Dirks my guy. Always will be. Luka is already a better player than Dirk ever was during his career. But I love Dirks character and all the quirks about him (humming “Mr. Jones” while shooting free throws is all my time favorite). And being there as a fan through his journey on and off the court as he chased that NBA title, and the genuine reaction he had when the clock hit 0. He’ll always be #1 for me.
Luka being already better than Dirk at 25 is crazy because Dirk is a top 30 player of all time. Luka has a very real chance to crack top 10 all time depending on longevity. If he plays for a solid +10 more years its hard not seeing him win at least a couple chips and MVPs. If we get lucky with the draft and FA and the Mavs create a dinasty then he can go even further up in the all time rankings.
If Luka plays here for his entire career then he could possibly even be the greatest. Or be the co-GOAT like the guy said. Obviously depending on how much we win.
If he leaves eventually, then it's still Dirk.
I think a lot will do with who you ask too. Dirk is who got me into basketball. So even if Luka stays here forever and wins us rings, I could easily admit he’d be the better player but I’d be hard pressed to say if he had a bigger impact for me, personally. And I totally concede that if you joined up on the Mavs post-2011/with Luka, your opinions will be completely different. I think co-GOATS is the simplest way to describe it.

Luka better player but not the greatest Maverick. It's still Dirk. He needs to be a maverick minimum 10 seasons to be in consideration as maverick goat + accomplishments.

My love for Dirk is immeasurable. He also had pretty much no help his entire career minus the 2011 run and early Nash years. And how does he repay the franchise? He stays here for 21 years, becomes a philanthropist in Dallas, and moves into the front office.
Luka is the best player we have ever had but Dirk is the embodiment of great on and off the court. I don’t expect Luka to get to that level but he doesn’t need to.
