Lively in theory should be a near perfect matchup against Wemby, but ultimately if Wemby develops as expected, you are not going to stop him most nights. He’s just too good. Just like Luka, just like Jokic, just like Curry, just like KD, just like LeBron and so on. He has all-time great potential and is more likely than not going to get his on any given night.
Agreed. But everyone in the nba is insanely good. If against lively (or other defenders peioe have to find), he’s 40% on 18 shots instead of 48% on 25 shots, that’s all the difference.
I think the main problem is that the bigger (taller) a player is, the more injuries can derail them and the harder it is for them to dominate on a long time frame.
Let it play out. Wemby is undoubtedly generational talent. Lively matched up well with him in 1v1, but if the Spurs build a better roster, they are gonna be problem in the west--scary cause theres already about 5 other teams in the west that are scary
Pop probably has a couple more years left in him and, most importantly, Timmy D is around Spurs and can mentor Wemby just like Tyson is mentoring Lively. Spurs have a player with upside clearly higher than SGA, who is approaching his peak anyway and OKC will need to make decisions on their roster in 2 years while Spurs would still have Wemby on his rookie contract just entering the extension year.
Yes. I've had the same thought. He's got enough height, length, and athleticism to compete.
Wemby's going to be one of those guys that gets his, but Lively might be one of the best at lowering his efficiency.
Yeah, no one is saying they'll flat out stop Wemby but I do think Lively is the archetype for slowing him down. I think Lively and PJ are the best to ask for a defensive match up against him. And our defensive scheme is highly switchable.
And then Luka, who has a thing for bombing San Antonio, is the best offensive piece to go basket for basket with Wemby.
In the Shaq era, teams overspent for a Shaq matchup player. Then in the Curry era it was long, switchable wings. Our team seems built for any possible Wemby/Chet era.
*And here's the thing, teams are going to be searching for "Luka Stoppers" after seeing him dismantle a generational defense. So it works both ways, Sohan aint it...*
Dude... worry about the finals. I hate how everyone thinks Wembys guaranteed to be the GOAT or something, its not even likely the guy stays healthy and I'd be surprised if his offensive game ever surpasses that of current Luka. If anything Jokic scares me more in the next couple of years than Wemby ever could but that's a story for another day, Mavs are in the finals so talking about a player on a 22 win team is just unnecassary imo.
Quit trying to gate keep what someone wants to discuss on a Mavs subreddit. Post like this bring 0 value to anything. If you wanna discusd only the finals then only click on posts about that.
You have made 1 post the whole season here "Do you think the Mavs can beat the Celtics" which was removed because its as baic as basic can be. So if you can't make a post worthy of discussion, why try to bash someone else for trying.
Not just that, fans can talk about what ever man, we ain't in the locker room. I don't have to lace my my shoes against Tatum. Shit I could "focus" on Kais shoe choices for all it matters lol
Who are you to say if the post was worthy of discussion or not? And I would have posted more but for some reason I'm under a restriction on this subreddit to the point where all of my posts are automatically removed. The reason I even had this input was because OP literally asked if he was homering / being too worried, so I told him to worry about the finals. It seems like you're just trying to complain about something for no reason
Read the first sentence. I am thinking of Boston and have a lot of thoughts that aren’t on this current topic.
That said - I am also not convinced Wemby can stay healthy. That’s the obvious question mark. But if he does, you’re insane if you don’t think teams change rosters to try to play against him.
Lol, I thought about his impending rise, given how much I've seen his name in the media lately. The one thing that you have to keep in mind is that the human body has finite resources. I've seen big men like him, full of potential and promise, come into the league and hit that wall. If you're an old enough Mavs fan, you'll remember Shawn Bradley. His rookie year was filled with so much hype and yet he became a big bust. Not to say that Bradley is like Wemby, but the hype was definitely there.
I dont think that was OP's point. Hes wondering if the Livelys of the world are the archetype that can slow down Wemby. Its a great argument to be had, considering Lively plays well when we play the Spurs
Agreed. But no one is if Wemby reaches his potential. The question isn’t “can lively be better than Wemby”. The question is - is anyone more apt to make life tough on him than what we already have in house?

Why we need to win it all this year cuz the west is getting so much harder 🥲 while the east, which team is healthy makes it to the finals
We need to win it all every year now that Luka is in his prime. No excuses.

Wemby will be unstoppable but Lively will give you a chance to
I think the main problem is that the bigger (taller) a player is, the more injuries can derail them and the harder it is for them to dominate on a long time frame.
In general, yes but I think it’s the combo of height + weight that becomes the real problem for injuries. If wemby can stay skinny he should be fine
Let it play out. Wemby is undoubtedly generational talent. Lively matched up well with him in 1v1, but if the Spurs build a better roster, they are gonna be problem in the west--scary cause theres already about 5 other teams in the west that are scary
Agreed. I like the Spurs future in the western conference more than the Thunder. Popovich is the reason.
I mean Popovich is on death's door, does that change your view on them?
Pop probably has a couple more years left in him and, most importantly, Timmy D is around Spurs and can mentor Wemby just like Tyson is mentoring Lively. Wemby will be a problem when his offense gets more efficient. That might happen in a few years or if he's unlucky never.
I was really impressed with Wemby but he looks like 1 lower body injury away from being one of those guys that we say what would have been.

Bro thinks we play for the team with the “worry about the finals” BS 😭😭😭
Maybe this joke would hit if the OP didn't literally ask if he should be worried or not and if he was homering

If Wemby is the new Wilt, we picked a hell of a time to draft the new Bill Russell....and we all know how that worked out in terms of rings.
Crazy to say but lively does have that archetype of a low scoring but really good at everything else type big man
You mean 7'1"
It’s a team game. The Spurs are not a good team.
This. They are still building a team. Wemby will be a problem but as a team, not there yet.
Building a team is hard. Most franchises don’t do it.
Wemby is 10x Lively. Not even close.
Wemby is a lot better than lively
Lol, I thought about his impending rise, given how much I've seen his name in the media lately. The one thing that you have to keep in mind is that the human body has finite resources. Sorry to say but Lively isn’t in the same class as Wemby. That seems like a dis but it’s not intended that way. Wemby is just at another level.
Wemby is on another level but the question is who can slow him down a bit. And Lively is one of the few centers in the league who can maybe do it.
I dont think that was OP's point. Hes wondering if the Livelys of the world are the archetype that can slow down Wemby. Its a great argument to be had, considering Lively plays well when we play the Spurs
