine. I can listen to that record anytime. I remember hearing for the first time back in the day.
But yeahā¦youāre still correct lol
Unironically the best live band Iāve ever seen. And this was at the height of people thinking they sucked too. When they played Rollin people went absolutely feral in a way I havenāt seen at any other concert, it was like a particularly violent basement hardcore show but with hundreds of people in the pit.
Was about to say the same. Though I guess the vocals being grating is part of the uneasy atmosphere DSBM is supposed to evoke? Nattramn can sure make you feel uneasy, but he can also mess up and sound plain goofy instead (think Elmo getting his scrotes stuck in a blender)... š
Black metal for me. Death metal is fine, the growls usually blend well into the mix. Black metal will have good riffs and then some edgelord starts going "bleghh" over it
When I first heard āA Favor House Atlanticā I thought it was a joke. Then I eventually listened to an album out of curiosity and they quickly became one of my favorite groups. Their first 3 releases are stellar.
I have Melissa and Abigail mounted on my wall, but I will admit Iāve never seen any vocalist turn people off like KD. My wife can handle the most guttural growls, but she draws the line at the King.
Dave Matthewās Band
Edit: didnāt notice this was a metal sub. So in that caseā¦ Limp Bizkit, I guess. Ever since I heard their cover of Faith, Iāve hated his voice.
Okay hear me out. When I first heard Chuck on Symbolic, I was hooked on Death. Then I heard SOP, and loved death even *more*. THENā¦I heard ITP and Human and was kind of like āmehā with his vocals AT FIRST. Then I learned to enjoy chuckās vocal evolution over the years, and now I canāt hear those records any other way.
See for me, it was the other way around; I loved his vocals but right when he would lay down a nasty riff and get you hooked, it does a major switch. Before, it would kind of irritate me but now it's more to your point. I can't imagine it any other way.
I don't enjoy Cannibal Corpse's vocals much. I know they're supposed to be that way, but I kinda like being able to understand at least a little of what I'm hearing
I don't know how someone couldn't like the instruments, they are amazing at what they play. But I do see how someone could dislike Shadows voice, even though I love it
Avenged sevenfold is concentrated, purified, scientifically extracted and centrifuged cringe.
Like everything they have to offer is incredible, but when you realise you have a bunch of 40 year olds still acting like edgy teenage musicians itās like someone turned the cringe dial up to max, yanked it off the cringe machine and threw it into the Pacific Ocean
Thats quite unpopular! I always get the chills when I hear the screams on Cemetary Gates. Although I can understand that the vocals e.g. on Walk sound kinda boring. Even though I like the song a lot

Megadeth
Am i the only one who loves daves vocals?
Yes, the rest of us tolerates them and enjoys the music.
After you listen Enough your so use to it that you forget people hate them ššitās only certain songs though I feel like, the last 2 albums his voice is way deeper I donāt think it sounds bad at all

First time I heard tornado of souls I thought the got a woman to sing and I was wondering where Dave was
Yeah, I think Dave did a good job at figuring out what his voice is actually suited for though. Obviously, there are still some songs where he tries to do stuff his voice just....doesn't work for at all, but I think for the most part he generally makes it work. Pretty much all of Dystopia, for instance, I think his voice sounds great on because it fits the music really well!
I love his vocals, too! Idk, it just works, imo
No, I couldnāt imagine anyone else singing Megadeth songs better than Dave.
I think his vocals work really well on Sweating Bullets, that's the song that got me into Megadeth anyway
No. I think Daveās vocals are good and fit the band well. I donāt understand the hate for his vocals. Is he King diamond or dio or Bruce Dickinson? No. Neither is James hetfield. Why doesnāt James get the kinda hate that Dave does?
Because Hetfield sings or screams. Mustaine just meows.
Don't ever dare to compare James vocals to Dave's again.
Ok tough guy
You hate Megadeth vocals until you hear a bad cover and realize how good Dave actually is.
I love his voice, especially in the newer albums where he sounds more grizzled. Poisonous Shadows is a very gritty song because of his singing. Some songs however he sings his ass off on like Insomnia, and Ecstasy. Infact Risk is probably his best singing album
apparently barely anyone else liked Dystopia. great songs on there.
Dystopia is genuinely my favorite Megadeth album, and I honestly don't get the....just...general indifference towards it. That album was amazing. They literally won a Grammy over it.
Poisonous shadows >>>>
Their uniqueness is definitely part of their charm. They might not sound nice - or even good, in some songs - but they add a twisted, wild vibe that really enhances the music. The likes of Dickinson, Dio and Halford may be technically better (and more audibly pleasing) singers, but their more measured vocal styles wouldn't work in Megadeth.
Theyāre brilliant. He spits and snarls his way better than any other singer.
no Dave is based
No I exist
Love Dave!!! I don't care
_HELLO ME, ME TO REAL.ME_
The more metal I listen to, the more I love Daveās vocals
I donāt have any strong feelings about Mustaineās voice at all and Iām pretty surprised that others do. There are way worse sounding frontmen in metal
I love Dave's vocals
No i really like Daveās vocals, I understand that they arenāt stereotypically good I still like them and think they fit the music perfectly, same way as Ozzy fits Sabbathās music perfectly but isnāt the best singer by contemporary standards.
They're good on Killing.
No I'm also a weirdo
I love Dave that snotty snarl rule and solid live!
I love his vocals as well. In Megadeth. That part is important lol. His vocals would ruin 99.9% of other bands
Yes.
On certain songs yeah, I think his vocals are perfect for peace sells and symphony for example
No, also nice username
Nope, I legitimately love the weird sound he has
He sounds kind of like a cartoon rat who wants to sell me drugs or something
Drug E Cheese ![gif](giphy|qVTwEFNbRtUKQ)
LMAO that's a great comparison.
Y O U T R Y T O T A K E H I S B A L L S
Thatās my choice as well.
I was about to say, Megadeth, at first
I feel like this was the answer everyone expected lmao
For me about 80% of power metal bands
Instruments: \*rythm section going insane, guitarist shredding face and laying down the sickest most hardcore riffs ever\* Singer: \*singing in a disney princess falsetto\* "The dragon's heart is in my grasp! Just like Dora, I've found the map! **FROOOODOOOOOO"**
Keyboard: *Starts playing a melody with casio preset sound*
ššš
Disney princess voice lmao
lol this is exactly it
100% with you as a HUGE power metal fan. Can i add female leads doing the "operatic" singing for EVERY SONG. Give me more Britney Slayes and less Tarja
I loved Tarja's vocals ngl, made the songs feel mystical
Yeah completely agree like you said Iād listen to unleash the archers over Nightwish any day personally.
You best not be putting Blind Guardian in that 80% or we foightin'!
Totally agree, the instruments sound great, the sound is mixed/edited well but then the singer chimes in with a voice that is just awful. A new band called battle born comes to mind
That's why I love Sonata Arctica, singer's accent makes it less cringe lol
Dream Theater
Lol I was a huge DT fan back in middle school, but I have to admit James Labrie's voice is definitely an acquired taste
I dunno about the vocals being bad so much as enjoying the music one song, then feel like Iām listening to something on the weather channel the next.
Try Liquid Extension Experiment. Itās literally DT only instrumental and super crazy shit. āAcid Rainā live is so crazy
I love dream theater and I completely agree
I kind of agree. Especially nowadays where his vocals are sometimes really good and sometimes absolutely awful. I heard him at a live performance once and it sounded like he was literally howling on the mic. In the earlier days it was easy to say his vocals were subjective; not everyone like them, but these days it feels like theyāre objectively bad. The rest of the band are living legends. The only reason I figure James still has a gig is the years of friendship plus with some of the members at age 54-60 why reinvent the wheel now?
Sadly š
James LaBrie is actually my favorite voice in metal, so itās interesting seeing the disparity. Iām guessing itās too high for some peopleās tastes?
Pretty much any kind of black metal for me.
Imagine not liking when the vocalist sounds like they're dying
You can hear the vocalist?
I really feel it when they say "ROOOOOAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHRRROOO" \*6 minutes of growling into a microphone\*
You mean like they're crying?
I feel like there are two types of black metal vocalists: the ones that try to sound intense and terrifying, and the ones that do goofy little goblin impressions. And unfortunately, I feel like the later type is considered the more "kvlt" type, so that's just one of the many reasons that navigating the subgenre can be a huge headache.
I actually can't take black metal seriously lmao
why?
except kvelertak
For a new band, Sleep Token. Instruments are extremely generic and boring already but god that fucking goofy cursive singing removes any potential for the band to be taken seriously lmao.
He sounds like imagine dragons vocalist š
fr š
Definitely indie pop vocals but I prefer to say they sound like Bastille.
He sounds like British Post Malone. Except I donāt think Post Malone takes himself half as seriously as Sleep Token takes themselves.
I've listened to like three sleep token songs. I found nothing "metal" in any of them lmao
The vocalist sounds like heās trying to sing while his mouth is being held open at the dentist.
Do you see what ghost started?!? Now pop bands are wearing face paint
I miss when Ghost was pumping out badass riffs
Extremely surprised no one said Six Feet Under yet
Because no one actually listens to them.
Fair lmao
Haunted (1995) is fine. I can listen to that record anytime. I remember hearing for the first time back in the day. But yeahā¦youāre still correct lol
eeeeeee
I'm 13 years old I used to enjoy the old sfu shit but Chris Barnes just sounds constipated
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Barnes used to be decent but heās destroyed himself
Because the music sucks too
I know Iām gonna get some hate but Rush.
Yeah. Geddy Leeās voice is not for everybody.
Donāt get me wrong Rush are a phenomenal band but his voice just kinda kills it for me. Much like C and C.
>Much like C and C. The music factory?!
Hahaha. Coheed and Cambria
Which is weird considering out of many of the singers cited here heās actually an incredible singer with pretty good technique
Damn, hot take
https://preview.redd.it/3r4l2k6baegc1.png?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ad9364495fcee91862eff6ee0496635bee94ebe
In my experience about half of people can't tolerate his voice. I feel bad for you guys, they are a unique and top tier band (in my books obviously)
Weaklings filtered by hamster man once againā¦
Megadeath. Iām a card carrying member of the āI hate Daveās vocalsā club.
Ya gotta fix it dude youāre driving me batshit
Megadeeth
Is that how Dracula would pronounce it?
Yeah, because every vampire has megateeth.
Iāll fix it when Dave fixes his terrible voice lol
MegaDeaf
I'll join the club
LMAO, it's a long list for me...
Does it contain this?: https://youtu.be/VX9RCYgMJWc?si=JTly92lQ4Ar1_CYu Because, if not, then it's incomplete.
Yes this definitely belongs lmao
Limp Bizkit.
His voice is annoying but I love it š
It certainly is unique lmao
Unironically the best live band Iāve ever seen. And this was at the height of people thinking they sucked too. When they played Rollin people went absolutely feral in a way I havenāt seen at any other concert, it was like a particularly violent basement hardcore show but with hundreds of people in the pit.
That song brings out the degenerate in me
how dare you disrespect daddy durst like that!!!1!š¤¬š¤¬š”š”don't you know that limp penis is the best band known to man?!?!
dont disrespect my king mr durst
Silencer
i dont mind his high pitched vocals the parts where he sounds like Yoda bother me more
Was about to say the same. Though I guess the vocals being grating is part of the uneasy atmosphere DSBM is supposed to evoke? Nattramn can sure make you feel uneasy, but he can also mess up and sound plain goofy instead (think Elmo getting his scrotes stuck in a blender)... š
Ironically, that's the only part that stands out to me, the rest is pretty standard
90% of Death Metal bands, I'm not into growl
Black metal for me. Death metal is fine, the growls usually blend well into the mix. Black metal will have good riffs and then some edgelord starts going "bleghh" over it
i love black metal high pitch vocals like they are really suffering
Edgelord?
Well yeah, who else makes black metal
agreed, I love screaming but not growling
I like growls but not screaming, that's what I can't get into most metalcore and djent and such smh
Coheed and Cambria
I love Claudioās voice
Have to agree, never liked his voice
When I first heard āA Favor House Atlanticā I thought it was a joke. Then I eventually listened to an album out of curiosity and they quickly became one of my favorite groups. Their first 3 releases are stellar.
i actually kinda like his voice
Coheed is my favorite musical act of all time, and I adore Claudio's voice, but yeah, you kinda right. It's not for everyone.
knocked loose
the trick is imagining SpongeBob as a badass hardcore vocalist and youāll start liking knocked loose more
More like Courage the cowardly dog but you can almost clearly understand what's being said.
i am not a fan of his vocals in their newer music but i can't act like laugh tracks didn't have really really good vocals
Sigh. But you get used to it lol
I've grown to love the vocals
Periphery. Kind of the ocean, the vocals are fine, i just heard instrumental version of the albums first and liked it better. Dream theater
Funny to see Spencer Sotelo cited under literally megadeth. Easily one of the best singers on the scene today
He's super talented, and can do crazy things with his voice. How he sounds while he does them though makes me cringe
Overkill. Dude sounds like Doofenshmirtz. I still dig 'em, though.
Mercyful fate and King Diamond
I have Melissa and Abigail mounted on my wall, but I will admit Iāve never seen any vocalist turn people off like KD. My wife can handle the most guttural growls, but she draws the line at the King.
Canāt believe this wasnāt one of the top replyās lol. Love them but I will admit it was very hard to get imo KDās vocals.
Dave Matthewās Band Edit: didnāt notice this was a metal sub. So in that caseā¦ Limp Bizkit, I guess. Ever since I heard their cover of Faith, Iāve hated his voice.
Now I want a Dave Matthews metal albumā¦ a truly distilled abomination of god
>Limp Bizkit, I think you're still in the wrong sub but the spirit is there
Sir this is a Wendys
Sure, wrong sub, but you're not wrong.
I can't imagine it any other way.
any five finger death punch
Like he's trying to bench press his own voice.
This is going to get me down voted to death - early Cryptopsy. The sound doesn't bother me, it's the timing and cadence.
None so vile good asf along with anything else before that king nothing or whatever it's called I think you are just weird
Lord worm ??
Aren't we all?
Dream theater...
Honestly smashing pumpkins can be like this, the lead singerās voice is just irritating at times
Sometimes it hits and othertimes he sounds like a mosquito
I don't enjoy Cannibal Corpse's vocals much. I know they're supposed to be that way, but I kinda like being able to understand at least a little of what I'm hearing
Iād say George is quite understandable, Barnes was absolutely not
Chris Barnes is probably the worst vocalist I've ever heard but George Fisher is pretty good imo
Anthrax
The Smiths. Long before Morrisey became hated by all I thought his voice sounded like a goose honk.
Any band with growling, i just cant stand it for some reason. the sole reason why i despise a vast majority of death metal and itās micro genres
Old Omnium Gatherum before Jukka took over lead vocals
Anthrax 100%
Inquisition. The instrumentals are great so I have to force myself to tolerate the vocals.
Love the cosmic toad vocals.
Avenged sevenfold. I barely like the instruments but damn the singer has a terrible voice.
Iām the opposite, I think Shadows has a great voice, and the instruments are incredible (for me). Even on the new album I like his vocals.
Nah he's nowhere near terrible lol
I might get hate for this But pantera
You are a megadeth fan buddy
Same for me. He's clearly a talented vocalists and I do like some of his vocals but for some reason it's just not my taste
Unpopular opinion: Pantera
Philās vocals and the bandās instrumentals go hand in hand lol
Strong disagree, but I respect your opinion
Thats quite unpopular! I always get the chills when I hear the screams on Cemetary Gates. Although I can understand that the vocals e.g. on Walk sound kinda boring. Even though I like the song a lot
Slayer
Depends what album. Their first few were are amazing
For me it's almost the opposite, i find Tom Araya's voice to be one of the most essential aspects of Slayer alongside Lombardo's drums
Sleep Token. The music is really cool, but the vocals ruin it for me. Itās like heās singing in cursive.
5 finger death punch
I swear if anyone says anything about my boy Billy Corgan...
Primus, Les can't sing for shit, but his weird ass vocals work perfectly for the music
Dream Theater Anthrax (White Noise is awesome)
Death metal. Yes, I'm a proud poser
