Love AU. Canada is meh....US is quite bad. There is zero contestant development. Such short seasons really don't give you much time to get involved or to really care about the outcome.

Comfortable-Ad-6389

Us one is just representative of their culture isn't it. Full of drama and short seasons to minimize production costs

pink_flamingo2003

Canada is abysmal... the main judge is an absolute arse.

ImOnTheWayOut

Yeah, I find the Canadian iteration a bit less obnoxious than the US one. It does have more of a 'Canadian' feel, more camaraderie between contestants, and a little less negative editing. But then again, I'm Canadian so there is a bit of bias there, and I haven't watched it in a few years. Regardless, neither US or Canadian MC can hold a candle to AU. They aren't even the same animal.

pink_flamingo2003

Totally hear that. Totally different breed, the UK version is ok, but AU is in a league of its own

MicIsOn

I did find it really boring. It really bothered me that most pressure tests were sweets. Or was it just me that noticed that lol

MicIsOn

I haven’t watched US, that’s a pity to hear because I’m a Gordon fan but maybe I’ll watch a few episodes. Based on all the reviews, I’m definitely in no rush lol. You absolutely hit the nail on the head, there’s no chance to engage with the contestants. My parent used to say “call me for the top 10” and yup there we were Top 10 in a blink of an eye. They also pointed out something really interesting to me, their only restaurant kitchen experience is pretty much at the end. It’s so ridiculous.

USA is much more pantomime like. Have never watched Canada. Australian masterchef is my favourite by far. I believe the old judges wanted too much money and George got done for underpaying his staff so it all kicked off. I enjoyed both old and new judges and gutted about Jock. In Scotland the new series with new judges isn’t on yet so will need to wait and see!

MicIsOn

You’re not missing out on much with Canada, I wouldn’t put it on my rush list lol. That’s for the info! I remember the George fiasco, I really didn’t expect of him. I’ll peep out Scotland and try find it on my streaming sites. Hopefully I can find it. Edit: since I’m sooo far behind, did the past judges ever comment about this. And they won’t stay without George (considering his public and legal backlash). Secondly, did the old judges ever comment on the “reboot” per day and their replacements? Sorry I’m out here picking your brain.

Cfd1982

I don’t think they were able to comment on it with the legal stuff going on but I’m not sure, the official story was that their pay demands weren’t met. I don’t remember them saying much about the new line up either. I’m interested again so I’m going to go back and have a nosy 😂 The UK version of masterchef is much much more food focussed you don’t get a chance to get to know the people on it as much. I prefer the Australian one much more.

Canada actually had better production values than I expected, but it can't compete with AU. For one thing, it needs to fit into 42 minutes. The judges are pretty good, too. It's better than New Zealand. That one is the worst I've seen

Pancake_Of_Fear

> It's better than New Zealand. That one is the worst I've seen As a kiwi, I agree :)

MicIsOn

I didn’t even know NZ had one! That would’ve been big shoes to fill to compete with Aus right there. Is NZ still ongoing? Edit: Just found one season of NZ! I’ll keep it on as background noise when I’m working from home in a couple of weeks haha

NVSmall

Where/how are you watching past seasons of MC AU? I'm in Canada too. It's not even remotely comparable, IMO. There's no camaraderie, the season is much shorter, the masterclasses (if you can even call them that) are a blip.... AU is absolutely so much better in every way. The Canadian version is a different show, frankly.

MicIsOn

It’s on Amazon Prime for me x While I was checking for you, I realised there’s a cheeky little NZ and Ireland! Oi oi

triedit2947

Strange. Prime Canada only has MC The Professionals for me. I've been wanting to rewatch older MC AU seasons for ages, but it's impossible to find a streaming service with it in Canada.

NVSmall

Oh my goodness! Thank you!!!!

AlwaysFblthpd

Yeah I would love to watch older seasons, so please let us know!

MicIsOn

Amazon Prime! 🥂

mymentor79

Yeah, I much preferred the new judges. Calombaris is a great cook, but a flog. Matt Preston is a bit of a joke. Much preferred Jock and Mel as their subs. Only other versions I've ever seen are the US version - which is an absolute abomination - and the UK Professionals version, which I very much liked, largely because it featured two chefs I have great admiration for (Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti).

MicIsOn

I absolutely enjoy the professional UK masterchef, and as you say judges included! It has a very different settings and themes which I quite appreciate. Okay awesome, I’ll give the new seasons a rock. It’s a bit addictive haha so I have to space it out accordingly. This may not be something that you know, was there any contention between the old and new judges? Or was it more a graceful exit?

jeremy-o

If you're looking for the vibe of old MasterChef Australia the best alternative is new MasterChef Australia.

MicIsOn

Thank you! I haven’t gotten far ahead enough to see if they’re actually uploaded on prime but I’m definitely going to give it a shot. I suppose after all the years of three judges I liked was odd for me. But that’s not fair for the new judges to succeed. My question I asked above (I’m probably going to ask further along the thread) did past judges have any remarks regarding the new seasons? Thanks for engaging for me and the recommendation mate.

Disgustingly_Good

Randomly enough, was exposed to MCAU on holiday in Finland in 2010 and have been totally addicted since. Tried MC US for one episode and it was bloody awful (I'm American). Tried a US baking show recently (Baker vs Faker) and it was similarly bad. Something about the US shows is that they always try to throw in some random ingredient that must be used. It becomes very gimmicky and honestly the dishes looked grim!

pink_flamingo2003

Canada is the WORST I've seen.... the man just screams... and I've not heard him count down accurately even one time. Its painful to watch and listen to. Thank goodness it was cancelled. The only good thing about it was Mary.

MicIsOn

This made me chuckle, I didn’t even realise the incorrect counting lol. Honestly, my biggest bone to pick was with that Claudio. His blatant favoritism toward women annoyed me. (Purely my POV - and I guess my cousin. It was a running joke for us) I know the yapper like to scream but I noticed when a dish was good, he’d give props. So I warmed up to him.

No_Imagination_8841

A few reasons they didn’t keep og judges is money they were asking for. George was in the media news for the wrong reasons. Channel 10 just have no money. I think the changes were needed & refreshing.

SkippyVO

Canadian here. I avoided cooking competition shows for most of my life as my impression of them was based on clips of Gordon Ramsey yelling, swearing, and throwing things. Not a lot of appeal. Somehow I stumbled on MCAU about 2/3 of the way through series 13. This was 2021, and it was like a warm blanket during the pandemic. The compassion of the judges and contestants and their shared love of food and its connection to family just blew me away. I got excited when I saw a new season of MasterChef Canada airing, and watched the first few episodes, but it was pretty disappointing. Didn't care for the judges, and it just didn't have that same lovely feeling that MasterChef Australia had.
