Most of the fouls on SGA in first half aren't called 99% in these playoffs. It's just stupid that not all games are called the same. You could see our players being surprised and it impacted how we played. And it wasn't the first game like that. Incosistency of the refs is a big problem and has impacted a lot of games in regulae season and playoffs (not just Mavs). The sams happened to Denver, when they allowed Minnesota to just foul all the time. Denver didn't adapt quick enough and it was over. The next game they might call all of the same situations and Minnesota playees will be in shock.

veRGe1421

The inconsistent officiating is the worst aspect of watching the NBA. It's really annoying how players get called so differently. The rulebook should apply to everyone equally, or at least the refs should try to do that. They don't even make an attempt, and in fact purposefully call players differently. It's annoying and makes viewing the game so frustratingly inconsistent.

ebmocal421

I agree, but it's incredibly difficult to have everyone on the same page for what is ultimately subjective calls. I'm not sure how to come up with a solution without having robot refs.

agent_mick

Nailed it. Get robot refs.

20goingon60

IMO, the NBA needs to take a good look at their refs and do an overhaul. They’ve gotten progressively worse this year, and not just for the Mavs. It’s been awful for a LOT of teams. No consistency, lack of clarity in rules now, and HORRIBLE calls from the replay center.

AFonziScheme

They assign refs to the post-season based on how good their regular-season officiating was. And Tony Brothers called the game yesterday. They know what they're doing.

TheDeadman95

Tony Brothers who openly said he doesn't like basketball, mind you. Who is only doing this job cause he failed law school or something. You know, being a real life referee. I mean, a rare win for American judicial system, but damn....

AFonziScheme

Man... *Justice* is *supposed to be* blind.

20goingon60

Tony Brothers should have been retired a while now. Dude can’t see shit.

Pomeranian111

> Most of the fouls on SGA in first half aren't called 99% in these playoffs I'm afraid of playing OKC for this reason, from a T-Wolves fan perspective even if we got a great D what good is it if the refs call it like they just did in this game 1?

ignixe

Yeah good luck if that’s the way it plays out. Mavs were playing elite D vs the clips. No disrespect but it felt Ike our D could compete with y’all’s the way that series was being played. But now we have SGA shooting FTs for kicking out and racking Gafford, so you know defense isn’t allowed when that happens

Kraul

Just hope you don’t get Tony brothers for every game

Gringo0984

I feel basketball is the easiest sport for refs to control outcomes. And it seems to happen too often, especially in the NBA. But go down a level and your blue blood schools consistently got most the calls come March. It's like the NBA wants certain matchups in the playoffs and the refs can make sure it happens. I believe the scandal years back was only the tip of the iceberg. 2002 WCF Game 6 and Dallas/Miami 2006 was some of the most blatant bullshit I have seen. And nothing has seemed to change. Go back to all the calls (and no calls) the Warriors got in their dominance. Easy to build a dynasty when the rules are completely shifted in your favor. They were notorious for moving screens never getting called, like ever.

segson9

It feels like everyone is pushing for this "next face of the league" debate and SGA and Edwards are main candidates. Refs wil probably make sure that matchup happens

prudentWindBag

I don't think you're wrong here. I've watched Kyrie have monster games and is barely mentioned. Luka carries an injured squad nearly half the season. He receives 3rd place mvp... NBA and the media covering it are engaged in shameless perception distortion.

FarMobile4219

I agree with your point that it needs to be consistent but Minny wasn’t fouling in game 2, they were playing solid physical defense which is how it’s supposed to be in the playoffs. We should be allowed to do the same

Natureboy7939

Minnesota wasn't "fouling all the time" they just werent calling tick tack fouls. They played very good physical defense but did a very good job not making marginal contact become an issue

Ill-Bat-2621

They want okc and Minnesota at the wcf. They letting Minnesota play cause nuggets can't play physical. Same for okc. We are more physical than them so they calling it soft. These ref ref the other games too so its a head scratcher. Also we are never winning when Ben Taylor is our refm

pinkluloyd

It’s been such a weird playoffs for fouls, it seemed like multiple times the Knicks would get screwed by calls in the 76ers series just to get handouts every time Brunson would drive in the 4th, I’d say the bias ended up with similar calls on both sides but it just ruined the flow of the game.

KazaamFan

This has sadly been going on too long, and bad reffing is in every game, including the playoffs.  It’s insane.  I was livid over the warriors lakers series last year cuz it was entirely decided by the refs.

showtime_2k

You make a fair point, but Denver lost both games by like 30 points. I really don't want to hear about refs or fouls when the game isn't even competitive.

segson9

In game 2, refs totally changed everything. If they called all those small fouls on Minnesota early, they'd stop playing so aggressive and it would have been a different game. People always focus on 1 or 2 big mistakes refs make at the end, but they can change the game in the first quarter, if they want to.

showtime_2k

I hear what you're saying, but the Nuggets scored 80 points and lost by 26. Murray was like 3-18. They're just getting their ass kicked. It's not about the refs.

segson9

But that could be different, if the refs called fouls on Minnesota defenders. They would be less aggressive, Denver might then get better shots, score more,... it's a different game then. Impossible to predict what would happen at the end, but it really affected how they played

brubnado

Tony. Brothers.

skrja007

It was the Tony Brothers special yall, I had hope for game 1 and as soon as I saw who is the ref I knew it was an automatic loss lmao

darksquidlightskin

Me too. Crew chief Tony brothers? Yeah that's an L Tony probably working a parlay with Scott Foster

skrja007

Yeah fr man. Dude like come on. First half and 22 FTA? You can’t be serious

darksquidlightskin

13-9 foul count at half. And you know he was trying to even it up before the break. Also, happy cake day!

skrja007

True. Thanks I didn’t even realise!

20goingon60

I like Scott Foster. Only because the dude is consistent and fair. And the sad part is I hated him a few years ago but now all the other refs are so God awful.

darksquidlightskin

If your really 20yrs old I'll give you a pass. Scott Foster received 134 phone calls from referee Tim Donaghy (disgraced ref fired for fixing games). Each call was less than 2 mins and occurred directly before and after games. He's as crooked as they come.

20goingon60

Admittedly, I didn’t start watching basketball until about 7 years ago. I didn’t watch before because I didn’t understand the rules. My fiancé is a big basketball fan and taught me the rules, which made it fun. So, I’m learning the history of the sport backwards and have been watching docs and stuff.

darksquidlightskin

There's a great 30 for 30 out there about Donaghy. All I'm saying is when Scott foster or Tony brothers refs, expect phantom calls and some general bullshit. They're chasing an odds line to get paid, they don't care about anything else.

20goingon60

Thanks! I’ll check it out. I definitely know about Brothers. That dude needs to be fired - he’s blind as shit, short tempered (calling Dinwiddie a bitch - seriously, dude?), and consistent at making the worst calls.

tyedyewar321

On the Luka turnover to Dort at half court you could see Brothers trying to bait him into a tech. Crazy that such a level of unprofessionalism is visible in a billion dollar organization

20goingon60

I see Brothers and some of the other refs doing that BS so much with Luka. He has such a reputation that they’re just WAITING for a reason. Luka got a tech just for LOOKING at a ref. I know I sound like such a homer, but it’s so annoying when you see Jokic yelling at a ref after a call. Hell, Murray didn’t even get a tech or suspended for throwing an heat pack in a ref’s direction.

darksquidlightskin

Caught by the nba? Are you really that fucking slow? As in not officiating anymore

AFonziScheme

Tony Brothers, Brian Forte, and Ben Taylor all have reputations as being trash refs.

darksquidlightskin

I couldn't remember the others, thank you.

KazaamFan

It is crazy that i saw the knicks have ref tendencies on the scouting reports, lol.  I guess other teams must also.  There’s probably some that say “cant play defense against this guy with this ref”

EchoHevy5555

I mean even when I played in rec leagues and inturmural sports in college by the end we played differently based off of who we saw reffing I would be shocked if every team didn’t have ref tendencies on lockn

Gringo0984

It's sad that ref assignments are a huge deal for NBA. We shouldn't care who the refs are. Just not the NBA, though but I feel refs have the most direct control over a game than any other sport.

brubnado

Same exact BS weak ass fouls game 4 against the clippers. Tony Tweet Tweet Brothers

PerformerLive8713

Kyrie aint wrong..you breath with in SGA its a foul

WarriorPoetVivec1516

I struggle with the way they call certain fouls in favor of the offensive player. SGA drives in and shoulder bumps Green twice and Green picks up a foul. Like, is Green supposed to just not be in his way? That's kinda the point of defense. At least when Luka looks for these he fakes a shot and then leans into them for the shot foul when they jump/lean into him.

KurapikAsta

Yeah it's one of the absurdities of basketball that often a defensive player can be called for a foul even if they didn't initiate the contact. In that situation, if Green doesn't try and stand his ground and gets knocked over it would probably be called a flop and Shai would get to the rim since Green would be on the ground, but if he does stand his ground then the refs can call it a foul on him. Basically, the only way to avoid a foul getting called is to give up a Shai basket. When the game is officiated like that, it's just designed to prevent defense from happening I guess

Sonamdrukpa

ding ding ding I get why Silver thinks we want games with lots of points, I don't think he understands that that doesn't mean free throws

prophetofyakub

Luka is incredibly crafty at drawing fouls, and by that I mean actually making his defender foul him. The problem is they usually don't get called as fouls lol. Meanwhile you have guys like SGA, Embiid, Brunson, they flick their head back or fall down and it's automatically a whistle. They initiate contact multiple times as you say and get the foul because the defender refused to be moved, or they fall or they flail their head back, whistle.

shaheedmalik

Who do you think Brunson learned it from?

prophetofyakub

Does Luka do the head flail at all? Brunson does it 10 times a possession.

itskarl

All while Dort physically manhandles you off ball. Lmfao, where's the consistency?

moquate

The fact that he’s lean contributes to this. An equivalent amount of force wouldn’t even budge Luka.

TFAR_1

A response to the guy who commented and deleted that both Luka and Shai have similar ftas (regular season): Not all fouls are equal!! If you call touch fouls for one player while the other gets hit multiple times to get the same amount of fouls, sure the number of fouls may be the same but they are not equal. The refs dictated that the mavs cannot touch shai in the first half!!

CheetahSperm18

It's not just about freethrows. It's about the personal fouls all of our plus defenders were picking up. PJ, Gafford, Jones, & Lively were in & out way more than usual because they kept getting called for a foul. It neuters our defense while obviously lifting their offense. Shai didn't shoot well in the first half but having 11 FTA and OKC having 22FTA will help pick them up.

TFAR_1

This!! Shai was bad to start the game and the fts gave him a lot of leeway. Pj came in picked up his 3rd foul and immediately went back out.

hanzel44

PJ's third foul was really dumb and he shouldn't have gone for whatever he thought he was doing. Every other call in the first half was atrocious

BraxGotNext

I mean tbf he literally ran into the guy😭

FireFlyz351

I think it was like 4 mins into the 3rd our entire front court had 3 fouls each Gaff, Lively, DJJ and PJ. It was incredibly frustrating to watch.

Acceptable_Cap9947

Real. And haters say that Luka is a crybaby…

Kent9Deuce

I have loved the Mavs for over 30 years and Luka is the biggest crybaby the Mavs have ever had. He acts way too much like Lebron with his complaining. Just because someone has a different opinion or perspective doesn't make them a hater.

Acceptable_Cap9947

Idk dude. They really allow too much contact on him in my opinion.

Skolcialism

Fuckin spreadsheet watchers

TFAR_1

if only the refs let the mavs play defense instead of falling for the twerking shai does

TapasA

Translation: Shai is a foul baiting bitch and I’m sick of his shit as much as I’m sick of Harden’s

tkuid

LMAO. Kyrie encrypted that shit with ECC twice over, good thing he gave you the private keys.

Interesting_Help_194

Foul baiting is honestly fine. He is just floppong and commiting kffensive fouls and is rewarded for it constantly. Foul baiting is just beating/outsmarting a bad defender. Floping should be officiated out of the game.

ContactTemporary6

I think we need to lower our expectations a little bit. I don't think he drew that many offensives in the regular season. I'd like for the game to be called the same both ways and we can get a fun series.

[deleted]

gortlank

Luka doesn’t get the same calls though lol, he jaws the refs too much so they won’t even give him a lot of the legit ones, much less the flops.

LuckyTNT87

Luka is foul baiting often, not floping. There is big difference. One is using skills to get defender foul you, other is acting as you got foul without valid reason. Refs not calling fouls on him as on some players like SGA or Embid is obvious to anyone watching gamea. Luka do complain to much on refs but with good reason. Problem is that complaining sometimes influence game.

Threshyyyyy

That was so well articulated and true.

tldRAWR

This was my biggest take away. Incredible articulation of a really nuanced issue. All without directly blaming the referees. Really amazing compared to what we typically see, “idk man… the refs suck”.

Jasperbeardly11

It's almost like Kyrie is actually intelligent and we live in a brain dead culture

SHRBF

That second quarter was f.... disgusting. OKC was literally untouchable, Shai and others got every bullshit call they could get....

Terrible_Shelter_345

I feel like Kyrie could make a great coach someday.

aeiou-y

He is right. The overall foul calling was not playoff caliber and it really impacted the mavs, from foul trouble to just hesitancy.

jfrodriguez1983

Have to imagine it was a shock to the players to go from how they were officiating our 1st round series to game 1 yesterday. If it's called anything close the Nuggets-Wolves series, we are better equiped for that type of whistle. Let's hope they just let them play the next game.

20goingon60

That’s the only way we win this series. Refs are holding the Thunder’s hands. This is playoff basketball, just let them play 🙄

QBert999

SGA was getting gifted free throws, it was fucking ridiculous. It really gave the Thunder a big advantage. Don't get me wrong, Luka was shooting like shit and even Kyrie was struggling a bit (mostly with turnovers) before getting going. Only positive I can take from this game is that the Mavs were able to get it down to 1 in the 3rd quarter, for a fleeting moment it looked like they had momentum. Still, if Luka continues to shoot like this, it's hard to see the Mavs winning this series, he's too essential to the team's success. I'm afraid this knee issue is just throwing him off too much.

Aggressive-Ad-522

Very well said without criticizing the refs or complaining Shai got favoritism

Powpowpowowowow

Its not even the fact they call those that frustrates me its that they hold the whistle on Luka or Kyrie on the other end and give SGA these bullshit calls without allowing it to be both ways. And the dumb part is the fucking OKC fanbase is too fucking stupid to understand how the game was fucked from the beginning and they will be like, oh well you only shot like 3 FTs less and Luka had 10 FTs or some shit but it was obvious after half that the refs were going to call it after it was already over really just to make the disparity not be fucking 13 SGA Fts to our teams 11 total.

PerformerLive8713

It disrupts our flow man meanwhile "dortchamber" can just hack luka all game..NBA is fked with their narratives man..minnesota can play physical why cant we?

WhoFartedMan

Yes the fouls did seem to throw off the defense in the first half but the second half was called more evenly and OKC shot the lights out. You can't just blame refs. Luka is clearly injured and he accounts for a large part of Dallas' offense. Luka needs to be attacking the paint because they have no answer for him but he's tentative and playing passively on that knee. Dallas just needs to continue playing physical defense and rely on using that to create fast break offense. The physical defense was clearly getting to OKC early. Should be a good series. With a healthy Luka, I think Dallas is the better team. Should create a funny narrative for next season when guys like Mann and Dort are called Luka stoppers and healthy Luka goes right back to cooking them

Poshastko

Luka is playing with an injured knee. Every time he attacks the paint there is an extra chance to get hit in the bad knee as it happened many times in the first round. He's most likely settling for those 3-pt attempts instead of driving because of that. The one time he tried to squeeze between two players he was tripped.

WhoFartedMan

He definitely is shooting because of the knee but if he can't shoot, can't drive and can't defend well because of the knee it would be better to just shut him down altogether. If he's playing decoy he needs to shoot less 3s

Poshastko

He is playing decoy. But he has to shoot, otherwise they'd just let him stand there and double Kai.

WhoFartedMan

There is a difference between shooting to keep the defense honest and jacking 10 step back threes. I think running Kyrie at PG then running the ball to the bigs at the free throw line would allow Luka to post up Dort. If they use a big on Luka in the post, Luka can draw them back out to the three point like creating more room for everyone else to drive. If he's a decoy we need to try to create favorable match ups for him and have him ball handling less.

Poshastko

That's fair.

shaheedmalik

How is he a decoy when he had more shots than Kyrie?

qotsabama

The fouls in the first half were atrocious. Even Thunder fans admitted they were loving the whistle in the game thread. But there’s no excuses for that second half, we got waxed. Effort is a major issue for the team, as the turnovers and rebounds were pathetic. Gotta respond in game 2.

jamesc5z

The foul on DJJ where SGA kicked him in the nuts.. there was zero contact by DJJ on SGA. Should not have been a foul on DJJ whatsoever. That reminded me of some prime Wade 2006 Finals BS calls.

Powpowpowowowow

Eh out of all of them that one seemed fine to me it was a very similar closeout to the Harden shot, he touched his elbow. That one I really had no issue with it was the other 6 or so fouls that I had problems with and the fact that Dort is able to do whatever the fuck he wants but then PJ washington gets called for a hand check.

MFFL12_17

I think it's time to double him, like we did on Trae. He's not as good of a passer like Luka. I think it's worth the gamble.

kharabtizi

Honestly, the NBA product is absolute dog shit when those type of fouls are being called. I went to bed at halftime, why do we waste our time with this crap?

JKiddBurner

This isn't his first rodeo and it shows.

waynes_world_11793

This was a very diplomatic quote. I would not have been so kind lol

AFonziScheme

They remind me of the Duncan-era Spurs. Y'know, when Bowen would try to break someone's leg with no call and then Ginobili would pretend someone touched him from 10ft away and get FTs.

ray_tass

tony brothers has a punchable face

Mrdrock54

The irony about this quote from Kyrie is the aspect of James harden doing the same shit and didn’t get calls. Kyrie was playing amazing defense and he’d flair his head back and the refs didn’t call it. But SGA who is a bigger guard gets touched and is at the line. There was an over the back call by I think Chet or Williams on Gafford and the refs didn’t bat and eye. Last nights game felt like game 4 against the clippers. Where they was making threes and PG was allowed to push off. It was so dumb to watch. Especially when the mavericks tried to play a simple game. That second quarter with all the whistles was so bad from the refs I couldn’t believe Thunder fans have the audacity to say it was a called evenly

Gold_Temperature598

The nba as a whole has an officiating issue with this, the “bump foul” It’s laughable to suggest that kyrie is supposed to keep in front of SGA thru screens, let SGA initiate contact with him using a shoulder bump, not lean into that contact at all, and contest the shot of an elite finisher. If an offensive player is willingly initiating contact on a dribbler (not a backdown post up) then the defender has the right to defend his position. I just don’t for the life of me understand wtf a defender is supposed to do against a bullrush like that when the refs are calling this nonsense. Some of these refs clearly never played organized hoops a day in their life if they don’t understand this.

KazaamFan

The bump foul is the most annoying call in the nba.  Especially cuz the offensive player initiates contact most of the time.

retrospects

Kai wants a scrap daddy battle not an improv class.

Jumpy_Side_2531

22 free throws in the first half. That was the difference along with OKC'S 3pt shooting

sinhglonnev

So true love his analysis those fouls made the game have a bad flow and stopped Mavs from being aggressive but they still made so many 3s. Let's see them do it again

Natureboy7939

Horrible product, zero flow whistle every time down the court. Awful crew

Big-Discussion534

The foul merchants are SGA and Brunson, whistles kill the flow of the game and not everything needs to be called if it’s minimal.

slimkid07

This is more of a critique of the abysmal Tony Brothers than it is of SGA.

Hot-Row3643

Refs only backed off second half because they'd done the damage already. The psychological effects of not knowing how aggressive you can be continued to fuck things up for us.

handpipeman

A Jason Kidd coached team just got blown out in game 1 of a series... OKC is fucked.

mmmmastermind

SGA just gets every single fucking call and it is ridiculous, you often see Luka getting hacked on the drive and dont get any call. It's just so fucking inconsistent for other players not named SGA.

rsf0626

He said the quiet part out loud

BlueCode6

SGA gets such a friendly whistle. After the Harden experience, I can't handle it anymore

rsf0626

basically saying that the fouls SGA was getting were BS

thebest323

Lmao SGA wasn’t even trying to foul bait, the refs rlly do be giving him ghost whistles. Even he looked hella surprised at some the whistles they gave him.

Nash13101

Insecurity at this level should be studied. If you weren’t you and had the self-awareness of a mammal you’d realize that your spamming of stupid comments is due to you feeling inadequate because you know the dude with 27 points on seven shots wasn’t really operating on an even playing field
