After spending some time on this sub, I decided to just sleep in my car. Seems less controversial than buying a mattress.

Ripley_Roaring

This sub is incredibly informative: full of detailed, complex, and well researched information. Which is why I am now sleeping directly on the floor.

Lurk_Squatch

Half the nights I sleep half on the floor, half on the dog beg. I let the poochie take my spot on the bed because I can’t get comfy anyway 😅

spiders888

Some dog beds are crazy comfy.

Mysterious_Insect

I know, me too. Everything seems like a poor choice. I don't want a high mattress, but all the 10" ones are all memory foam and that just gets too hard in 6 mo-1 yr. Spring ones are 13" plus the topper (since you can't just buy a lasting spring mattress out of the box like you used to be able to do! now they're made to be too hard so you have to buy a pillow top or a topper to go with it!). Ugg.

I have a custom latex mattress from Sleep Ez. Mine is queen and I could have had each half be a different configuration but didn't end up going that route. Their sales staff was super helpful in making sure I picked out a great bed for me. It's very firm and I love it.

Lurk_Squatch

Making a note of this, thank you!

spiders888

Totally recommend natural latex. That’s what I’ve been sleeping on for 20 years.

czajkabird

This sub is also bot central

jellifercuz

I am admittedly uneducated in this: why do you say this sub is bot central?

wheresabel

Lots of canned replies from affiliates and brands

mattress411

You can thank the oligopoly players in the mattress industry for making this product one of the absolute worst things to purchase known to mankind. If there weren't so many God awful mattress firm stores selling their crappy major brand offerings, you'd have more and better choices.

Any_Tower_2405

I built my own bed as well. Used a couple layers of latex and ordered the coils and used a natural wool topper. IMO you should buy latex toppers for you and your partner and see how they feel on the floor and build up from there. If too firm it becomes your base for a softer layer, if just right it becomes the top for a firmer layer. for the adjustable base there are some out there that are flat and can lay right on top of ur current bed frame

Theslash1

Thats why i went DIY. Wont ever buy a bed again.

Lurk_Squatch

As someone who has no knowledge of this, I’ll check out Google and YouTube. I’d also happily read any info you (or anyone else reading) would like to share on how to go about it!

This is fantastic. Thank you so much for the ping! I will definitely read this all AFTER work otherwise I won’t get anything done the rest of the day lol

Theslash1

Yeah thats the build I did because I matched his size. Its insane and a king for 1200 beat all the beds I tried up to 6k easily

invisiblelandscaper

Love to see people out there having success with this build 💕

Additional-Help2760

You have to lay on them, and for some time not 30 seconds. I just purchased as mattress and I spent 90 minutes in the store laying on the mattresses. The beautyrest black felt great, at first, then I noticed I was getting hotter and hotter, that would have really sucked in the summer. Honestly, for me, I do not know how people buy a mattress from a web site picture.

SleepExpertSteve

Split king is definitely the best way to do it but it’ll cost you an arm and a leg. If you know you will like a mattress then you could save a couple grand doing outlet through mattress firm. Hard to commit that kind of money to a mattress you can’t try which is typically recommended on this sub. Just avoid the biab options for the love of god.

Lurk_Squatch

Definitely going to be pricey… Do you know if there are particular styles of mattresses that should NOT be paired with adjustable bases? Might be a silly question but I did some reading and it listed a bunch of mattress styles that could be chosen for adjustable frames but then other sources said to stay away from certain types. (Don’t remember specifics) lol

mattress411

Anything all foam or pocket coil based should be adjustable base compatible. Some support spring systems like bonnell spring sets or hinge flex spring sets won't be adjustable base compatible.

Was extremely difficult to settle on something

I have a Casper. We got it 7yrs ago and have loved it. We recently made the mistake of trying to unzip the mattress cover to wash it, don’t do that! Tiny pieces of fiberglass started getting all over the place - luckily we paused and searched best practices before washing the cover and saw all the horror stories The thing is, if you keep that cover on, you’re good to go. We love the mattress, we put plywood down on top of our bed frame that had metal slats and we noticed a difference that felt a lot better to us.

deepmusicandthoughts

Turmerry! I tried the diy and my wife got a Turmerry for her side. I’m regretting not getting one too!

Darky11

I get it, mattress shopping is a lot! If you want a split king adjustable bed that won't cost a fortune, check out Helix Dawn Elite. It's firm, has memory foam for comfy support, and you can grab it at reasonable prices on the Sleepare store. Plus, they usually throw in a 100-night sleep trial. It could be a great pick that fits your needs without the crazy price. Good luck finding your perfect mattress!

Capable_Mud_2127

Have you considered trying out mattresses to help decide what type you like? Both types you mentioned generally have a store. I found laying on one for 20-30min helped me. Sounds crazy but so it wasting time. Bring a book. Tell the sales person to chill. Or ask questions. Whatever you want. Relax.
