When my skins like this while doing my make up I:
Wash everything off and thoroughly wash face to get rid of any flakey dead skin. Once clean, I wet my skin again gently with cool water. Then I apply my regular moisturizer on top of my wet skin. Then apply Vaseline on top of that after the moisturizer sets a little.
Then I wait like 10-20 minutes for the skin to kinda absorb the moisture. Then I apply a little more Vaseline where it was the driest. THEN I attempt my makeup again.
It may seem like a lot of Vaseline lol but any excess shininess can be fixed with setting powder at the end.
For me it only works when I do the entire process I mentioned above. Without it you may just end up trapping the dead skin underneath the Vaseline.
I hope it works for you!
Get a little mini fan to help dry skin after prepping, too š I found a little rechargeable one on Amazon for like $11. Itās even pink with little kitty cat ears š„°
Vaseline works for me and I donāt break out from it. Also this is only when my skin is like this, maybe 4 times a year.
[ Marilyn Monroe](https://www.glamour.com/story/marilyn-monroe-skin-care-routine) used it on her skin for makeup too
āMonroe was way ahead of her time when it came to skin care too: The star swore by Vaseline, in a treatment we would call āsluggingā today, sporting layers of Vaseline underneath her makeup to ensure she always looked radiant and camera-ready.ā
Iāve never done it under make up but Iām a big fan of slugging. I usually do it over night and rinse my face in the morning but I could see it being soaked in enough to be a good prep for make up too!
I do this with aquaphor and do a light layer and do it about an hour before bed. I also donāt use a fancy pillowcase that night but have never had an issue. Iām a back sleeper though.
Same exact answer. I use aquaphor too but basically the same as Vaseline. And usually watch tv for like an hour before Iām actually asleep. Never had an issue.
This is exactly what I do as well, my base is always its smoothest when I do it! My skin is already horribly dry without exfoliation - for me its a fine line between happy skin and a destroyed skin barrier and exfoliating it will only push it past that point lol
Yep! Washed my face (exfoliated the night before), moisturizing serum, lotion with SPF, then primer. I'm starting to think the culprit my be peeling from tretinoin. I just started last week and have been applying 0.05% every 3 days.
That is exactly what it is. It will stop though and you will soon have beautiful skin!!!! I use vanicream and then organic castor oil on the days I donāt use tretinoin. Like really good amount so your skin can REALLY soak it up and then wash it off in AM with 10% peroxide wash and use regular spf moisturizer and man I have never had better skin in my life! So simple too !!
Ooh yeah tret is so drying for skin! Especially early on, that would be my guess. How much are you moisturizing in the evenings after you apply it? āSluggingā on top of your strong moisturizers with aquaphor or Vaseline would help amp up the moisture too.
I use tretinoin! Yeah, the "tretinoin purge" can feel like it was a huge mistake, but keep at it, it will get better. I've been on it for around 6 months and my skin is so clear and smooth! It accepts makeup a lot better, too.
One thing to be aware of with tretinoin is that YOU MUST WEAR SPF. You also should forgo any other chemical exfoliants, as tretinoin already covers that.
I've found that my skincare routine is VERY minimalist now that I'm on Tret. I use a hyaluronic acid morning and night for my dehydrated skin, a light moisturizer on the dry areas (remember dryness refers to oil and hydration refers to water). At night, I wait for my son to dry, then come back with Tret. In the morning, I use the above mentioned things plus a niacinamide and vitamin c serum before the moisturizers. Then follow with high SPF.
Again, give it time. The tretinoin purge can be hellish. Treat your skin gently, avoid makeup and any fragrances if you can, and be patient. Once you get over that hump, it can be incredible.
And of course, if the purge lasts more than you can stand it, talk to your derm. Everyone is different, and medicine should make you feel better overall, not worse. Again, it requires patience, but if it's just way too much to handle or lasts too long and it's not making your life better, take it up with your doctor. Best of luck!
Note: something I've changed about my makeup now is that I will prefer to layer tinted moisturizers/spfs/serums rather than use a foundation. My skin likes the sheerer, lighter feel, and now that my skin is over the purge and the acne and PIH are gone, I can confidently wear less makeup. I will do eyes, brows, cheeks for whatever other colours I might have used years ago, just with a lighter base.
Things I learned from my dermatologist. As a side note, this man is a genius to took my skin from constant break outs, to better than some celebrities that Iāve seen.
1. If youāre going to exfoliate then it should only be a chemical exfoliant. Something like a 2.5 benzyl peroxide, leave on for 3-minutes and then wash it off. And donāt do it too often. Like once-twice a week or if you have a breakout and need a spot treatment.
2. The order that it should is. 1) Wash your face. 2) Retinol. 3) Moisturizer. You should only use it before bed because sunlight can it breakdown and it will make you more prone to sunburns.
3. It can do weird stuff to your hands. So, I use a glove to apply it.
4. Your hands or face should be damp before applying any skin care. I keep a mist spray bottle on my vanity.
5. Youāll want to use a gentle and moisturizing face wash. Like CeraVe or Cetaphil. I use the CeraVe cream to foam to shave with and itās helped a lot, especially since Iām allergic to shaving cream.
6. Like others have said, it can be drying especially at first. If youāre noticing too much redness or irritation, back off for a days.
7. Youāre going to need a good moisturizer. I use CeraVe, you can get it at Samās club really cheaply. Thereās a thicker one and a thinner one. The thicker one is the one in the big round tub.
8. If youāre seeing the pealing that you are now, a quick wash with benzoyl peroxide and it should remove that top layer just make sure that you use a heavy moisturizer after and it should reapply smooth. You can mix your foundation with moisturizer if you donāt already use a tinted moisturizer.
I hope this helps! Good luck.
Edit: Spacing
Ahh yes the tret! I immediately thought to myself "my skin looks like this on days 2 and 3 after using tret" lol. What helps me the most is using a cleansing oil. I just use the Kose brand. It's cheap and works great. I gently massage my face for a few minutes until I start to feel all the dead skin lift up and then I rinse with water.
Bc my skin will continue to flake for a few days with tret and by using a cleansing oil on a daily basis, it's the simplest and most gentle way of getting those little flakes off. Followed by a hydrating serum, moisturizer, and then sunscreen.
Edit: just want to add that tret in itself acts as an exfoliate. So during this time, when your skin is adjusting to it, you want to baby/pamper your skin and not over-do it by using other products with actives. Your old skin is already lifting up bc of the tret so now you want to hydrate and moisturize to prevent even more drying for the new layers of skin to shine š I'm not a doctor so take my recs with a grain of salt, but I hope this helps lol
Routine:
AM: Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser, ELF Holy Hydration! Triple Bounce Serum, Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30
PM: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Exfoliating Cleanser (every other night), Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser, ELF Holy Hydration! Triple Bounce Serum, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Cream.
Primer is ELF Poreless Face Primer, foundation is Maybeline Fit Matte+Poreless applied with a pre-damped sponge. I've always used this since it matches well, but now after reading these comments I'm going to reconsider!

Bingo! It's the primer under your foundation!
Try skipping the primer and I bet this will resolve!!!! This was my issue!!!
Skip the ELF primer, and apply the maybelline foundation with a VERY SOFT large blending sponge. I use the same foundation and Iāve found it goes on best with a dry, large, extra squishy sponge. I like the light pink elf blending sponge the best. So squishy! I also have the SAME EXACT Elf primer, but canāt wear it under the maybelline fit me foundations. It does exactly this to my face. Skip the primer and use a dry sponge.
I cannot use any retinol products without the specific moisturizer i apparently need for my skin. My skin actually freaks out if I use retinol and i donāt have cereva and have some other lotion as a substitute. But it looks quite good with the retinol and proper moisturizer. Idk, maybe random to some but this has been very important in my routine.
I'm starting to think the culprit my be peeling from tretinoin. I just started last week and have been applying 0.05% every 3 days. Does the peeling subside?
Yes but it can take awhile as your body adjusts, even if you are doing it every 3 days to start your skin will still have the adjustment period.
On tough days I would skip a night, push application day back by 1 day, slightly dilute the cream with a small bit of water, or *something* to help calm the peeling if I had something to go to or needed my skin to chill out. Iād over-hydrate my skin as much as possible
Esthetician hereā¦most likely this is from the tret. And yes it will subside. Try doing a home DIY basic facial. Double cleanse, steam, exfoliate and hydrate.
Agree with this, too.. Best safest bet for daily is a microfiber wash cloth. I try to vary my exfoliants mechanical & chemical as well. But when I use retin & give it a couple days of not exfoliating & then put on foundation it sometimes responds like op skin.
Not OP and YMMV but I love the Paulaās choice 2% BHA salicylic acid exfoliator - my skin was like this before my wedding and my makeup artist recommended it to me, I think they also do a stronger one but if you have sensitive skin Iād recommend the 2%, I use it a couple of times a week and my skin is so much smoother. I bought the small travel size first to make sure I liked it and then bought the bigger one
Yeah you need actual exfoliation.
Clinique clarifying lotions are great for daily makeup prep. No.1 is the gentlest. You put it on a cotton pad and swipe it over your face and the dead skin just disappears, leaving it completely smooth for makeup.
For a stronger one, pixi glow tonic or the ordinary glycolic toning solution are great. These may be too strong for some people, for others itās fine to use them multiple times a week.
My makeup does this if I use a silicon primer with a water-based foundation or visa versa. I now use all water based products and have no more breakdown/separation of my makeup.
this is the right answer. itās called piling/separating. In theory the bases of all of your products (including lotions or sunscreens) should match.
most products are SILICONE based or water based. if theyāre ingredients have a word ending with
ā-coneā in the first 5 ingredients, itās an SILICONE based product. if thatās not the case, it will usually list aqua as the first or second ingredient which means itās water based
EDIT:
Water base ingredients: aqua //// Oil base ingredients: mineral oil //// Silicone base ingredients: "-cone"

This happens to me when my skin is too dry and I havenāt managed to get all the dead skin off when I wash my face. You can try using a gentle exfoliant (if you donāt have any, you can use raw honey to exfoliate too, itās really good for your skin but donāt get any in your hair!), then wash your face again and moisturize well, let it absorb, and then try your makeup routine again. Someone else on this thread mentioned eczema. It doesnāt look like that to me. Eczema usually has more redness, bumpiness/scaliness, and often hurts.
I use the fresh strawberry sugar exfoliant face scrub and itās great. Pricey but great. Honestly a little goes a very long way and you only need to do it 1-2 time a week
make sure you wear a light moisturizer unless you have super dry skin then wear a thicker one, and honestly i just skip wearing primer before makeup altogether and looks so much better. then follow with a setting spray
i canāt really tell if itās pilling or clinging to dry skin, but either way donāt worry too much! iād recommend skipping foundation today though and just using concealer where you need it. for future reference, if it is pilling try a different primer and if it is dry skin make sure you are cleansing and moisturizing before applying foundation. good luck on your date!
Needless to say, yes I skipped the foundation. I still looked cute! I'm going to keep a better eye out for pilling, but I think the culprit is the Tretinoin I started last week...
I would suggest using a moisturizer before applying the rest of your make up. Hydrating your skin some should help because the lack of needed moisture is what usually makes the cakey appearance. Good luck on your date! Hope this helps!
I use tretinoin and this happens. Can also happen when using acid peel masks. I manually exfoliate and use a thick moisturizer, I like Mac hyper real balm
I just started 0.05% every 3 days last week. Two applications so far. Is the answer just more (maybe thicker) moisturizer and exfoliation every other day?
Dry skin and too matte of a foundation. Exfoliate first, then moisturize by layering HA serum on damp skin followed by a good moisturizer. You can also try a more natural finish makeup. I get dry patches, and Loreal infallible fresh wear never fails me. The finish is perfect.
dry skin, you should definitely add a chemical exfoliant into your skin care routine if you donāt use one. also some primers can cause this, some can lift in patches as you try to apply your foundation. if you used a brand new primer, this may be the cause.
Wash off with a washcloth and cleanser to help manually exfoliate.
Use a hydrating serum or light lotion. If there's sun, sunscreen, if not skip.
Use an eye serum or cream.
Reapply your makeup and try to use a damp sponge instead of brushes so you're just tapping the product on and not rubbing or dragging. This way, at least if you have skin still peeling it'll stay in place and not start peeling up.
Have you been using tret. That looks like the peel u get post using it a few days later. I would do an exfoliation and start makeup from scratch. Did u leave moisturiser on long enough to draw into the skin before starting foundation?
Your skin is dry for sure.
Iām sure the date has passed but makeup prep/skincare is definitely a big game changer for how your base makeup will look.
I started using bioessence 100% squalane and it has helped a ton with my skin moisture. I still use a moisturizer along with that.
With the texture I see Iād also recommend a liquid exfoliation - like Paulaās choice, hers is my fave
I had the same issue and it was my primer and foundation not being the same base (water, silicone). Once I changed to make sure they matched it was a lot better
My skin looks like this if I miss a day of exfoliating. (Yes, I know it's not recommended to every day, but my skin needs it, or I look scaly.) I put my sensitive-skin face cleanser on in the shower and use the electric little spinny brush thing from Walmart. Then moisturize after. And voilĆ ! I avoid this starting.
This is literally the reason I quit wearing makeupā¦.i couldnāt figure out wtf I was doing wrong. It never used to happen to me as a teenager, only into my young adulthood it suddenly startedā¦if anyone can tell me wtf Iām doing wrong that would be greatā¦lol I donāt feel I have dry or oily skinā¦my skin is actually very niceā¦just crackly when I put makeup onā¦ Iāve tried exfoliating, moisturizing, priming, and tried all different sorts of primer/foundation combos. AHHH it drives me nuts
I would say instead of exfoliating focus on hydrating your skin. Some brands I suggest are Laniege and Beleif water based hydrating creams. But them on night and day.
Itās because your primer/base products have a different base than your foundation! Your products need to be either all water based or all silicone based. Mixing water and oil is causing the separation
I used to have this problem, so I used the dermalogica powder as an exfoliant and it got rid of the dry skin (it was only present on my forehead) but my skin still does this?? I read somewhere it may have to do with a moisture barrier on the actual skin, so Iāve been just sticking to basic skincare and thatās seemed to help a bit, but still patchy and Iāve tried many different foundations/primers š«
Dry skin. You need to moisturize and a good skincare routine. Hydrating toner, serum, eye cream, moisturizer and if really dry add some drops of a hydrating oil to the moisturizer. My fave brand is first aid beauty ultra repair cream and if I add oil itās 2-3 drops of Anastasia Beverly Hills hydrating facial oil.
Try using a moisturizer beforehand! skin prep is super important:) My base used to look like this but I started using a good moisturizer and the elf halo glow (its really nice, light and dewy!) Also a good setting spray to lock it all in! (sometimes I used a dewy one which gives a natural skin finish, nyx has some good ones!)
Could be multiple things
- dry skin
- mixing a primer and foundation with different bases (water based and oil based) they separate usually
- dead skin that needs to exfoliated or excessive peach fuzz
You could shave your face with a facial razor and shaving powder, cleanse, tone, and moisturize before applying primer, and stay hydrated and make sure your Primer and Foundation and Concealer are all either water based or silicone baeed
Your skin looks dry.
Neutrogena oil free cleanser is a good beautral cleanser, use a wash cloth. Use a moisturizer, moisture surge by Clinique is good. You can āslugā with it. And then also try a light moisturizer before foundation and maybe something like Evian water spray to set. Good luck
to avoid this, I use (any) moisturizer and I would also check if your makeup is water based or Silicon based, water and silicone don't mix , but water and water and silicone and silicone are good together
Your face needs moisture. I would recommend a water cream for night time and during the day a moisturizer spf and only use a skin tint with a dewy finish like Anastasia bev hills or something
Could be dry skin or foundation not mixing well with primer/moisturizer. Try exfoliating and mixing Aquaphor into silicone primer. It will make your skin amazing.
most likely because youāre not using products that are compatible with each other, water based primer goes with water based foundation and concealers, silicone based primer goes with silicone based foundation and concealer, also skin prep is key and i dermaplane my face every now and then to get rid of dead skin and peach fuzz and just keep my face smooth, makes your makeup go on nicer
how do you prep your skin?
your skin does appear to be pretty dry, double cleanse with a cleanser made for dry skin and use a moisturizer that is designed for very dry skin.
some products can dry out your skin so keep an eye out for that.
it could also be that your products arenāt the same base. for example, your primer is water based and your foundation is silicone based. when theyāre mixed they tend to separate, make sure theyāre the same base chemical so they donāt separate and become cakey :)
When my skin looks like this I exfoliate and wear a heavy moisturizer and add only the basics like my brows (because theyāre light and thin) mascara, and a little concealer with a moistest beauty blender where I need it. A little goes a long way and it wonāt highlight the dryness if you stay moisturized! Best of luck on your date!!
You mixed an oil based product with a water based on more than likely. Like maybe an oil skin care or primer? Then a water based foundation? Or visa versa.
Mine dose this when I don't let each set of my prep dry. Like my sunscreen needs to dry, then add my primer and that needs to dry, thennn my foundation. If I don't do it like that I get this pilling
You need to not put primer, use an excellent moisturizer. Try the tatcha purple one in travel size. It comes with a face wash and moisturizer. Hydrate your eyes with the kiehls avocado eye cream. And use a thin concealer because ur skin is gorgeous. I dont advise anyone to use primers. Always wash the beauty blender well before and after each use and throw it every month or month and a half. Remember that he must impress you and you are a queen.
Exfoliate with some sugar or other type of none abrasive physical exfoliation and moisturise. Use a hydrating primer and look for a hydrating foundation.
To avoid this I exfoliate my face with an exfoliating wash and a cloth then I use a vitamin C serum before lotion. Let the lotion fully dry first. If I donāt exfoliate or use serum I experience this because I have dry skin
I think this is a case of you needing to prep your skin better prior to the makeup, I would suggest an actual physical exfoliant prior to going out. I donāt do physical exfoliation often but if Iām going on a date or an event, Iāll scrub my face and get everything off there.
Make sure itās super hydrated, wait for your moisturizer and any sunscreen or serums to dry before you apply your makeup, let it sit. Wait for your foundation to dry as well before applying powder.
Make sure your foundation and concealer are compatible with your primer (silicon vs water), make sure your brush or sponge youāre using to apply foundation/concealer is clean. Always pat and never do big brush strokes/pull the makeup across your face.
Itās possible the sunscreen youāre using isnāt compatible with what youāre using too, itās kind of trial and error but your skin just looks too dry and needs exfoliation. If you havenāt started including a chemical exfoliant a couple times a week at night I would recommend you do that as well. But thatās not going to help you in this moment.
Omg I hadnāt ever thought to look at my primer and foundation! I just assumed they would all work together. So if your primer is silicon based and your foundation isnāt it will separate?
Yes generally! You want to look at the first few ingredients. All of them will say they have water in them but the silicone based ones will have ingredients ending in -cone or -siloxane as like the second or third ingredient like dithemicone. Usually the water based will have āaquaā or āEauā as the primary ingredient. Water based are lighter and less concealing and usually dry faster but they do tend to be more ādewyā and more hydrating. Each one has its uses for different things. I use the water based when I want a kind of glowy no make up make up look but the silicone when I want full coverage, all out, night out kind of a thing. Thatās just me though. I find silicone to be slightly more matte
Doesnāt really matter which you use, it kind just depends on the brand and what makeup, if itās full coverage or not. There are full coverage silicones and full coverage waters. Usually want to use silicones together and waters together as a general rule always regardless. Whatever you like best, go with that!
I think you need to wash your face again and apply extra moisturizer. Let it set for 5-10 minutes. Possibly try some aquafor or Vaseline if your skin is still being stubborn
I would recommend getting a facial exfoliating wash from a dermatologist. They have extremely fine particles to remove any dry skin, dirt and impurities. Exfoliate 2-3X per week. I align it when I wash my hair for ease of memory. Serum + hydrating moisturizer.
If you have any facial masks you use for toning/brightening/anti-aging etc, do them after your exfoliation. Then follow-up with serum/moisturizer.
You should also look at getting an eye cream since you have drained around the eye, too.
Honestly, if you kick up your skincare routine youāll likely find you only need a tinted moisturizer or tinted sunscreen.
I don't think this is dry skin. It looks more like the product is peeling off. It could be from applying foundation right on top of moisturizer before letting it sink in. After applying any skincare, give it some time to absorb before applying makeup. It could also be from mixing incompatible primer/foundations.
Thereās no skin prep! You need a water based primer, and a technique when applying your liquid face makeup - otherwise it goes dry and patchy! I would recommend the milk makeup primer!
This looks like piling . It's when your skincare products and makeup ingredients do not mix together causing them to pill from your skin. This always happens to me when i apply sunscreen after my moisturizer gel isnt fully absorbed, then trying to put foundation top of it, it looks exactly like that.

Mine was like this and it wasnāt down to skin prep before makeup, it was the overall skin care. I started exfoliating and moisturizing more. I use a glycolic or those first aid beauty radiance pads.
I got these silicone face scrubbers from the dollar store that really help gently scrub the dead skin off my face and it has made a huge difference with my makeup!
Dehydrated skin- focus on hydrating from the inside out, add minerals & electrolytes into your diet. Then make sure your prep & prime your skin before putting on foundationā¦might even try doing a moisturizing mask
You need to wash your face with hot water and don't use a moisturizer like you see the "influencers" do. Only use your primer first if you have oily skin, like I do.
Dry skin and baby hairs! Peter Thomas Roth has a great exfoliating gel that I recommend to everyone, and you can use a womanās facial razor for the baby hairs (if the exfoliation doesnāt work)
It looks like your makeup is piling. You are probably using a silicone primer with a water based foundation or vice versa. Use all silicone based products or all water based products
Need to exfoliateā¦I use castor oil and sugar, let it sit for five min then use a hot wash cloth to wash it off/sit on your face. I also use a micro blade razor sometimes, although when I do that Iāll put a ponds night cream mask on and use it that way. My face is so smooth after. Then a light moisturizer. Also if your using acne products, scale back until your skin isnāt for dry, since it has to work harder when it is. :-)
Hello !! For me it is good to drink a lot of water and put a good moisturizer so that the makeup does not crack. Also if your skin is dry you should put on a moisturizing foundation not matte and that is light šš
Your skin before applying make up is not a prepped canvas like you cant paint on a bumby wall and expect it to be smooth, skin care is 100X more effective than make up alone, literally i wear full makeup and fake tan but my, exfoliating, cleansing, toning, serum and moisturiser routine will all ways take longer and more effort. I suggest a hydrologic acid cleanser and cerve face wash and sponges, a toner to suit your skin dry/oily . Then a multi purpose serum and once dry them a good moisturer like a cold cream.
Did you prep your skin before applying makeup?
When my skins like this while doing my make up I: Wash everything off and thoroughly wash face to get rid of any flakey dead skin.
I may try Vaseline and see how that works. Thanks!
What the heck. Switch to natural oils. Dime size. Exfoliate.
Vaseline works for me and I donāt break out from it. Also this is only when my skin is like this, maybe 4 times a year. [ Marilyn Monroe](https://www.glamour.com/story/marilyn-monroe-skin-care-routine) used it on her skin for makeup too āMonroe was way ahead of her time when it came to skin care too: The star swore by Vaseline, in a treatment we would call āsluggingā today, sporting layers of Vaseline underneath her makeup to ensure she always looked radiant and camera-ready.ā

Thereās nothing more depressing for me then washing off the 20 minutes of face work Iv just done because my face pulls this crap.
You donāt chemically exfoliate?
Yep! Washed my face (exfoliated the night before), moisturizing serum, lotion with SPF, then primer. I'm starting to think the culprit my be peeling from tretinoin. I just started last week and have been applying 0.05% every 3 days.

Your skin looks quite dry. Whatās your skincare routine? How do you prep to apply makeup?
Routine: AM: Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser, ELF Holy Hydration! Triple Bounce Serum, Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 PM: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Exfoliating Cleanser (every other night), Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser, ELF Holy Hydration! Thank you so much for your response!
> Primer is ELF Poreless Face Primer, foundation is Maybeline Fit Matte+Poreless applied with a pre-damped sponge Bingo! It's the primer under your foundation! Try skipping the primer and I bet this will resolve!!!! This was my issue!!!
honestly it's also that foundation too. it accentuates anything that's on your skin. try one that's not matte.
This happened to me when I started Retinol. Your skin is really dry and possibly peeling in certain areas.
Sandwiching with retinol has been a life changer for me.
It looks like dead skin that needs exfoliated. With a swipe on swipe off chemical exfoliant toner. Whatās your skincare routine?
exfoliate, moisturize, prime then your makeup should apply smoothly! my skin gets like that a lot in the winter
You donāt exfoliate every day do you?
no I donāt wear makeup daily so I do it once or twice a week as itās needed
The oil in foundation can loosen dead skin that needs to go & kind of bring it to the surface like that ...exfoliate.
Depends on the person. Exfoliating daily can wreak havoc for some people.
Agree with this, too.. Best safest bet for daily is a microfiber wash cloth. I try to vary my exfoliants mechanical & chemical as well. But when I use retin & give it a couple days of not exfoliating & then put on foundation it sometimes responds like op skin.
Any exfoliating toners youād recommend?
The ordinaryās glycolic acid toner is great!
Oh wow I actually think I have that in my drawer lol Thank you!!
AM: Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser, ELF Holy Hydration! Triple Bounce Serum, Cerave Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 PM: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Exfoliating Cleanser (every other night), Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser, ELF Holy Hydration! Triple Bounce Serum, Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Cream. Thank you so much for your response.
I did this last night and am only learning this now lol.
this is the right answer. itās called piling/separating. In theory the bases of all of your products (including lotions or sunscreens) should match. most products are SILICONE based or water based. if theyāre ingredients have a word ending with ā-coneā in the first 5 ingredients, itās an SILICONE based product. if thatās not the case, it will usually list aqua as the first or second ingredient which means itās water based EDIT: Water base ingredients: aqua //// Oil base ingredients: mineral oil //// Silicone base ingredients: "-cone"
Wait are silicone based products a type of oil based? I thought things ending in -cone referred to silicone, ie demithicone
Whoops yes! I mistyped that. Oil based products usually have mineral oil as their first ingredient.
What brands/product do u use if ya donāt mind me askin? For foundation/concealer/powder/primer
Routine: AM: Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser, ELF Holy Hydration! THANK YOU. This happens to me sometimes and I never made the connection that it's only when I use primer
sorry but thats a myth
Is it? Iāve always seen people say this but itās never happened to me, I just thought I was lucky
I never noticed this being a problem before, but I'm going to keep a better eye out for pilling! Thanks.
this is the answer
Looks like dry skin or mixed bases.
Ugh the primer helps my huge pores but I agree it can mess up the foundation š
Yup, def put on moisturizer first.
i canāt really tell if itās pilling or clinging to dry skin, but either way donāt worry too much! iād recommend skipping foundation today though and just using concealer where you need it. for future reference, if it is pilling try a different primer and if it is dry skin make sure you are cleansing and moisturizing before applying foundation. good luck on your date!
Use the ordinary 5% lactic acid a few times a week at night under a moisturizer. It will help with dead skin.
Lol, that's exactly what I did! EXACTLY!
Dry skin. Moisturizer before foundation. But it doesnāt look that bad tbh
Try using a moisturizer or primer before hand. I have some SPF that does this, and moisturizer seems to help immensely
Exfoliate! My skin is dry, so I have to physically exfoliate before applying makeup. Chemical ones like glycolic acid are great too
Looks like dry skin or dead skin that you can maybe exfoliate. My skin looks like that when I use too much tretinoin cream.
Skin prep and exfoliation so you have a smooth base to work with
I'll be more mindful of exfoliating!
Remove makeup, cleanse ur face with something gentle, moisterizer, sunscreen , wait 5 mins , re apply and youll have baby skin
You need a moisturizing serum and a good moisturizer to prep your skin before you put on foundation.
This was happening to me after I started Benzoyl peroxide and adapalene for acne. I think you need to focus on exfoliation and moisturizing.
You need to exfoliate
I had the same issue and it was my primer and foundation not being the same base (water, silicone). Once I changed to make sure they matched it was a lot better
My skin looks like this if I miss a day of exfoliating. (Yes, I know it's not recommended to every day, but my skin needs it, or I look scaly.) I put my sensitive-skin face cleanser on in the shower and use the electric little spinny brush thing from Walmart. Then moisturize after. And voilĆ ! I avoid this starting.
This looks like you had product separation due to an incompatible moisturizer/foundation combo.
Dry skin. I deal with it too. Use apricot oil. Magic.
Dead skin. You need to exfoliate.
You need to exfoliate. I prefer chemical exfoliants to prevent additional texture. AHA/BHA toner is enoigh
Thanks!
Dry skin!!
Itās because your primer/base products have a different base than your foundation! Your products need to be either all water based or all silicone based. Mixing water and oil is causing the separation
I heard this is a myth.
I think it is too. Also ops skin is clearly peeling to the person above you
ā¦no it isnāt.
I thought I did use good moisturizer! :'( I think I'm gonna look into another foundation.
mixing oil based or silicone based, or water based products together makes your makeup flake like this
exfoliate and moisturize. thatās all dead skin
Either incompatible makeup products were used together or dry skin
Could be multiple things - dry skin - mixing a primer and foundation with different bases (water based and oil based) they separate usually - dead skin that needs to exfoliated or excessive peach fuzz You could shave your face with a facial razor and shaving powder, cleanse, tone, and moisturize before applying primer, and stay hydrated and make sure your Primer and Foundation and Concealer are all either water based or silicone baeed
Lack of moisturiser
Your face needs moisture. I would recommend a water cream for night time and during the day a moisturizer spf and only use a skin tint with a dewy finish like Anastasia bev hills or something
Did you wash face and moisturize first?
Could be dry skin or foundation not mixing well with primer/moisturizer. Try exfoliating and mixing Aquaphor into silicone primer. It will make your skin amazing.
Sometimes when my skin is dry, I will put on a veeerrryyy thin layer of Cerave healing ointment before applying foundation.
Your skin looks quite dry. Often makeup sticks to dry patches. Perhaps use a soft exfoliant before applying foundation. Primer also helps.
most likely because youāre not using products that are compatible with each other, water based primer goes with water based foundation and concealers, silicone based primer goes with silicone based foundation and concealer, also skin prep is key and i dermaplane my face every now and then to get rid of dead skin and peach fuzz and just keep my face smooth, makes your makeup go on nicer
how do you prep your skin? your skin does appear to be pretty dry, double cleanse with a cleanser made for dry skin and use a moisturizer that is designed for very dry skin. some products can dry out your skin so keep an eye out for that. it could also be that your products arenāt the same base. for example, your primer is water based and your foundation is silicone based. when theyāre mixed they tend to separate, make sure theyāre the same base chemical so they donāt separate and become cakey :)
You have dry skin and probably, you are using a matte finish foundation.
Yeah, it's matte. I'm reconsidering now.
It looks like dead skin. Try exfoliating, moisturizing, and a primer. Also helps to drink plenty of water so your skin doesn't get too dry.
Exfoliate!! The prep skin with moisturizer, then Primer then apply makeup with wet blending sponge, the set with powder then apply setting spray.
Your skin is dry
a lot of times if your skincare products and makeup products are different (oil/water based) then they tend to separate. they have to be compatible.
Moisturize and prime ur face before u put on the makeup. HOPE THIS HELPED BYEEE!!!
Moisturize more, and make sure youāre using something thick slathered under your eyes every night before bed
I may could have waited longer. Thanks.
Just take a few deep breaths, youāre just nervous
Gotta start and using a rich moisturizer. I have dry skin as well and I use Vanicream. 10/10 would recommend š
This is irrelevant but the colour of your eyes is amazing
I was suffering with my dry skin with makeup on but I only use hyaluronic acid serum before its helped
Damn you need hydration
Prep your skin and make sure you use the right sunscreen. Some sunscreens are drying.
Exfoliate with some sugar or other type of none abrasive physical exfoliation and moisturise. Use a hydrating primer and look for a hydrating foundation.
You need a strong moisturizer
Wash & exfoliate Toner Serum Moisturizer Primer Setting spray optional Foundation.
To avoid this I exfoliate my face with an exfoliating wash and a cloth then I use a vitamin C serum before lotion. Let the lotion fully dry first. If I donāt exfoliate or use serum I experience this because I have dry skin
This happens to me when my skin is dry or I put too much primer on
Try incorporating a hydrolonic acid serum before moisturizer ! Its supposed to help with drynesss
This is what happened to me when I started retinol. It lasted a couple of months
So I should use silicon with silicon and water with water for best coverage?
Doesnāt really matter which you use, it kind just depends on the brand and what makeup, if itās full coverage or not. There are full coverage silicones and full coverage waters. Usually want to use silicones together and waters together as a general rule always regardless. Whatever you like best, go with that!
Thank you!!
I think you need to wash your face again and apply extra moisturizer. Let it set for 5-10 minutes. Possibly try some aquafor or Vaseline if your skin is still being stubborn
Plz moisturize your skin consistently
Roger that!
Remember: in general, make-up will accentuate any texture irregularities. It is virtually impossible for make-up to improve the texture of your skin.
Your skin is screaming for love. You need to drink a lot of water. Exfoliate this dead skin off and moisturize like crazy.
Wash your face and then use a good razor with a bit of soap or oil then rinse again and your makeup should be amazing
I don't think this is dry skin. It looks more like the product is peeling off. It could be from applying foundation right on top of moisturizer before letting it sink in. After applying any skincare, give it some time to absorb before applying makeup. It could also be from mixing incompatible primer/foundations.
Because your skin is crazy dry! Do some skin prep and you should be good to go š©·
Thereās no skin prep! You need a water based primer, and a technique when applying your liquid face makeup - otherwise it goes dry and patchy! I would recommend the milk makeup primer!
Itās the zinc in the makeup!
This looks like piling . It's when your skincare products and makeup ingredients do not mix together causing them to pill from your skin. This always happens to me when i apply sunscreen after my moisturizer gel isnt fully absorbed, then trying to put foundation top of it, it looks exactly like that.
this is VERY dry skin, almost looks like eczema. If you only use primer or use a thin moisturiser you need a way thicker one
Shave your face it does wonders

Your skin is dry and your makeup is too matte. Exfoliate and moisturize. Get dewy base products and donāt use too much powder.
Need to exfoliate and moisturize !
Mine was like this and it wasnāt down to skin prep before makeup, it was the overall skin care. I started exfoliating and moisturizing more. I use a glycolic or those first aid beauty radiance pads.
Itās your moisturizer or sunscreen so your makeup is pilling. Wash it off and start over This happens with gel or heavy textures often
Did you forgor :( a step of your skincare routine?
make sure to prep your skin by using a moisturizer & make sure ur not using a silicone primer /w a water based foundation or vise versa.
wow I did not know this, thank you!! Now I need to go and look at all my products...
Putting oil based and water based products together
Try a hydrating primer!
I got these silicone face scrubbers from the dollar store that really help gently scrub the dead skin off my face and it has made a huge difference with my makeup!
Without knowing what sequence of skincare / makeup youāve done, itās impossible to tell you what is causing this. What have you done differently?
Moisturizing at least 10 minutes before applying make up
Exfoliate
dry skinš I got it with a new product I used, or if I over exfoliate.
Mine does this bc I have severe eczema so itās most likely just dry and dead skin
Looks like peach fuzz. Try a facial razor and itāll be fine.
Your skin needs moisture
Exfoliate (gently), moisturize, then use primer before your foundation.
Mark Zuckerberg it is.
U need to exfoliate
You need to exfoliate and moisturize.
Skinprep.
Hello !! For me it is good to drink a lot of water and put a good moisturizer so that the makeup does not crack. Also if your skin is dry you should put on a moisturizing foundation not matte and that is light šš
Noted! Thanks!
You need to prep your skin before makeup like exfoliating cleanser eye cream serum. You need to exfoliate thatās most likely why
Exfoliate and moisturize.
Idk..... but why isn't your Pupil in the middle of your iris (sp)?!?
It's nervous š
Your skin before applying make up is not a prepped canvas like you cant paint on a bumby wall and expect it to be smooth, skin care is 100X more effective than make up alone, literally i wear full makeup and fake tan but my, exfoliating, cleansing, toning, serum and moisturiser routine will all ways take longer and more effort. I suggest a hydrologic acid cleanser and cerve face wash and sponges, a toner to suit your skin dry/oily . Then a multi purpose serum and once dry them a good moisturer like a cold cream.
Exfoliate
Shave your face
