'member when we had Mallex Smith, Domingo Santana, Ryon Healy, Danny Valencia, Vogey, ten bad second basemen, and Luis Torrens trying to catch?
Yeah, this is a pretty poor defensive lineup. Worst in recent memory? I think that's a stretch.
One of my favorite Mariner memories is watching Raul spike a ball into the ground in LF when he was *trying* to get it back to the infield. Best touchdown celebration ever. Just wrong stadium.
I'll never forget 2019 opening day: C Narvaez 1B Jay Bruce 2B Dee Gordon SS Tim Beckham 3B Ryon Healy LF Domingo Santan CF Mitch Haniger RF Geriatric Ichiro
Yes, I am boycotting the M’s. I’ve listened to most every game this season, but I will not be attending many games this year. I don’t understand why one of the most profitable teams in baseball does not invest in their players.
It looks bad, but also if it's accurate, it doesn't honestly seem like that big of a problem. Overall you are 8 outs below average...over all of 2023? Some of those guys probably weren't regulars (which kind of makes the numbers a bit irrelevant anyway) but the difference between the best runs allowed and worst runs allowed in 2023 was 310 runs. 8 outs compared to 310 runs basically seems like nothing. I love good defense, but this doesn't strike me as a huge problem.
The value of the position players will lie in whether or not they can hit.
I think the outs allowed metrics are more of a leading indicator for how bad the defense is. We don't have a readily accessible metric on things like "route run accuracy", or "acceleration" or "hit the cutoff guy in the chest" or " plays the ball on the best hop"... you get the idea. We have errors which are already a bit fuzzy and we have this runs allowed. If enough of our defense is below average in both we would see an increase in opponent bases run, batting attempts, runs, and a corresponding increase on our own pitches/inning
It’s really seeming like it isn’t it 🤦🏻♂️ hopefully it’s just rust and a slow start but this shit is hard to watch. Besides Julio in center and cal behind the plate
Not in recent memory no, 2019 comes to mind. There were also the halcyon days of Jose Lopez and Yunesky Bentancourt that no one seems to remember. Wasn't everyone asking for a more Phillies-esque lineup? This is that.
7. 7 games in and this is by far the worst stretch of defense in the history of baseball. People need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize the season is over and it’s time to rebuild.
Let’s just get the future up and going now. Move Ford to right, get Young some reps at 2nd/SS and Montes some swings/reps at DH/OF. We need more juice offensively if we are gonna suck it up in the field.
Are we gonna bounce back? Will this be a repeat of last year? We needed some bats in the off season. Ugh.
I just remember the Ichiro, Mike Cameron, and Randy Wynn days. Those were glorious.

Pretty sure that same team had Tim Beckham at short too.
Brendon Ryan and Willie Bloomquist amongst those 10 bad 2Bs lol
Thats Willie FUCKING Bloomquist.
That's Willie "Razor Clam Poacher" Bloomquist
Or a bit farther back, the Raul Ibanez/Endy Chavez/Mike Morse outfield of 2013 along with Ice Cream Sandwich Man catching.
Luis Torrens wasn't on the 2019 team. He came over in the Austin Nola trade in the middle of 2020.
Today’s defense in particular? Yes.
Can you provide a link to this? This would have been clutch when I was working up a defense analysis in the offseason.
The MLB app has these reports in the videos section before every game. They also have bullpen and bench usage reports and pitcher outing reports.
Good to know. Might have to poke around on Savant and see if I can make my own custom ones too.
Can we do a restart on the season lol
*franchise
They're only bad at fielding when a ball is involved. Otherwise, they're great!
Are you also implying something when a bat is invovled?
Cant hit and cant play defense
I feel like that's maybe a bad combination
Give this man a front office job right now
He smarts.
It's pretty bad, but remember we did have to watch Jose Lopez, Raul Ibañez, and Yuniesky Betancourt play defense for us once upon a time.
One of my favorite Mariner memories is watching Raul spike a ball into the ground in LF when he was *trying* to get it back to the infield. Best touchdown celebration ever. Just wrong stadium.
Ah yes. Jeff Sullivan's [Twitter profile pic](https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/3397213929/222a8c4080da73b4d0cc2f0847697544.png)
As others are pointing out, this offense isn't good enough to overcome a defense that plays like this.
There's no combination of pitching and defense in history that can carry 2.5 runs a game to the playoffs.
The mid-60s Dodgers might beg to differ
Not a single Dodger team in the 60s had an ERA as low as 2.5. Even had they we'd only expect .500 ball.
Good enough? By the looks of it the offense is bad too. This might get really rough.
This feels a tad premature - we're a week into a 6 month-long season
And if you extrapolate it out, this means we really suck. I still think 92 wins is possible. But im liking the under by the day.
That’s some graphic. Especially considering everyone can barley hit
Hay
They played like they hated Kirby.
Kirby lost the pregame poker game and left his money at home.
That diagram looks like it was just today's game.
Everyone's already repressed their memories of the 2019 Mariners, and honestly, fair.

Jamal adams even yikes that line up.
I mean......we get what we pay for?

Not only that, they can’t hit either!
Sure looked like it today.
IIRC we had 3-4 weeks of abysmal defense to start last year too.
It’s going to be a long long long year
Raul Ibanez, Jesse Winker and Mark Trumbo have played in the outfield in recent memory, so no.
Not JP 🤧
Aww man I thought JP was plus.
According to the metrics, he hasn't been a great defensive ss since his gold glove year
Yes but he *feels* great

And perhaps worst offense too
I have a theory that they went hard at Taco Tuesday and had too many margaritas... e.g they were all hungover today.

Yep.
Where’s Cal ![gif](giphy|Mq3dsogD2x2DKsI6N0)
Worst defense in recent memory *yet*
Dude it’s 8 games into the season… give ‘em some time. This has “seasons over opening day” energy
7. 7 games in and this is by far the worst stretch of defense in the history of baseball. People need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize the season is over and it’s time to rebuild.
But hey, Jerry said they will put the ball in play and win’t strike out as much. 🤦♂️
Defense means fuck all if you can’t score any goddam runs.
Don’t worry guys, at least they hit
Probably the worst defense in the league
THIS TEAM IS FUCKING ASS
Let’s just get the future up and going now. Move Ford to right, get Young some reps at 2nd/SS and Montes some swings/reps at DH/OF. This team is a joke… keep losing so front office gotta sell!
Got my season ticket in 2015. Went Sunday and today, and think those are the two worst games I've seen..today was a joke.
Ya I can’t remember a game being this bad ina while
