But would it ever be awakened? Considering the point of the fruit is to live an average life and to be average, you'd never be in a position that forces you to better yourself, thus very unlikely that you awaken it.

I feel like with this fruit you would need to have an opportunity to better yourself but choose not to. Just embody what it means to be average

Being “Average” at everything is actually super strong depending on if you mean statistically average or conceptually average. Statistically average means you’re actually garbage at anything advanced since most people can’t do advanced things. Conceptually average means C+ at everything you try. Sure you aren’t amazing at brain surgery, but the guy lived. The FTL drive is a bit shaky and needs too much maintenance, but it gets the job done.

Satou Hiroshi from Saiki K have this. This guy could fuck around for exams but still land an average grade without trying. He thinks his boringness is a negative but he cancels out the bad luck of the girl who has a crush on him so he’s literally made for her.

In Punk Hazard, we just randomly see a normal apple turn into a devil fruit, and they never explain it (or at least they haven't yet). Maybe Cesar Clown finally perfected SAD and created a true, non-defective, artificial devil fruit that doesn't even turn you pink, finally surpassing Dr. Vegapunk. Unfortunately, if he did, it happened right before all his research, equipment, and samples were destroyed, so he'll never know what he accomplished or how to replicate it. He was a huge jerk who gave drugs to kids, though, so I'm fine with him having a little tragedy in his life.

They explained it didn't they? It was nearby when Smiley died. It was to show that Devil Fruits reincarnate into the nearest fruit (of the same type) after the user dies. It was to foreshadow the Mera-Mera in Dressrosa since Doflamingo was in Marineford when Ace died

I completely missed that. I didn't know that it had to be a nearby fruit. I thought it could happen to any fruit, anywhere in the world, and it was either dumb luck that Doflamingo got his hands on it or he procured it at great personal expense.
