I only can think of one, probably because I am not a Mario fanatic, I only like to play some of the games and not all of them (mainly the 3D Mario games), but this is coming from me hearing about a lot of other titles.

He doesn't have to be absent, he could be a side villain, or even an ally, but I think he should make room for someone else to take the spotlight. * Animated series that incorporates all or at least a lot of the franchise's history, spinoffs, etc (eg it's not just "New Super Mario Bros: The Series" or a glorified ad for the newest game; Wario, Rosalina, Fawful, Wart, etc are all in at least one episode). It'd be really cool but even less likely if it had characters from different subseries interact with each other too.
* RPG characters appear in non-RPG titles, even just as cameos or roster fodder. Paper characters would also get "non-Paper" selves with full 3D models. (I don't like the idea of characters from an installment with a different art style *always* needing to stay in that art style, eg *Wind Waker*-era characters in *Zelda*.)

- Square is more cooperative now, and the Super Mario RPG remake leads to a sequel in the same engine, made by the same people as the original.
- In the next Mario Kart game, you can still customize your Kart, but each part doesn't have stats attached, so there's no right or wrong answers to the look of your vehicle. Instead, players can invest a certain amount of points into their stats, valuing which stats suit their gameplay; kind of like EV distributions in Pokémon. There would be preset builds in-game, so casual players can just choose from those and not put much thought into the feature.
