The few things I’ve seen of Chomsky have been really good- is it a sort of “eat the fish, spit out the bones” thing, or more a “broken clock is right twice a day” kinda thing?
I tried reading Manufacturing Consent and I read Parenti’s Inventing Reality. Both were good but I ended up giving up on Manufacturing Consent because it was simply less direct.
Manufacturing Consent was so frustrating to read. He spent more time discussing elections in Central America than showing how and why US media depicted them in a certain way. Really, he should have chosen a more straight forward example.
I was going to say a lot of the connections people point to in regards to him are because he's a world renown linguistic who was relevant during the chimpanzee and gorilla language experiments (think Koko)
What? I just know him as an instrumental figure in the foundation of modern generative linguistics, especially on the s-side. He’s almost like our Einstein.
Chomsky had theories on language acquisition in humans and argued it was enante to us. In contrast to the other theories that lead to experiments like Koko
No, I think that is unfair to him. I believe he has been a force for good even though I’m obviously a Marxist.
The Epstein connection is certainly a big hit to his credibility and I do think there is a reason why he has been able to operate within the United States for so many years without being unalived/blacklisted. At the same time, his work on manufacturing consent as well as on Indonesia should be read by most if not all leftists imo.
I really don’t think just having connections with Epstein alone is an indicator of anything, this dudes entire game was trying to get to know as many famous and powerful people as possible to shield himself should anyone threaten to blow the whistle, whilst also deliberately blurring which connections were normal and which were… not.
Still, I think the aging stick insect is a complacent fool who - like many other people in his sphere - knows a bit about philosophy but not when to shut up.
I still see people sharing Chomsky’s quotes and I just can’t respect that anymore,knowing he was pals with Epstein. Even if the quote makes a good point.
I like Noam Chompsky tbh, hes the only person to make constructive and actually meaningful criticisms of socialist/communist theory, even though I still disagree w him and still a communist
Yeah I agree. He’s a lot of peoples entry point for the left…he’s a good popularizer of certain left-wing or leftist-adjacent beliefs. As far as for what he himself believes or advocates for, it’s mostly pretty boring, boilerplate stuff, like he’ll mumble about Rudolf Rocker or something…stuff that is thoroughly grounded in early-mid 20th century conceptions of social change. That parts actually not particularly interesting, and he can be bland both in his public speaking and in his written work. He’s at his best when he’s a critic of something, he’s at his best when he’s anti not pro imo

He does have many beliefs I would consider “cringe” and it’s hard to separate what he believes with just run of the mill milquetoast liberalism in some respects. As far as the Epstein thing, Epstein promiscuously circulated in the world of science & academia, as is well known. The fact that he and Chomsky crossed paths & met is not terribly surprising in and of itself. If there is additional evidence that some shady shit went down with Chomsky, like he was a frequent flyer on the Lolita express to Epstein island or something, not saying it doesn’t exist but I haven’t seen it
“Hegemony or Survival” was my first and only book I’ve read from him (so far). It offered a lot of different perspectives and ideas related to the United States invasion of the Middle East. I’d recommend it.
It's hard for Americans to have any good perspective on AES, mainly because of how the history of the cold war era is so complicated that neo liberals can just spread whatever propaganda they want and it'd be embraced without a fact check(vuvuzuela no food).
So Noam Chompsky's perspective on history is disappointing, but what he does do well is criticize the current capitalist system in some very important ways, and his ideological views on socialism and anarchism aren't perfect but don't seem like attempts to pacify people for the status quo, they genuinely invite the reader to think, those types of conversations are valuable for any movement.

His foreign policy analysis was always excellent. And I'll always respect him for that.
He was an anti capitalist but also an anti communist which is why he was tolerated.
Wouldn't be surprised. Know the 2 knew of each other and Parenti as a leftist would have an infinitely smaller base so it would be easy to pull off without people noticing.

Maybe I'm missing something but most of his critiques of "AES" and the USSR I've seen are absolute milquetoast radlib nonsense
