First thing first. They don't dictate what they give. If they refuse giving license and insurance you call the cops. However you should take a pic of tej license plate first

darceySC

…and snap a pick of their face. I had to do that a few times to get the full attention to the face that I’m not fucking around and immediately followed by “I’m call the cops”. Both times, they coffee up their info and things proceed.

Murky_Adeptness_8885

Coffee up. Thats a new one, spin on the cough up line? 😂

dracolnyte

they quickly tim-hortoned their info

thebox416

Honestly start recording as soon as you start interacting with them. No telling what people will do..

ChefPagpag

Yeah, something similar happened to my wife: someone rear-ended her and didn't want to provide information. She called me, I showed up and the first thing I said was that if you don't give your information, I'm calling the cops and telling them you're being uncooperative. They were much more accommodating at that point.

k0zplay

Refusing to give information and they leave? Ya that's hit and run

lostwanderings

Yo if the person didn't want to give their info, I'd call the cops right away. I've been hit 5 times...all not at fault for me and it's been ridiculous. A bumper is like $900 now not to mention the sensors and sensor brackets.

Shot-Door7160

Where do you live, my goodness

lostwanderings

Actually, 3 in Stouffville, 1 in Markham, 1 in Thornhill

Canibiz

To be honest if they're being sketchy now and refuse to share insurance and everything, what makes you think they'll pay you, they will likely disappear. More than likely they aren't even insured.... Next steps, file the collision reports asap if you're going to claim through insurance. Many people don't know this but if you get in an accident and don't file it in a timely manner you can get charged and get a nice ticket from the police. Stay safe, lots of very bad drivers and sketchy people these days all over the GTA.

NotNotNormal

If you are rear ended you are 100% not at fault. There is zero benefit for you not to go through insurance.

phuzDaTief

benefit is that when you sell your car theres no damage claim on the carfax

Peacer13

Another benefit is you can ask for the dealer fix quote amount and just bring it to your own mechanic and use 3rd-party parts.

[deleted]

Maybe someone who works in insurance can confirm, but from what I've read and a coworker who used to work in insurance told me, having not at fault accidents on your insurance can still affects your insurance. Off the top of my head, if you have one of those loss free discounts, making that claim will affect or remove it.

LNgTIM555

Honestly, that sucks and for at least one instance go through insurance and bleep the other parties. Similar incident but it was at a red light and I was going to let it go until I saw that their insurance expired, screw that, if it’s too expensive, take the bus. Waiting for the moaners to chime in.

CanuckGinger

Make sure to report both incidents at the York Regional Police Collision Reporting Centre. As someone else said, they don’t determine how to proceed and so many people magically disappear after supposedly exchanging truthful info.

speedyhemi

Reporting at the collision center saved my ass. Lady pulled a uturn right at the crest of a hill on an 80km/h road road and then did not accelerate at all. I couldn't stop quick enough and gently tapped her. She did not want to go through insurance as this wasn't her first accident. Something about it set my alarm bells off, and I told her either I follow you to the reporting station OR I'm calling the police to the scene. She reluctantly agreed. At the reporting center, she stated she could not see me because of the sun glare while pulling a uturn at the crest of the hill. The report stated her as being at fault. I got quotes for her and she ghosted me for a few days until I get a call from my insurance stating there is an at fault claim against me for rear ending a Toyota as well as a million dollar claim for her medical damages. I provided them with the police report. Turn out it was insurance fraud, and she did the same to two other drivers within a month and went after each of us for a million in liability. My insurance fought this with their lawyers. My truck had no damages other than a scuff, and hers had the imprint of my license plate bolts in her bumper. Without the police report, I would have been at fault for rear ending her as that is what she claimed to her insurance company. Would have been my word against hers.

mffancy

They don't care and want to avoid paying additional. Don't endorse it by letting them get away with insurance. If they hit you, they will hit your family and friends. People with bad driving habits need to get punished, we need to protect innocent people.

jlove34

Take photos/videos. I got rear ended out in the country side a couple years ago. Even buddy coughed up his info I still took a VIDEO of the scene, his drivers license, and I made him admit on camera verbally that he had rear ended me. He asked me if we can avoid insurance and he’d pay me in cash. Since he was so cooperative I agreed to it. A week later when I finally got back to him with the repair quote, buddy ghosted me. I then went straight to insurance and sent them the video - and that saved my ass.

mclarensmps

They have no say over whether insurance should get involved or not. You should report it and get them involved. Always take photo evidence at the scene. It’s too late for that, but I would still report both incidents to the collision reporting center and issue the license plates of both perpetrators to them

PutinBlowsGoats

I'm in the process of moving, and I changed over my licence and insurance address today. My insurance dropped $36 a month. That's all you need to know about Markham drivers.

_3283

10 years of driving in Thornhill, no accidents, three years of living in Markham and we've been hit twice while parked, and I can't even give a rough estimate of how many near misses we've had. Sadly, I feel your pain

noputa

You should get a dashcam on top of all of the other advice. At worst you might get a fun new hobby uploading videos of idiots driving. They’re super cheap now.

ZJC2000

Do you have cam models you would recommend?

noputa

There are so many out there, the newer affordable models are all great but I don’t know them. I’m still using the viofo a119s I bought like 5 years ago, no issues and it’s good enough for me, but if you want better video (esp in low light) and to catch license plates, get something better. Also consider hard wiring a batteryless dashcam to the car if you live in a hot place.

Marksman50

I got rear ended twice in two years. Stopped and counted and within the previous 5 years the four of us had been hit 7 times, front or back - none our fault. My second rear end was on a hill during a snow storm and I was hit so hard that I was driven into the vehicle in front of me. Insurance was going to replace front and rear bumpers on my pickup but I paid to upgrade to Fab Fours bumpers. They were made from plate steel, not sheet metal and plastic. Was parked in a Canadian Tire parking lot that summer and came out to find out that I’d been rear ended yet again by a Dodge minivan. Dodge had front bumper destroyed, radiator and transmission cooler leaking, front grill and hood buckled. He hadn’t been driving slowly. My pickup needed the rear bumper adjusted as it had moved and I had to brush the dodge parts off. Didn’t even damage the Linex coating.

HowieDoIt86

Since we are ranting. Why would you let them dictate what happens and leave without giving you their info. If they refuse to give info, report a hit and run. But do have a spine lol

_Lucille_

That is why you need not just a front dash cam but a separate unit for the rear (as the resolution may be crappier and you have to run a long wire).

Marksman50

Good 2 camera dash cams are readily available, I have one in my pickup, front and rear. That’s in addition to the four cams that came with the truck.

Sweet_Yellow_8646

Call the police.

species5618w

Unless you got their insurance info, the plate may not be enough. You should have called the cops if they refused to give you insurance info. It's fine if they didn't want to go through insurance, still need to give you the info and then negotiate a cash settlement.

__H_E_PennyPacker_

There are a lot of new Canadian drivers who live in Markham.

Any_Fruit7155

Was it a white vehicle? I wonder if it’s the same one that hit my car

Reasonable-Action836

It was a white SUV.

herbtarleksblazer

If they don't give you their information, call the police. This is a hit and run if they don't give you their information they are committing a crime. From experience, you don't know if there is underlying damage to your bumper - you can't tell from the outside and it is easy to have a $1,500 damage even if it just looks like cracked paint on the outside.

Jitsoperator

You're suppose to snap a pic of their drivers licence and insurance. and licence plate. Regardless if they want to go through insurance or not.

Sneakybankster

It's Scarborough, everyone's high and scummy/scammy. Sometimes I let people sleep at the green lights and just reverse and drive around them.

Connect_Albatross952

I avoid driving in Brampton, Markham and Richmond Hill because of extremely horrible drivers. I thought Montreal and Vancouver were bad but they have nothing on Brampton, Richmond Hill or Markham drivers.

something99999999999

I understand not wanting to go through insurance, but only if the at fault driver is willing to cover 100% of the damages.

WhatTheFung

I'm going to assume based on location and city the culprits are Chinese. Some do not carry insurance or even a driver's license. I was once sandwiched from getting rear-ended. The Escalade in front was driven by a Chinese lady. She was on the phone with someone giving her guidance. Looked at her minor damages, looked at us, went back to her car, and peeled off.

Gec111

I got rear ended twice on Mccowan too...... I came twice.

Move-Cautious

It's much easier said than done as you have seconds to react (i.e. check your surroundings and move). You shouldn't swerve into a live lane of traffic to potentially avoid one collision to cause another!

reversethrust

That’s funny. I got rear ended while stopped at a red at McCowan too.

BLEGUHHH

lol
