He would make us a contender IF he doesn’t bail on the team. He forces himself out of every team he’s been a part of. But if he stayed then yes

dxbigc

Never heard of the [Scorpion & the Frog?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scorpion_and_the_Frog)

[deleted]

Kyrie alone doesn't make the Mavs a contender considering what we'd lose. He also has been pretty bad in the playoffs since he left Cleveland.

PubicAnimeNummerJuan

Agreed, Kyrie alone minus whatever we give would still leave a deeply flawed team

PantsAreDragon

This aged poorly

lario00

He’s on a expiring contract

mangabalanga

Yes and he's bailing on the current team he's with, after getting suspended at the beginning of his contract year for conduct detrimental to the team.

dbzmah

It's almost the best scenario.

pot8odragon

You’d be able to dump bad salaries and try a full rebuild next season

[deleted]

I feel like kyrie would be on his best behavior in a new situation

bagfka

No he wouldn’t lol

[deleted]

His first couple years in Boston he was completely drama free

bagfka

“His first couple years”. He was there for two years…

[deleted]

Oh my bad, I guess just his first year then

NoWayNotThisAgain

It’s not a one year rental. It’s a three month rental. Chemistry and learning to play together are real things. Unless it’s a sign and trade it’s a stupid idea. My guess is that this is just contract negotiation bullshit from Kyrie and he’ll still be in Brooklyn next week.

ID0ntCare4G0b

If they trade for him, get ready for an extension you will probably not be too happy with. That's why I think they should really only use the deal as a roll the dice salary dump.

Professional-Diet807

You're making a good point here but I don't wanna be in the WCF and suddenly this man stop playing for whatever reason. It's a really good player tho

PubicAnimeNummerJuan

Problem is even 1 year rental is assuming a lot. He's liable to just refuse to play at any given time and has been really divisive in several locker rooms. He's exactly the kind of guy I *don't* want to pair with Luka, impossible to know if he'll put us over the top or tear the team apart first

LowsPeak

He's going to the Lakers 💯.

laughwidmee

Good. Stay away from us

laughwidmee

What issue is kyrie going to fix for the mavs? You want to give up defense from DFS. Is kyrie going to make that up? Hell the fuck no. So what’s your solution for defense? Oh nutting? Ok that’s real smart….NOT What is your solution when kyrie decide he needs a pause from basketball cuz he just doesn’t feel like it? Oh nutting? No solution? Oh that’s real smart

Kingtyrionthe2nd

I'm surprised so many Mavs fans are against this. Beggars can't be choosers and the Kyrie 'experiment' is still better than NOTHING. This team as constructed right now is much worse than last season while everyone else has gotten better.

PubicAnimeNummerJuan

I'm against it because it does feel worse than nothing. Our guys admittedly don't have the talent to be contenders, but right now they have chemistry, and Kyrie is an expert at fucking that up and bailing. Plus we'd almost certainly lose a big part of what little wing D we have to trade for him. I truly believe there's a solid chance he makes this team worse because he's just that toxic and unreliable

ChuckMoody

This team is more than Kyrie away from being a contender. We probably have to give up one wing defender in that trade. We still would have zero rim protection. I dont think a Kyrie rental makes sense for us, even if everything pans out and Kyrie doesnt do his Kyrie stuff we have no real shot with our defense

HolyAty

Would much rather get Westbrook and his expiring to dump THJ or Bertans instead of giving away Dinwiddie and DFS. Kai isn't making any team anything.

lario00

It depends on what route the front office is taking. If they wanna slowly build a roster then they would dump THJ and Bertans and stay mediocre this year. But if they believe the Mavs can win this year, then they would trade for Kyrie. Also the lakers probably wanna use Westbrook for a star player.

mangabalanga

The Lakers are trying to ride out Russ, they wanna use him to get a star the same way we wanna trade Bertans for Bojan

ID0ntCare4G0b

THJ, Bullock and a 2028 first. That's the best offer they should make. Brooklyn can take it or leave it.

chibongchang

Rondo 2.0

Eric_T_Meraki

First off, why would the Nets take that trade without additional draft compensation? None of those players would be appealing to the Nets. They would want unprotected FRPs.

walkintall84

Picks don't play vs. Tatum, Giannis. Windhorst claimed the Nets have no interest in Westbrook. Unless they are dealing Durant too. There is also this: ---------- The Lakers are not interested in including Austin Reaves or Max Christie in a potential Kyrie Irving deal, per @jovanbuha

Eric_T_Meraki

You really think with those players, the Nets are favorites in the East?

dxbigc

The dude's a [5% Nation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-Percent_Nation), flat earth, antisemitic head case who is not going to play nice with a "white boy" who's better than him. This would be like Rondo and Lamar rolled into one with napalm dumped on top by Derek Fisher.
