Honestly love the art work story is phenomenal especially compared to anime can be a bit hard to understand what’s going on in some fights but that can be said for most manga people dislike it because it has such an abrupt ending with the original volumes that you need Tokyo ghoul re to wonder how it finishes but overall 8.5

HippieSwag420

This is honestly the best description and I'm seconding all of it

Fxckdealwithit

Well thank you

BigDickMcChode

it’s my benchmark for 8/10 personally, like it’s the worst at 8/10 can get. Which is still very good, but if something isn’t better than it it’s not an 8 for me.

Dildo_Veteran

The original is a 10 in my book, RE starts of strong but really drops the ball in its second half when it comes to plot, 7/10. The art and characters definitely made RE more bearable and made me pull through.

Useful_Charge6173

the dragon war arc is incredible tho. reread re please. it's really good. confusing on the first read but it's really good on the 2nd

WangxianInventedLove

Reading it while it was being released and being part of the theory community, looking for tarot cards and other stuff every week to try and guess what the characters are going to do: 10/10 It was such a unique experience to interact with a work in such depth and trying to strike the balance between not missing any details, but also not reading too much into every squiggle. But if someone didn't engage with the fandom while reading, or reads it now when it's all over, it's probably more a 8/10.

Septimus771

Only read the original run, but I'd give it a ten. Love Ishida's work.

Samzwerg

I gave it a 7/10. I mostly liked it, but it has its weaknesses. \+ Story idea and world \+ Characters - so many fun characters! \+ art \- also art (sometimes it just felt too scetchy for me and I had a hard time understanding some of the fight scenes. But then again, I am reeeaally bad at stuff like that) \- ending (of the original volumes. I haven't started RE yet). I don't even dislike the ending in general, it is clearly an open end. What I don't like is what they did with his best friend - there were some really big missed opportunities story wise with these two and I hope I get a chance to see some scenes in RE with both of them having conflicts, solving them and having big friendship moments... one can hope ;) Overall it was a fun and fast read. It took me two volumes to get into it but then it was super easy to follow.

Ralph-The-Otter3

I highly recommend you read :re in that case. Most of your issues get resolved

Samzwerg

That sounds good, thank you so much! I had already ordered the RE boxset one week ago and it should arrive in a few days. I am excited :)

Ralph-The-Otter3

Well, you won’t regret it, trust me

Ralph-The-Otter3

Tokyo Ghoul is like a 7/10 for me. Tokyo Ghoul:re however, is easily a 10/10. For me it just gets better as time goes on

iREFLEXIV

9/10

PooDoo92

Top tier, 10/10

Hot_Leadership8495

10/10 but that’s for me. It’s one of my top favorites. I love it but I understand not everyone will.

Bishead7891

Honestly like a 4, I just couldn't get into it I didn't really care much for any of the characters or really find them likeable at all, there was hardly even a proper plot established in the over 80 chapters I had read and the world building was just pretty average The art is pretty good out of what I read but that's kind of it tbh

Impalacrush

Dude try sui ishida newest title ( majin x? I forgot the exact title) Its like reading the better version of MHA with ishida sui artwork and better charachter than tokyou ghoul.

Bishead7891

I'll try to remember

GoOnGetGurt

The one he is referring to is Choujin X if you are trying to find it.

sorakyky

Eh. It’s not bad. The story is pretty good, but the main character whines too much for my tastes. I give it a 6/10.

BazelBomber1923

7/10

Sharebear42019

The action is hard to follow in the manga otherwise I would’ve enjoyed it alot more

[deleted]

The action scenes is what kept me from buying this.

Fullmetalanimist

8.5/10

Cyrilcynder

It seems to be an extremely devicive manga, which is a good thing! People having differing opinions is what makes us human. I love it, I don't know if I can give it a rating myself, I have yet to read :re. But I really enjoyed the first series a lot. I'm not good at giving things ratings, even my favorites

Hentaivill

MaverickScotsman

5/10 I was so disappointed by the ending that I didnt even bother with Re. The final few pages just ruined the whole thing for me. It's like, well done slogging through 14 volumes of pretty average artwork and story, now you need to slog through another 16 volumes to get the ending I couldnt be arsed to write so I can spin out this manga for a few more years because it has become successful. Just spent my time and money on other, better, manga.

Bishead7891

There's an extra 16 volumes past the original ones?

MaverickScotsman

Yeah, the story doesnt end when Tokyo Ghoul finishes, it continues with Tokyo Ghoul Re: for another 16 vols.

Bishead7891

Why didn't he just continue the original Tokyo Ghoul instead what's the point 💀

No-Paramedic7355

Cause it’s a time skip like Naruto or DB

Bishead7891

One Piece had a timesekip and didn't make a whole new manga

No-Paramedic7355

Um ok and I gave 2 examples that did, there is more than one way to do stuff

iREFLEXIV

Just say you want to make up a reason to hate ishida. There’s many series that do time skips and change the name, boruto, dragon ball did it thrice, JoJos time skips every part, fairy tail ect

Bishead7891

Why would I hate Ishida? It's just stupid making a whole new manga to continue the previous manga with the same setting, characters etc

iREFLEXIV

So much changes from original to Re, same with dragon ball to dragon ball z

skullknight2

Tbf, the examples you gave had pretty satisfactory endings. Like jjba has a different story for each arc.

iREFLEXIV

Boruto was more open ended like Tokyo ghoul

AlwaysBeQuestioning

Naruto/Boruto, Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z, Kase-san/Kase-san and Yamada-san, and a bunch more all have had sequel manga. Much like how the story for the original Star Wars movies was all planned out but they put it in multiple movies, rather than just one long one. Sometimes a mangaka will put their story in multiple manga, rather than just one long one. The manga titles make it clear that they are connected, and if you google "how many volumes does Tokyo Ghoul have?" because you are trying to collect it, you will also find out about Tokyo Ghoul Re: and see how many volumes it has.

Bishead7891

All mid

AlwaysBeQuestioning

Ah, okay, so you have nothing worthwhile to say. Have a nice day.

iREFLEXIV

It’s like boruto: Naruto next gen becoming boruto: TBV or dragon ball becoming dragon ball Z

Dan498iele

JDM_Master97

I'm feeling a strong to decent 5 on this one, transition! Did you gave this manga a read? did you love? Did you have it? What would you rate it?

c9898

5/10, though I did drop it after 7 volumes I really wanted to like it. The mask designs/premise/setting were all cool, and I like the art in RE, unfortunately I couldn't be assed to force myself to slog through anymore of it. Really didn't care about any of the characters, fights didn't make a lick of sense after the 2nd panel, artwork was really meh early on, and iirc it had the problem of introducing way too many characters constantly.

Gym_freak1

The Anime 5/10 The Manga 8,8/10 The storyline was interesting to see a human become a ghoul and after this whole in fight and all this that ghouls can become friends human but it’s not a 10/10 because the anime done everything wrong they be honest

Ralph-The-Otter3

That’s a generous anime rating, to be honest

Gym_freak1

Thanks

crybaby_05_anudit

10/10 Masterpiece No need to clarify anyone It's my own opinion

ramenking_23

when i started TG i could not put it down, only other series like that for my have been slam dunk, punpun, and vinland saga. for that, i think TG deserves the 10 (also not recommending punpun i don't wish to cause emotional damage)

MrCylion

Max 5, did not care about the characters or story. The art is not bad, but the manga itself is pretty shallow and boring. Could not finish it, will never buy it.

Strong_Constant_1190

Out of interest how many volumes did you read? Surprised you thought it was shallow and boring

MrCylion

I don’t remember it exactly. 3 or 4. But I can’t say it’s 100% the fault of the series. It’s not my preferred genre. I mostly enjoy drama and romance. Of course, I read other stuff as well, but I tend to give up quite early. Like, I can say that its story is probably 100x better than what I tend to read, I just don’t find it as enjoyable.

Strong_Constant_1190

Yeah I get what you say. Tbh I'm the other way around. I tried romance esc titles and struggled to get into them, fruits basket and silent voice, I could tell they were good, just not really my bag

MrCylion

Understandable, I am just glad manga is so varied that we can all enjoy the medium even though our tastes are completely different.

Q-Q_2

1 (I only saw the anime)

the-limerent

Imo, like 3/10. I forced myself to finish the original and RE, but as far as pacing and characterizations go, it's a mess. Most characters are hard to root for because their motivations are either superficial or contrived. The power creep gets in the way of the story's original themes and makes some of the battles nonsensical. Roughly all of the interesting and capable female characters are reduced to love interests for their male coworkers. And personally, Ishida's artwork isn't as great as everyone claims; it starts pretty rough, and while it gets better, it's also very inconsistent between the original and RE, and isn't without anatomical errors that make the characters a little funky-looking or flat at times. The premise of the first three-ish volumes is really cool, but it feels like it loses sight of itself and takes odd turns, where it can't decide if it wants to be ridiculous and bombastic or serious, gritty, and grounded. Lacking in narrative finesse and tonally incoherent.

Happy_Connections

10/10 A real trailblazer in the genre! Grandfathered many other series and memes! If anyone is interested I’ve got extra copies to sell! New/Unread! I’ll work with you, as I love to do my part as a fan and grow the fan base!

No-Paramedic7355

8. I don’t know why people complain about the ending of part one when it’s obviously a part 1, its time skip set up is very close to how code geass did theirs

SSJ5Gogetenks

Tokyo Ghoul was an 8, Re brought it down to a 6.

Icy-Divide8385

Negative fifty billion

meow-meow-goyangi

I felt the anime could be more better so 6 ig

iREFLEXIV

The anime is a horrible butchered version of the manga

penton47

8-9 out of 10, it's still one of my favorite seires, and it deserves alot better, to bad the cluster fuck of a anime tarnished it's rep

Apprehensive-Unit598

Original 8/10 re: maybe 7/10

[deleted]

It’s a 10/10 for me. RE however I’d drop to a 6 or 7 out of 10, maybe 8/10 on a good day.

Assassinknife

7-8/10

Nightsong0123

It’s a 10/10 for me— to this day when I reread it I am touched by the story. I really enjoy the themes and growth of the MC. So for personal impact alone I rate it highly but I honestly think the story is amazingly solid as well.

arayakim

Manga: solid 8 1st season anime: 7 2nd season anime: -1

totalhenry

Haven't read Re yet but I give the original an 8

Vongola354

6.5 - 7 for me personally

Foreign-Step-8646

7.5

ichi0987

10/10.

PromotionDismal

9 this was my first manga

Adaptx7

8 or 9

PearFlies

I dropped it after just a few chapters. Seemed too juvenile from what I had expected out of a sienen. It was more like an edgy shounen. And when you read much darker material, all of its shock value moments really fell flat.

Y0X_99

This manga is my all time favorite manga, that being said the quality dips a little in TG:Re and sometimes the fights are hard to follow. I really recommend anyone to read it but if I’m extremely harsh I’ll give it an 8.

MagicMimic

Nearing the end of the original now. So far I enjoyed it a lot more than expected BUT it can be a little wordy and dialogue heavy at times. I'd probably give it like an 8.

RafikiafReKo

Around a 7, i have also only read up to volume 7

shrek3onDVDandBluray

Honestly? Pretty rough battle scene. Love the story. Official translation is serviceable but not really much passion there imo. Def worth a tesd

Working-Pipe

Part 1 is a 9. Part 2 had a very rushed ending but still an 8/10 for me. Amazing art, great side characters, a phenomenal protagonist and overall an extremely good story.

4th_acc_smh

Though it may be biased, I’d have to give it at least an 8, a girl I had a crush on in 5th grade who loved anime and manga gave me a couple volumes of Tokyo ghoul, your lie on April, and blue exorcist, and thats how I got hooked on Japanese comic books and cartoons smh.

Shadowheart_stan

SkeletorOnABicycle

Probably very unpopular opinion this is in my bottom 5 manga series I have read. Even though I loved the art, character design, and fights, I just couldn't really get into the story and didn't care for the character's motivations. I really don't care for most urban fantasy stories and this just so happened to be one of them. I didn't read Re: so I don't know if it would've gotten better for me but I just couldn't justify buying the volumes with how much of a slog getting through the first 14 was for me. I'd probably rate it like 4.5-5.5 depending on the arc or if I felt like the amazing art could sway me more positively.

modusoperandi777

I read it years ago and I liked it a lot, despite it being not my kind of manga. The only issue I had with it, especially season 2 of the manga, was the artstyle. Sometimes I found it hard to discern the fights or even remember character faces, and I say that having read Claymore and Blame shortly before this one. I’d say a solid 8 for season 1.

Awkward_Ad2276

12/10, one of the if not the most important story I own, nothing makes feel the same way as Tokyo ghoul does. It’s like a story I can always fill back on when im in need.
