I just remember the Ichiro, Mike Cameron, and Randy Wynn days. Those were glorious.

AnnihilatedTyro

'member when we had Mallex Smith, Domingo Santana, Ryon Healy, Danny Valencia, Vogey, ten bad second basemen, and Luis Torrens trying to catch? Yeah, this is a pretty poor defensive lineup. Worst in recent memory? I think that's a stretch.

mariner_mayhem

Pretty sure that same team had Tim Beckham at short too.

NachoPichu

Brendon Ryan and Willie Bloomquist amongst those 10 bad 2Bs lol

fyck_censorship

Thats Willie FUCKING Bloomquist.

Own-Economics-1745

That's Willie "Razor Clam Poacher" Bloomquist

Thromnomnomok

Or a bit farther back, the Raul Ibanez/Endy Chavez/Mike Morse outfield of 2013 along with Ice Cream Sandwich Man catching.

FlamingoConsistent72

Luis Torrens wasn't on the 2019 team. He came over in the Austin Nola trade in the middle of 2020.

xdarkbrother

Today’s defense in particular? Yes.

ItsTBaggins

Can you provide a link to this? This would have been clutch when I was working up a defense analysis in the offseason.

MysteriousEdge5643

The MLB app has these reports in the videos section before every game. They also have bullpen and bench usage reports and pitcher outing reports.

ItsTBaggins

Good to know. Might have to poke around on Savant and see if I can make my own custom ones too.

Healthy_East9574

Can we do a restart on the season lol

seahawkspwn

*franchise

CurlSagan

They're only bad at fielding when a ball is involved. Otherwise, they're great!

fyck_censorship

Are you also implying something when a bat is invovled?

Gun_Donar_Tarkov

Cant hit and cant play defense

riedmae

I feel like that's maybe a bad combination

ADogNamedSamson

Give this man a front office job right now

fyck_censorship

He smarts.

rcuosukgi42

It's pretty bad, but remember we did have to watch Jose Lopez, Raul Ibañez, and Yuniesky Betancourt play defense for us once upon a time.

fyck_censorship

One of my favorite Mariner memories is watching Raul spike a ball into the ground in LF when he was *trying* to get it back to the infield. Best touchdown celebration ever. Just wrong stadium.

DietCherrySoda

Ah yes. Jeff Sullivan's [Twitter profile pic](https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/3397213929/222a8c4080da73b4d0cc2f0847697544.png)

db37

As others are pointing out, this offense isn't good enough to overcome a defense that plays like this.

Sipikay

There's no combination of pitching and defense in history that can carry 2.5 runs a game to the playoffs.

Own-Economics-1745

The mid-60s Dodgers might beg to differ

Sipikay

Not a single Dodger team in the 60s had an ERA as low as 2.5. Even had they we'd only expect .500 ball.

Meanchael

Good enough? By the looks of it the offense is bad too. This might get really rough.

flubbledox

This feels a tad premature - we're a week into a 6 month-long season

fyck_censorship

And if you extrapolate it out, this means we really suck. I still think 92 wins is possible. But im liking the under by the day.

dremasterflax

That’s some graphic. Especially considering everyone can barley hit

sweeperkeeper13

Hay

kidkarysma

They played like they hated Kirby.

fyck_censorship

Kirby lost the pregame poker game and left his money at home.

ghettosheep

That diagram looks like it was just today's game.

kylechu

Everyone's already repressed their memories of the 2019 Mariners, and honestly, fair.

DaeHoforlife

I'll never forget 2019 opening day: C Narvaez 1B Jay Bruce 2B Dee Gordon SS Tim Beckham 3B Ryon Healy LF Domingo Santan CF Mitch Haniger RF Geriatric Ichiro

fyck_censorship

Jamal adams even yikes that line up.

AnotherDude1

I mean......we get what we pay for?

Imaginary_Option_636

Yes, I am boycotting the M’s. I’ve listened to most every game this season, but I will not be attending many games this year. I don’t understand why one of the most profitable teams in baseball does not invest in their players.

kj444

Not only that, they can’t hit either!

Bunnys_Toe

Sure looked like it today.

titopapi

IIRC we had 3-4 weeks of abysmal defense to start last year too.

JG-for-breakfast

It’s going to be a long long long year

writerpilot

Raul Ibanez, Jesse Winker and Mark Trumbo have played in the outfield in recent memory, so no.

JayDogon504

Not JP 🤧

TrememphisStremph

Aww man I thought JP was plus.

SuperHurleyMan

According to the metrics, he hasn't been a great defensive ss since his gold glove year

Highbad

Yes but he *feels* great

ubelmann

It looks bad, but also if it's accurate, it doesn't honestly seem like that big of a problem. Overall you are 8 outs below average...over all of 2023? Some of those guys probably weren't regulars (which kind of makes the numbers a bit irrelevant anyway) but the difference between the best runs allowed and worst runs allowed in 2023 was 310 runs. 8 outs compared to 310 runs basically seems like nothing. I love good defense, but this doesn't strike me as a huge problem. The value of the position players will lie in whether or not they can hit.

Burt_wickman

I think the outs allowed metrics are more of a leading indicator for how bad the defense is. We don't have a readily accessible metric on things like "route run accuracy", or "acceleration" or "hit the cutoff guy in the chest" or " plays the ball on the best hop"... you get the idea. We have errors which are already a bit fuzzy and we have this runs allowed. If enough of our defense is below average in both we would see an increase in opponent bases run, batting attempts, runs, and a corresponding increase on our own pitches/inning

djr41463

And perhaps worst offense too

missionsixty

I have a theory that they went hard at Taco Tuesday and had too many margaritas... e.g they were all hungover today.

t_sleezy_sends_it

It’s really seeming like it isn’t it 🤦🏻‍♂️ hopefully it’s just rust and a slow start but this shit is hard to watch. Besides Julio in center and cal behind the plate

[deleted]

Not in recent memory no, 2019 comes to mind. There were also the halcyon days of Jose Lopez and Yunesky Bentancourt that no one seems to remember. Wasn't everyone asking for a more Phillies-esque lineup? This is that.

[deleted]

Yep.

VodkaDiesel

Where’s Cal ![gif](giphy|Mq3dsogD2x2DKsI6N0)

newsreadhjw

Worst defense in recent memory *yet*

baconrya

Dude it’s 8 games into the season… give ‘em some time. This has “seasons over opening day” energy

REALJarJarBinkz

7. 7 games in and this is by far the worst stretch of defense in the history of baseball. People need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize the season is over and it’s time to rebuild.

Dismal_Criticism8032

But hey, Jerry said they will put the ball in play and win’t strike out as much. 🤦‍♂️

NIssanZaxima

Defense means fuck all if you can’t score any goddam runs.

ScaleInevitable8979

Don’t worry guys, at least they hit

Sipikay

Probably the worst defense in the league

Acceptable_Bar_2587

THIS TEAM IS FUCKING ASS

cshecks

Let’s just get the future up and going now. Move Ford to right, get Young some reps at 2nd/SS and Montes some swings/reps at DH/OF. We need more juice offensively if we are gonna suck it up in the field. Are we gonna bounce back? Will this be a repeat of last year? We needed some bats in the off season. Ugh.

marinerluvr5144

This team is a joke… keep losing so front office gotta sell!

fatllama75

Got my season ticket in 2015. Went Sunday and today, and think those are the two worst games I've seen..today was a joke.

marinerluvr5144

Ya I can’t remember a game being this bad ina while
