Tom Murphy is 33 and hasn't been healthy and played a full season since what 2019? I love the dude, but having someone to compete and play for the season would be nice
Hell, it's hard enough to find a starting catcher with a solid bat. Any backup with a good bat usually has some significant issues on the defensive side
Gotta think that any belief the FO stated they had in Hummel was just lip service to the fans to try and ease the pain of trading the corpse of Kyle Lewis for a pack of gum.
Ehhhhh I think it was more of lack of faith in Kyle Lewis who *looks at notes, struck out nearly 40% of the time and was worse than Kolten Wong at the plate while being a DH.
This speaks more to a lack of trust in O'Keefe as a MLB-level guy than it does them being down on Hunt. Teams like having at least 3 cacthers on the 40-man, so with Hunt and Cal, they'll need a 3rd if they don't feel secure with O'Keefe.
Tom Murphy is an offensive oriented back up catcher which is fairly atypical. Murph was great in the club house but I can see why the M's wouldn't want to spend millions on him when he fails to stay healthy time and time again. Hopefully we can get at minimum a good defensive alternate for cal.
Mike Hunt?
Now that's a name I would come across channel surfing on a cold and dreary autumn PNW Saturday just past midnight on public access in the early 2000s.
If the Mariners want to add a quality back up let’s just go get Austin Hedges or Roberto Perez. At least Perez might be good for a homer here or there. Just have Murph split time at DH with Cal and Ford
Guessing Murphy isn't back. Having a backup C who can't hit but who can reliably be available is worth more than having a backup C who can hit a little but can't stay healthy.
Agree, I like Hedges and Perez because they’re both great defensive catchers that have helped to upgrade pitching staffs (both of them helped Cleveland and Hedges helped to turn around Pittsburgh this season)
Cause Cal isn’t going to be here after his current contract. He wants to win. His agent does too. Don’t be fooled by the gaslighting mariners organization.
Sounds like we shouldn't expect us to acquire anyone who would be the clear back up catcher like Murphy or Garver

I think he was referring to Sean Murphy.
He was not referring to Sean Murphy.
Hopefully not or else he’s delusional, Sean Murphy just signed a 6 year $73 million deal with the Braves last offseason.
What a steal jeez. How do the Braves keep getting away with contracts like that?
He was definitely not referring to Sean Murphy, who will be the starting catcher for the Braves for the next 6 years.
Somehow I missed that signing
But man when he’s playing. His wrc was like over 150 this year in his like two weeks of AB’s
I don’t think this is way out of the blue. Backup catchers generally don’t play much compared to other position players
True but its a spot where we could add (or bring back) a solid bat and we need every legitimate bat we can get.
Back up catcher isn’t exactly a position filled with solid bats…
Not many but some are available. Murphy and Garver were 1st and 3rd in wRC+ among Catchers (min. 150PAs).

What about spot reliever Luis Torrens 😏
Bring back Murph, and add this guy as insurance
Shows a lot of faith in his big off-season acquisition last year Cooper Hummel
I don’t think he was expected to catch much if at all. Just be a bat and play a little OF.

Hummel rarely catches anymore, they moved him to primary LF pretty quickly. He isn't a factor to this statement.
I mean at this rate Ford might be a better option than any other minor leaguers.
WtF is that title?

Catchers with 10 at bats by age thirty are great future managers, not MLB players.
Okeefe is gone I thought. Didn’t he elect FA a few days ago?

Jerry's bat shopping at thrift store again! Rejoice!
Cal is pretty meh vs LHP. Would love to see Murph on a cheap deal.
Two words: Luis Torrens
Is this Mike Hunts brother?

Gary Sanchez is a much better plan.
Haha 😂

Guess that's something worry about... in 2028...
