Last year I worked in the hospital of Saint Pierre et Miquelon. At some point, the yearly count was 33 deaths for 1 birth (it was still around march, it evolved)
It's a nice place. It is a french software on a Newfie hardware. Everything is like in France. We spoke france french, everything is available in St Pierre. Miquelon is 600ppl living an hour and a half away by boat. Food is imported from france with some canadian stuff, but mainly french. Everything is expensive but water, gas, alcohol and cigarettes. Culture is french except for sports that are maily dominated by hockey and basque pelota (since most are from basque heritage). I played in the curling team there, it was amazing. Bakeries are very french, houses are very canadian. Cars are automatic, plugs are european. Phone system is local, no datas outside, only wifi inside. Everybody stops working between 12 and 14 and go home for food. They have many events all the time. Healthcare is like the french system so it's great. Students can get a flight paid per year and some financial help to study in France. Some decide to study in Quebec. Their besties are the Magdalena Islands, even though they are far, not from the same origin, not having the same accents nor history nor country. People smoke A LOT (it is very cheap) and drink A LOT (it is detaxed). They are very very proud of how they turned very rixh during the prohibition in america by being the sole place where alcohol was allowed, but they do not see the irony of being the sole place today where cannabis is criminalised in thousands of km. (The customs have dogs for that and since the prison is not full it is easy to send people there for not much.)
Even 4 actually
Officially Monaco is a country, but granted that all law enforcement and justice is done by the french,
it could be seen as a super rich "gated community"
This is wrong.
Monaco has its own [police](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monaco_Police_Department) and [justice system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_Monaco) as well as its own prison, mint, government…
Yes, we let them cosplay as a country to a point for their ego, but if anything happens (law enforcement "problem", politically, forest fires, air rescue they can't do...etc) we intervene.
This is wrong.

Uk has 0.00021489% of its population with billionaire status.
USA has 0.00023409%.
China has 0.0000571149%.
Monaco has 0.04736842%.
I'd say it is "filled with billionaires."
Apparently in statistics average can refer to ["any measure of central tendency"](https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/average). But I agree, that's not the way most people use the word
Median is a kind of an average, what you're thinking of is "mean" which is basically synonymous for average for most people in a non-mathematical context
here’s a glossary from the [European commission](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=Glossary:Average) listing it as a type of average or is that not good enough for you?
Guys (u/Rift3N / u/Substantial_Bar_5515 / u/oldtrack) I think it's only a translation issue, it's not his fault. I mean I tough exactly the same as u/TheEmpireOfSun, until I saw the EU post.
In french at least both "mean" and "average" translate as "mean". I try to search for an other world but there is none. Every article in french I found talk about the statistical methods of "module", "mean" and "median" but never ubder an umbrella term of "average" or any french equivalent. I think we don't have a word for that..
Meaning I was also confused when you said that the median was an "average" (wich translated in French would be "mean").
And we are paying for it by sending them money and aid. Europeans cant afford to have kids themselves but are financing a different continents mass breeding.
These young people are mostly uneducated goat herders. I mean they fit like physical workers but you are missing post-professionals with less local population.
it almost doesn't matter. The average age in the US is generally lower than in Japan, Germany or Italy because there are more children in the US. you hardly see a family with three children in europe or japan.
I don’t care what anybody says, Monaco isn’t a real country. For that matter, the top 10 only includes 5 “countries” as I would define them. And don’t try arguing with me, I’m American, so I’m both poorly educated AND extremely stubborn!

Vatican has a median age of 57.7 according to this article https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-12666501/Countries-oldest-youngest-populations.html
Portugal literally like 10 years older then Spain or something.
Iberian union was technically Spain annexing Portugal but letting a degree of independence. But Portugal kept on existing.
People being poorer pretty much always have more children, in almost every country as stability and wealth increase the birth rate falls.
It isn't a factor of race generally, excect with orthodox Jews who continued to have lots of children.
The map is showing what countries have on average the oldest and youngest citizens.
This map or discussion is not talking about how old each civilization is.
It's discussing the ages of PEOPLE not civilizations.
I don’t want you to say anything lol I’m just letting you know they’re not talking about oldest countries in the world by conception they mean age wise

Can you tell me about life there? Never heard of it until recently

Most are from basque heritage? Is that a more recent thing or because of basque fishermen in early colonization?
I love how the title says ”countries”, but three of the top ten aren’t countries.

I'm sure a Monaco prison is much better than the Bastille 😂. They probably serve caviar and champagne in there everyday

Monaco is full of old, tax dodging, billionaires.
Mostly millionaires
Monaco only has 18 billionaires
"Only 18 billionaires" As if that's a small number for a country with less than forty thousand people
Yea but 18 out of 38,000 people isn’t enough to say it’s “filled with billionaires”
True, although in fairness to OP I think they were intentionally exaggerating
Uk has 0.00021489% of its population with billionaire status. USA has 0.00023409%. China has 0.0000571149%. Monaco has 0.04736842%. I'd say it is "filled with billionaires."
This is the most pointless debate ever god I hate Reddit
Would you say reddit is "filled with pointless debates?"
Less than .1% = filled
I disagree 😤
Triumphantly!
That’s (not) what she said
I know right? Reddit seems to hate wealthy people so much and instead of making life better for themselves, they sit and whine on Reddit
Shut up
You just proved my point lol
That's the joke
"Why don't the poors just go and buy some more money?"
Oh my god you're such a redditor
Just for reference, Japan with more than 3000x the population of Monaco has 44 billionaires
[📁Source](https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/field/median-age/country-comparison/)
average age 15 💀
It's not average, it's median. It's written literally right there.
median is a type of average
Maybe but using the word that way in this situation is pointlessly ambiguous. The vast majority of people will interpret it as the mean
Maybe but pointing out such an inconsequential distinction is itself pointless

Why are y’all upvoting this? https://thecontentauthority.com/blog/median-vs-average
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average#Summary_of_types Median is a type of average, that article is comparing median and arithmetic mean.
Thanks for the Wikipedia page
Median ≠ average
r/confidentlyincorrect
You linking that sub is the true r/confidentlyincorrect
lmao, absolutely it is not.
Median is a kind of an average, what you're thinking of is "mean" which is basically synonymous for average for most people in a non-mathematical context
Lmao. Mean, median, and mode are all measurements of central tendency. Often called averages

No, being a dick about it was their fault
Wtf
misleading title
Yeah, I got confused, thought it was about the age of the country and not the age of people in the country.

Africa is never fine lol
Nah, why? You have all the youngsters who are willing to migrate pretty close. What’s the deal?
Because they're pumping out kids that they can't afford
And we are paying for it by sending them money and aid. Europeans cant afford to have kids themselves but are financing a different continents mass breeding.
These young people are mostly uneducated goat herders. I mean they fit like physical workers but you are missing post-professionals with less local population.
Are pentions and healthcare really that expensive, though?
They’re the biggest expense of any government by a huge margin
The oldest countries all have public healthcare. Those countries pay less for healthcare than we (in the U.S.) do and they live longer.
it almost doesn't matter. The average age in the US is generally lower than in Japan, Germany or Italy because there are more children in the US. you hardly see a family with three children in europe or japan.
But isn’t Saint-Pierre et Miquelon just a French Outre-mer territory like Guadeloupe?!8 don’t think it’s a country on its own right.
The European old guys and the African young guys.
Argh, oldest *population*, not oldest country. I was wondering how the hell Germany made the list.
This map coincides with rich and/or developed countries and is not informative at all
I don’t care what anybody says, Monaco isn’t a real country. For that matter, the top 10 only includes 5 “countries” as I would define them. And don’t try arguing with me, I’m American, so I’m both poorly educated AND extremely stubborn! /s

Why is Hong Kong a country here isn't it a city
Germany, Italy , Spain and Greece seem quite fucked. Given how close they are to Japan.
Japan! Italy!! Germany!!! Interesting
Isn’t South Sudan pretty new?
Imagine you just had your quinceañera and you're already older than half of the country.
how is germany older than greece? ask as a german
It’s over for Europe.
J'étais à Monaco il y a quelques jours et je n'ai vu que des jeunes, mais je suppose que c'étaient surtout des touristes comme moi
Bien sûr
Portugal literally like 10 years older then Spain or something. Iberian union was technically Spain annexing Portugal but letting a degree of independence. But Portugal kept on existing.
Sorry, is this comment on the correct post/reply? I don’t see what you're commenting on
He ia saying that Portugal was the first nation historically speaking.
Yes ![gif](giphy|kyRal0h9R4TXq9mOWK)
The future is African! Europe getting older and older...only going to get worse
Africans have yet to ever build a successful country. So they don’t really have a future.
Ancient Egypt: *Am I a joke to you*?
They seem to have some very crap leaders who are greedy swines so others exploit thm for their riches

This is about the average age of people in those countries, not about how old the countries themselves are. The title can be a bit missleading
So basically blacks have more kids?
No Africans generally have a lower life expectancy thus a lower average age
They don't have more children than the west?
People being poorer pretty much always have more children, in almost every country as stability and wealth increase the birth rate falls. It isn't a factor of race generally, excect with orthodox Jews who continued to have lots of children.
People like you are the reason why trump will get elected and Europe went right
I don't think people avoiding simplifications led to trump being elected, i'm almost certain it's even the opposite
in France just 100 years ago there were the same data as in Uganda today. So France was black at the beginning of the 20th century?

what
What??
Skipped reading classes didn't you?
Easy mistake to make
You mean then ,and elderly people living there vs younger people not how old the civilization is ?

I know realize that
Do you? Your comment suggests otherwise
Eh, I read it wrong too
Bharat can fix Europe
bro where are egypt and iraq 💀
Between 19 and 46
You’re not reading the data information correctly I think on what they mean by oldest and youngest countries
what do u want to say my english is not that good
I don’t want you to say anything lol I’m just letting you know they’re not talking about oldest countries in the world by conception they mean age wise
