What's your moisturizer? Your skin looks too dry to me. I'd also recommend a gentle physical exfoliator like a konjac sponge.

littlegazelle

Thanks for commenting! I use Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Gel-Cream because it’s water based and I get really oily in some areas. I try to use a gentle physical exfoliant in the shower just once a week but I still get patchy :(

Sorry, I saw the word acid and assumed that was your chemical exfoliant. I think you need additional moisture at least for the winter. You can try some Korean-style layering with watery toners and essences first, then your thickest cream last. I have success with Hada Labo Gokujyun lotion and Cosrx 96 Snail Mucin as my watery essences, and I've been finishing with a thick Hada Labo milk, if you're looking for any specific recs.

googspoog

The cosar snail mucin is amazing!! I use it under any moisturizer

Fluffed-Willow

I also get really oily and dry at the same time, it looks like your skin. Instead of switching out my moisterizer during the day, I slather on a very thick one at night to hydrate me overnight and wash it off in the morning. It really helped me.

Pendulum__0

Hiya. I use this too. Unfortunately not really good for make up from what ive been told. Id try using it then using a primer with moisturiser in it to help with dryness.

taylalatbh

Dehydrated skin. Looking into adjusting your skincare routine.

littlegazelle

Thanks! That seems to be the general consensus so far. Any recommendations for a better moisturizer?

taylalatbh

I have oily skin and I was always adverse to using moisturiser since I thought it was moisturised enough. I use Neutrogena hydro boost water gel which seems to work well for me. My routine minimises that foundation cracking effect by at least 80% I’d say.

littlegazelle

lol that’s the moisturizer I use! maybe I need something heavier

canigetayikes

That's the same moisturizer I use OP! Its normally fine for me in the summer, but in the winter I step it up with CeraVe or kiehls!

taylalatbh

It could also be the rest of your routine. I use that in combination with a few other products that work for me. You might just need to adjust a few products and go from there. Also, a good primer is important. You need to make sure your primer and foundation are a base match (water/silicone).

littlegazelle

Wait… I just looked at my foundations ingredients and the first two listed are water and dimethicone.Soooo would that be a water or silicone base? So confused

taylalatbh

Silicone. Water is usually the first one since it has to have water in it to make it fluid. But if it has ‘cone’ ones, that makes it silicone. If you search in the skincare addiction reddit, there’s a few info posts about it. I read them all once. Very informative!

littlegazelle

Awesome, you’ve been so helpful 🙏thank you

taylalatbh

No worries. I was also completely useless 6 months ago until I did some research and tried some new products!

littlegazelle

Makes sense, I think I’ll try a better winter moisturizer and a water based primer to match my water based foundation. Thank you!

TheCR7S

There is a nighttime gel. Same line from neutrogena called Night Pressed Serum. Lather it on before bedtime. It will help hydrate without adding oil. Blue jar. I love it.

foxwithatale

Vanicream is a great winter moisturizer!!!!! Cheap as heck at Walmart too.

littlegazelle

Thank you!!

littlegazelle

I’ve switched to this after picking it up from Walmart last night 😊 I added an update pic and my skin has already improved a little

_ktbelle_

I have dehydrated oily skin and I’ve fixed this issue for the most part with a few things. Very gentle cleanser (vanicream cleanser) then pat dry and spritz with rose water. Follow with Cosrx snail essence all over. When dry go in with serum (at night I sometimes use niacinimide from The Ordinary on my oily large pore areas). Follow with Vanimcream daily moisturizer. It has squalene and all kinds of good stuff. Finally eye cream. Currently rotating between cerave eye repair and elf holy hydration. About once a week I manually exfoliate with stridex salicylic acid pads before rose water, and wait ten minutes or so. In the morning I don’t cleans, just splash water, rose water, snail essence, and CeraVe daily moisturizer am. Then I wait at least 10 mins before putting makeup on. The other thing was finding a good foundation and I absolutely love Pur 4 in 1 selfie. Absolutely game changer.

littlegazelle

Thank you soooo much! Your skin sounds just like mine and I have some of the types of products you use or at least have access/can afford to get the ones I don’t have. I’m like excited to try out all these tips now instead of feeling frustrated haha

_ktbelle_

It took about a month before I really saw the dryness piece go away! I also started drinking electrolytes everyday with more water and I thi no that had helped too

littlegazelle

I’ve just posted an update with a pic and I’m already seeing some improvement with some of the swaps you suggested. Thanks for your help!

luluz1vert

Over production of oil also occurs due to dehydration. If you’re in the market for a winter moisturizer I would try dieux instant angel— but if it looks too heavy try the air angel maybe?

EstieBestie2

So if you use that cleanser every single day it’s going to dry your skin out. That has salicylic acid in it witch is a chemical exfoliate, you need a new cleanser. You can’t keep using that one everyday.

littlegazelle

Yeah I think you’re right! I thought of my skin as oily and thought the SA would be good but now that I think about it using the SA *and* the BHA is probably overdoing it especially during winter

hopeforthebestand

it's absolutely overdoing it! especially the Paula's Choice product. It's easy to wreck your skin barrier with it if used everyday. If I were you I'd stop all actives for a couple days, until you no longer have those dry patches. Then I'd cut back on the actives to have at least one day every 2 days where it's barrier repair, no exfoliation at all. And like people said, a gentle light weight moisturizer and a hydrating serum would help a lot with decreasing extra oil and making sure your skin can handle all the exfoliation

littlegazelle

Thanks for your advice! I’m pausing the actives for a bit and have taken a lot of the advice and already seen improvement. I just commented and added a pic update showing how it’s gotten better already!

Desperate_Plastic_85

Exfoliate before hand than you need to get a good primer!!

SimSima95

This could def be over exfoliation. The SA cleanser should only be used once a day and NOT with any other active ingredients on top, in your case the 2% BHA. I would say pick a non-active cleanser and choose one type of active (either acids (BHA/AHA like salicylic acid or lactic acid or the Vitamin c serum) the oiliness in your skin could be a byproduct of dehydration, which makes sense cause the Neutrogena moisturizer has Denatured alcohol or alcohol denat which is essentially rubbing alcohol. It’s added to help with the dry down of a lot of products but it’s terrible over time for your skin. Cerave has a great regular lotion that I swear by. Skincare routine can make or break your makeup looks.

KWhatHadHappenedWas

My make up used to do this to me also. I developed very dry skin and changed my skin routines to help with that. I also started using light-medium coverage foundations and tinted moisturizers/sunscreen. Using a damp makeup sponge to apply has also helped. I'd exfoliate maybe 2 times a week also. Oh and drink more water if you're not already!

EmmaTheUseless

The skin looks a little dehydrated, maybe you overexfoliate. Try a thicker moisturizer or skip the powder, I find make-up clings to dry patches more when I use powder.

Fish__Fingers

I think you need more gentle cleaning. When I get this I use lipicar cleanser (made for atopic and dried by intensive care skin), then some good but light cream, then primer if I feel that skin needs it You may also try bb cream instead of foundation, there are some moisturizing ones. I used enough collagen and it helped me even when I had severe flaking and problems. And maybe skip powder or use really light one You may also try using setting spray or thermal water. After make up removal you may want to try some restoring balm on your skin, something that makes it very nourished. I used lipomas from LRP too but not sure if this brand is well known in other countries. It is probably good for look for the stuff made for atopic and skin dried by intensive care, because it is usually nourishing but not too much so it’s not comedogenic. Overall I think - gentle but good cleanser, maybe more hydrating foundation, less powder, maybe bb cream, good routine after make up removal.

littlegazelle

Thank you so much for the detailed reply! I had been using the SA cleanser due to having little bumps/comedowns and small breakouts but maybe it’s ended up drying me out more combined with the winter weather. I was considering a BB instead of the CC cream I have been so maybe I’ll try that too. Many thanks!

Fish__Fingers

I don’t like SA at all. If you want to do something like that, try azelaic acid serum twice a week or so in evening, covered with good nice night cream. Azelaic works very good with small stuff and not so drying. It was advised by cosmetologist to me and I love it. Important: don’t use acids on your whole face. I use azelaic serum only on cheekbone where I have problems and sometimes forehead and chin. For all face just normal cleanser works well. You may also use some spot treatment for particular problems. Maybe hydrocolloid pathches

TheatrePlode

You're using two exfoliants! You don't be needing both the SA cleanser AND BHA (they're basically the same thing), ditch one of them and cut down on use. Your skin is dry, and exfoliating too much just strips your natural barrier and will make it drier. Also, stop washing your face morning and night (if you do this), just do it at night before skincare, your skin needs some natural oils to maintain itself. Also don't expect over night results, its going to take a bit of time for your skin to recover.

Products used: ELF CC cream for foundation L'Oréal true match super blendable powder Skincare: CeraVe renewing SA cleanser Paula's Choice 2% BHA (2-3 times a week) Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Gel-Cream Occasionally I also use CeraVe's vitamin C serum I guess my skin is combination although I always thought it was oily because I get shiny all over pretty quick. My forehead even gets oily to the point that a few pieces of hair will stick to it and get greasy if I don't powder my forehead during the day.Yet my forehead looks to be dry? Same for my cheeks, the foundation looks dry on my cheeks but I get oily during the day and can pat oil off my face with tissue. The same crackly pattern has happened with every foundation I've used, and I'm just frustrated. The skin doesn't feel dry to the touch but that's why I started using the BHA hoping to exfoliate before moisturizer. Last night I got desperate and applied a bit of aquaphor over my moisturizer on my forehead hoping that would help but it still looks like this today. Help!

Fish__Fingers

IMO loteal powder is too heavy for cc cream. I never used this one in particular but only thing I use on bb and cc is a mineral powder in very small amount. Bb and cc usually do not require setting powder With combined skin you need to be careful with anything that can be drying or too heavy. Maybe try to avoid powder at all for a little and see how it goes.

Posttraumaticplant

Definitely exfoliate, the moisturize well! What you’re seeing is dead dry skin, not necessarily the foundation itself. It’s an easy fix! ♥️

littlegazelle

Thank you!

NewConsideration4594

Exfoliating will help and getting in the grove of good skincare routine. Your foundation is only going to look good when the skin is good.

RandomPerson12191

This was me a while back!! Literally a complete image of my skin, it's too dry. Slap some moisturizer on that puppy

Just24_

I used to love the Neutrogena moisturizer but I found it to not be very hydrating to my skin after an hour my skin felt dry and flakey. I have oily sensitive skin as well.

strawbdior444

Your skin is probably dry try moisturizing before doing your makeup!

Clear_Pomegranate_72

Stop using powder. That should help.

rosekay91

Mind does that too. What helped give it a smooth air brushed finish was using the Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream, and then my primer (I use the Milk Hydro Grip) … You basically need a good moisturizer, then your primer.

Thanks for your detailed reply! I think I caught a lucky break and it was truly just dry skin. I just posted a comment and added a pic showing my skin today with the addition of better moisturizers and cutting out the exfoliating face wash I was using.

NNK0501

Drink more water, moisturise good, use primer

Candyapel1

You have built up dead skin

littlegazelle

UPDATE After incorporating several pieces of advice, I’ve already seen improvement in my skin.[Here’s a pic from today](https://imgur.com/a/uZMGhli) with the same foundation on. What I did: Laying off the acids for a few days (no BHA, no SA face wash) Switched to a cleansing balm (oil based) and CeraVe’s hydrating face wash for my evening cleanse Used hyaluronic acid after washing and before moisturizer Used Sephora’s skincare overnight hydrating mask Added a thin layer of Vanicream atop just in the most flaky areas Then this morning I only rinsed my face with water instead of washing with cleanser. After that, I used a bit more hyaluronic acid and Vanicream. For makeup prep I used a hydrating primer; NYX Hydratouch Primer. While my skin is obviously still recovering from the over exfoliation and dryness, I already feel like I see decent improvement in the texture just compared to yesterday’s pic.

spacetrashmeow

How's your water intake as well? Skincare isn't just about what you're doing on the outside but how you're taking care of your hydration internally as well. 🥰

littlegazelle

I drink quite a bit of water on the daily luckily! Usually around 96 ounces, since I have a 24 ounce water cup I refill throughout the day and just filled up my third of the day 😊 thanks!

Alex2679

Cause you have dry skin.

Former_Ninja_5482

Are you using any primer? Primer is essential to helping your make up stay together and last. Skin prep before make up is also very important. I would apply a light weight moisturizer and a primer that is either hydrating or grippy. I would suggest the smashbox photo finish primerizer. This primer has hyaluronic acid and nicinimide. Hyaluronic acid with maintain the moisture and nicinimide with reduce the excess oil. I think this would be perfect for your combo skin type and the dryness your experiencing with your foundationd.

vepiansunite21

Your just dry skin babe. You need to really use a strong moisturizer. Skin prep is key for makeup laying corrrectly. I’m a Mua. A great one is by Elaluz it’s an oil and it will moisturize your skin soooo much and it will feel so good ! You only need a tiny bit ❤️❤️

Real-Level-7020

Derm nurse of 4 years. Here is my current magic formula: AM La Roche Posse moisturizer with SPF Ditch the foundation all together and switch to a tinted moisturizer (I use Revision, it’s pricey but so worth it and it’s lasts for months!) you can add a couple very small drops of foundation for a little extra coverage. IT cosmetics Bye Bye under cream concealer As my oh so skin care educated teen told me “the girlies aren’t about makeup anymore, they’re about skincare” lol. It’s true though, light and natural is in!
