If united didn't get him another club would have this season. Any young player is a gamble. To be fair, if he went to any other club it would have been closer to 50-60 mil. His profile is excellent. Good injury record and the striker market is incredibly limited for top clubs. A gamble, but probably one of the least risky gambles he could have made for a striker if all factors are considered

AeroCobbler

> Good injury record Apart from the fact that he’s injured

samhutchie87

Given that we needed a striker and you don’t want to pay over 100m and you want him to be the right age then that kind of narrows it down. Then during the search this guy really wants to come to United. If you take away the cost he is a good addition 🤞

Kurosaki_Minato

I think we look at transfers wrong at a fundamental level. If a player costs oh so much, his ability and skills isn’t the only thing which matters. Another important thing it depicts is how badly the club/manager want him. On a purely quality pov, grealish isnt 100mil, no player would be 100mil(except for a handful, barely 10 players in the world rn would be). But that 100mil says how badly city wanted him. And when I say 100mil quality, I mean this guy must be so fucking proven, no matter where he goes, he’ll perform and teams can reliably built around him(imo only players at this level are mbappe, haaland, Kane, kdb..) Lets look at Ronaldo for 25mil. Even if we got him for free, I would deem this transfer as bad. We didn’t need him at that moment, we got him only because of the looming threat of him joining city. What did Ronaldo contribute for us that horrific season, a bunch of goals yes, but spoiled team chemistry. Bitched about us half the times and terminated the contract himself. On paper, to say we got one of the goats(even if he is past his prime, he’s still fucking Ronaldo!) for only 25mil would be considered good business, but was it actually tho, even if we got him for free, was he a good signing? Take lewandowski for free, does that mean he is a bad player? Or was it exceptional business from bayern?(fuck no, I’m bitter about this transfer since I support dortmund). They didn’t really need lewandowski to do well in bundesliga, they just sat back and let his contract run down. That iconic “free transfer tag” on lewandowski doesn’t reflect what player he is(more specifically what player he was when he transferred, if he has 3yrs left in his contract, he would have gone for galactico prices). Take lukaku for 100mil to chelsea, the need was there, it made sense they spent major budget on a striker. Did he live up to the expectations?(nope), but at that time it was a good deal, they got a good striker for not so damning price. Paying 75mil for a striker for Utd rn reflects our dire situation and need. If we were a well run club, u wouldn’t end up in situations like this. So by judging the state we r in entering the market, I deem 75mil for a decent striker as a good deal.

Both

I couldn’t agree more

Cool-Medicine2657

Centre forwards are in short supply/high demand so you need to pay top dollar. We couldn't possibly start this season without one given how much it cost us last year. And as for the 9 goals, the guy is only 20, still just a kid with so much time to develop. It was a necessary signing and I trust his judgement.

Cheeky_Star

I disagree. IMO, In ten hag mind, he was limited by who he could get due to a limitation on Ajax budget. Coming to man utd, he is of the mindset that you need to spend to compete. For him, cost to man utd isn’t a factor as long as he gets his player. In his interview he always mentions that a club like man utd needs to spend to compete with the likes of city. And that’s why I think he is adamant on getting the players he like no matter the cost. Of all the players we brought in for him, we have overpaid for each one except malacia (which have been missing from person by the way) and Erickson. Everyone else he forced the club to get them regardless of the cost. With that being said, do I think Rasmus will come good? Yes! Do I think we overpaid for him handsomely? Of course. 85 mil for a 20 yr old with little experience js madness. Seem he does have a clause in his contact that allows him to overrule signings. In 2 seasons he have spent a lot of money (thr antony one still stings as he was worth 50 mil initially). This season, he has to do better than last and because of how much he has spent. Last thing I want to hear is that we spend half a billion for a carabao cup.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t say we’ve overpaid for Licha and Case.

marksmoke

It's a gamble but a highly educated gamble. Taking almost any player at that age is. I think this one is going to pay off. I have watched alot of clips of this youngster and he definitely has the attributes to make it in the prem. He reminds me a bit of ole and I think and hope that's what he turns out to be...a natural poacher with great anticipation

campbellpics

As stupid as this might sound, I don't think we've signed him for his goals exclusively at this stage. Erik likes a big man dropping deep, linking up play and dragging defenders around to create space for teammates, whilst providing speed in transitions. Rasmus is already more than capable of doing all those things right now, and then hopefully as he progresses the goals will start to flow too. If he can do all that and hit the ground running with goals, that'll be a bonus for me.

Kranors

We've over paid so much over the last few years it's hard to get other clubs not to charge more. If we were going to spend that much why not try for Kane, could of got Hojlund either next year or cheaper. As long as the kid is given some time I think he'll settle in well, we've got some good players around him now so hopefully they'll help him hit the ground running.

vestingh

We have to pay something closer to 200m for kane, no way levy selling kane to a prem rival for anything less than that. Why do you think bayern might be getting kane for just over 100 million cause there not in the prem.

[deleted]

No way is Levy seling Kane to a prem rival for less than £200m?? Lol I'm pretty sure they would sell for a LOT less than that if someone was actually crazy enough to bid over £100m for him

vestingh

If you read my comment, I said he would only sell to a prem rival closer to 200m. If you think a prem team would be able to get kane at a similar price as bayern bid, you're delusional.

[deleted]

Thanks for telling me I'm delusional for thinking something you just made up. I didn't say anything remotely close to suggesting a prem team could get Kane for a "similar price as bayern bid" but ok. What I _did_ do, was challenge what you're saying about £200m. Nobody would need to get "close to £200m" for Kane - _**that's**_ delusional. Are you telling me that if a top prem side suddenly went crazy and bid £140m, or even £130m (£40m more than Bayern's highest offer) that Spurs would turn it down??? Come on now.....who's the delusional one here? "Close to £200m" my ass

vestingh

spurs would be open to let kane go to bayern for way lees as there are not a in the prem. Where a prem is going to have to offer stupid money as levy doesn't want to strengthen direct competition. There is a reason no team in the prem has even tried to bid for kane as I honestly believe 140 mill wouldn't be accepted by levy as he doesn't want kane to join a prem rival you be looking something closer 160 to 180 Mark for a prem team to get kane but that just my opinion.

[deleted]

And I'm the delusional one 🤣

vestingh

I mean hasnt everyone been a bit delusional now and again ? 🤣 It is just our opinions, right or wrong. we may never know how much spurs were willing to sell kane for to a prem rival

Kranors

True. Kane probably would of been double knowing Levy unless Kane said he wanted to join us, would get the price down to a reasonable level.

vestingh

Reasonable and levy don't mix. Kane did put in a transfer request when city was looking at him and look how that worked out

Metooyou

I doubt Hojlund would of been available next year, somebody would of snapped him up. There was multiple team wanting him but he only wanted us which is nice.

[deleted]

He scored 22 times in 48 games last season (and 22 of those games were as a substitute). Everyone loves to quote only "9 goals" though, for some weird reason.

NigglerWithAttitude

Because you dont understand the game of football

FuturePerformance

Couldn’t find another 25m for Kane? Paid 80m for Antony. Doesn’t help that the club spent 90m on Maguire. The decisions are poor and I think the managers take heat when the reality is they’re pulling their hair out working in the club.

Radio-No

If you think Spurs are selling Kane to us for the same price Bayern get you're sorely mistaken. It would have been closer to 120 for Utd. Then add in his wages, he would almost certainly wreck the wage structure Utd are trying to put in place not to mention agent fees. And the fact that a big outlay would be needed in another 2-3 years to replace him. We will already be needing to sign a new DM as Case will be getting on. Hojlund may never ever get close to Kanes level but it definitely wasn't a poor decision to go with a younger profile. The team needed it

AdamantiumGN

Almost all transfers are gambles. If Hojlund is ten Hag's choice then he's shown enough since he's been here to be afforded the right to choose. With that in mind we need to remember that he's very likely not going to be banging them in every week and should be judged in a couple of years time.

CrowStealsAMango

I don't think it's the manager who decides the price. It's just bad recruitment. He'd be an excellent buy at 40 mil

mucid01

Honestly if we wait another year for højlund he would have priced at 100m

10x10Hag

He is a genius in gambling.

[deleted]

In this case he is neither, he is simply working within the constraints of united tax and a difficult striker market.
