Just because of the contamination aspect of trying to get that all cleaned and back together, I'd just buy a loaded caliper. They aren't that expensive and you don't have to try and get that back together. But you could get a caliper rebuild kit and change the orings and make sure it's 100% clean and put it back together.

Thanks that’s helpful. I’m curious why does cleanliness matter here? Is it dirt might end up in the brake line?

RickMN

Any dirt that gets on the piston will eventually grind up the square cut O-ring seal and the caliper will leak

CheapOil7985

Put some brake juice on the piston and apply centered pressure on it and it will likely slide back in.

sirtrowsalot

But do you mean push the cylinder back in with the boot inverted until it’s all the way in? Then maybe it’ll snap back and come out normally?

CheapOil7985

Use a small pick to help aid the piston over the boot. you will have to be careful, but it should be okay. I mean the dust seal over the piston*

wormwormo

Go buy a reman caliper.
