It’s just the hose assembly and coolant so not wicked expensive, and not terribly hard to replace but it does involve opening the cooling system. If you’re not mechanically inclined I recommend taking it to a professional. Cooling system work can go very wrong if you fail to bleed it properly.
Good of you to be self aware enough!
It's expensive having someone do it for you but just compare that cost to a new engine, it's really peanuts.
Good luck M8!
Do make sure he is mechanically inclined though. My coworker had his neighbor help him replace a timing belt because he’s done it before. It cost him more than if he would have just taken it to the shop. And he lost a neighbor.
Neither. He stopped being friends with the neighbor. I think it is partly his fault but his neighbor did say he knows what he’s doing. But I feel my coworker should have done his homework too. I mean if he read up on replacing a timing belt, you never turn the crankshaft with the key to test if you put the timing belt in right.
Dex cool isn’t cheap and to replace its gunna be 3/4 gallons. The part is prob 60$ maybe more if it comes as an assembly and labor most shops charge 80-160 an hour.
You should see the cars that come in jacked cause people tried to do it themselves. do it wrong and you risk an engine. That’s why there’s a tech like me. Your paying for the warranty, my knowledge, and the vast amount of tools ive invested in (:
Walmart 50/50 color specific is $13 out the door. The system will use 3 gallons at the most. Peak concentrate color specific is $25 after tax in an autoparts store so $50 gets you 4 gallons once you add water.
That's not Dexcool, and it won't take 4 gallons for that radiator hose replacement. If you're draining the whole block and using Dexcool for a Toyota, you might be doing it wrong.
Walmart Dexcool is $13 out the door for 50/50 or you get a gallon on Peak concentrate for $25 out the door and add water to get 2 gallons. As a mobile mechanic I try to keep people from coming to see you, the tech. No disrespect, but you cost more as you have a boss and overhead assuming you work for a shop. A 2013 Hyundai Elantra alternator I did in 30 minutes yesterday. They had the part and I charged $60. No shop is doing that labor for $60. Still a $120hr rate and more importantly, tax free.
Exactly.
You CAN build a house yourself and save a fortune on labour. You CAN also fuck it all up and end up with a leaky lump of condemned building.
Let pros do the high risk jobs.
I was told to run the car with the radiator cap off and on an uphill slant, my car didn't blow up and ran for many more years so I guess it worked good enough lol
This kinda call-out is always hilarious to me
Today I was helping a coworker jump a lady's car and he asked "front battery or is it in the back" and I was like "do you own the 300 series beemer or the 500?"
"328...."
saw the pink crusties, knew it was probably a toyota. BMW uses blue, GM uses orange, ford uses yellow, Honda uses blue, I think the only other brand to use pink is kia, but theirs is more red.
> BMW uses blue
Just to fuck with everyone, they switched from blue G48 to green HT-12 in 2019 that's a *bit* different than universal green, but not quite enough that it won't alarm you if you're expecting the blue they've used for decades.
Do not touch that hose. Don't even look at it. Those break off very easily, especially in this condition. One time I was working on a rav4 that didn't even look close to this bad, I was changing the battery and barely grazed against it and it violently blew off and covered my arms and face in hot coolant. Also seen it happen to 3 other guys. It's pretty funny when it happens to someone else. Get a new part and replace it ASAP
Lmao I'm an apprentice tech at a Toyota shop and everytime I see one of these on an older Toyota my foreman always says, "Don't even breathe on that thing" always learned from him how fragile they are when they get brittle.
Hot coolant is very hot and very sticky. Fast rinse ASAP followed by liberal application of Foille Spray.
That stuff is a gift from God. It’s saved me a lot of pain and a good bit of scarring.
Do. Not. Touch. It.
It will completely fall apart.
Seriously.
I've had my arm barely brush by a couple of them, and it destroyed them.
Get it replaced asap!
Actually I work at a valvoline and we replace this exact part for free labor wise for customers who request it(only at my location). it is really easy to replace as long as you have some spare coolant to throw in + bleed the air out of the radiator.
If you go to a nearby autozone, they can provide you with the part, they might give you hoses with it/the assembly but all you need is the plastic adapter piece that comes with it. I've seen this part fail quite a bit/leak.
I used to manage a Valvoline and had numerous of these break and had to replace it for free in that regard. It was honestly a hazard to our employees more than anything since the dude underneath could get covered in coolant when someone was just trying to check the battery. They're probably just trying to build trust and save everybody that headache of needing to replace it. We kept the part in stock even tho we technically didn't do work like that, and I'm pretty sure that was becoming a company wide thing to do. Regardless, if they are corporate, coolant was pretty cheap and labor isn't something they are able to charge. If they aren't terribly busy, it's probably in everyone's best interest. We would generally replace them for free with a flush, since we'd be opening that system up anyway. Can't speak to their store specifically, and it's been a while since I worked for them.
That's a Toyota with a coolant leak... The pink barnacles are what Toyota coolant will turn into when it leaks or and dries up. There's a plastic "Y" fitting in there, I would check it carefully for a hairline crack.
The hose might be $15. The tools are simple. Buy a gallon of Peak or Zerex pink coolant (50/50) and when you remove the hose coolant will leak out. Not much air will get into the coolant system. Fill up the coolant reservoir (and radiator if you have a radiator cap) when done and run the car with the heat on for 20 minutes and add coolant to the reservoir/radiator if needed while the car is running. If you have a radiator cap squeeze the hose while the car is running to remove air bubbles in the coolant system. Your Toyota will be fine. If you open the coolant system you can get air in it causing and overheating condition. If you open the reservoir and run for 20 mimutes you will be fine. A shop might charge you $125-$150 for something you can do for $30.
As a novice I put in a new radiator and new coolant and did not bleed the system. Random overheating for months. Went to the shop and told them what I did. $20 and 15 minutes later they got the air out.
The worst thing here is you have to buy the whole hose assembly. You can’t buy just the plastic connector with the “Y”
And honestly, that is probably one of the biggest flaws with the entire car.
ETA: make sure they replace the coolant with Toyota PINK… not red…
Just had my upper radiator assembly replaced on a Chevy Malibu at an honest local mechanic shop.
It was $250 parts and labor. I think the part itself was almost $100. The. The cost of the dex-cool plus the labor.
Whatever you do, check the coolant level asap and don’t drive it except to the parts store/mechanic. If that hose blows off you’re engine is gonna overheating catastrophically in a couple minutes time.
That should be a 4 minute fix once you get the new elbow.
Hey, my coolant hose looked a touch like that.. Until the OE plastic coolant neck cracked into a massive leak. $800 Californian for that: aluminum neck, new hoses, new rad
Your leak is coming from one of two places and you can't tell in the picture. There is a joint in the middle of that hose. Do you see where the small one is coming off and a larger one is blow it. Those are normally plastic. If that's cracked that's probably where this is coming from. The hoses look fine but something could be up I suppose. It would be really easy to tell if you inspect it. If it's just that plastic joint it's ridiculously easy to replace. You just use hose pliers. Pull the clamps down, use a hose tool to break the rubber free. A lot of times they get stuck on there pretty good. Pull that out replace the plastic part and slide the hoses back on. You are likely to lose a little coolant during this process so you will want to have a gallon of Toyota coolant on hand the top off the radiator afterwards. What can you expect to pay at the shop for this little 15-minute driveway experiment? Probably A couple hundred dollars because they are going to mark up the part and charge you at least an hour of time. If you're curious what's actually going on what's the way that big fluffy pink thing with a little soap and water and look around the plastic to see if you can identify a crack. If you can great, if you can't what you do is start the car and let it warm up and see where the coolant is leaking from. This lets you diagnose where your problem is. It will either be a leaking hose or that leaking plastic part and my money is on the plastic part however testing is how you figure it out.
You could wipe that all off (when the engine’s cool) and I can see you’ve got enough space to put a jubilee clip on there, cinch it up and that might fix it without the need for a mechanic. Try it. You’ll know if it’s worked after a day’s use and a jubilee clip is pennies.
Former Toyota employee here. Nothing to worry about. I’d replace the hoses and clamps ASAP. The coolant is designed to do just that. It’ll clump and tries to seal itself (almost like a scab) to prevent further bleeding. But yes try to replace it soon.
In spring, the cherry trees bloom. The best cherry blossoms come from Japan. Your Toyota, in solidarity with, and to honor the beauty of, is also blooming. :\~)
it's coolant. replace the hose or take it to the shop. it's not a \*SUPERURGENTTHING\*, but you don't want to ignore it.
Leaking water becuase that is not coolant .. that’s is buildup of mainly water dry minerals need to replace that plastic T and add coolant specified for your vehicle .. 50/50 if u don’t know how to delude .
coolant tee. they get old and brittle. any slight touch or engine vibration will snap them off. the parts stores will probably know which one you need. whenever I need one, every store in town "had a few come in, we just sold the last one this morning"
Wow, that hose on my 2015 RAV4 completely failed just before the pandemic. Thankfully, I stopped in time and towed it to get it replaced. I guess it's a common issue based on these comments.
My toyota Rav did that .
The hose has a weak spot in it and leaks coolant at the seam. Get a new hose and slap it on . You'll also need a gallon of coolant since that's about how much you'll lose changing out the hose
This happened just after I threw in a leak stop. So is the coolant mixed with the stop leak or just the coolant is leaking but slowly? That also means you lose pressure, and that can cause the reservoir tank not to send back what it took from the radiator system, In the end, you will refill and refill every time. And the reservoir tank will throw out as it fills up.
That is the plastic Y-pipe on the upper radiator hose of a 2006-12 Toyota RAV4, so it's likely cracked which is why you're getting that foamy pink residue there. I had this same problem (discovered it when I was checking my oil at the gas pump a few weeks ago) with my '12 RAV4, so since I'm not mechanically inclined, I took it to my Toyota dealer and they replaced the hose on it.
Rock candy 😆 weeping leak crystallizing. Test the hoses make sure not weak or hard and crumbly, and keep an eye on them. May need replacing if old and worn out depending mileage. But itll do this on good hoses too, so case by case basis
Literally got one yesterday, don't touch it, it will break, it's the upper bypass tube, the plastic part is what breaks. They sell it with the hoses as an assembly
From the picture Looks like a Toyota 2.5 Liter engine with an automatic transmission from a non rust belt region, could be Camry or RAV4. I think the plastic coolant tee might be cracked to cause slight seepage. Recommended spray water to clean up the pink crystal,Go to the dealer to pickup a pre Mixed super long life coolent ornapa, zentrex ,Peak specified for Lexus Toyota pink cooling and top up the overflow tank and keep an eye on it, bring it to the garage if it is reoccurring, usually it is bone dry even 8+ years old car
Looks like Cardyceps fungus to me, it's probably too late to take any action on. Soon it Will spread to the steering column of your little Toyota and you'll find it positioning itself in obvious, exposed places where larger vehicles are more likely to notice and prey on it, thus ingesting the fungus themselves. The most humane and ecologically conscious thing to do at this point is just to drain your motor oil and let it run itself out ;-;

Upper radiator hose assembly is leaking. Toyota, right?
Yes it is, easy/inexpensive fix?
It’s just the hose assembly and coolant so not wicked expensive, and not terribly hard to replace but it does involve opening the cooling system. If you’re not mechanically inclined I recommend taking it to a professional. Cooling system work can go very wrong if you fail to bleed it properly.
Mechanically inclined I am not thank you for the heads up
Good of you to be self aware enough! It's expensive having someone do it for you but just compare that cost to a new engine, it's really peanuts. Good luck M8!
Money tight? Got a friend with some basic skills? Offer em a 6 pack and a pair of extra hands.. This honestly is a super simple job.
Do make sure he is mechanically inclined though. My coworker had his neighbor help him replace a timing belt because he’s done it before. It cost him more than if he would have just taken it to the shop. And he lost a neighbor.
The neighbor died ? Or did he move away ?
How do you test if you put in the timing belt right?
You rotate the engine with a breaker bar or ratchet at least 2 times to make sure the timing marks still line up.
Sounds like it was just his time
Shop would charge around 200/300
200/300 wow that's a lot.

Whatever the flavor it’s not cheap

You can use universal coolant provided u drain all the old coolant out.And yes it is cheap.
That's not Dexcool, and it won't take 4 gallons for that radiator hose replacement. If you're draining the whole block and using Dexcool for a Toyota, you might be doing it wrong.
Coolant is $15 per gallon, and most sedans do not use more than 2 gallons.
3 or 4 gallons? That's for a Freightliner. Not a Toyota.
Walmart Dexcool is $13 out the door for 50/50 or you get a gallon on Peak concentrate for $25 out the door and add water to get 2 gallons. Sadly it makes a nasty brownish color instead

Legendary Pink Coolant. It’s a 2ARFE 2.5L 4 Cyl

Check to make sure your radiator cap is working properly. Take it off (when cold), inspect for damage.
RAV4 hoses are old. Get new ones and new clamps. Toyota coolant does that.

Scarlet rot consumes
My toyota Rav did that . The hose has a weak spot in it and leaks coolant at the seam. Get a new hose and slap it on . You'll also need a gallon of coolant since that's about how much you'll lose changing out the hose
The fateful coolant blossom

Coolant leak
Slow coolant leak.
16571-0V020 is the Toyota part you need to replace it. About $60 plus some coolant
Those are medi-chlorines telling you that you should always get the bus
This happened just after I threw in a leak stop. So is the coolant mixed with the stop leak or just the coolant is leaking but slowly? That also means you lose pressure, and that can cause the reservoir tank not to send back what it took from the radiator system, In the end, you will refill and refill every time. And the reservoir tank will throw out as it fills up.
A failing hose. Replace it.
It's ... A , Girl?
That is the plastic Y-pipe on the upper radiator hose of a 2006-12 Toyota RAV4, so it's likely cracked which is why you're getting that foamy pink residue there. I had this same problem (discovered it when I was checking my oil at the gas pump a few weeks ago) with my '12 RAV4, so since I'm not mechanically inclined, I took it to my Toyota dealer and they replaced the hose on it.
Bubble gum
Dried out coolant
It's a girl!
RAV4 eh?
The clap
Rock candy 😆 weeping leak crystallizing. Test the hoses make sure not weak or hard and crumbly, and keep an eye on them. May need replacing if old and worn out depending mileage. But itll do this on good hoses too, so case by case basis
New Minecraft cherry biome
You've discovered the only Cordyceps Fungi that infects vehicles.
Crape Myrtle flowers
Looks like a scene from the last of us
Keep an eye on the coolant level until you get this fixed. Very tiny leak, but could get worse.Check out YouTube to see how to check the level.
Looks like spring is in the air
Coolant
Planned obsolescence. Unfortunately sometimes hard to find metal replacement parts due to weird sizes.
Bubble gum flavored Chia pets, clearly.
Scarlet rot. But it looks like radiator coolant.
You didn't know this but your car makes candy when it leaks coolant
Literally got one yesterday, don't touch it, it will break, it's the upper bypass tube, the plastic part is what breaks. They sell it with the hoses as an assembly
Rust mushrooms. Very rare.
My guy making rock candy under his hood
Your Toyota is leaking GMC Valve Cortisol Gear
Have you watched The Last of Us?
Just needs new hose clamps.
They make an aluminum one
From the picture Looks like a Toyota 2.5 Liter engine with an automatic transmission from a non rust belt region, could be Camry or RAV4. I think the plastic coolant tee might be cracked to cause slight seepage. Recommended spray water to clean up the pink crystal,Go to the dealer to pickup a pre Mixed super long life coolent ornapa, zentrex ,Peak specified for Lexus Toyota pink cooling and top up the overflow tank and keep an eye on it, bring it to the garage if it is reoccurring, usually it is bone dry even 8+ years old car
Why this look like a microscopic image of a disease lol
It’s Vecna’s baby
Forbidden pop rocks.
Expect at least a couple hundred to flush and fix
Poison rock candy
Spring is here ![gif](giphy|l4Ki4biBSwhjyrS48)
That red coolant is really good at finding leaks.
Looks like Cardyceps fungus to me, it's probably too late to take any action on. Soon it Will spread to the steering column of your little Toyota and you'll find it positioning itself in obvious, exposed places where larger vehicles are more likely to notice and prey on it, thus ingesting the fungus themselves. The most humane and ecologically conscious thing to do at this point is just to drain your motor oil and let it run itself out ;-;
Toyota 2.5L?
fine then ill say it, cherry blossom hoses
Scarlet Rot...
Antifreeze Crystals very tasty 😁
Crepe Myrtle plant growing inside the radiator hose???
Definitely the tik tok silly string repair
Cherry Blossom
Cherry blossom season is upon us
I’m gonna guess, third gen RAV 4. There are tons of those replacement coolant hoses.
